This is a great handbook for students that are about to start university. It contains chapters on all the essential stuff: researching, writing, grammar, punctuation, plagiarism, and more. The content is concise and easy to read.

The 100 pages on the Harvard, APA, MLA, and CMS documentation styles is a bit unnecessary. There's no point learning all four of them because most students will only need to master one or two during their degree. Regardless, it's a good reference if it's needed at some point.

Overall, it was a good read and I'd definitely recommend it to late high school/early university students.

This books serves as a basic reference when no other is available, but falls short. Most egregious is its failure to explain the purpose of underlining (typing) and italics. Students using this guide easily get the impression when that one style sheet (MLA) would have them underline book titles, while another (Chicago) would have them italicized. This difference does not exist: book titles are italicized in all academic style sheets (newspapers put them in quote marks). Underlining tells the typesetter to use italic type. Underlining is an archaic convention no longer necessary in the age of word processors.

Extremely useful resource for ALL students, or anyone really, looking to reference essays and reports appropriately. THE LITTLE PENGUIN HANDBOOK provides a well-presented and detailed account of common referencing styles including Harvard and APA systems. It is pocket sized, lightweight and spiral-bound for easy use and travel.

I highly recommend.
