Colonial Marines have taken possession of an "abandoned" alien spacecraft-only to discover its owner is still onboard! Instead of heading to Earth as expected, the humans end up on LV-223 (the planet where the events in the film Prometheus took place). There they must contend with hostile alien life forms, as well as the mysterious "Engineers" who are determined to wipe out not just them, but possibly all of humanity! This is the second chapter in the Life and Death story cycle-the follow-up to 2015's epic Fire and Stone crossover event. Before this tale is complete, the story lines of Predator, Prometheus, Aliens, and Aliens vs. Predator will all converge!
Maybe because this is the second volume in the Life and Death series that I wasn't able to fully appreciate the story. I've watched the 1986 movie Aliens and I can't help myself from comparing this graphic novel to that. The only similarity I could point out is how the aliens look alike, but the movie was beyond petrifying than this.
Thanks to Dark Horse Books and Random House for the reading copy provided.
Much better art and story in this volume. After the events of our last volume, the Engineer wakes up and takes his ship back. He sets course back to the planet from Fire and Stone and we meet up with who's still left from those books. Now they must retake the ship to escape the planet.
Received an advanced copy from Dark Horse and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
This entry into the four part series is the story that continues from Predator: Life and Death. Captain Paget and crew as well as the leftovers on Tartarus finally meet, when the Engineer is awakened onboard the xenos ship that the group managed to get off the planet they were on and the ship makes its way back to Tartarus. The group of refugees on Tartarus have been fighting the Alien threat for awhile and the Colonial Maries, with their newly found comrade, the Predator named Ahab arrive to deal damage as well. The Engineer awakes another of his kind and gathers a pair of casks of the black organic goo they use to terraform planets. Add to this the fact that the Aliens attack as the groups combine and you have a rip-roaring story here. Lots of ups and downs in this one too and it answers the question I had at the start: what happens when a Predator and Engineer cross paths. It's a war, to say the least. Really great story here. As I have mentioned before, this takes place about forty three years after the events of the Aliens movie. This one was fun as well. The art could have been a little better but it was good.
I....am sure I've read this before but my goodreads isn't showing it...I must not have acknowledged it? Or perhaps one of these movies is EXACTLY this plot? The whole thing is deja vu, whether I, myself, have actually read this or not - it is basically the exact story and set up of...all of the Alien franchise. Group of marines, all different types of people, stranded ; one is scared, one is cocky, one is mean, one gets killed right away. It's Alien, Aliens, Prometheus...the works. I spent a lot of this read scratching my head and wondering if a) I had read literally this book before b)I knew any of the characters from the movie c) if it connected to any of the movies at all....I still don't know. It reads as a primary script OR a really recent piece of fan fic that is basically Alien Covenant, I want to say? Yes, I think it is closest in plot to Alien Covenant...minus the evil robot plot line and WITH a predator. You will like this book if you want to watch what feels like HALF of one of these movies and don't have access to any of them.
I assumed Part 2 of Life and Death would focus more on the Engineers, and it did, but it also brought the Aliens into story. The team ends up on the planet from Fire and Stone, so we get to see the human characters that got stuck on the planet as well as the "friendly" Predator Ahab.
It's similar to the Part 1, but rather than fighting Predators the Colonial Marines are battling Aliens and Engineers, and have a Predator to help out. The art is good, and the story is moving along nicely, and I'm curious to see what happens next.
This second volume of Dan Abnett's Life and Death four-part series picks up right where the first volume left off. AN Engineer is awakening and there will be hell to pay. This is an excellent and exciting graphic novel and compels one to get to the third volume ASAP.
While Paget’s ship is escorting the Engineer ship back to base (and the captain is typing up a mission report to fill in anyone who is reading this but didn’t read Predator: Life and Death), the Engineer wakes up. The marines try to communicate with him peacefully but he just straight up grabs the closest person and crushes his skull with his bare hands. He then changes course, and Paget has her ship pursue.
In the second issue, we find out where the Engineer ship was heading, as it lands on LV-223! Most of the marines seem to have survived the trip by hiding from the Engineer aboard the ship, and their arrival is observed by two of the survivors of Fire and Stone! They’re understandably horrified by the arrival of another Engineer, considering everything they’ve been through, but when the marines are attacked by Xenomorphs they leap to their aid!
Great to see some of the characters from this crossover teaming up with the survivors from the previous crossover. Double crossover, yo! Another straightforward arc with great action, especially the human-aligned Predator fighting one of the Engineers. Loved that fight.
The cliffhanger here sees one of the Engineers board the ship and take off with only the advance team aboard, leaving the bulk of the survivors to think they’ve been abandoned while the Xenomorphs start to close in.
It's too short of a book for me to give it a 1 star. But I disliked it. Well, more that I was expecting so much more. There's not much in it, but sure, it's part of a bigger story. In the end, I know that what just killed it was that after the huge disappointment of Alien Covenant (the movie), I just wanted more of the Prometheus lore, but this gave me close to nothing. At least nothing new. Same tropes, same scenes even! ahhhh! Garbage.
Edit 06102020: Dropping it to a 1 star. Maybe the rest of the stories improve it, but this first one is so boring and predictable that made me gave up. Shame.
Enjoyed this. The characters from Predator: Life and Death escape the planet LV-797 and end up on LV- 223 (planet from Prometheus).
Here they meet up with the characters from Predator: Fire and Stone. Humans and Ahab the Predator fight against aliens, Engineers and the black goo mutated planet.
Prometheus and Alien: Covenant the films have not answered many questions but this book does have one key idea which could illuminate the Engineers motivations.
If the Engineers made mankind or not, maybe they are trying to protect us from the black goo / accelerant? Maybe the Engineer and his kind are frightened of what a child race (mankind) might do if we get our hands on it?
Abnett is doing great work here. Can't wait for the next part!
