(1923– 2003) was one of the popular Hindi magazine story writers of the 20th century and a pioneer in writing Indian women based fiction. She was awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to Hindi literature in 1982. Almost all of her works are in print today and widely available across India.

She garnered a massive following in the pre-television 60s and 70s, as her literary works were serialised in Hindi magazines like Dharmayug and Saptahik Hindustan, and in TV serials n films.

Upon her death in 2003, Government of India described her contributions to Hindi literature as, “…in the death of Shivani the Hindi literature world has lost a popular and eminent novelist and the void is difficult to fill”

दोहा पूरा किये देते हैं:

मुख पर डाले केस
चल ख़ुसरो घर अपने
साँझ भई चहुँ देस

काफी आगे तक पढ़ते हुए अंदाज़ा नहीं होता के इस दोहे का कहानी से क्या लेना-देना है। लेकिन जैसे ही कहानी के आखरी पड़ाव पर पहुँचते हैं, शिवानी की इस बेहद संजीदगी से रची कहानी का शीर्षक खुद-ब-खुद बोल पड़ता है। कहानी में दिखाया गया है कि सूत्रधार मिस कुमुद जोशी, एक "लोअर मिडिल क्लास" परिवार की सब से बड़ी बेटी, पिता के देहांत के बाद कैसे सब कुछ सँभालती हुयी, अपने आप को खो बैठती है। कहानी चाहे ही "फिक्शन" हो लेकिन मैं एहसास कर सकता हूँ कि भारतवर्ष के बहुत से परिवार कुछ इसी तरह की कठिनाईओं से गुज़रे होंगे। इसी लिए पढ़ कर एक ज़ाती-सा राबता लगा।

यह मेरी शिवानी की लिखी पहली किताब थी और मेरे कुछ दोस्त तो बेहद पागल हैं इन के पीछे। और पढ़ने के बाद मैं कहूँगा उन का पागलपन एक दम स्वीकार्य है। मैंने यह किताब सफर करते वक़्त "शताब्दी" में शुरू की। ज़रा धीरे पढता हूँ तो 4 घंटे के सफ़र में महज़ 42 पन्ने ही पढ़ पाया। लेकिन इन 42 पन्नों में ऐसा "इंटरेस्ट" जागा के बाद के 50 पन्ने घर पहुँचते ही यूँ पढ़ डाले। समय का भास ही नहीं हुआ। शायद एक प्रख्यात लेखक/लेखिका की यही पहचान है।

समय मिले तो ज़रूर पढियेगा। बिलकुल निराशा नहीं होगी।

आम बोलचाल में भी कितनी सुंदर हिन्दी कही पढ़ी लिखी जा सकती है, उसका उदाहरण शिवानी की लिखाई में मिलता है। और इस किताब में जो दो कहानियाँ हैं, मानवीय भावों को निचोड़ कर निकाल दिया है शिवानी ने, विशेषकर एक स्त्री जीवन में। पहली कहानी एक बहुत ही अपारंपरिक स्थिति पर आधारित है और उसमें देखा जाए तो तीन अलग अलग दृष्टिकोण मुखर होते हैं, तीन स्त्रियाँ तीन स्थानों पर। कुमुद, मालती और कुमुद की माँ। दूसरी कहानी में ललिता जहाँ इतनी सशक्त और आत्मनिर्भर है, वहीं एक क्षण की कमजोरी उसके जीवन को उलट पुलट करके देख देती है, लेकिन दोनों ही हार कहाँ मानती हैं? कुछ एक हिस्से जो इतने त्रासद दुखद बन पड़ते हैं, उन्हें वैसे शिवानी ही लिख सकती हैं।

Made an attempt to read Hindi literature after a long time and wasn't disappointed. The narration was gripping and breezy. The narrator's description of the day to day mores of middle class households is relatable at large though the gaze with which she describes the society is that of a particular social group. Also, it's more of a short story, rather than a novella.

My first book by the author and I'm in love with her writing style. After reading something by the author, I finally understood why readers are crazily in love with her books. I'm dieing to explore more of her titles.
The author is the magical wizz of writing. Her writing style was so lovely and vivid that it instantly captures you.
I happily insanely lovingly recommend it.

A story of a young girl looking for job prospects who goes through a sad experience. She is forced to leave the job and return in the end.

A 3.5 for me. Very Jane Eyre-ish and atmospheric, but I thought the author spent a lot of time dwelling on certain characters' circumstances, and not enough on others who had a direct bearing on the story. I really enjoyed the writing though and definitely want to read more of Shivani.
