The problem with being an endangered species? Everyone wants a piece.
When the media broadcasts Claire Sommers’ horrific (and accidental) debut into Supernatural society, it’s time to face the consequences: like landing on the radar of those who nearly killed off her kind. To top it off, if Claire doesn’t get the help of a certain Alpha, her succubus side will starve to death.
Good thing he’s hunting her down.
Too bad Claire can’t afford to be found.
THE HUNTER is the direct sequel to The Fervor. Sink your fangs into this dark, paranormal installment of the Sinful Supes series today.
XANDRIE KOVAK writes for mature teens. X.KOVAK writes for adults. Just about any XK book is rife with beautiful monsters, reader discretion advised labels, and romance of the dark variety. Basically, XK writes the kind of stories your mother warned you about.
I got a free ARC to review, but my opinions are - as always - my own.
And, as always, Kovak writes a good story. HOWEVER - and this is important - DO NOT read The Hunter until you have read The Fervor and Beauty & Beast. The events in The Hunter take place partly during the same time period as Beauty & Beast, but The Hunter is definitely a sequel. It is likely to be at least a bit puzzling if you haven't at least read The Fervor, and preferably also Beauty & Beast.
Since both of those books are also very good, it shouldn't be a hardship!
One thing I do like about Kovak's stories is that her characters all have a distinct personality; no interchangeable-alphas here. Plus, she thinks about consequences - particularly where Claire's succubus talents are concerned; it gives the stories a little bit more bite than your run-of-the-mill erotic paranormal romance/fantasy.
This is a little short novella - only 88 pages according to my Kindle, and full of action. Old characters reappear, new characters are introduced - plus some interesting hints of what might happen later. Claire is developing - she's learned to control and use her power, so it's going to be interesting to see where that goes in the future. It's clear that Claire and Lucas' relationship isn't going to be all plain sailing; a mental bond, it seems, does not mean that miscommunication doesn't happen. Plus, they are both strong-willed people, so it's going to be interesting to see where Kovak goes with that.
All in all, this is a nice continuation of Claire's story, and I'm eager for more. :-)
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Xandrie Kovak!
First, I want to commend Xandrie's writing. I have been reading her books since she first began writing this series, and I have been noticing a quality-filled progression from book to book. For one, her writing becomes more fluid and natural. I have a weird brain, so I'm going to say that it literally fills the page, in the sense that there are no disjointed parts in the text, and everything is effortlessly continuous.
Second, my doppelganger is amazing. In this installment, Xandrie picks up right where her debut novel, The Fervor, left off - and left us the readers gasping for more. Throughout The Hunter, Claire begins to learn more about her powers, and begins to ever so slowly and painfully embrace her supe side. Claire has become fierce and confident, and I like how she makes lets her mind guide her, and not her emotions - most of the time.
I hadn't realized ow much I missed Lucas and Claire together until I started reading this. It hit me all at once, and I didn't want to put this book down. I was both enchanted by the nostalgia of Claire and Lucas, and Xandrie's skillful writing.
Overall, I was very satisfied with this sequel, and CANNOT wait until the next one!
I hate giving this book three stars, because the writing itself is wonderful. Let me just say that now, the writing is wonderful. It's beautiful, it feels real, and it sucks you right in. I read this story in one sitting but...that being said I have some major issues.
I didn't care for the ending, it didn't feel real enough but I probably would have made it 4.5 stars if it weren't for the epilogue. The epilogue is what killed it, to me as a reader, it took all of these great plot lines and just threw it out the window. I can't say why because that's very spoilery, but the ending was too resolute for what this story felt like. Too many questions left unanswered, or answered in a hurry.
I loved this series, and the author does something well that is very hard to find--a good blend of plot and sex. I typically don't find that authors are good at both, she is fabulous at it. That being said, I can't give this more than three stars with the ending it has. I will definitely read more of her books, but I really hope this isn't a pattern. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
**Editing to add three years later--I still love this series and am salty it ended like this. I would love continuations in this world.**
I was so excited I couldn’t wait to finally read more of Lucas and Claire’s story following "The Fervor". I love the world and characters Xandrie creates and how she just brings them to life. She does a fantastic job of drawing the reader into her stories. I loved how the personalities these characters had were their own and unique in a way that was different to the next.
This book begins right after "The Fervor" and continues Claire and Lucas's story. It is necessary to have read at least "The Fervor" prior to reading this book, however, I would recommend reading "Beauty & Beast" also, Camila and West's story, to help explain some of the other characters. This is such a great series, but this is my least favorite of the books. This is mainly because the ending.
The epilogue is what killed it for me, it felt rushed. I would loved to have read a longer epilogue or something that was a little more detailed.
I still love this author and unique storyline she has created. I’m eager to read more and can’t wait to know more about the other characters.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book, but bought it to show my support for the author's work. I am voluntarily giving my honest review.
I stayed up until 1 am to finish this book even though I had to get up at 7 am. And I regret nothing. Claire and Lucas are fantastic. I loved every minute of this book, well, except for Vick. I wanted to see him tortured. My brain is definitely mush after this series because I have a serious book hangover.
This story takes place in a parallel timeline to the last one I read. Because of this, I might have known how things were going to go down ahead of time, but it really didn’t hurt the story at all (especially since I took some time between books).
We left Claire as she made the disastrous decision to join the hunters. Sure, it was supposedly to help protect her mate, but who knows how much truth there was to that. She’s taken away to Australia where she’s thrust at a famous incubus for some much needed training. This training, however, would have worked better if she could actually feed off anyone other than her mate. It isn’t all wasted time, though, because she gets to perfect her chameleon abilities and make some interesting new friends along the way.
Lucas, however, doesn’t actually have the full story. He knows that his mate is starving herself to death without his feeding her, but doesn’t have all the information he needs to believe she’s not a horrible person. Ultimately it’s Claire’s BFF that ends up forcing her hand and getting her to run back to her mate. It might not have been the most pleasant reunion because they are both stubborn idiots. At least they’ve got chemistry! All in all, this read like the end of the series – is it? I have no clue, but I wish there was more!
Rather strange ending, though. Sounded like the author didn't want to write another book. The whole epilogue could have literally been swapped for a third book in the series—maybe even a fourth. Oh, well. *shrugs*
I'd been waiting for this book ever since I read The Fervor and the other two books. I love the teenage-like, fast paced writing. It conveys the emotions of a manic human, so much so that Claire seemed much younger than 20/21. I'm still trying to figure out if that's actually a good/bad thing. I'm not too sure, but I think it's a bit closer to the bad side ... yeah, sorry!
The amount of comma splices in this book (and the previous ones) astounds me. Seriously. Those are really annoying. The lack of commas before terms of reference/address are even worse, though. Yikes.
Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this book, and I totally recommend it ... to a younger audience, who are more prone to look passed all the errors I corrected. (Pretty sure the author could view them somehow on Amazon. I mean, if an author can see what readers highlight, they can surely see the comments/notes they make. Right? There are far too many notes for me to list.)
The Hunter was a very enjoyable read for me. There were points I was frustrated, points where I was worried, points where I was irritated and points where I was happy. The story starts off from a "broken" perspective of both Claire and Lucas. The connection and feelings between them are complex and complicated, but simple at the same time. I came to like characters I had doubts about and was pretty clear throughout on who I didn't like. Towards the end I was worried about where the story was headed, but was very happy and satisfied in the end. I would highly recommend The Hunter, and Xandrie Kovak's other books, to reader that enjoy the steamy and supernatural, but be aware these books are meant for adults. My other wish is that the books were longer as I finished this, begin to end, in an evening. Looking forward to future works from Xandrie! * I received an Advanced Reader edition of The Hunter, but also purchased the Kindle edition. *
Claire & Lucas are captured by the US Hunters. To set Lucas free, Claire promises to work for US Hunters. She tries to give up her bond to Lucas before they ship her overseas to an Incubus named Gabriel. It's Gabriel's job to ease her transition and teach her what it means to be a succubus. The only problem, alpha bonds are hard to break. Will Claire be able to break that bond and feed or will she starve to death. And what about the tall dark stranger named Vicks. He's a US Hunter that wants Claire as a partner. She's his last ditch effort to stay with the Hunters.
This book was a little naughty, a little sexy and it just enforces that an alpha bond need to be taken serious. I really enjoyed this story, although, I'd also like to kick Claire in the pants.. LOL She does a lot of kind of stupid things but in the end will it all work out? Guess you better read it to find out.
O-M-G what a ride.. .so many things happened and I was sitting at the edge of my seat for most of it. you definitely have to read the fervor before this one bc you won't know what's going on. we seen Claire being taken by vicks and how it devastated Lucas. i felt so bad for Claire to be ripped away from Lucas and vice versa. the things she had to endure and see cannot be undone. the bonus about being "trapped" is that she got to learn more about what she is and how to wield that power even if she refuses to use it. however being away from her mate is taking the toll on her...badly. will Claire escape and find Lucas? lies, deception, unexpected events ring throughout the book. don't want to say more fearing I will give spoilers. reviewed the advanced reader copy from the author by giving my opinion of the book. it def keeps you on your toes!!
The hunter takes place right from the cliff hanger of the fervor but also takes place alongside beauty and the beast so I advise you to read those first... You won't be disappointed.
Loves strong but an alphas bond is stronger. Claire agrees to betaken away to train as a us hunter for Luca's freedom. This story is well written it dose have adult material in it but its done tastefully and dosnt take away from the book or story. Ms Kovak is a powerful writer who grips her readers from the go. Sadly this book has ended on a blunt ending but has also left the door open for more Claire and Lucas in the future maybe.
Claire agrees to join the Hunters so they will free Lucas. She is taken to the mansion of an incubus who also happens to be a famous movie star. There she learns more abut her nature but is starving herself because she refuses to feed.
The first book was dark, sexy fun...this one was just kinda fluffy and blah. Claire and Lucas shift emotions so fast I'm not sure what the heck is between them. And nothing is explained. The Hunter organization is vague, the wolf pack is super vague, there's random characters that are introduced for seemingly no reason. This just did not hold up to the first book.
when reading this I'm swept away to a world that i want to belong in. Another exciting chapter in the sinfulsupes world, I'm wanting book 4 already. Bad ass Claire is my favorite to think that she went from being scared to whipping ass makes me excited. I love the fact that Claire is a heroine who is real and relatable. Now Vaughn is a character I love and hate, I love that she does what she has to in order to survive but I hate how she does some of what she does. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy
This book was great!!! The moment I received this book I couldn't put it down. I waited to see what would happen next and now I can't wait for the rest of the series to come out. The Hunter answered questions that I had from reading The Fervor and Beauty and Beast. I LOVED IT!!!! Now I'm impatient for the next books. This series is a MUST READ!!!!!
This is a continuation of the Sinful Supes series, and I LOVED it. It has Claire training to be a Hunter to be a partner to someone who is a monster in every sense. Join her to find out if she can find a way to be with her mate, the yummy Lucas. I can't wait for the next book, there had better be one.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book and then I bought it... I have been waiting for this book to come out after reading "The Fervor". I really wanted to hear the ending of Claire's story and Xandrie doesn't let you down.
It was a good read but I felt that the author gave to much away in the epilogue. The story for me was a little repetitive. It's just not my cup of tea anymore. But if you like this kind of story feel free to read it.
Fantastic ending to a fantastic couple. I love the ending of Lucas and Claire's story! Although I want to see what kind of adventures they would go on for Claire being U.S. Hunter, and how Lucas would handle it. I voluntarily reviewed a ARC of this book.
Such a good book I need a drink afterwards. Gawd. I loved this series and I'm sad it's over for now. Le sigh. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.
OMG this is one seriously amazing book, Xandrie Kovak just gets better and better. In this story we finally we find out what has been happening to Claire. I devoured this book in one reading and totally ignored my family until I had finished it. I couldn't put this down, these books are seriously addictive. This was longer than most of the other books, somewhere between a novella and a short novel.
In this instalment we meet characters from all the previous books in a story that has it all - humour, action, superpowers and some very hot 'n' steamy love action. The book starts where we left Claire in The Fervor and runs concurrently with Beauty and the Beast - but read that first to avoid spoilers. The writing is as amazing as ever, with a plot that has some wonderful twist, turns and surprises. We sort of get a resolution of the Lucas/Claire situation but not in the way most of us would have guessed and with the door still very open for future stories.
Whilst this story focuses mainly on Claire, and is written from her POV, we also get to see a lot of Lucas (and why wouldn't you want that - although the fact that he is the same age as my son's is slightly worrying to me!), a chunk of the Red Crescent Pack, Hunter Carson Vicks, Gabe (an incubus) and Vaughn the vampire. I tried to pick out my top 3 scenes but to be honest the whole book is so amazing I just couldn't narrow it down!
If you've read any of the other Sinful Supe books then you know what to expect and you'll already have read or bought this. If you're wondering whether to buy this or not my advice is to one click it now, you won't regret it.
The Hunter has a small overlap with The Fervor and then continues straight after, giving you a snapshot into both points of view. Claire is doing what she can to protect Lucas, even as she works through her feelings that are quite simply overwhelming. She has a lot to learn, but as Vaughn says, she's not so much of a bunny this time around. There is plenty going on as Claire has to learn how to control her Succubus powers, take lessons from an Incubus, as well as dealing with Vicks, AND try not to die from Succubus starvation!
This is excellently written, with no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow. The characters continue to go from strength to strength, and Claire and Lucas are fantastic together! I love this couple so much!!! Although this book is classed as the sequel to The Fervor, I would highly recommend that you read the whole series as there are brilliant insights into Camilla and West, as well as other characters, which help to round off the whole storyline. I really hope that this isn't the last we will hear from them, although it's not entirely clear from the epilogue. A wonderful, raw, violent, passionate world and I LOVED IT. Absolutely recommended by me.

Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Apr 29, 2017
Don't read this book until you have read The Fervor and Beauty and Beast (the first two books in the series) which won't be a hardship at all. All three books are well written, engaging and imaginative. I can also recommend Animus, the prequel to The Fervor, which is available as a free ebook exclusively on Xandrie's website. The main characters all have their own personalities and are very different in their abilities but their bonds with each other are either already strong (Claire and Camilla, Lucas and West) or growing stronger by the day (Lucas and Claire, Camilla and West). The other characters are also individuals in their own right and are perfect foils to Claire and Lucas in this continuation of their story. Vaughn, Gabe and Beckett are worthy additions and I hope they feature in future books. I received an Advance Reader's Copy of this book but this review is my own opinion and is not influenced by the author.
I received an ARC of this book and voluntary reviewed. For people who liked The Fervor and Beauty and the Beast, it’s time for Luke to get his mate back where she belong: in his embrace. But nothing as easy as it seems and trust is strained between the two sup as The Hunter is trying to force Claire to follow her contract. And the fact that she is dying is just a small part of the problem. Add some “miscommunications” and the bad picture of a bestie and now you cannot tell who is The Hunter. Fervor, Ardor and Amor all in neon blue and yellow gold!
Wow! From bunny to bad ass and took us along for the ride. Thanks!! Anything more would give away the story. Fun read and eager for more from this series.
This has been honest voluntary feed back of an advanced reviewer copy read with I-books TTS for impaired readers, thanks.
I was super excited for this sequel and it definitely did not disappoint. I absolutely love Claire and Lucas. The struggle they both had endure but to also see them grow and come together as a couple was amazing. Overall enjoyable and entertaining read I'm eagerly looking forward to reading more in this series. I voluntarily read and review this ARC I haven't been compensated in any way.
"I voluntarily received an ARC for an honest review"
I love this series, and this book is no exception. I love that Claire and Lucas finally got everything out in the open as to why Claire had to leave. I love the part where Lucas came to her through their bond to help "feed" her so she wouldn't die.
This book is so incredible that i finished it in like 3 hours. it was amazing.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy. This is the story for Claire and Lucas after The Fervor, and a part of it overlaps in time with Beauty and the Beast. I like that these stories for different couples are all going on nearly at the same time, and that a conversation works as a teaser for the next (hopefully) story about Dom. I am a little disappointed at how it ends, since some problems still remain. So I really hope that this isn’t the end for Clair and Lucas, but that they’ll have another story (or more) and get to really finish Vicks. I also wanted more of Locas’ POV, and would’ve preferred the way it alternated between Camilla and West in Beauty and the Beast. The characters were again great & fun to read, with even more interesting characters now. I liked to visit the author’s website and check the images of the characters as I read.
