Devin Harnois has several published novels and he’d have more if he spent less time on Twitter and playing Dragon Age. Most of his books involve magic, monsters, and hope. They're also getting progressively more queer. He collects skull items and only a strong will prevents his apartment from being overrun by them.

In second grade he wrote his first story, a romance about two mice falling in love. He still has the original draft.

“Oh, Kel.” Roshan pressed their hands together. “You store up reasons to hate yourself, and I…” Roshan laughed, sad and sweet and surprised all at once. “I store up reasons to love you.”

idk, but any couple that gives me jegulus (james/regulus from the marauders fandom) vibes is a couple it seems i’ll eat up moments with 😋 i’ve said this before and i’ll say this again: hurt/comfort and found family are hands down the best tropes and i will love them. every. single. time. when they’re done well. and roshan always being there for kel when he needed it, always loving him in his darkest and brightest moments, always protecting him and yet letting him make his own decisions on the things that mattered? so lovely.

the hurt/comfort in this was immaculate. made me feel so much. roshan and kelas were just the most precious characters to ever exist 🥺💗 it seems i have a particular inclination towards characters who need love in their lives because they deserve so much (kelas), as well as sunshine characters who’ll do anything to give it to them (roshan). the enemies to lovers was done so well imo. like the way the mistrust slowly developed into tentative brushes into partnership, then to trust and friendship and dove into love? i loved it. ngl i thought the “love” came on way too fast after how their friendship happened but i ignored that because i adored every other aspect to this sm.

in the end: i loved how roshan brought kelas back to life with his smiles and cheerfulness and endless energy, and kelas came to be in his light and just burned around him. the way roshan reassured kelas he loved him lives rent free in my head 🥹 they’re both so dear to me.

Roshan groaned. “Oh fuck. I'll try. No guarantees.” He slowed his thrusts. “You feel so fucking good. And you're looking at me like... I'm the most important thing in the world.”
“You are.” A little flutter of fear went through Kelas at being so honest. “You look at me like that all the time.”
“Because you're amazing. Because I love you more than anything.” Roshan kissed him hard.
Kelas let himself believe it. “I'm truly blessed by the gods.”
Roshan lifted his head. “We both are.”

the hurt/comfort in this was just 🥺💗💓💘💖
Roshan was 🥺💗💓💘💖

“A warrior’s broken soul.
A vampire’s kind heart.”

Doesn’t that sound intriguing? I’m really glad I finally pulled the trigger and cracked this one open. The blurb is short and sweet but the story is so much more. Before I continue, please be aware: “Content warnings: Contains slavery, violence, body control, bottom shaming, misogyny, and rape mentioned in backstory.” This was a gruesome story and along with the listed warnings, there was necromancy which adds a whole other level to body control.

You’re still here?

If all those warnings didn’t send you running for the hills, pull up a chair and let’s get this party started.

Kelas Vartorvi was a warrior for his people until the Vampire’s took over his city and killed everyone they couldn’t use. Kelas was very proficient as a warrior which led to his capture, being turned into a werewolf (a Hound), and forced into slavery for the Master Vampire, Zoja. With Zoja forcing a blood bond, she is able to control Kelas’ body and he became her “sword.” He was forced to live as a dog, kill at her command, and be raped at her hands. For years he endured until he found a way to escape. He was on the run for months staying one step ahead of the trackers Zoja sent his way until he was outnumbered and poisoned. Just when he thinks it’s over and that he’ll be brought back and tortured, he’s saved by an unlikely hero.

Roshan is a rogue vampire that was abandoned by his sire shortly after being attacked and changed into a vampire. He embraces life and has built a family of friends around him. Roshan is light, sarcastic and caring. He is also a hell of a fighter, a mercenary, and is able to save Kelas from the attack.

Roshan being a vampire represents everything Kelas hates. He finally freed himself from Zoja and now owes Roshan a life debt as a payment for saving his life. Begrudgingly, Kelas agrees to stay with the group until he saves Roshan’s life. Kelas is like one of those abused and terrified animals you see at shelters. The ones that are heartbreakingly skittish and can’t bear to be touched. He was robbed of his pride, dignity, his name, consent, humanity, and choices on his physical actions. Slowly, Roshan earned his trust. Each day he showed Kelas that what you were didn’t determine who you were.” That he wasn’t a monster.

Their journey as mercenaries takes them all over the lands, bringing them closer together until one job dangles the carrot of revenge. They have an opportunity to come face to face with Zoja and Kelas is eager to follow this path through, knowing that she will always be looking for him. Getting to the point of revenge takes trust and great sacrifice for both Kelas and Roshan. They have parts to play and can’t show their hand too early. Each step the group took brought them closer to Zoja, the castle of Kelas’ enslavement, and the battle that would take place. Their time at the castle was tense, engaging and eventually very gruesome. There were a lot of moving pieces and the prior world building supported them well.

Roshan and Kelas are opposites that fit. Their love is beautiful and transparent in each interaction. Roshan slowly brought Kelas back to life. But, Kelas feels “broken.” He needs to face his demons. He needs to face the voices in his head that tell him he’s nothing but a worthless Hound.

“I’m a pet, an animal. Not a person. Not someone you love. I’m a creature you lust after, one you can make do whatever you want. I’m a toy.”

This wasn’t a case of insta-love. They were slow to realize their attraction and as their feelings grew, love bloomed bright. With Kelas’ past, trust had to be the foundation before anything else was added and the author did a great job of making that a realization. There wasn’t a lot of sex in the book but each time it took place held purpose. It furthered the believability of their connection and the trust built between them. They got their HEA but it wasn’t without hardship, heartbreak, and a need for healing.

Was it perfect? No. Did I have to suspend reality? Yes, but that is to be expected with a paranormal/ fantasy romance. The time period was a bit confusing and I still don’t know if it was a historical with its talk of coin, carriages, and horses or in modern time with the way each character spoke. It was contradictory and pulled me out of the story a few times. Also, this was very heavy in gods talk. There are rites, rituals, thanking ceremonies, prayers, alters, statues, etc… The gods are mentioned in the blurb and are everywhere throughout. I could have done without all that but it didn’t ruin the book for me. Another unique aspect of this story was the feel; It has a vintage werewolf and/or vampire feel which worked for the heavy elements present.

I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to fans of paranormal romance.

“Oh, Kel.” Roshan pressed their hands together. “You store up reasons to hate yourself, and I…” Roshan laughed, sad and sweet and surprised all at once. “I store up reasons to love you.”

Quite an enjoyable fantasy/action romance.

I really liked the character types and dynamics. Our MCs have quite opposite personalities: duty-bound Kelas and seemingly flippant Roshan, who both grow as characters over the course of the novel. The pace of the progression from dislike to reluctant trust to friends was good, but I felt the switch from that to romance happened too fast.

On the romantic front, I would've preferred to see more thought given to the abuse Kelas suffered at the hands of his previous vampire masters and the effect that it had on him and his potential relationship with Roshan, also a vampire. It's not completely brushed aside but I felt like we only get his thoughts about how they hadn't managed to ruin sex for him and, I don't know, it seems more complex to me than that.

That said, his struggle and anguish at being back in the place he was held captive, albeit no longer captive, was well-developed and I appreciated how we were also shown Roshan's difficulty with knowing how to best support Kelas. And support him he does, the conflict is completely external to their relationship and I liked how solid their bond was through it all.

A few other points I wasn't so sure about. I enjoyed the initial almost Witcher-like plot structure but IMO things got a bit scattered during the main plot element. The action conflict was well-written though. The rest of the cast was interesting though for a book this length they felt under-utilised.

Overall, there's a lot of good hurt/comfort in this, and I did really like the main characters, even though I think the pacing and structure could use some work it was a pretty decent read.

I’ll be honest, I picked up this book for two reasons:

1. It was $0.99
2. It had an interesting blurb

Verdict? I’m glad I did.

The world building was great(detailed without being bogged down), the characters were interesting and it didn’t have any contrived drama. Also, I love a villain I can hate sufficiently and this delivered.

I enjoyed it very very much and it reminded me why I fell in love with PNR initially.

❝you store up reasons to hate yourself, and i…❞ roshan laughed, sad and sweet and surprised all at once. ❝i store up reasons to love you.❞

undaunted wrecked me emotionally and i'm not mad about it.

✩ i love that devin harnois clearly told kelas's story with such love and care. meanwhile, roshan became an unlikely source of comfort and caring for kelas. these two men are giving off such strong hurt/comfort vibes, and i cannot 🥹

❝if i come after them, or if i attack you, you may have to kill me,❞ kelas said.
roshan rolled his eyes. ❝you’re such a fucking ray of sunshine, you know that?❞

✩ i would say more, buuuuuuuut- brb, gotta go obsessively read devin harnoris's back catalogue now!!

Nice world building in this paranormal romance

I've not read this author before but had this book recommended by another author who's work I love and I was pleasantly surprised.

There is some excellent world building and an interesting alternative to the traditional werewolf and vampire mythologies which worked well.

The romance took a while to get going but it worked very well as an enemy to lovers story which grew from tentative friendship into respect and then into love.

Bored out of my mind. The romance felt forced and Harlequinesque. The world building was inadequate. The story just didn't feel organic, more paint by the numbers. Moving on.

Pleasantly surprised.

I’m new to this author so wasn’t sure what to expect. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Kelas and Roshan.

I think the author did a very good job at portraying Kelas’ PSTD and how hard it is to struggle with.

I will be looking for more work from this author.

This was one of those books in which everyone is just so darned lovely you can't stand it. People make instant connections, earn trust in no time, love blooms easily, and EVERYONE lives happily ever after together. The writing was ok, though the dialogue didn't feel particularly natural, at times. But the pacing felt off and I didn't believe the relationships for a moment.

I really enjoyed this book. Slightly different take on your normal werewolf/vampire take. Both of our MC's have been changed without their consent. While Roshan had a rather easy life, easy in compared to Kelas, Kelas had nothing but torture & horror in his. 5 years basically a killing slave. The vampires that "own" the werewolf's treat them like animals & they are called hounds. It is a horrible life. But Kelas did not let it break him, totally, he is pretty bent but not completely broken. He learns that he can he can find friendship and love.

A lovely romantic fantasy

This was a wonderful story. It has a little bit of everything. Vampires, warewolves, magic, sassy warriors, and a great adventure. Roshan and Kelas go from (sort of) enemies, to friends, to lovers in a very natural way that feels right for the characters and the story. And if, like me, you get tired of broody vampires, Roshan is a happy go lucky vampire who is very easy to love.

Enjoyable!

Fall time is vampire werewolf time! (Ok, every season is that vampire werewolf season.) This was a great queer romance with a bound reluctant werewolf guarding a vampire he initially hates. They’re lovely characters and an overall neat story. Less blood play than I expected, but they’re traumatized lil guys so I understand.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Undaunted is a fun, quick, light read with hints at a greater world beyond what the story gives us. The characters are a bit simple and undeveloped, and the group of adventurers is a bit generic, but there are some unique and interesting ideas in this book — especially where vampires and werewolves are concerned — that make it stand out from the (forgive the pun) pack.

Vampires, in this world, have very little no resemblance to Stoker’s creation. While they are stronger at night, they’re not cursed to a life of darkness. They drink blood and use it to fuel their powers, but they seem more power-hungry than blood-thirsty. For Roshan, blood is more than just food, it’s a buzz and the sense of life and joy and magic. He can hypnotize and bind others to him with the blood bond, but he relies more on the inhuman strength and speed his vampire nature gives him. While werewolves do change into furry monsters, they aren’t insensate animals or crazy animal-men. They’re just as sane as any human, and Kelas is still Kelas even in his other form. He’s stronger and faster while he’s human, but not ridiculously so, and while he does monstrous things, he does them while under the command of a monstrous vampire, not because his werewolf nature takes over.

Under Devin's author info it says his books are getting progressively more queer...I hope to the FSM and all that is holy that he keeps writing in this genre.

Again, excellent world building and an engaging story with interesting characters (all of them, especially the kick-ass women).

Sometimes we are wrong when we believe that the Gods are punishing us. Especially when you escape one fate to be placed in what one might view as the same fate all over again but with a different person. The thing is fate has a way of placing us exactly where we need to be and with exactly who we need to be with. This is what happened to Kelas.

Kelas' life has been nothing but a living nightmare since he was forced into becoming a Hound as it is called in this book. A hound is basically a werewolf shifter that is controlled by a blood bond to a vampire. When a blood bond is established the shifter werewolf has no free will and no control over what it does. This was Kelas' fate.

Kelas was strong willed even though his blood bond vampire tried to break him. Eventually Kelas was able to finally escape her and break the blood bond. But he was no where near safe because Zoja wanted her prized Hound back. So a reward was placed for his capture. On the occasion that he was almost captured, Kelas fought with all he had even though he was out numbered. What Kelas thought was the end of him was actually just the beginning because a savior stepped in at the last minute and saved him.

When Kelas learned that he had been saved by a man named Roshan, he was not happy in the slightest. He was not happy because he is now bound by honor to follow Roshan until he fulfilles being able to save Roshan's life. This is a curse in Kelas' point of view because he just got rid of a bond to one vampire to be bound by honor to another. Kelas believes The Fates hate him but the it is the opposite that is to be true.

Little did Kelas know but when Roshan saved him, fate was stepping in to bring the person into his life that would forever change it. Little did Kelas also know but a war was coming and Toshan and Kelas would be instrumental in the outcome over Zoja.

Can Kelas get over he past and the mental and physical abuse he sustained at the hands of his former master in order to find his happiness or will he let the negative affect the outcome of his future and the future of others as well?

This book was unbelievable. It is full of action, adventure, danger, mystery, suspense, friendship, family, and love. Devin Harnois definitely wrote a book that will be remembered after the book is finished. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. From one moment to the next I never knew what was going to happen next. A very exciting read!!!

This was a surprisingly good story…

So, I have recently learned that I don’t particularly like high angst between main characters. That said, while there was quite a bit of angst between the MCs, it was due to outside influences & made this an easy read for me. I loved the found family dynamics & since I can’t for the life of me remember the characters names 🤦🏽‍♀️, loved how the author took great care in the crafting of this story; MC1 is a complex & “broken” man (in his opinion), who is adamant he is unworthy of love & acceptance. MC2 is a beautiful, inside and out vampire who dares to confront MC1’s opinions of himself especially in regards to what he was required to do because of the bond commands he had been given as a bonded Hound. MC1’s emotions were expertly written & the character was not in any way dealt with badly, which another peeve I have come to understand about myself. Anyway, I’m honestly not entirely certain how to wrap this review up 😂 to give anyone the idea of checking this title out, but I do recommend it!!

I started off liking UNDAUNTED but it just didn't last for me and I found myself losing interest in the story. I loved the concept and liked the idea of Kelas eventually coming to trust Roshan even though he's a vampire. I was also happy to see some tough female side characters but as I continued reading, everyone felt a bit two dimensional and the very modern writing style felt weird in a swords and castles fantasy book.

Content Warning: Kelas was turned into a werewolf against his will and the kept as a slave by the vampires; Roshan was turned into a vampire against his will but has made peace with it; Kelas' culture keeps prisoners of war for seven years as slaves before releasing them, he initially accepts his but after his enslavement and a lecture by another character he realizes that it's wrong

This is for Undaunted

This book gets a 5/5 from me. I really enjoyed reading this book. The plot and the characters are very believable. Kelas is a werewolf that escapes from his cruel vampire master. He used to be top enforcer or hound. He is cornered by the people sent to retrieve him. But Roshan, another vampire, steps in a saves him. Kelas does not trust Roshan or any vampire for that matter. Roshan and his mercenary friends convince Kelas to travel with them. He can make money and hide from his former master. Someone along the way Kelas’ feelings toward Roshan start to change and Kelas is enjoying his newfound group of friends that are becoming his family. A person from Roshan’s past shows up and Kelas has to back to former master to save the country. He and Roshan will have to be very sure of each other if they are going to succeed.

I liked the plot idea - that humans turned against their will into werewolves and vampires (though vampires unaffected by sun, so more like warlocks with bloody appetites) could try to retain some kindness and decency, despite being monsters. And I didn't mind the characters. It was the writing that let it down for me. High fantasy requires a certain heightened language to make it work. This book is set in some medieval time, with spells and horses and swords, no guns and cars, and yet the language didn't reflect that. The descriptions were too casual - restaurants instead of taverns, is one eg that just jarred on me. I felt like the world building wasn't sufficiently strong and got a bit muddled. So I let it go and dnf. YMMV.

MM romance and adventure. A man whose family was slaughtered by vampires, who was turned into a werewolf against his will by them, and who is enslaved to one of them, is bitter. he also has a lot of hopelessness and self-hatred. When a passing vampire rescues him, he is understandably wary. Slowly he warms to the man and the man's adopted crew of mercenaries. The two fall in love, even though same-sex attraction is new to the vampire. The man feels as if he is again part of a family.
It turns out that they are all pawns in someone's larger game. The second half of the book was tense and uncomfortable for me. It all turns out as expected though.

I thought this was a great story with both loveable and loathesome characters. Roshan was not what I expected for a vampire, in a good way, of course. Kelas just broke my heart. He had been through so much and was so broken. But in the end, he prevailed. These two were so good together and so richly deserved their HEA. Their little family was a great addition to the cast.
One thing that could have been a lot better was the world building. In some ways, it felt like the middle ages, but then there were some “modern” conveniences such as indoor plumbing and paved roads. The take on vampires, werewolves/hounds, and other paranormal beings was somewhat different than most paranormal stories so it would have been nice if there was some more information about the world they lived in.
