His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered.
In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics.
In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line (Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries.
Mike also created the award-winning comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head and has co-written two novels (Baltimore, or, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City) with best-selling author Christopher Golden.
Mike worked (very briefly) with Francis Ford Coppola on his film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer on the Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and was visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He lives somewhere in Southern California with his wife, daughter, a lot of books and a cat.

The more I read these one-off stories the more I enjoy them. I have never really enjoyed long running storylines as I invariably lose or miss an installment - and yet the contain the same humour action action as the main stories.
These books contain 3 unrelated stories - so unrelated you may not actually see a reference to Hellboy or the BPRD at all in them - and I think that is all part of the of the charm the total randomness of the contents never ceases to entertain me

Nothing too ground breaking for the Mignolaverse, but still good stories. I think the Edward Grey story was my favorite.

Практично всі зимові спецвипуски "Геллбоя" це своєрідні візитівки-запрошення до прочитання відповідних тематичних серій Геллбойверсуму.
Чудовий спецвипуск 2017 року містить в собі три такі історії від трьох різних команд авторыв, вже традиційно, кожна серія має певний стосунок до Різдва чи Зими і всі вони відбуваються в різних часових проміжках.
"Велика Хуртовина" — це історія, котра выдбуваэться в Корнволі 1891 року. Даний катаклізм це не зовсім фікція, адже ще нобелівський лавреат Вільям Батлер Єйтс у своїх поемах неодноразово згадує Великий Буревій. Тим не менш, у світі Міньйоли причиною віхоли стає магічний артефакт.
Головний герой цієї історії Едвард Ґрей - відьмолов, котрий певний час перебував на службі королеви, але зараз він воїн вільного списа, себто, майже Ван Гелсінг, фрілансер. В компанії Сари Джувелл він натрапляє на затонулий, абсолютно заледенілий корабель, ціла команда котрого перетворилась на крижані статуї. Прочитавши кілька сторінок, читач усвідомлює, що це лише невеликий епізод з епопеї Едварда Ґрея - ключового персонажа історій Міньйоли. На даний час у світ вже вийшло три томи пригод вікторінаського слідчого, серед котрих особливої уваги вартує "Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder: In the Service of Angels" (сценарій Міньйоли, малюнок Стенбека) з котрого й починається історія Ґрея і котрий, я би з задоволення прочитав ще раз, тому застосуємо гештег #видайтеукраїнською.
"Хай береже вас Господь" — історія, котра діється у Фейрфілді (між іншим, там же знаходиться перша штаб-квартира БПРО), надворі грудень, 1961 рік. Геллбой ще відносно молодий, Ейба не знайдено, Ліз Шерман поки дитина, котра не спалила пів кварталу з власною сім'єю. В перипетіях сюжету дуже легко не помітити певного персонажа в білому капелюсі, штанях і пальто, котрий дає пораду Тревору Брутенгольмові. Але давайте поглянемо на творчу команду: Кріс Роберсон і Пол Ґріст — це двоє творців лімітованої серії під назвою "The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed". А головним героєм цієї серії, є інопланетянин, раса котрого вже з`являється у виданому Vovkulaka шикарному бібліотечному виданні (раджу придбати, якщо ще ні), згодом він ще дасть про себе знати у шедевральному "Червяку-завойовнику". На перший погляд сюжет простий — проклятий амулет, котрий перетворює актора на неконтрольованого агресивного монстра, але це також реверанс в сторону попередньої історії і стимул прочитати лімітовану серії про Візитера.
"Остання відьма Фейрфілду" — мій фаворит. Ця коротка історія прекрасна потрійно, тому що 1) малює її напевно один з найталановитіших сучасних комікс-художників Сабастьян Фіумара, 2) вона виконана в тому ж стилі, що і серія "BPRD Hell on Erth. The Devil you know" , 3) тут з'являється канонічна і культова трійця найбільших героїв усесвіту Геллбоя : Анунґ Ун Рама, він же "Великий Червоний", він же Геллбой; Ліз Шерман — аватара вогняного бога, "Вмістилише Врілу" і Меч Апокаліпсису; Абрахам Сейпіен — він же Еверетт Ленґдон Коул, Батько Нового Життя і просто "Ейб" людина-амфібія.
Незважаючи на моторошні подробиці — відьомське прокляття, двох невинних жертв, ожилий ліс, як же приємно бачити це тріо в дії. А як це намальовано...
Кожна панель — витвір мистецтва, текстура, динаміка, деталізація — Фіумара у всій своїй красі. Скажу не в образу Майку і Феґредо, але саме арт братів Фіумар для мене найкраще підходить для серії "БПРО".
Українське видання цього невеликого, але цікавого комікса мені сподобалось, зауважу тільки певні огріхи зі сторони редактора і коректора. На третій сторінці замість "вище носа" написано "вище ніса" (відразу асоціація з кровосісями), а на сьомій сторінці замість "більшість снігу вже тануло" написано "більшість сніг вже почав танути".
Комікс невеличкий — журнальчик на 28 сторінок, проте це ключ, котрий відкриває для вас Геллбойверс — Всесвіт тисяч сторінок і десятків героїв Майка Міньйоли.

The Great Blizzard:
3 stars - I liked it
This story is about Sir Edward Grey and Sarah Jewell investigating the cause of an unexpected blizzard during Spring Equinox. It was interesting but also a bit disappointing with how abrupt the ending felt.
God Rest Ye Merry:
2 stars - It was ok
This is a Hellboy and BPRD story. They are out for Christmas and come across a possessed Santa who was attacking people. This was short and fine. I am very curious as to who the mysterious guy was though.
The Last Witch of Fairfield:
2 stars - It was ok
TW: attempted suicide
This is a Hellboy, Abe, and Liz story about them searching for lost kids in the woods. The vengeful spirit of a murdered witch has taken them. This was an ok story but I felt like it was a bit confusing with the explanation of what the witch was doing with these kids

Mignola's Hellboy Universe works as a platform to tell multiple stories with a supernatural background, and this anthology series allows multiple creative to partake in the fun with an easy page rate. There are set in multiple timeliness and with many characters and is a fun dip into the world of the BPRD.
