Imp World #13

Northern Lights

Rate this book
Raphael is an Angel of Order. . . sort of. His affinity for chaos makes him the perfect choice to investigate the trespass in Alaska of supernatural creatures not seen in eons. But the locals in Juneau have been keeping a secret for thousands of years –the disgraceful offspring of an angel and a demon. Raphael should execute her on the spot, or at the very least throw her into Hel with the rest of her kind, but Raphael has never been one to follow the rules.

Ahia has lived for thousands of years with the Alaskan natives and werewolves, told that she’s a Nephilim and must stay hidden lest the angels find and kill her. But when interdimensional rifts begin opening up throughout Alaska, swallowing humans and spitting out dangerous monsters, the angels are the only beings who can help.

Of course the angel they send is smoking hot, and demands she assist him in closing the rifts. Far from the stern, enforcer of rules, this angel is fun and flirty, tempting Ahia to drag this project out far longer than she should.

But when one of the rifts takes the local Alpha as well as a group of humans, the situation becomes urgent. Ahia will need to risk everything - her life, her heart, and all she's believed true to bring them home, because whatever the angels might call her, she won’t abandon those who trust her to keep them safe.

Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.

She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.

Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.

Raphael won my heart the very first time he propositioned Sam in front of his brother at a Ruling Council meeting and my love for him has only grown since then. Unlike the angels of Aaru, I'd pick his Choir over any of the others in a heartbeat - even the Fifth. (Sorry, Sam!)

Rafi is my drug of choice and a contender for the top spot in my book boyfriend harem so you could say I had high expectations for this book. You know, sky high...

What I learned of him here only served to fuel my love for the odd angel out; the one that would rather spend an afternoon bowling with drop bear heads or doing free-falls from the mountain cliffs than improving his vibration patterns or closing dimensional rifts that keep sucking humans and werewolves into themselves - while spitting out booby-birds and other "lovely" creatures in exchange.

... And this is the angel that's sent to Alaska to do just that.

Fortunately, Alaska's got a well hidden secret called Ahia. So secret in fact, that she too is unaware of her true heritage.

Ahia and Raphael had great chemistry, partly because Raphael - unlike his big bro- takes so easily to sin... *Cough, angelic mile-high club, cough* Ahia... well, let's just say that she'll get along splendidly with Sam.
Oh, and let's not forget Rafi's vulnerable and caring side, hidden beneath the mask of the archangelic clown of Aaru...

There's also the small matter of the jealous werewolf ex lover and a gate guardian with a green eyed monster better befitting an Ancient in Hel...

Northern Lights is told from multiple point of views. While I'd rate Rafi's chapters perfection and Ahia's chapters quite good, I've never been a fan of werewolves. In fact, they're my least favorite supe - sorry, just a personal preference - which is why I'm detracting one star. Brent, the werewolf alpha might be a great guy, and he does get his own budding romance in this novel, but hey, I read this book for the winged, not the fanged stud. (Nothing can compete with peacock wings, ya know;-))

Northern Lights is set in the time before the final events in Exodus and it would seem that Rafi kept a big secret as he fell. (Naughty boy!)

Ahia's and Rafi's romance is still only in the beginning stages and I'm expecting it to progress quite a lot in the next few books. Well, perhaps not in Gabe's book, but certainly in Queen of the Damned this summer. I for one can't wait for her to meet Sam and see what the now fallen angels think of this new addition Sam's diverse family. Will they act like Nisroc I wonder, or will they want her wings for another reason entirely... Oh, and on a related note: I'd love to meet her parents. (As well as Sam's of course!) Now is as good a time as any to come forward, right? Let he who is without sin... etc.

On June 26 2017 I read my first Debra Dunbar book. A book that I had had since May, but hadn’t tried until that date. I mention that specific fact because, since that date, I’ve now completed 11 books by Dunbar, all of them within the Imp World series, though only 8 of them are in the main Imp series (the others are spin-offs). I wasn’t really going to read the spin-offs but impulsively tried the first and now, and noted or instantly seen by those who do math quickly, I’ve read 3 spin-off books. All three involving different main characters – all side characters in the main Imp series.

I’ve kind of edged into each of these books. Somewhat reluctant to try them, for various reasons. And this specific book here I was even more reluctant to read both because I wasn’t really certain how it corresponded to the three Northern Wolves short stories (one of the reviews made mention of Northern Lights in a way that implied that the Northern Wolves short stories were something of a continuation; now that I’ve read Northern Lights and seen descriptions of the short stories, I know how they are connected – just as the non-main Imp books in Imp World are spin-offs of the Imp series, Northern Wolves involves stories spin-off Northern Lights). Oh, and reluctant to read because the spin-off I read immediately before this one kind of annoyed me more than I’d expected.

As mentioned, I’ve read 11 books by Dunbar, ratings are all over the place, though the important point is that three of the books have had me click on all 5 possible stars on GoodReads. Two because I thought the books were roughly 4.75 star books, then the third, this book here, I thought was 5+. Yes, that’s right, my favorite book by Dunbar is this book here, a spin-off. And again it’s a book that is better read after reading the Imp series – though here I’d say to read books 1-7, then read this book, then read book 8 (Exodus). For . . . reasons. This book is, by published date, published later in time than Exodus, but chronologically, the story takes place before Exodus.

So, that’s a lot of words, none of which actually say anything about this specific book.

There are several point of views in this book, and, I believe for the first time for this author, there are more than one coupling up going on in this book. To start off with, we have Raphael who has appeared in the main Imp series, and is brother to one of the main characters in that series – Gregory (aka Michael, there’s a complicated reason why Archangel also has the name Gregory – simplified – Sam knew him as ‘Gregory’ because he was the head of the ‘Gregori’ (the angels who watch over the earth; I did say I was doing simplified), and didn’t otherwise know his name, only later learning that his name is actually Michael (or, as he is sometimes called, Micha). Gregory/Michael makes a very brief appearance in this book. I assume the guardian angel for the gate in Alaska also made an appearance, and that some of the wolves might have appeared as well in the main Imp book that had Sam and Gregory in Alaska, but I didn’t recognize the guardian angel nor any of the wolves – therefore I can say that Raphael is the only ‘important’ character of note who appears both in multiple Imp books and in this book here.

Raphael is not the first main point of view, though. Started with him because he’s also in the Imp series. The first POV in the book is . . . well, now that I think about it there might have been a prologue or something, well, another point of view in this book is Ahia. Just like another side-book, Ahia has live a long time ‘knowing’ that she’s a Nephilim (the off-spring of Angel/human mating, and the ‘first’, or ‘parents of’ werewolves’). Unlike Jaq, the Nephilim in No Man’s Land, Ahia gives the impression that she’s been around for several thousand years – I believe that there’s even a mention of an exact date, 5 or more thousands of years maybe, but a really long time.

As I think I mentioned, this book also pulls in another coupling. That’d be Brent, the werewolf alpha of the pack Ahia mostly lives with in Alaska (she does move around within Alaska), and Kennedy, a trauma surgeon and human. Both of them have their POV’s appear in this book, and a certain romance blooms, though their story is told more in the spin-off short story Juneau to Kenai (not that I’ve read that short story).

To continue down that specific path of revealing characters in short stories – Sabrina (werewolf) and Karl (werebear) star in the second Northern Wolves short story, and both are very minor characters in ‘Northern Lights’. And I do not recognize the characters listed for the third Northern Wolves short story.

Right, so. Rifts are opening up in Alaska (and all over the world, see previous Imp books for what’s going on – why the rifts are opening I mean), and two things are occurring because of that – ‘monsters’ are falling out of the rifts, and humans (and others) are getting sucked through the rifts. Ahia and the wolves have been running around killing the monsters that have come through, or trying to, but they can’t close the rifts. Ahia, even though she knows it might mean her instant death (Angels kill Nephilim on sight), she asks for help . . . from an Angel (well, okay, sometimes the Angels don’t kill on sight). The Angel that guards the gate in Alaska to Hel isn’t powerful enough to close the rifts so he asks for someone more powerful for help. That’s where Raphael comes in. He can’t see the rifts, but he can close them – with the help of someone like a demon to see the rifts.

Complications ensue immediately after Raphael arrives. He assumes that if the guardian angel knows of the rifts then he has to have a demon around to see them. A demon he is protecting. Raphael intends to use said demon, temporary, to help locate rifts. Which leads him to finding Ahia. Whereupon . . . well, spoiler-y stuff. Right, without getting into spoiler-y stuff, Ahia and Raphael then proceed to go around killing monsters and closing rifts.

Meanwhile, some people get sucked into and through a rift. Including Brent and Kennedy. And they wander around on the world they landed on. Having their own POV’s shown and stuff.

For many reasons I really enjoyed and loved this story. And really want to see more of Ahia. It’s possible that I might, since this book is from 2017, but the spin-off short stories don’t star her, and none of the later Imp books (which don’t actually have descriptions yet) mention her.

Oh, and there’s stuff like sex that occurs.

I don't think I've ever given a Debra Dunbar book such a low rating, but this book was pretty bad. Her Imp books with Sam are tightly plotted, have few if any typos, have many characters with conflicting agendas, have plenty of action, Sam herself is a fascinating character, and Gregory is amazingly complex as a six billion year old being should be.

In Northern Lights we have a fairly boring, one dimensional heroine, Ahia. She thought she was a nephilium, but instead turns out to be a angel of chaos - the only one we know of other than Sam. Ahia kills things that threaten people, otherwise she works in a gift shop. The hero is the newly boring Raphael. I don't know what happens when Ms. Dunbar writes these spin-off books, but she sucks the life out of the existing characters (think Dar's book). Raphael was a great character in the Imp books. He is three billion years old and was made by the Creator itself. You'd think he'd be more interesting, but he kills a few things and thinks about Ahia all the time. Time which should have been put into plot and character development.

Ms. Dunbar really put the sappy on with a trowel, which is weird since in the Imp books she has Sam and Gregory in love, but she doesn't beat you over the head with it. She has written some pretty edgy stuff like the book about the vampire who had been tortured and left to die. I couldn't even read the first chapter and the rest of the book was pretty gritty. Northern Lights is pure fluff and not good fluff. Ms. Dunbar is good at writing in different styles, but I'm sorry she chooses mindless, over-the-top, mushiness rather than the tight character building she puts into the Imp books. Also, what was with all the typos?

I mean where to start? Ahia is a 5000 year old angel but everyone treats her like a child. Maybe it’s because the author refers to her as being “crazy” no less than 50 times?

I’ve never seen sexual tension displayed so often at such in appropriate time. Constantly ahia claims that Brent is her ‘best friend’ but when he goes missing in another dimension she can’t help but give blow jobs and wish her nipples were being sucked. Like come on girl, there is actual work to be done here… like saving your best friend.

So much didn’t make sense and I’d rate the spice as a 1 star. Angels been around for a few billion years but can’t last more than 6 pumps it seems.

As an avid fan of all the books in Dunbar's Imp Series, I never thought I would rate her books so low. Usually, Debra Dunbar writes witty but suspenseful books. Not in this case, however.
The beginning was promising, especially Ahia's point of view. For the first two chapters or so, her POV includes some of the Imp Series' trademark humor, but delicately managed, without Ahia becoming clone of Sam.
It all went downhill when Ahia, the main heroine, met Raphael, the main hero. What seemed like a promising book turned into complete nonsense; right off the bat, they called each other "Pretty boy," and "Hot-stuff," dedicated three quarters of all their thoughts to how hot the other one was, and fantasized about when they could finally have sex. Calling them hormonal teenagers would be an insult to hormonal teenagers.
The book felt very rushed. There was an overabundance of telling instead of than showing, which wasn't exactly pleasant to read through. Furthermore, Ahia acted and thought like a teen rather than the 5,000 year old being the author told us she was. Frankly, the two factors derailed whatever empathy I was ready to develop for the main character.
All in all, I would not recommend this novel. Save your money for a more worthwhile book.

85 points/100 (4.5/5 stars)

Raphael is being sent to Alaska to close some rifts and keep him out of trouble. Yet, he finds trouble anyway, his kind of trouble. Ahia is a nephilim that has been hiding out with the werewolves for the last couple centuries, and before that, the humans. What secrets can she be hiding?

I had fun with this one. I love Rafi, he is the best Angel of Order. Compared to the last few side novels, I was surprised how much story this one actually had, and how much I cared about the story.

This is a standalone novel in the Imp world. It doesn't really necessarily have to be read to understand the rest of the Imp series, it is just a fun side diversion. While the events of this novel will almost certainly show up in the rest of the series, you won't really need to read this to understand what is going on there. You should read this to have fun with Raphael, not because you think you'll miss any story.

The plot of this side novel is surprisingly active, compared to the previous side novels. I really liked it. This book takes place during the events of Kingdom of Lies, when all the rifts were opening up dumping creatures everywhere. I had so much fun with Rafi and Ahia dealing with the creatures that came through the rifts. Dunbar made me care about what these characters were doing, even though it was just a side diversion.

Plus, the characters are good. I really liked Ahia, and I had already liked Raphael before this. These two are absolutely perfect for each other. They complement each other in the best ways. They're so much fun together. I honestly cannot wait for Ahia's coming out party. That will be a blast.

There are also two other perspectives in this book, which kind of annoyed me a bit, though I understand why they were added initially. There is the perspective from Ahia's alpha, and some random woman, when the alpha and the woman, and some other humans get cut off from the rest of them all. I understand the perspective need initially. This romance between them seems so far out of left field in the middle of a crisis. Then, their story isn't even completed, you have to read Juneau to Kenai to get the rest of the story. Luckily, that novella was included with my copy of Northern Lights.

I enjoyed reading this, mostly because I love Raphael, and I love when he acts like an imp.

Norther Lights - An Imp World Novel

Northern Lights
What an amazing love story. Of course there was a whole lot more going on, besides two angels falling in love and enjoying each other’s company 😉. Raphael and Ahia are introduced, when angel Raphael was sent to help Ahia, in Alaska, to shut down rifts. Rifts that we’re opening all over the place, letting all sorts of monsters loose, on the humans. Ahia had lived thousands of years, believing she was a Nephilim. She had wings and could fly, but, no other angel like powers. She had been befriended by a werewolf pack, years and years ago and had stayed friends and helped protect them too.
Sadly one of those rifts, tore open in the novelty shop, where Ahia worked. There were customers and workers in the shop, when it exploded. Eight people were sucked out and dumped into another world. A world of an unfriendly environment and dangers inhabitants. It was now up to Raphael and Ahia to try and bring them back alive.
It is a fun story, with some sexual situations, so, if, your not into that, you are warned.
I loved the whole story and getting to see Raphael finally find someone to love and she loving him back, was heavenly! 😊Another wonderful addition the Imp series, by Debra Dunbar.

A great addition to the Imp World !

In this Imp World companion novel we get a more in depth view of the barely Order, closest to Chaos, archangel, Raphael. With wild rifts appearing all over the place, belching monsters into the world and causing general mayhem, Gregory decides to send his little brother, Raphael, to Alaska when he receives a report from the gate guardian that a rift had opened alarmingly close to the gate. Closing rifts and battling monsters seems nominally more entertaining than dealing with politics and an impending war in Aaru, so Raphael heads out to deal with the situation. Little does he know that the remote Alaskan wilderness has been hiding secrets, big secrets. Once he arrives, Raphael discovers a young angel of chaos, born a mere five thousand years before, and hidden with the local humans and werewolves. Raphael is beside himself with joy when he discovers that the angel, Ahia, relates to him like no one else ever has. But there are still rifts to close and monsters to battle. Raphael has to overcome his own insecurities about being the weakest archangel in order to help Ahia save some humans and her ex lover before he can contemplate a future with his very own angel of chaos.

So this was quick into the romance and then 50% in there was a change up and rift problems that needed to solved with the alpha. Now we are getting his point of view also and a solidifying of Ahia and Raphael's relationship. I didn't mind this change up and Brent and his plight kept my interest. At the end of the book (maybe only if you preordered which I did) is the novella that continues Brent's story.

I really loved Raphael and Ahia coming together. They both had their insecurities. This was mainly a romance with a little monster bashing in between until the above shift. Then it gets on the UF train. I always find Dunbars plots to move at differing speeds than the normal books and the plot either takes off and switches up or doesn't have a cohesive direction, at least that you can see, until well into the book. This has never been an issue as the character catch you and you want to know more. I laughed quite a bit and their antics and found the different POV nice. They meshed really well right off the bat as neither is much of the normal angel. This is a fun addition to the Imp world and definitely worth the read. Sam can be more fun sometimes but this definitely had plenty of laughs too. I liked it slightly better than Dar's story.

update while reading------------------
OK, I'm really liking this. Definitely keeping my attention. I don't know why he makes any deal with the Gate guardian though.

Entertaining

This was a decent book. I liked it for the most part but there were a few parts that bothered me during the plot. Spoiler alert!

I felt like there were scenes that were really well described like when they're flying around but then others were severely lacking. Like the beginning when she goes after the hydra and she says "I got my butt kicked. It hurt." And that's it. Come on, you can put a little more effort in than that. I also felt the end was a bit abrupt and Ahia could have been a bit less whiny. Your best friends new girlfriend is being more useful and she's missing a leg; your an angel. I also didn't like how the author left a lot of unanswered questions like what is gonna happen when Michael shows up? Are they ever going to tell the other angels about Ahia? Is everything good now all of a sudden? But I'm sure I probably need to find the next book to maybe get those answers. At least I hope.

All in all, I think I will buy the next book. Eventually.

Wow!!

This is the first book I read by the author and first book of the imp world . This can be read as stand alone as there are not so many back references to spoil the story. Raphael is the most naughty of the archangel and he is sent to Alaska to close the rifts opening across the state. What he doesn't expect is to meet an angel who thinks she is just half Angel. Ahia is an amazing female lead who is five thousand years old quite young compared to billions of years old archangel. She is funny, witty, loyal, helpful, brave and a non complaining female character. I loved the exchange between her and Rafi and her and Brent. It was cute to watch them all talking without reservations.

The story has some survival adventure and fighting monsters. All in all quite an amazing story. Looking forward for the next one.

Raphael is just adorable. I love how an archangel can come across as adorable. He's been fun and playful in the Imp books proper, but I liked finally getting into his head. He's still fun and playful, but there's more depth to him. I loved him courting Ahia. They fit together very well. The action was fairly well paced through the book. I wasn't a fan of the two additional POVs we got, but it looks like Dunbar was prepping for another spin off series. And they weren't horrible POVs. I just didn't want any interruption from Raphael and Ahia. I liked Raphael standing up to Michael/Gregory. Overall, a wonderful side adventure from Az/Sam.

Debra Dunbar Wins Again!

Excellent Continuation! I'm so glad that I read this! Ravi is one of my favorite characters, and this does so much to understand him, Ahia, and I loved the plot that unfolds to tell the stories of the both of them. This is an excellent book in the series, one that really can stand on its own, but is a great credit to the Imp Series in general. If you're a fan, definitely read it. If not already into the series, start at the beginning with the (free) "A Demon Bound" . You will almost certainly love it and read the following books.

As Always, I Wish Happy Reads to All from the Unapologetic Book Junkie 😉 !

This book is Rafi’s side story. It starts off introducing you to Ahia who seems a lot like Sam. She’s a bit snarky and definitely a little crazy. It’s no wonder Rafi is attracted to her. The book takes about half way through to really get to the action. Once it gets going it’s a great story. I wish there would have been a little more action and a little less focus on what the 2 angels wanted to to do to each other. I would have loved to read more about the rifts and where they went to. But all in all it was a humorous read and I appreciate the fun loving approach to getting rid of inter dimensional creatures such as drop bears.

A little disappointed in this book I thought there be more conflict for Raphael when it came to his internal debates. I also felt like the characters kinda ended up getting together as far as our personalities. there were different viewpoints but the mannerisms and idioms we're the same exact wording making it hardly believable that these were different personalities. the relationship between the two main characters felt rushed and I felt that Raphael's personality seems unbelievable especially for someone sheltered from Humanity for an exceedingly long time.

Blown away!

I loved reading this side story. Raphael is my favorite of all the brothers, and this story doesn't disappoint! The bonus content from the preorder with Brent's story is very good also. I love seeing these glimpses into the other characters lives. Dunbar is always on my one click list! She is an amazing author and never lets you down!!

Cute story about Gregory's bro Rafi finding his own SO. The ending was rather abrupt but I guess so that's to spin-off into another series about the werewolves. I guess I'll read Brent's and Kennedy's story but I'm really not interested in moving off to the werewolves. I just want to continue reading about Sam's imp world.

Great, heart warming story

Shifters are cool but nothing tops an angel. Raphael and Ahia are terrific together. Brent and Kennedy are so funny in their first blush of love. Her love makes him finally believe in himself. Can't wait for mor pancake hi jinks.
