A historic Marvel first - the one-shot double feature that kicked off Iron Man and Sub-Mariner's very first solo series! While Iron Man must contend with both the scheming Maggia and the evil of A.I.M., Namor must battle to save his underwater realm from the darkness of Destiny!
Archie Goodwin was an American comic book writer, editor, and artist. He worked on a number of comic strips in addition to comic books, and is best known for his Warren and Marvel Comics work. For Warren he was chief writer and editor of landmark horror anthology titles Creepy and Eerie, and for Marvel he set up the creator-owned Epic Comics as well as adapting Star Wars into both comics and newspaper strips. He is regularly cited as the "best-loved comic book editor, ever."
This was the continuation of the last issue of Tales of Suspense for Iron Man. IM was tied and helpless but nothing stops the golden avenger for long! He manages to free himself and his first thought is to help the innocent people still in the sinking ship. Before he could reach them, a strange beam falls and lands on Iron Man and pulls him upward toward the unknown! This issue was more of a filler to gap the space between having Iron Man in ToS and giving him his own series. I feel like any of the real action will be in that big premiere issue and I am very excited to read it!!
Iron Man: 8/10 I think there's an improvement in the storytelling and writing in this series since Archie Goodwin is the writer.
The inclusion of A.I.M is not gratuitous. All the characters and groups have credible motivations and act with sense.
I love the pace and flow of the story; it is very cinematic. The transitions among the different characters and groups fit magnificently with the action, tension and confusion that reigns through all the plot. Also, the mystery over the identity of Big M is well executed. All of this masterfully drawn by Gene Colan, as for example on the full panel on page 3.
There's a competition between Jasper and Whiplash to be the long-winded champion without actually doing anything. Whiplash at this moment is not more of a threating to Iron Man than a fly. Whenever Iron Man is tired of him, ZAAAASSSS one repulsor ray in HIS FACE and DONE.
At this point nobody remembers the overused and overacting drama around Pepper, Hogan and Tony Stark, nor the characters themselves.
Namor: 5/10 The only interesting parts here are Gene Colan art and the flashback linking Destiny's origin and Namor's father expedition to Antarctica. Anyway, the story is not yet told, so we will see in next issues, whether it is disappointing or not. The rest is kind of boring because of the dull villain and rather normal action.
