From the aftermath of a brutal massacre at a rural police station two survivors leave behind a swathe of bodies and a cryptic sigil painted on the wall in blood. A disgraced Detective Inspector begrudgingly starts to investigate the crime scene but as the facts begin to emerge the trail appears to lead into the highest echelons of power making the policeman himself the next target.
As the conspiracy spirals ever deeper and with no-one to trust, both prime suspect and policeman are forced into an unlikely alliance to prove, not only their innocence but the existence of a force so ingrained into our society it could rewrite the very fabric of human nature.
If you like your action to be the type that smacks you bang in the face from early pages then Jackals is a book for you. From the graphic, violent, shocking and bloodthirsty opening pages there is no holding back on this book making a impact on the reader. This is is not for the squeamish. With plenty of blood, gore, body parts, brain matter and other bodily fluids and organs being flung around. But not without a reason.
Imagine this in society? I group of believers think that we need to go back to the basics of hunting and eradicating what they see as threats. A cleansing of the planet. Orders given from powerful, dangerous, sadistic, evil and hidden men to hunt and kill. To kill in packs like wild animals and use the most violent methodology to achieve their means. This is what the plot of Jackals gives us but then more.
A young, happy married couple get innocently caught up and become part of the sadistic games of cat and mouse, helped by a determined British Detective that wants to bring these animalistic monsters to justice. It's not going to to be an easy time of it. There is no mercy, there is no remorse, there are no second chances. If they get hold of you it's going to be time to meet your maker and it's not going to be pleasant. The hunt is on from remote parts of England to the highlands of Scotland and you had better be a step ahead of the game.
Straddling the genres of horror and thriller, Jackals has a fast paced plot that kicks off from page one. The plot concept about the hierarchy of "The Order" - the head honchos behind The Jackals that do the hunting and the killing is disturbing, scary and you may not want to be eating too much whilst reading the book. It's graphic, very visual, and the author is not scared to shock you with the sheer cruelty that one human being can inflict on another.
The female lead character was a favourite. She is on kick-ass female! She is not going out without putting up one hell of a fight and was a star of this book. I really liked her a lot. Nobody is going to hurt the ones she loves if she has anything to do with it. She surprised me time and time again. To tell you what happens will really spoil the whole plot for you.
Trust Nobody.
With it's gritty, fast pace, graphic content and horrific representation of the darkest depths of the human psyche Jackals is a book that will appeal to readers of both extreme horror and thriller novels. You will theorise your own ending to the book but I suggest not even going there, it won't be what you expect at all. The ending totally took me by surprise.
I would hate to come face to face with these killing machines, they are not even human, the average person would not stand a chance. But despite the odds stacked against them there are some stand-out characters in this book that are bravely willing to stand up again this evil that is blotting the landscape of society. God help us all should the world ever turn this way.
I was thrilled to be part of the blog tour for this book by Stuart R Brogan and give it a well earned 4.5 stars for all that it threw at me. I am pretty thick skinned when it comes to my horror but this one even had me wriggling in my chair during certain scenes. So want to be part of the most hellish game of hide and seek, cat and mouse ever? Grab a copy. Pull up a chair and settle in but remember..
Trust nobody.
I was given an ARC of this novel. All review options are entirely my own and completely honest and unbiased.
JACKALS is the debut novel by author Stuart R. Brogan. I would definitely classify this as both horror and thriller--with a heavy dose of psychological-horror present all throughout. Aside from a few scenes I felt relatively unnecessary in the beginning of the book, this was an astonishingly good read--especially considering it is a "debut".
The beginning starts off with a bang--a bloodbath with only the use of primitive weapons, designed to cause the most brutal of deaths. The author gives virtually no information as to the "why" at this point, deciding instead to intersperse select pieces of the puzzle all throughout the length of the novel, intending the reader to find and put them together. This turned out to be a great tactic, as I couldn't stop at any point--each new chapter I wanted to delve into in order to find out more. All the while, Brogan continues to build up his characters, giving us more traits, personality, and insight into their personal lives.
. . . I have an addictive personality, hell; maybe I'm just addicted to the drama created by my own addiction . . . "
We come to realize that there are groups called "Jackals": four individuals in each group, including one with the title of "The Selected", and three followers. Their sole existence is to bring about what they refer to as "The Primitive"--what they feel is a perfect state where killing at will is the sign of true evolution and power. They kill indiscriminately, and answer only to a council of highest members that govern "The Order". Their connections are numerous, and their reach beyond belief. If not for the fact that Brogan gives enough information that actually connects a multitude of events along the way, I don't know how well this would have worked. As it stands, there were some twists that even I didn't predict, but when going back, all the clues were there.
". . . They are without doubt some of the most dangerous people out there and the worrying thing is that ninety-nine percent of the population doesn't even know they exist . . ."
Felix and his group of Jackals stumble upon Jesse and Damien Reid on the eve of their sixteenth wedding anniversary, and just like that, the hunt is on. What Felix doesn't count on though, is that Jesse is a survivor--unlike the prey, or "carrion" that they are used to. Eventually she pairs up with a drunk, sometimes addict, policeman named Lewis Class. Class is marked by the Jackals for learning too much--much more than ever expected--about them, than he should have. Together, the two make an almost comical couple at times, able to inject a little humor into this dire situation just because of their vast differences. This is a combination that works wonderfully, and continues to propel the reader along at breakneck speed each step of the way. Despite their issues, I couldn't help but root for them over the elite that wanted them dead--for nothing more than the fact that they existed.
". . . These people are nothing but cattle and we are the jackals feeding upon their carcasses. They serve no other purpose than to give our lives meaning . . . "
The story introduces many new complex characters and situations along its journey. The adrenaline seems to NEVER let up as we proceed from one scene to the next.
". . . Life was a gift that many did not deserve . . . "
Jesse's strength seems--to me--to give Class the added incentive he needs to keep fighting, even when he feels that this is a battle impossible for them to survive.
. . . this was no Hollywood movie and the good guys rarely win in the real world . . .
For a debut novel, Stuart R. Brogan has certainly made an impression on me as someone to expect great things from in the future. His intricate plots, twists, engaging characters, and unrelenting action didn't give me a single place that I felt was "good" to stop reading for the night. Looking back over the novel, I was able to discern more clearly the expertise he showed in his subtle clues and shifts.
Still, the ending caught my jaw dropping in absolute, unexpected shock.
". . . To kill is to live . . . "
JACKALS is a great, engaging novel from the first to the last page, from a strong, emerging author.
"Do not sit back and relax with this one because that nice comfortable feeling you have will disappear in a second. There are a lot of things you will never ever see coming."
JACKALS begins with explosive violence and never lets up. A small four-person group of killers assaults a local police station, then an innocent couple returning from an anniversary dinner. Their choices are not particularly random, and certainly their rationale is not: these killing teams, known as Jackals, are in service to “the Order,” a secretive cabal of highly-placed, powerful, wealthy individuals who, quite frankly, intend to rule the world (or at least the UK). Taking Darwin's Theory of Evolution to an extreme (or perhaps to a divergence), the Order foresees mankind's devolution into animalism. In the meantime, they're going to speed the process, and train their killing teams to practice extreme violence, and to believe they are sending their victims to “the Void,” and by doing so evolving themselves. All that matters is “The Primitive,” and that is what is missing from contemporary humanity.
The team focused on, which attacked the police station and the dining couple, find they may have taken on more than they expected, as some of those they consider “carrion” actually fight back. Throughout the novel it's heart-in-throat with the ups and downs, constant danger, and thrill-a-minute revelations right through to the very end.
Sigil: inscribed or painted symbol considered to have magical power.
3 Triangle Sides represent “Embrace the Primitive”
3 Vertical Lines represents the 3 members of the Jackals Team
1 Horizontal Line represents the “Selected Leader”
The “Jackals” carry out the missions or hunts for carrion for “The Order”.
It was very hard for me to believe that this is Stuart R. Brogan’s debut novel because his writing is fantastic and gripping. Brogan has a winner here as I was riveted to the pages. I will be raving about this book to everyone because it was liking watching a movie unfold and his story-line just flowed. Right from the first chapter, it is a non-stop action thriller. (This is a term or phrase I haven’t used for a very long time). One big roller coaster ride with mind blowing twists and turns that are relentless. You will love the adrenaline rush. As with his characters, the reader also has no time to come up for air. Be prepared because this is a very vivid, descriptive blood and gory hunt until the end. Perfect research was done into underground or conspiracy cults or occults. You will have to decide which one in the end. I like that we have a very strong female lead character which we need more of in the future. Plus, his character Jessie Reid works well with DI Lewis Class. I like their witty barbs and exchanges while on the run. It’s like of our whispered so-called “New World Order” was brought into light. The members start with the elite and trickle down. So, they are everywhere and you can trust no one. In the end, there will be some startling revelations. Just when I finally thought the story had ended, I turned the page to the Epilogue, that left me speechless.
Plus, I want Part Two already. Lol. I loved this novel and do not pass this one up. Put this novel on your must read list !
For husband and wife, Damien, and Jessie Reid they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. They have seen too much and Jessie has killed a member of the “Jackals”. Now the Jackals led by team member Felix is out for revenge and the hunt has just started. They believe in a “primitive higher power” so they can rise above and all carrion will be exterminated. Everyone is expendable. DI Lewis Class is involved in the investigation and gets caught up in the conspiracy and now he is on the list. Both Jessie Reid and the DI are on the run for their lives. There is no one to trust and nowhere to turn. Then Professor Michael Stokes has his own agenda and in the end, all will clash and blood will pour. Are the Reid’s involvement an accidental coincidence or a more devious plan? Who will be the winner in this deadly game? Will the hunted become the hunters?
I don't know about you, but I hate it when I'm reading a horror novel and I know who's gonna die. Jackals is NOT one of those novels and I loved it.
Jackals begins with a big surprise and delivers one powerful punch after another, right to the unexpected end.
Imagine an organization simply known as The Order that exists merely to recruit teams for the purpose of committing horrible acts of violence. The Order finds killers known as The Selected who then recruit three other killers. These teams of four are called Jackals. They only have one rule, NO GUNS...beyond that, pretty much anything goes.
For example...
"She stood on the WPC's head and tugged at the ax that was firmly wedged in the policewoman's skull. With a little effort and snapping of the bone it came free. Rosie turned and headed for the canteen door. She was happy again and wanted to find more people to play with."
There are plenty of twists to keep the reader off balance and richly drawn characters to both root for and against.
I do feel compelled to share a bit of a warning here. Different folks look for different things from their horror. This is one of the most violent books I have ever read. It is brutal beyond words, but if you're up to it, Jackals is one bloody, bold, bodacious, bad-ass read. Thoroughly recommended.
Jackals is published by Midgard Books and is available in both paperback and e-book formats.
From the author's bio - Stuart R. Brogan is a former nightclub Bouncer and proud Heathen who loves nothing more than expanding people's minds with Pagan related Non-Fiction or blowing people's brains out with fast-paced, gut-wrenching Horror and Thrillers.
Stuart currently resides in Glastonbury, UK with his long suffering Wife and man-eating Shih-Poo dog "Poppy" where he co-owns a kick-ass Viking/Asatru shop, fiercely named "Shield Maiden."
It’s a late night in a sleepy English town’s police station when all hell breaks loose. Jackals begins when three individuals enter the police station and brutally murder and then behead everyone inside. A unique sigil is painted in blood on the police station wall as a calling card and message. This sets the tone for the rest of the story. Visceral violence with sharp instruments, knives, axes, and nailed baseball bats are the order of the day.
We find out our killers work for The Order, a secret society. The Order is an Illuminati that believes in embracing the primitive urges and killing indiscriminately without remorse. The Jackals are small units who carry these tactics out. The thrill of the kill and the hunt leads us to the main plot of the story. Jesse and her husband are out for their anniversary and are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Targeted by the Jackals, Jesse has to play a game of cat and mouse or her hostage husband will be killed.
Jesse is a strong female character with much more fight than the Jackals could ever have expected. Joining her on the wrong end of the chase, we also have cocaine fueled Detective Inspector Class. He’s a policeman with a dark edge who is trying to make sense of the murders. He becomes involved through his own search for Jesse and the Jackals. Class and Jesse make a good team, and the strength and fortitude of Jesse is one of the highlights of the book.
We do get some insight into the characters of the Jackals. They are not faceless killers. Felix, the leader, has to keep control of his team. Especially Denny, who’s a homicidal nutcase, and who even wants to kill his cohorts. Other Jackals come and go. I liked the tense power plays between Felix and the other Jackals, always struggling to hold on to dominance, with the threat always there. At one point we do get a great deal of exposition about the Jackals and those behind them.
The cat and mouse game becomes extensive as Jesse and Class lead a chase across the UK. There is a third party, led by an ex-member of the Order who is also chasing the Jackals. This book is filled with violence, and the Jackals’ mantra of embracing the primitive extends to weapons, so lots of blunt force and sharp instrument trauma fills the book.
There is a twist in the tale, some unexpected shocks, and there is definitely room to expand on the Order in future books. Overall this is an enjoyable read, but more in the action realm with horror elements than the other way around.
I just couldn't go on with this anymore. I even stopped reading it, read another book and came back to it and it's just terrible.
I'm sorry, but a premise of a story being "Oh, we won't tell the police we were chased by murdering weirdos that slaughtered a whole police station because they might think we did it" is just stupid.
