Brilliant! To be honest I was scared of the bible, to actually read it, but working through this has opened the bible for to me and has been life changing. Well worth the time investment!
This is a one year Bible Study course that has been recorded. Occasionally you’ll hear ringing phones and almost every chapter you can hear planes in the background. Chapter. 68&69 the audio is a bit muffled and sounds like the mic is too far away. Just stating those things so it’s more clear as the title One Year Bible doesn’t not seem accurate. It’s a recording of logos Bible study course that meets for two hours a week. I personally would recommend reading the Bible first before listening to this Bible study. However looking at audible reviews, others have only listened to this Bible study and found it enjoyable. I appreciated his explanation of literature at the time and why words will be repeated in a section. He also does a good job of describing the geography and how it relates to a story.
I'm a product of the "gimmicky" Southern Baptist culture that has only drifted into a more shallow presentation of the gospel as time has passed. I thought as though I had somewhat of a solid foundation of typical biblical stories taught to me as a child until I picked up the Bible again in my mid-twenties to explore the book for myself. After reading several of the books, coupled with various other apologetics, I discovered how little I actually understood let alone the historical context in which these scriptures take place. Apart from my apprehension with church culture, I really wanted a better understanding of the text apart from the theater of Christian lifestyles. I finally found a good source in Dr. Creasy's Bible study.
It'll take you awhile to get through the material (the hint is in the One Year title), however, Creasy teaches from Genesis through Revelation giving historical context, focuses the listener on key principles of the books, and adds interesting factoids along the way. I'm embarrassed at my shallow understanding and know one could spend a lifetime exploring the text and the depth of those ancient stories, especially with Paul's works. It's a commitment, but if one were wanting to get an accurate overall understanding of the Bible, Creasy's lessons are a good place to start. I recommend his lessons to anyone who can spare the time to study the material.
Fantastic overview of the entire Bible. Kind of like listening to a more engaging version of the notes in a study Bible; lots of historical context, some commentary on possible interpretations and theories, and the occasional thing I disagreed with, but extremely informative and helps put a lot of the pieces together.
Dr Bill Creasy is certainly ENTHUSIASTIC - and enthusiasm in a Bible teacher is a good thing. But first, this is a Bible study, talking about the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, but reading very little of the Bible - THAT you should be doing on your own!
Dr Creasy provides a generally solid overview of the entire Bible, Genesis to Revelation (not including the Apocrypha/deuterocanonical books). It's interesting the things he chooses to focus upon and the things he chooses to gloss over. Occasionally he is wrong (e.g., insisting that Joseph never met his brother Benjamin until after Benjamin is brought to Egypt on the brothers' second trip down) - it sort of seems like he gets a story idea in his head and tries to make it fit the narrative that makes sense to him, rather than the narrative from scripture. There's definitely some eisegesis going on, and he minimizes the impact of the Holy Spirit in quite a few of the narratives. The fact that he does occasionally insert his opinion as if it were fact makes me a bit uneasy - it's a qualified endorsement of the product, and I wish I could give it an unqualified endorsement. I HOPE that people who listen to this series of lectures turn to the Bible itself and read it closely and cover-to-cover, noticing the places where Dr Creasy is at odds with the text ...but I won't hold my breath! (Let me take this moment to recommend the spectacular reading of the Bible by David Suchet, available via Audible - beautifully done).
The live recordings are of adequate quality - and sometimes there are the sounds of planes coming in for a landing (!!) and sirens outside - not standard Audible fare! BUT I'm grateful to have access to this series and I expect I'll listen to it again, flaws and all.
I was an atheist for most of my life and found Christianity again only in the last few years. I needed something to help me understand what I was reading in the Bible from a trustworthy source. I was fortunate enough to come across these lectures on Audible which I found to be enlightening and even fun to listen to. I feel like I am understanding much of what is in the Bible for the first time. In addition to delivering the content in a digestible and entertaining manner, he provides some cultural and historical context to the stories which I found essential in deepening my understanding of the Bible. I would highly recommend these to anyone who interested in learning more about the stories written in the Bible in a very literal way. I look forward to starting some of his more in-depth lectures on specific books in the Bible soon.
I have studied scripture with Dr. Creasy for years. He makes scripture come alive, providing cultural and historical context. Under his tutelage scripture really becomes The Living Word of God! When I had my national radio show he was the ONLY regular guest I invited on for an hour each week. He is my favorite teacher of all time! I recommend this book wholeheartedly and enthusiastically! My favorite Bible teacher. Provides an amazing perspective book by book. I highly recommend this on audiobook as the introduction, followed by his book by book studies afterward. Dr. Creasy presents the Bible from a literature, historic and geographic perspective that simply makes the whole thing come to life.
Dr. Creasy illuminates the Bible and aided in bringing to me a much deeper comprehension of it. He makes it 3 dimensional by sharing the times, the social structure, the culture, the context, and the meaning of the vocabulary within the Bible. He sometimes performs it as if an actor in a play and also shares light hearted jests. I highly recommend Dr. Creasy’s One Year Bible to everyone!
This was one of the most interesting enlightening expositions of the Bible I have encountered. I thoroughly enjoyed at and will probably listen to it all over again!!
Truly the best decision I ever made, downloading this book. I have read the Bible cover to cover three times but this is the first time I have an understanding of how the Old Testament and New correlate. How books in the Bible relate to each other, how incidents were foretold or how miracles were repeated through different characters leading up to Jesus. I understand so much and can't wait to start it all over again!
