The ghosts of the past are haunting Genie McQueen.
The dead have been trailing in Genie’s shadow for months, but now they’ve decided to step into the light. When her supposedly dead mother returns from the grave very much alive, Genie knows trouble is stirring.
Mercy McQueen isn’t interested in mother-daughter bonding time. She’s back with vengeance on her mind and will stop at nothing to make her children’s lives a living hell. She’s brought along some spooks from Genie’s past—familiar faces and ones she had forgotten—to turn every waking hour into a nightmare.
The young werewolf alpha will need to use every trick up her sleeve if she’s going to get the dearly departed back into their graves. And she’ll need to face some skeletons buried so deep in the closet she forgot they were there.
Defeating Mercy will take Genie from the depths of the bayou to the streets of New York, and might just need a little something Secret to get the job done.
Sierra Dean is a reformed historian. She was born and raised in the Canadian prairies and is allowed annual exit visas in order to continue her quest of steadily conquering the world one city at a time. Making the best of the cold Canadian winters, Sierra indulges in her less global interests: drinking too much tea and writing urban fantasy.
Ever since she was a young girl she has loved the idea of the supernatural coexisting with the mundane. As an adult, however, the idea evolved from the notion of fairies in flower beds, to imagining that the rugged-looking guy at the garage might secretly be a werewolf. She has used her overactive imagination to create her own version of the world, where vampire, werewolves, fairies, gods and monsters all walk among us, and she’ll continue to travel as much as possible until she finds it for real.
She’s also a book lover (of course!), obsessive collector of OPI nailpolish and the owner of way too many pairs of shoes.
Man, those McQueen sisters are a hoot. Not to bad guys or anything, though. I mean, they mostly kill the bad guys without asking questions (Secret more than Genie, but that's to be expected because have you met Secret. HA!) and that's kinda rough on those bad guys and all, but the McQueens are FABULOUS while doing it.
You know, if by 'fabulous' you mean they shoot fast and sometimes make things explode just by thinking about it real hard.
Really, the McQueen sisters ROCK.
(Also, I didn't realize how much I missed Secret's particular brand of crazy until she was doing her thing here. Go, Secret!)
But this book isn't ALL about those McQueens getting their family bonding on. There's also other stuff in the works. Like the nagging mystery of that burned woman who's been following Genie around. And Mercy showing up in the flesh after being killed by Secret AGES ago. And other dead people popping up unexpectedly. SO UNEXPECTEDLY.
In other words, you get a nice (somewhat bloody) family reunion AND a few answers. A few more questions, too, but that's to be expected, right? Because things aren't neat and tidy for the McQueens and Genie seems to attract some of the messier bits. Am I worried about what's to come? OF COURSE. But Genie has a way of landing on her feet and I'm sure she'll figure things out. Hopefully. Probably.
This author is one that I always forget how great her books are until I read them again. I have to stop that. Anyway, we are back with Genie and friends, and she has a lot on her plate including the fact that some people from her past are back from the dead. But how and why did this happen, and why do they all, excluding one, want her dead? I loved how well-written this book was and seeing characters we haven’t seen for awhile. Added to that was a great plot and non-stop action, and I love to be surprised about happenings in a book, and I was definitely surprised at some of the plot twists. Ms. Dean really writes a great book the reader doesn’t want to put down, and this one doesn’t disappoint in any way. And, wow, that ending! Can I have the next book now, please? If you love great urban fantasy, start this series now! Well, start the Secret series and work your way to this one. You won’t regret it! Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.
Oh, okay. Now everything has been filled in. Though perhaps there should be a note somewhere in the main series about reading this spinoff before proceeding so things make more sense since the author didn't stop to offer a better/more thorough explanation in the main series...?
