The name and fame of Unni has rocketed skyward of late in Kerala. While he did write short stories quite frequently earlier, three of his screenplays made a big splash in mainstream cinema thereby making him visible to a much more wider audience. This book had been on my shelf for a long time now and while I had earlier read the much talked about and haunting Leela, I had not touched the others. Every book and its reader has a time and only then do the two find each other and for me and this book that time was now. The best description of these stories are captured in the foreword : ’These are not done in the regular fashion and they do not move along the beaten paths’. As a reader I enjoyed them, some more than others and yet they were almost all of them worth a read.

Unni’s stories cover a lot of different terrains which are wildly different from one another. My favorites among the lot were :

• Kaalinadakam (The kaali drama)
• Ozhivudivasathe Kali (The game we played on a holiday)
• Mudrarakshasam (Translation effort failed here – I could not translate this word)
• Manushyalayachandrika (Roughly – The moonlight that shone down on the home of man)
• Kottayam 17
• Thodinappuram Parambinappuram (What lies beyond the stream and the plot of land)


Like a deft storyteller, more than characters themselves Unni prefers to explore the cracks that form between their thoughts and how these affect their actions. We thus have Kuttiyappan who leaves no stones unturned in his search for the ultimate sexual fetish in the story Leela while the elderly couple of Kottayam 17 adopt a new member into the family after a lot of trepidation and in a moment of pathos. In Thodinappuram Parambinappuram , a grandmother and her grandchild explore the world and its wonders while the narrator of Ka keeps a wary eye pointed at the sky to see if there are crows around. They are representatives of the society we live in and speak the language that we hear around us in all its rawness and beauty.

There was a freshness to these stories that made reading them a delightful experience. There is much more to Unni.R than the story that brought him all the accolades.

ഉണ്ണി ആറിന്റെ എഴുത്തിനൊട് ആദ്യം മുതലേ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക താല്പ്പര്യം ഉള്ളതാണെങ്കിലൂം , അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തകങ്ങളൊന്നും തന്നെ പൂർണമായി വായിചിട്ടില്ല. അങ്ങനെ വെറുതെയിരിക്കുന്ന സമയത്താണ് വായിക്കാനുള്ള ആഗ്രഹം വീണ്ടും തോന്നിയത്. അങ്ങനെ ഉണ്ണി ആറിന്റെ ''കഥകൾ'' വാങ്ങി വായിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ലീല , കോട്ടയം 17 , ഒഴിവുദിവസത്തെ കളി തുടങ്ങിയ 26 കഥകളാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഉള്ളത്. വളരെ ലളിതമായ രീതിയിൽ ശക്തമായ രാഷ്ട്രീയം സംസാരിക്കുന്ന കഥകളാണ് ഓരോന്നും. ഓരോ കഥയിലും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ രാഷ്ട്രിയമാണ് പറഞ്ഞു വക്കുന്നത്. ഒട്ടുമിക്ക എല്ലാ കഥകളും നടക്കുന്നത് കോട്ടയത്തും ചുറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലുമായാണ്. ലീല എന്ന ചിത്രം കണ്ടതിനുശേഷമാണ് ലീല വായിക്കുന്നത്. എന്തുകൊണ്ടെന്ന് അറിയില്ല ലീല പൂർണമായി മനസിലായത് വായിച്ചതിനു ശേഷമാണ്. സിനിമയേക്കാൾ ഏറെ ഈ രചനയെ ഇഷ്ടപെട്ടുപോയി. കോട്ടയം 17 വായിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം മുതൽ കുഞ്ഞ് ആയിരുന്നു കുറച്ചു ദിവസം മനസ്സിൽ നിന്നിരുന്നത്. അങ്ങനെ ഇമ്മാനുവേലും , ലേവിയുടെ വിധവയും , ശിവരാമനും , പൂച്ചയും , രാധാമണിയും അത്ര പെട്ടെന്ന് മനസ്സിൽ നിന്ന് വിട്ടു പോവാത്ത ചില കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളാണ്. വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും വായിക്കാനും ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കാനും തോന്നിപ്പിക്കുന്നവയാണ് ഓരോ കഥകളും. ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ പിറകിൽ , എം. കൃഷ്ണൻനായർ ഉണ്ണി ആറിന്റെ കൃതികളെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്ന ഒരു വാചകമുണ്ട് അത് തന്നെ ഇവിടെയും കുറിക്കുന്നു.

ഒരുപാട് ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കഥകൾ. ഓരോന്നും ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ശൈലിയിൽ വിവിധ സാമൂഹിക പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെ വിവരിക്കുന്നവയാണ്. പല ചോദ്യങ്ങളും നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സിൽ രൂപപ്പെടാം. ചിലതിനു ഉത്തരം കിട്ടാതെ നമ്മൾ അസ്വസ്ഥരായേക്കാം, ചിലതിനു ഉത്തരം കിട്ടിയിട്ടും! ഓരോ കഥയും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു അനുഭവമാണ് തരുന്നത്. അനുബന്ധത്തിൽ പറയുന്നതുപോലെ, മുന്മാതൃകകൾ ഇല്ലാത്ത, മുൻപ് കേൾക്കാത്ത ശൈലിയിൽ ഉള്ള കഥകൾ. ഓരോ കഥകൾ വായിച്ചു കഴിയുമ്പോഴും അതേക്കുറിച്ചു നമ്മുക്ക് ഒരുപാടു ചിന്തിക്കാനുണ്ടാകും. കഥാകൃത്ത്‌ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചതാണോ നമ്മുടെ നിഗമനവും? ആ നിഗമനം ശെരിയോ അതോ തെറ്റോ? തെറ്റാണെങ്കിൽ എന്തുകൊണ്ട് അങ്ങനെ സംഭവിക്കുന്നു? എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ഇപ്പോഴും സംഭവിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു? ഈ വരികൾക്കിടയിൽ വേറെ എന്തെങ്കിലും അർഥം ഒളിച്ചിരുപ്പുണ്ടോ? ഇത് വെറുതെ വായിച്ചു പോകാനുള്ള കഥകൾ അല്ല. പച്ചയായ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ചിന്തകളും, പ്രവൃത്തികളും, പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും, ജീവിതവും എടുത്തുപറയുന്നു കഥകൾ!

ലീല:- കഥ ലീലയുടേതാണെങ്കിലും, അസാധാരണമായ സ്വഭാവങ്ങളുള്ള കുട്ടിയപ്പൻ ആണ് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഒരു തെറ്റും ചെയ്യാത്ത ലീലയുടെ മരണം ഒരുപക്ഷെ ചിലരുടെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടിൽ, അവൾക്കു ആ ജീവിതത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള മോചനമായിരിക്കാം.

ബാദുഷ എന്ന കാൽനടക്കാരൻ:- ഒരുപാടു നടക്കാൻ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരാൾ. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പേരും വേഷവും മാത്രം കാരണമാക്കികൊണ്ടു അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സാധാരണക്കാരൻ.

മൂന്നു യാത്രക്കാർ:- മരിയയെ തേടി ഈശോ ആ തീവണ്ടിയിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ഒത്തിരിനേരമായോ എന്ന മരിയയുടെ നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ ചോദ്യത്തിന് മറുപടി, ആ അമ്മയുടെ അടക്കാനാവാത്ത നെഞ്ചിടിപ്പായിരുന്നു.

ഒഴിവുദിവസത്തെ കളി:- സ്വീകാര്യതയാണ് ഒരു പക്ഷെ ഒരു മാറ്റത്തിനുള്ള ആദ്യപടി. അത് തൊഴിൽ ആവാം. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ജാതിയോ, ഭാഷയോ എന്തുമാവാം. വ്യതാസങ്ങൾ ഒരുമയോടെ സ്വീകരിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ അവിടെ വിജയം ഉണ്ടാവും, എല്ലാവർക്കും.

പ്രാണിലോകം:- ആ വീട് അവരുടേതുംകൂടിയല്ലേ?

സഹയാത്ര:- "ചിരിക്കാതിരുന്നാൽ ഭയങ്കര വൃത്തികേടായിരിക്കും. -ചിരിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്ന സമയത്തു ഞങ്ങൾ വരാം!"

അത്:- ഉപേക്ഷിക്കാൻ ആർക്കും കഴിയും. അത് മൃഗത്തെയാണെങ്കിലും മനുഷ്യനെ ആണെങ്കിലും. ഒന്ന് ചേർത്തുപിടിക്കാൻ, ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കാൻ, അംഗീകരിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നവർ ആരെങ്കിലും ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ, എന്ന് ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഓരോ നിമിഷവും ചിലർ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ടാവും.

There are some very good stories some not so good but I loved every one of it.After reading Leela i Knew I have to read everything written by Unni R.

The people in all this stories talk walk and think like the people we see everyday there problems are not new either.but we know they are real sometimes they are us.I loved most of stories,but could identify especially with the story of the man who wants to hoot when he see things he don't like.

Unni R is definitely one of the best writers of our generation in malayalam. Though I did not enjoy all the stories, there were some that had a profound effect on me -bhoothavishtan,leela,kottayam 17 namely. I think this is a must read for people interested in malayalam short stories.

'കഥകൾ' ഞാൻ വായിച്ചു. ഓരോ കഥക്കും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരനുഭവം തന്നെ സമ്മതിക്കാതെ വയ്യ. ഞാൻ ഒരു സഞ്ചാരിയും രാത്രിയിൽ കുറെ നേരം ഒപ്പം യാത്ര ചെയ്ത ശേഷം തീർത്തും അപരിചിതമായ ഒരു വഴിയിൽ വണ്ടി നിർത്തിയ ശേഷം വണ്ടിയിലെ ഡ്രൈവർ പെട്ടെന്നു എന്നോട് പറയുന്നു ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് നടന്നോളു എന്ന്.

മേൽപറഞ്ഞ അവസ്ഥയിൽ അടങ്ങിയ ഒരു ത്രില്ലും ഭയവുമാണ് ആണ് ഓരോ കഥയിലൂടെയും ഞാൻ അനുഭവിച്ചത്‌. വളരെ നന്നായിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്ന് പറയുന്നതിനേക്കാൾ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരനുഭവ യാത്ര എന്ന് പറയുവാനാണ് എനിക്കിഷ്ടം.

ഒഴിവുദിവസത്തെ കളിയും ലീലയും (രഞ്ജിത് പിന്നീട് സിനിമ ആക്കിയത്) അടക്കം ഇരുപത്തിയഞ്ചിൽപരം കഥകൾ ഉണ്ട് ആർ ഉണ്ണിയുടെ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ. പച്ചയായ തുറന്നെഴുത്ത് രസകരമെങ്കിലും (ചിലർക്ക് ചിലതൊക്കെ അരോചകമായി തോന്നിയേക്കാം), കഥകളിലെ സ്ഥായിയായ ഭാവം സമകാലികസമൂഹത്തിൽ പലരീതിയിൽ ഒറ്റപെട്ടുപോകുന്നവരുടെ നിസ്സഹായതയോ ആത്മസംഘർഷമോ വേദനയോ ഒക്കെത്തന്നെയാണ്. പേരുകൾ മറന്നുപോയേക്കാമെങ്കിലും, വായിച്ചുകഴിയുമ്പോൾ അവർ ബാക്കിയാക്കിപ്പോകുന്ന വൈകാരികാനുഭവം ഏറെകാലം നിങ്ങളെ വേട്ടയാടും എന്ന കാര്യം ഉറപ്പാണ്.

Nice collection of stories by Unni.R
Hoping to explore more of his works in 2024.
Enjoyed reading each one of the short story.
Its a collection of 26 stories including the one that was made into a movie ('Leela').
Also hoping that some of these are also land up as plots for his future movies.

Kottayam 17had had me added to the list of the fans of Unni R.

This one is another collection of short stories by the author, to the despair of the fan in me, wasn't impressive enough. It had contained all the stories in Kottayam 17 along with a few more. But, most of these additions, i found were not as striking as the ones in Kottayam 17.

Some like "Leela", "Moonnu Yathrakkar", "Ananda Maargam" are interesting to some extend.

Wanted to read Leela before the movie comes out. Just bought the book Kottayam 17 today and finished reading Leela. I like it. Its strange, I feel there's more to it beyond the lines. I don't know. But I like it.
