Spot and Smudge #3

Let Slip the Pups of War

Rate this book

The exciting conclusion of the Spot and Smudge trilogy! This fast paced, inventive, black-witted tale uncovers the riddle of the pups' secrets and exposes the terrifying forces behind the accelerator compound. It also brings together the richly drawn characters from the earlier books and a host of intriguing new players, hurling them into a hunt that spans the globe and poses the ultimate test for this cunning family and their amazing pups.

“You two pups would barely be a wee snack for the killers around here.”

Fisho Mwale is a noble, simple farmer. A little shake-shake beer and a few of his daughter-in-law’s corn biscuits are enough to put a smile on his lined, dark face. He and his son Fulfort toil over a patch of rocky dirt in northern Zambia that until recently had provided well for them. It’s been full drought for going on three years and now they’re struggling to keep his young son’s wife and children fed. The father and son are forced to travel far south to find paying work. In the slums of Lusaka they sign on with a pair of animal parts traffickers and are sent to the most prominent, most lucrative, and most dangerous animal preserve in South Africa, as poachers. In his youth Fisho had been on hunts, and been hunted. He’s also seen security men and their dogs up close in the mines, but he’s never seen police dogs like the ones at this preserve. They aren’t like other dogs. They don’t hunt like other dogs, they don’t move like other dogs, and they don’t look away when they lock onto you with their too-smart stare. Fisho soon realizes he and his son are trapped between men they can’t trust and these insanely effective hunters…and he wonders which will be the end of them first...

Tian and Harley Tzeng are inseparable cousins who have had each other’s backs since primary school. They are also members of a lethal family who run the underbelly of Hong Kong and are bent on avenging their fallen. Something has gone horribly wrong in the states. Both of their mothers and Tian’s brother Liko have been taken out by an unknown clan from a small town in Massachusetts. Grandfather is sending the boys and the rest of their equally deadly cousins to hunt down the perpetrators and to exact the appropriate payback. Backed by unlimited funds and weapons most armies can’t get their hands on it appears nothing can stop them…nothing but this underestimated little family…or perhaps the traitor in the cousins’ own midst…

FBI director Douglas Barton doesn’t like what he sees. Some of his sensitive internal files have gone missing and his own organization is giving his most heinous corporate scumbags a free pass. He’s been trying to nail the criminal organization behind Orthus but the slick psychopath Semion Mogevich and his deranged daughter Katia are always one step ahead of him. Barton hasn’t played all of his cards yet, however, and with the Mogevichs’ turning their attention to Pembury that little family and their special dogs might just be the bait he needs to get the upper hand this time…and flush out a rat in the process...

Think a small town boy from Wisconsin, whose first job was pumping poo out of RVs while reading everything he could get his smelly hands on, puts himself through school bartending and after thirty years in tech management at Sony and Microsoft leaves to travel a lot, and pen his experiences with rescued littermate pups and Scottish in-laws. The result is the Spot and Smudge series; Horror/Thriller/Genetic Engineering Sci-fi that one reviewer called "a deliciously twisted, darkly humorous tail".

Yeah, I've got some stories...and maybe a few issues.

The Pups Rule!!!

Here at the end of all three of these tales, a sense of how the world would be if the proposition of these stories were realized hits pretty hard. Book One started slow and picked up steam, Book Two developed a steady momentum that was nicely realized throughout and left me really wanting to read Book Three. This last was actually three stories in one, the first took a bit long to wind up, the second could have been a bit more in the science department and a bit less in the war department and would have possibly enlarged the sense of wonder the reader gets left with when the possibilities cross the mind. In the end, it's quite a lot of what now as it didn't really wind down as smoothly as perhaps it should have. It would be more the readers wish to see the ending in the same locale as the major ending action with a bit of evil left lurking for another day... but, we wind up in the ancestral home with wee ones who Da is not known... all in all these three are great together as a package not as separates. If left as separates most will not complete the first... just sayin'. And that's the only negative in the lot...

There are three books to date, this is the last in the series and I obviously liked the first two enough to get here. You don't have to like dogs a lot to enjoy these books for although Spot and Smudge are indeed dogs these books are about the extended family they were made part of and their adventures. And Lord what adventures they have. There are some rough passages ,murder and mayhem, but the story is about a transborder family of proud, strong good people. It's a whale of a yarn and just plain fun... ly of proud

This the third book and last....to date, in a series and it's main protagonists are indeed dogs, but you don't have to be a "dog person" to enjoy this read. For these are stories about grand family.

A common family of uncommon virtue; good, honest, loving and courageous individuals who when confronted by evil, when challenged by the most extraordinary circumstances do not look away but rather confront it at great cost. They do the right thing, man and boy, woman and girl, young and old, dog, coyote and wolf. They do the right thing.

So I liked it and to be honest I love dogs......cats too.

Funny, witty and terrifying all at once.

As I began reading this third book not too far into it yet, i dreamed about Spot and Smudge and their ad ventures in Africa wholly based on the front cover art. So I'm saying that I have been totally engrossed in the story and in love with this family. I have recommended it to a few of my friends already and plan on recommending it to more.
The wonderful insights into the dogs minds is remarkable and unexpected but totally believable. The trials these people (and I include the pups) are well thought out and move seamlessly from one catastrophe to another . at the conclusion of the story I feel fulfilled and completed. A lot of authors tend to leave me hanging, looking for a more satisfactory ending wishing they had tied up some loose ends. This is certainly not the case here, thank Mr Udulutch for this wonderful wild run.

Great Series

Not my usual genre, but boy am I glad I read this series. The love from the main family unit was inspiring and the genetically altered dogs just amazing. Read this series! Lots of action, science fiction, and some wonderful characters! I really enjoyed it! The head of the family Jean is called Mimi by her family. It made me look up Mimi, since my only granddaughter decided at age two that was what this grandma was to be called. A big smile on my face wondering if my Great Grandpa wasn't an angel on her shoulders whispering that name to her to keep our Scottish and Irish roots alive. This book makes you want to know the main characters, they are wonderfully written and this author has produced a very talented series that I couldn't put down!

How bloody dare you! Not only making this sad bird shed a few tears when some random guy turned up at the vets, but then later the same night, whilst being denied sleep (9pmish through to 5am, with a break of two to make a brew) a few more at the den.
Although these 3 books did supply so many more smiles.
If your a dog lover, you will love these books.
If like me, your a crazy cat person, you will love these books.
Actually, if you have a love for any none human creatures, you'll love these books.
If you don't all I can say is..... your bums out the window......and we're sending the pups 'round...

Pups of War

This was the final book in the series of three books about Spot and Smudge. I totally loved the pups and all their adventures with Dan, Alia, Kels, Ben, Mimi, and Hamish. This book takes them all the way to Africa. It was a fantastic book. The only downside was all the all the foreign words I couldn't understand. I kept going from the word to Wikipedia with no luck at the translation. This is the reason I gave it 4 stars. All in all a super book and I would highly recommend this book as well as the other two.

Amazing, this series just keeps getting better & better! Even more action, drama, suspense & danger!

The story plotlines continue to be exotic & exciting. This time the adventures move to Africa. More animal friends join the good guys team & more dastardly bad guys join the evil team. Stand back because the brown stuff is really going to hit the fan now! All heck is really breaking lose.
Keep up the great work, Robert, I'm really looking forward to book 4!
Read this book, you'll be very glad you did!!

Love this series

I've always wondered what it would be like to get a response when I talk to my dog. I could only hope that she wouldn't comment on my weight or how I look naked. Udulutch goes way beyond my meager concerns to craft an incredible journey for two New England pups that ends up taking them from one adventure after another along with their human and canine families. It's a story of love, revenge, hope and sadness that might cause you to use a few tissues along the way.

Another Grand Adventure with Spot & Smudge and Family! Their family & friends just keeps growing and the pesky bad guys just keep coming!

From wolves to coyote to painted dogs the canines just keep coming too as Spot, Smudge and family have to escape and flee the country from the vengeful Chinese mafia & crazed military weapons developers who want to capture and kill the family for the secrets of their enhanced abilities.

I'm just glad that Mimi's cranky old goat, Mr. Watt manages to survive and is reunited with the family!

Another amazing Spot & Smudge book!!

I absolutely love these books! Reading about the pups and their family and growing circle of friends makes me want to keep reading and forget about anything else that I might need to take care of. (A long-‘winded’ way of saying the books are impossible to put down, lol!!) The action in this installment seemed like it got started quicker than in books 1 and 2, but just as in those books, once it started, it didn’t slow down until the end! If you love animals and especially are a fan of dogs, be sure to read these books!!!

Great books

I just finished the 3rd book and can't to read the fourth book. This is the 1st review I have left after reading many, many books on my kindle, so I really liked it. No sexy part, no real bad words. I am going to recommend this book to my grand children.
Plenty of action, and dogs you want to !ove and own. Read the 1st book and you will be caught in their world.

Awesome!

Hard to believe it's possible but these books just keep getting better and better! The imagination and extremely important characters are amazing. I wish my dog could communicate like Smudge and Spot. And, by the way, our girl Smudge has obviously had a liason which I hope we'll learn more about! From Hong Kong to America, Africa and Scotland, our favorite characters really get around.

Once again this author has wowed me with his superb storytelling.

Totally addicted to these pups!

I would give it ten stars if I could. Love the family, especially Mimi and Hamish. The third book was a little more violent than the others, and I found myself worrying about young Ben being exposed to much of it, not to mention his participation, but that's how caught up you get with this family. Only wish Mr. Udulutch would include a Scottish glossary!

Please. More!

These books about Spot and Smudge are amazing. There has to be at least one more that will tell about the three young pups that were so casually mentioned at the end of this book.

So much Fun!

I saw these books on Facebook and needing a new series, downloaded them all. They are quite fantastic, but I loved the escape to "how cool would it be if my dog could do this"?

Better and Better

The books get better and better.
My only problem is a small one, proofreading needs to be done before going to press. I’d be happy to volunteer to do that on the 5th book.
I’m very much looking forward to the next one.

Great stuff,especially for animal lovers!

This is one of the most innovative and best realized bits of animal oriented speculative fiction I've ever read. Usual itch is an excellent wordsmith with a vivid imagination. These books do not disappoint.

I love dogs and this series has two of the most interesting dog protagonists ever. The books are action packed, interesting and filled with well developed characters. I have loved the first three and am sure I will love the rest.

Super fun read..!!!!

I only have one complaint, who’s the mother, father of the 3 black pups lapping at Mimi’s tea? Is there going to be a 4th book?
