Stayed up all night with all of astolat's Witcher fics last weekend. And I don't play Witcher, nor have I read the books, so I had absolutely no idea who was who doing what. But it was pretty easy to get the hang of it.

What this fantasy world is about or at least what stole my attention completely, is a schemer king Emperor who conquers all the land and plays chess, sorry, shah, with people instead with figures. Combined with the straightforward Witcher who is mage-slash-hunter who reluctantly follows the Emperor's orders and sees through his machinations and has a head for strategy and gives rational advice and . You see where I'm going with this. :D One of my favourite tropes ever in new shining form.

Add in a biological daughter of one of them who is an adoptive daughter and student of the other and has both the nature and nurture to be a force to be reckoned with and I'm utterly, utterly smitten.

Actually, Misethere was the third story (of four!!! of this OTP in existence. on ao3. all of them by astolat. go read them.) I read. I started with Cursed and its tongue in cheek hilarity as well as the trope allowed me a great introduction into this fabulous world. Then I read Incomplete for the Outsider POV and met Dandelion first in his own head because of the first person POV. Also fabulous. Then Misethere which left me with too many feelings which Blooded Crown somehow didn't soothe. And then all that was left was to reread and watch youtube videos of the game. And stalk astolat's lj for news, haha.

It's not easy to write in this fandom at all and especially in a language that is not a Slavic one and keep the atmosphere - realistic, gritty, magical, and surreal at the same time, the tone - ironic, cynical, idealistic, the characters voices, wordsmithing... Astolat manages all of that (but for the joyous linguistic experiments Sapkowski delighted in, but it really is impossible in non Slavic languages) and develops her own vision of characters' choices and motivation. Magical.
I will add here some quotes that stood with me (maybe I'll explain why in the future? Maybe.)
1. “Uh huh, now I’m getting the picture,” Geralt said. “It’s a complete deck, isn’t it? You’ve got every rare card—”
2.
[Emhyr:] "It took a thousand whispers to torture my father to death, though there were only five men in the room when he breathed his last.”
“And you think someone’s going to assassinate Ciri because she helped me kill a wyvern?”
“Do not be absurd. They will assassinate Cirilla for selfishness, to gain more power or because she threatens what they already have. But they require excuses to act. The more of them she provides, the more people whisper, the more emboldened her enemies will grow. And this is not merely a matter of assassination. The best men will not serve an unpopular empress, one whose rule they do not expect to succeed. Those who serve her will do so for their own enrichment alone, and corruption will spread like ink in water. She will find herself unable to accomplish anything."

Brilliant writing. Astolat is the queen of hilarious subtext.

I never had the time to play the game as much as I would have liked to, but read the books and have been hooked on the world and love the witcher lore. There is beautiful, complex worldbuilding in the witcher. Classic fantasy with elves, vampires, wizards, though most of the known tropes (aka Lord of the Rings) are creatively subverted, which gives the world a wondrous modern feel. And the East-European melancholy is soul food.

This is high stakes regency power play, with a biased narrator and a wonderful example of the basic human decency vs. manipulator story, one of my favorite tropes if done well.
And this lady can write powerful endings, so, so satisfying but with exactly the right amount of narrative tension unresolved - so that I’m forced to spend joyful days with filling in the gaps.

If you do not know anything about the Witcher universe and want to give it a go, it is actually quite easy to get the hang of it. If you want to enhance the experience a little bit, do the following: Watch this and this trailer of the videogame on youtube, it will give you a feel for the world (careful, it's quite medieval dark, intense violence, blood and gore a la Games of Thrones). Read the text of the beautiful "Lullaby of woe", you'll find it in many languages, my favorite is the Polish version. Listen to it a few times, it'll put you right in the mood.
Also, here are some useful videos to meet the characters, this is Geralt's audience with His Imperial Majesty (the link will jump ahead to the audience, but if you want to see Geralt naked you can start at the beginning :-)
Here Geralt takes Ciri to meet Emhyr and this is the (best) ending Astolat is writing from. All spoilery, obviously. Oh, oh, and if you're one of the obsessive types (like me), watch this truly awesome scene of the game. Can I say again how much I love the world?

All of Astolat's witcher work is highly recommended!

Enjoy.

It didn't leave an impression on me other than that it was very nice to read about two somewhat older and jaded men. Also, it meandered and dragged. However, I get that there's something to get about this fic that I simply didn't quite get. Therefore, no rating.

I don't know this fandom, this game or if these characters are even human, but this was a compelling story, that I really enjoyed reading. I've heard so much about astolat, and I can see why. I definitely want to read more.
