The story centers around Leanna, Jalon's 6 ft tall, mechanically-inclined, inline and ice skating, tag playing, fishing, messy, housework-hating, terrible cook of a sister. She has claimed all her life that she is the female equivalent of a confirmed bachelor, but that is going to change in a way that will surprise no one more than the protagonists themselves.
Leanne has always been grateful that Daniel Raber, a transplant to Birch Creek from another, much stricter district, a man who specializes in the repair of small engines, gave her a chance to prove herself an adept mechanic. She has been good for the business, reliable, able to take over if Daniel needs to leave, but she will soon have to be fired, and this happens around the time Roman tries once again to reconcile with Daniel, causing misunderstandings. The one thing their grandmother wanted was for Roman to rejoin the church and for Daniel and Roman to reconcile and support one another. She has not given up, even after she has gone to be with Jesus. She has set some letters to be delivered automatically to both boys periodically, encouraging them in their walk of faith and their reconciliation attempts.
And so Roman returns to the Birch Creek church, confesses the sin of leaving the church when he was a full fledged member, and Daniel takes Roman into his home, and allows him to work - but he has no intention of making it easy, giving Roman scutwork to do and refusing to let him repair anything, even though he and Leanne were struggling to get work done in a timely fashion - and then he fires Leanne. He has no choice, but won't explain to Roman, who eventually comes up with the idea to work with Leanne to make a workshop on her own property that takes business consignments only, work from Daniel's workshop that he brings over, retrieves, and pays Leanne to do.
The problem only worsens as Barbara, Daniel's wife, keeps miscarrying. Every time she gets pregnant, he worries about her doing just about anything and loses sleep trying to watch over her 24/7, forgetting that is God's job, falls behind in his work, still won't allow Roman to help, is barely sleeping most nights, living on excessive amounts of coffee. Daniel is so far behind in his work that he works on Sunday one day, which is against the Ordnung, when he is falling asleep despite caffeine but is desperate to catch up even a little. The result is carelessness with dangerous equipment that leaves him badly injured, and the stress causes yet another miscarriage that Barbara is loath to tell Daniel about, for fear it will make him worse.
The cause of the firing is malicious and false gossip, but it must be addressed to protect all those implicated. But how long will it be before the Bishop confronts the gossiping? Is the growing friendship between Roman and Leanne just that, or will it lead to more? Adam and Karen have been drawing closer, but Adam seems reluctant to propose. Will he finally take the safety off & go for the target of his love, or will he back down despite Karen's reassurances? Will Malachi end up with a baby brother or a baby sister? And what about Leanne's best friend, petite Ivy, who has met someone on a trip to Michigan, who promised to write, but 3 months back home and Ivy has heard nothing? And Ivy gets a peculiar request from a partially itinerant auctioneer; will she consent?
