Charlotte Gibbs has returned with her sister Mia to sell their parent’s summer cottage at Firefly Lake. She hasn’t been back in eighteen years and returning has stirred up memories of past summers. When she last departed Firefly Lake she ended all communication with her boyfriend, Sean Carmichael and the community. She never explained her behavior and her parents were very influential in her actions.
Sean Carmichael grew up in Firefly Lake and currently runs the family marina with his brother. He is divorced with a teenage son named Ty. He has never gotten over Charlotte and has many unanswered questions about her abrupt disappearance.
They reconnect when Sean drops off a boat at the Gibb’s cottage. Sean had no idea that Charlotte and Mia were back in town. They start talking and reminiscing and then quickly progress into a soulful kiss. He realizes that he has strong feelings towards Charlotte and perhaps she feels the same about him. Will they be able to get beyond the secrets that doomed their relationship?

The Cottage at Firefly Lake is Jen Gilroy's debut romance book, but you honestly can't tell. She effortlessly brings this wonderful tale of second chances to us in such a sweet and romantic way that you won't want to put this book down.
I really liked Charlotte and Sean together and I was so happy that they didn't give up on each other. They were far from perfect characters but seeing them try to move past their mistakes was very entertaining. Their story does involve a little drama but I didn't mind since it actually peaked my interest even more. Along with the main characters, we're introduced to a few secondary characters that will leave you wanting more.
The one complaint that I had was Charlotte. I wanted to like her character so much more than I did but I just didn't feel like there was much development of her character. There were more than a few times that she wasn't as strong as I would have liked and it didn't always seem to go with the character we were first introduced to.
Overall, if you're looking for a romantic tale of forgiveness than this is the one you need to choose next. I had no problem sitting down and reading this book all the way through because it was just that intriguing, and I hope that's how this story will be for everyone else.

My Review:
The Cottage at Firefly Lake was a fairly realistic and thoughtful story with real-life issues and small town family concerns familiar to many. The characters were relatable and not always likable and sometimes frustrating, just like most people I know. The storyline see-saws between hopefulness and angst and was packed to the brim with old and new secrets, lies, missed opportunities, distrust, greed, cowardice, regrets, small-town thinking, betrayals, clouded family histories, a second-chance romance, young love, and meddlesome family members. I was quickly enveloped in Ms. Gilroy’s narrative and was soon emotionally invested in the characters. I remained curious and eager for each tidbit I learned about their back-story as it was slowly revealed layer by layer to the very end. I kept flip-flopping in my opinion about the motives and intentions of several characters; Ms. Gilroy is a cagey one and I would bet she would be an ace poker player. I am even more impressed when I realized this was her debut novel. I was hopeful for a positive result while holding my breath throughout for Sean as, by their history, Charlotte and her family had proven themselves to be untrustworthy. I am looking forward to a return visit with book two, Summer On Firefly Lake.

I noticed this book months before it came out and I kept thinking how much I wanted to read it. Of course I knew that with how busy my blogging schedule is that wouldn't be happening anytime soon. So I came up with a plan...pick it as my joint review for Book Club Thursday!

One of the things you pray for is that the book you choice for your joint review will be a hit with the other two blogs. No one wants to pick that book that no one else likes. I'm not sure how they feel yet, I have to find out at the same time as you guys, but I can tell you what I thought.

I really didn't care for this book. Or I should say I didn't care fore some of it. Some parts are okay, others, not so much. The story felt very soup opera-ish. I except to hear dramatic music in the back round as I read the story.
So many of the characters I didn't like. In fact the only one that I really enjoyed was Sean. He seemed to be the only really caring person. At times I liked Charlotte, but then the other times she kind of pissed me off.
I so really wanted to love this story and it pisses me off that I didn't. I did mention that the story was a totally wall banger and that's true. There are moments that I really liked it. But those moments are few and far between.
I'm glad that I at least gave the story a chance, way before I bought the next one. I'm sure most of you know how easy it is to buy two or three books in a series and then read the first book only to realize you don't care for it.

The Cottage at Firefly Lake is a book about summer memories and past regrets… and what to do when they catch up with you in the present.
On the surface level, this debut novel crafts a poignant story in a small lake town that comes alive, thanks to the author’s skill at setting. With descriptions that are tucked away naturally in the fabric of the plot, readers gain a vivid image of Firefly Lake without being bogged down in details. The bittersweet reunion of Sean and Charlotte (Charlie) sparks with still-there electricity and haunting regrets. Speaking of Sean, he is a great guy – steady, sexy, stable. He loves his son, he loves his work, he loves his home.
Separately, Sean and Charlie both have compelling stories of dreams achieved and dreams lost. Yet when you start to search below the surface of Sean and Charlotte’s relationship, there’s not much there. Their chemistry seems to be limited to the physical then and now (their emotions & feelings about each other centered around sex) and to me this wasn’t enough to explain the continued pull after Charlie behaves the way she does.
Bottom Line: The Cottage at Firefly Lake is an admirable debut novel from Jen Gilroy. While the only character I really liked was Sean (and of course his sweet dog Shadow) I fell in love with the setting! It’s a good choice to have along on your summer vacation; whether you’re at the mountains, the lake or the beach, you’ll enjoy this introduction to Firefly Lake. I could have done without some things – the relationship between Ty and Naomi, for starters – but this is probably more a matter of personal preference than anything.
*Readers may want to be aware that there is some cursing in this book, as well as 'open door' scenes of an intimate nature.*

My REVIEW OF "THE COTTAGE AT FIREFLY LAKE" by JEN GILROY
"The Cottage at Firefly Lake" by Jen Gilroy is such an enjoyable, and delightful read! The timeline of the story is in the present with references to the past only when it relates to the characters or events. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Women's Fiction, and Romance. The author describes the cottages, the town , the people and the lake, and I feel like taking a drive just to vacation and relax by the water.
Jen Gilroy's descriptions of her characters remind me of people that could live next door, or in my community. Some of the characters are complex and complicated, but they feel so real. Characters that make mistakes, have secrets, and work hard to get to their goals in life. In the blurb to the story it states," Some mistakes can never be fixed and some secrets never forgiven.....but some loves can never be forgotten."

Charlotte is a successful journalist, that has provided stories from around the world, many in war zones. The Gibbs family has owned the cottage for many years, and every summer would come out to enjoy living in the cottage and the lake.
Sean Carmichael and his twin brother build boats, and have a family marina. Sean is divorced, and hopes his teenage son will one day take over the business.

The Cottage at Firefly Lake by Jen Gilroy is a second chance romance set in the small town of Firefly Lake, Vermont featuring Charlotte Gibbs and Sean Carmichael. As the book opens, Charlotte is back at Firefly Lake with her sister Mia in order to sale their parents’ lake cottage. It has been a long time since she has been in Firefly Lake; when she was young, she and Mia used to spend long summers there with their family, and Charlotte was in love with one of the locals, Sean Carmichael. The last time she left was the last time she and Sean had any contact, so now that she has suddenly returned, it has brought back all sorts of feelings for both Charlotte and Sean.
The Gibbs sisters’ return has caused a small stir in Firefly Lake because they are considering sales of the lakeside cottage to a resort or hotel owner. Residents of Firefly Lake love their community because of its small town feel; bringing transient traffic and tourism would undoubtedly change the feel of the community. Sean stands to lose the most, as his family’s land and business borders the land beside of the Gibbs’ lake cottage. As he tries to convince Charlotte not to sale to these big businesses, the two remember the feelings they had for one another so long ago. Charlotte is put in the position to have to choose between her loyalty to her sister and selling the cottage for a large sum of money (hello, backstory!) and her loyalty to and feelings for Sean and what she feels is the right thing to do.
I love second chance relationship stories. This relationship in particular has a few elements that made me excited for the “second chance” part: one of the involved parties kept a whopper of a secret from the other for the entire time they were apart, one set of parents forced the couple’s breakup, and both Charlotte and Sean have thought about each other steadily throughout the years. Because of the secrets and hurt, Charlotte has some thick, self-imposed walls that she’s put in place to keep herself from getting hurt again. Once Sean is able to break thru and Charlotte lets herself feel things, and once these two begin to open up and talk about what exactly happened eighteen years ago: the progression of this romance is great.
The events from their past broke my heart, but their restoration made me really happy.
This book initially caught my eye because it has a small town, lakeside setting — I love both of these things. I love the cover and the description. Even though the story actually only takes place in a fairly small part of Firefly Lake, I felt the setting and I appreciate that. I also love that there is a secondary cast introduced that will feature in the upcoming series installments. When I started the book, I didn’t realize the sister-relationship between Charlotte and Mia would weigh so heavily, but this was one of my favorite parts of the story. I can’t wait to get more of Mia’s story in the next book and see what is in store for her future.
There is a small secondary romance with Ty (Sean’s son) and Naomi (Mia’s daughter) which I loved. I’d love to be able to check in with these two and see what they’re up to.
If I could change anything about the story, I think I’d make Charlotte a little less rough around the edges, more willing to show her vulnerabilities and weaknesses. The Gibbs sisters’ return has caused a small stir in Firefly Lake because they are considering sales of the lakeside cottage to a resort or hotel owner. Residents of Firefly Lake love their community because of its small town feel; bringing transient traffic and tourism would undoubtedly change the feel of the community. Sean stands to lose the most, as his family’s land and business borders the land beside of the Gibbs’ lake cottage. As he tries to convince Charlotte not to sale to these big businesses, the two remember the feelings they had for one another so long ago. Charlotte is put in the position to have to choose between her loyalty to her sister and selling the cottage for a large sum of money (hello, backstory!) and her loyalty to and feelings for Sean and what she feels is the right thing to do.
I love second chance relationship stories. This relationship in particular has a few elements that made me excited for the “second chance” part: one of the involved parties kept a whopper of a secret from the other for the entire time they were apart, one set of parents forced the couple’s breakup, and both Charlotte and Sean have thought about each other steadily throughout the years. Because of the secrets and hurt, Charlotte has some thick, self-imposed walls that she’s put in place to keep herself from getting hurt again. Once Sean is able to break thru and Charlotte lets herself feel things, and once these two begin to open up and talk about what exactly happened eighteen years ago: the progression of this romance is great.
The events from their past broke my heart, but their restoration made me really happy.
This book initially caught my eye because it has a small town, lakeside setting — I love both of these things. I love the cover and the description. Even though the story actually only takes place in a fairly small part of Firefly Lake, I felt the setting and I appreciate that. I also love that there is a secondary cast introduced that will feature in the upcoming series installments. When I started the book, I didn’t realize the sister-relationship between Charlotte and Mia would weigh so heavily, but this was one of my favorite parts of the story. I can’t wait to get more of Mia’s story in the next book and see what is in store for her future.
There is a small secondary romance with Ty (Sean’s son) and Naomi (Mia’s daughter) which I loved. I’d love to be able to check in with these two and see what they’re up to.

In my quest of looking for new authors and different kind of stories, I found
The Cottage at Firefly Lake,
the debut novel of Jen Gilroy, a beautiful love story about family, forgiveness, overpassing fears and of course, true love. This book features two stories, Charlie and Sean’s as the main couple and Naomi and Ty’s as secondary couple. These romances are entangled between family secrets, pride, mistakes, lies, open old wounds, and the future of a whole traditional town. This mix had me glue to this book and as the story was progressing, I was more intrigued about how it would end up and I can say I’m very satisfied with the ending.
Charlie and Sean loved each other madly and truly when they were teenagers, but once they were 18, Charlie broke up with Sean and left him without giving a real explanation about her decision. They took different paths. Sean stayed in Firefly Lake, run his family business, got married and had a kid, but that marriage ended up in divorce and now he is only devoted to his son and Carmichael’s. Charlie, on the other hand, went to college and became a successful journalist and traveled all over the world. She was fully dedicated to her career and herself. Eighteen years later they were reunited, but they couldn’t be together without opening old wounds, breaking hearts all over again, forgive, but most importantly, understand that they would have to meet each other halfway in order to finally be together.
Naomi and Ty’s story was more lighthearted than their aunt’s and dad’s story. Yes, just like Charlie and Sean fell in love when they were teens, Naomi and Ty fell in love at first sight the day Naomi and her family arrived to Firefly Lake to deal with the family cottage deal. From the moment I met Charlotte and Sean, I was desperate to figure out why Charlotte was left behind. I was intrigued by their circumstances and couldn’t wait to read more. I thought Charlotte and Sean had an excellent pull and I really enjoyed watching them try to figure things out.
As far as debut novels go, I think this one is well written and has a ton of potential. This book was sweet with just the right amount of drama and romance. I look forward to reading more from this series and this author.

Da ich Sommergeschichten wie sie der Klappentext von "Dort, wo ich dich finde" verspricht, sehr gerne lese, war ich sehr gespannt auf die Geschichte.
Mir hat hat das Buch ganz gut gefallen, aber komplett warm geworden bin ich damit leider nicht. Irgendwie hat mir etwas gefehlt, was ich nicht so ganz greifen kann. Ich denke, dass es eine Mischung aus Atmosphäre und Charaktere war. Charlie und Sean waren mir zwar sympathisch, aber so ganz greifbar waren die beiden für mich nicht. Auch wollten die Funken zwischen den beiden nicht so ganz bei mir ankommen.
Von der Atmosphäre hatte ich mir auch ein wenig mehr versprochen, denn so ganz konnte mich die Magie des Firefly Lakes und des kleinen Ortes mich nicht überzeugen.
Dies klingt jetzt negativer als es ist, denn insgesamt konnte mich das Buch gut unterhalten und ich mochte auch die Geschichte und das Setting. Die Geschichte war auch vom Schreibstil her sehr flüssig und angenehm zu lesen.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a beautiful, heart-warming second chance love story. It was filled with amazing characters, real-life challenges, familial conflicts, disturbing secrets and more. I laughed. I cried. I hoped. Well done!

A story about family, loyalty, forgiveness, and falling in love, learning to make compromises, and building up the kind of life that suits you despite the circumstances and expectations from others.
Charlotte Gibbs has faced tragedy and loss several times during her life, not only as a reporter but in her personal life as well. She is tough and resilient until her cup runs over, and she needs time to heal, not only from the wounds in her body but in her mind and nightmares as well. Charlotte never felt that she was enough for her parents, and to prove that, to get the acceptance and approval she pushed herself hard to be the best, to show that she can.
Sean Carmichael has worked hard to make the family business the success it is today. He is looking after everyone in the family, keeping it going, keeping them employed, safe, and happy. His heart was broken by Charlotte long time ago, and those wounds are still sore, the doubts, the mistrust, and hurt still linger in his mind.
The story has a large cast of characters, and it is told from several points of view. Even Sean's son and Charlotte's niece gets their time in the limelight with the teenage crush. There are secrets that shatter hearts and minds, trust is not easy to come after being stretched and abused so many times. The characters are likable, yet far from perfect. I grew to care for them and wanted them to succeed, but they also frustrated me several times. I missed a little spark in the dialogue, little more depth with the characters, to connect with them on an emotional level as well. Charlotte had had to make some difficult decisions during her life, that still had the power to hurt others, and it was not always easy to like her or accept her choices.
There are lots of happening in the story, the small town events and life decisions weighing the characters minds making the plot move forwards on a leisurely tempo.
The activities made me remember the childhood summers and the fun to be had at the lake, making me smile. I think this is a great novel for vacation, or if you want to escape to the hot, unhurried, summer days with a little romance, family drama, and life troubles on the side.

This was a rather sad story when it came to the main characters' past and family issues. I guess the romance was alright, but there was a lot of pain between Charlotte and Sean from their past. The description of the setting was pretty good and I could picture myself at Firefly Lake. I don't mind quaint forest towns since I've gone up north a quite a few times and enjoy some parts of that nature. The focus on the beauty of nature is better than romanticizing small communities. Not saying that close-knit towns exist, but I feel a lot of people don't seem to understand the underlining issues that a small town can face.
Gilroy did a great job bringing issues that towns can face such as the threat of being bought out by corporates, losing jobs, or having a hard time leaving for that matter. Sean is one of those who never want to leave and continue his legacy until Judgement Day and feels obligated to his loved ones for doing so. His loyalty is sound and I love that in a person, but when you lose trust in him even once, he'll make you remember it until you die. So, there's the downside of being overbearing on wanting things to go your way and not having any room for negotiation.
I didn't feel much of twinge of grief when he kept telling Charlotte that he couldn't trust her because he kept saying it over and over again. Like, dude, we got it the first time. Anyone who doesn't trust me just leaves my life. It's better for them and for me.
The other turn off was the teenage romance between Charlotte's niece and Sean's son from his first marriage. I'm glad the kids weren't ignored and given a personality, but minors making out and about to get it on is not something I want to read. It bores me and brings me back to all the crappy YA books I read as a teenager myself. It wasn't too excessive and I do give credit to Ty for pointing out his dad's hypocrisy when he was at that age with Charlotte. At most ages, I suppose anyone has an opportunity of fucking up their relationships.
I can't wait for the next book though. Mia's story sounds a little more appealing.

Great second chance romance. Rocky moments for Sean and Charlie for they are both so stubborn and set in their ways. Charlie is also afraid. Afraid that Sean will put his business first.
Sean is a caring and gentle guy. He is responsible and family oriented. His love for his son is great and he empathizes with him even though it doesn’t seem it. He also trusts him and seeing them work on their relationship is awesome. Sean is also hiding his heart and trying not to let anyone in. He had such a incredible relationship with Charlie and when it ended for no reason he was hurt. Really hurt that he never really let anyone in again. He also never got over Charlie so when she showed up again at her family’s cottage his heart skipped a beat. He did try to tamper it because of all the pain but he couldn’t fight it for long. Besides that he was fighting her over the cottage. Charlie and her sister were there to sell to a big developer and that would have hurt his business and the town in some ways.
Charlie is going through a lot. She is trying to deal with a incident out in the field, why keeping the demons of the past with Sean away. How they learn to let go, forgive and compromise so that their love can grow and bring them together.

The Cottage at Firefly Lake is a book about second chances. Not just the second chance at love that forms the backbone of the story, but also a second chance at family, and a second chance at life. Or perhaps that last would be better referred to as a “do over” at life. You be the judge.
Charlotte and Mia Gibbs have returned to Firefly Lake to sell their late mother’s cottage. It’s the place where they spent their summers, and it’s all they have left of their mother. It’s also a place they both love and resent, and now it represents a chance for both of them to get some financial security at the cost of losing their last connection to their mother.
And possibly their last real connection to each other.
Charlotte and Mia were “summer people” in the community, but for Charlie it was much, much more. Charlie didn’t feel like she fit in with her family, with her perfect homemaker mother and her seemingly equally perfect sister Mia. Instead, Charlie wanted adventure, and she spent those childhood summers with her best friend, local boy Sean Carmichael.
Their intense childhood friendship matured into an equally intense teenage love. But Sean was tied to Firefly Lake and the boat crafting and marina business that had been in his family for generations. Charlie was off to college and a career as a foreign correspondent. And even though she didn’t know exactly where she would end up, she knew at 18 that what she wanted was to travel and explore, not tie herself to the tiny Vermont lake town, no matter how much she loved it, or Sean.

Escape Rating B+: It was terrific to read something a bit light and fluffy after yesterday’s much more serious book. The Cottage at Firefly Lake was a great little pick-me-up.
It also felt more than a bit familiar.
Separated by several states, Mary McNear’s Butternut Lake series (start with Up at Butternut Lake) has the same feel as Firefly Lake. It is also a small town with a lake at its center and heart. And it is also a place where people get a second chance at love, and where sisters get a second chance to find each other, particularly in the most recent book in the series, The Space Between Sisters. Anyone who loves Butternut Lake will also enjoy Firefly Lake, and very much vice versa.
Meanwhile, back in Vermont at Firefly Lake, this story is a lovely introduction to the place and to the series. It’s a story with several threads, and they blend together pretty well.
The big story isn’t the romance, it’s the relationship between sisters Charlie and Mia. They’re sisters, and they love each other, but they are also distant and don’t know each other. There’s also a whole lot of sisterly envy going on, as each of them believes that the other has the “perfect life” and each of them believes that the other had a happier, or at least easier, childhood and adolescence with their late parents.
And there’s a whole lot of family history bound up very interestingly in this story. Not just the Gibbs’ family, but also Sean’s family. And let’s just say that the late Dr. Gibbs was a real piece of work, with all of the negative connotations of that phrase. He’s still messing up everyone’s lives, even from the grave.
One of the great things about this story is the way that the romance develops. Even though Sean and Charlie never really got over each other, they also both recognize that they are not the same people they were half a lifetime ago. They don’t exactly take it slow, but they also don’t gloss over the fact that if they want to have a relationship, it has to be in this present and not the past. Nothing about this is easy.
There’s a lot to love at Firefly Lake. I’m looking forward to a return visit in Summer on Firefly Lake, appropriately scheduled for this summer.
The Cottage at Firefly Lake is a book about second chances. Not just the second chance at love that forms the backbone of the story, but also a second chance at family, and a second chance at life. Or perhaps that last would be better referred to as a “do over” at life. You be the judge.
Charlotte and Mia Gibbs have returned to Firefly Lake to sell their late mother’s cottage. It’s the place where they spent their summers, and it’s all they have left of their mother. It’s also a place they both love and resent, and now it represents a chance for both of them to get some financial security at the cost of losing their last connection to their mother.
And possibly their last real connection to each other.
Charlotte and Mia were “summer people” in the community, but for Charlie it was much, much more. Charlie didn’t feel like she fit in with her family, with her perfect homemaker mother and her seemingly equally perfect sister Mia. Instead, Charlie wanted adventure, and she spent those childhood summers with her best friend, local boy Sean Carmichael.
Their intense childhood friendship matured into an equally intense teenage love. But Sean was tied to Firefly Lake and the boat crafting and marina business that had been in his family for generations. Charlie was off to college and a career as a foreign correspondent. And even though she didn’t know exactly where she would end up, she knew at 18 that what she wanted was to travel and explore, not tie herself to the tiny Vermont lake town, no matter how much she loved it, or Sean.
But instead of a natural breakup over time and diverging interests, Charlie left Sean suddenly and inexplicably, and neither of them ever got over it. They’ve never gotten past the intensity of that teenage love, even though Charlie has had a terrific and exciting career, and Sean has been married (now divorced) and has a son turning 16.
There’s too much unfinished business between them.
Charlie and Mia need to sell the cottage. Badly. Mia fears that her husband is about to leave her with their two daughters and no career to fall back on. And she’s right. Charlie recently survived an IED attack while on assignment, and her insurance didn’t cover all the resulting medical bills. Her savings are tapped, and she is all too aware that she has no one to rely on in a crisis except her current shaky self.
But the only offer on the table is one that will change Firefly Lake forever, and not in a way that anyone wants. It’s up to Charlie to find a way to make things work – for the town, for her sister, for herself, and most of all, for any possible future she might have with Sean.

The Cottage at Firefly Lake is Jen Gilroy's debut book and the first in a promising new series. I can't wait to see what this talented new author has in store for us lucky readers. I know I certainly enjoyed this book and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
The Cottage at Firefly Lake contains all the great things that makes for an awesome read. There is romance, family relationships,past secrets, and a nice amount of drama to keep those pages flipping.
Charlotte Gibbs has lead an exciting life on the road in all types of conditions reporting the news as she lives it. Charlotte returns to Firefly Lake with her sister and family. Charlotte has been side lined by an injury and it's time to handle the final details of their mother's estate. Firefly Lake brings back memories of love and loss for Charlotte. I bonded quickly with Charlie. She a smart, independent lady that loves her family. She's been a bit of an absentee sister and Auntie with all her travels. She's making up for it with quality time at the cottage.
Sean Carmichael is running the family business in Firefly Lake and raising a teenage son. Charlie and Sean were each other's first love. When Charlie left town years ago she broke Sean's heart. He's tried to move on but just hasn't found the love he had with Charlie. Sean loves his family and is always there for them. He comes from a very close knit family and they all share in the duties of running Carmichael's.
The sparks from their teenage years are still there for both Charlie and Sean. Their love is still there so many years later but there is also distrust and misunderstanding of what and why things went wrong in the past. There are plenty of secrets from the past that could easily rip apart what might be a second chance at first love.
I enjoyed watching Charlie and Sean get to know each other again and the emotions they experienced with each unveiling. The questions of who is going to buy the Gibb's cottage also adds in some drama. There is drama with Charlie's sister Mia that gives the sisters an extra push to regain that childhood closeness. I love when there is family interaction in a story. It just adds a little more dimension to the characters and explains more about their personalities and pasts.
Overall I truly enjoyed this debut book by Jen Gilroy. Her writing style was easy to read, the characters are well formed, and the story line kept my attention from the beginning to the end. I most certainly will be on the look for more books from Ms. Gilroy.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I've procrastinated writing my suggested review because I wish I had something more original to say about this book than the other posted, positive reviews.
The truth is that I am rarely enticed to read contemporary romance, preferring the rich detail offered by many historical Highlander, medieval, Americana and western authors.
However, I have enjoyed many contemporary romance books for a variety of reasons, whether it was due to the story line, the author's writing style, my mood, etc. Likely just a lucky combination.
So I can firmly admit that it takes something indescribably special to entice me to read a second contemporary book by the same author, and with this book, Jen Gilroy, has apparently hit my personal "trifecta".
This book reveals genuine characters with long histories & significant unshared things in their past. The detail and pace makes a movie play in my head and the new love and old love feelings and conflict ring true.
Less than halfway through "The Cottage at Firefly Lake" I was thinking, "Is this a seasoned contemporary author with a well-known pen name now using her real name or vice versa?" It is hard for me to believe this is Gilroy's first book published for mass market...or perhaps any market. This seems to be the general sentiment expressed in others' reviews as well.
I am a little disappointed that this romance has not taken off in reading circles as yet and hasn't even garnished a hundred ratings on Goodreads yet. I believe the author and this particular story may be the "sleeper" of winter 2017 contemporary romance and may later launch to a quickly expanding audience at a later date, perhaps during summer reading season and with the release of the sequel.
I am eagerly anticipating the release of the next book in the series this summer.
If I were Ms. Gilroy, I believe I'd invest in a good press/marketing agent and at least some limited events through the summer and fall to promote her debut book and the sequel release.
I've shared my giveaway edition of this book with a small circle of friends and am going to encourage my local library to add this book to their shelves and feature it on a list of summer reads or something like that.

Bei "Dort, wo ich dich finde" von Jen Gilroy handelt es sich um den ersten Band der Firefly-Lake-Serie. Das Buch hat mein Interesse aufgrund des emotionalen Klappentext geweckt, so dass ich schon sehr gespannt auf den Inhalt war.
Allerdings habe ich ein paar Seiten gebraucht, um so recht in die Handlung hineinzufinden, was vor allem ein wenig an der anfänglich mehr als missgünstigen Beziehung der Schwestern lag. Dann jedoch entwickelt sich der Roman zu einer überaus emotionalen und teils auch dramatischen Handlung, in dem die Figuren alle durch ihre individuellen Charaktereigenschaften zum Gelingen der Handlung beitragen können.
Im Mittelpunkt dieses Romans steht die Journalistin Charlie, die nach einem schicksalshaften Ereignis ein wenig mit sich und ihrer Zukunft hadert. Charlie kehrt mit ihrer Schwester Mia zurück in den kleinen Ort Firefly Lake, um das Cottage ihrer Familie zu verkaufen. Kaum im kleinen Ort angekommen, trifft sie auf ihre Jugendliebe Sean, mit dem sie mehr als glückliche Sommer in ihrer Jugend verbracht hat. Alle Gefühle kochen wieder auf, die jedoch überschattet werden von dunklen Geheimnissen. Letztendlich müssen sich alle Charaktere entscheiden, wie sie ihre Leben zukünftig leben wollen.
Die Figuren in diesem Roman sind sehr vielschichtig und charakterstark gezeichnet, so dass sie alle einzigartige Züge haben, die sie auszeichnet. Sie sind sehr lebensnah geschrieben und es fällt leicht sie auseinander zuhalten.
Und auch wenn die anfänglichen Sticheleien zwischen Charlie und Mia zunächst als anstrengend empfand, tragen gerade ihre unterschiedlichen Sichtweisen auf die Geschehnisse bzw. auch der Vergangenheit zum Gelingen der Handlung bei und beleben diese.
Jen Gilroys Schreibstil ist emotional und zugleich locker leicht. Man fliegt förmlich durch die Handlung und wird von den Ereignissen mitgerissen. Gleichzeitig ist ihr Schreibstil auch sehr bildhaft schön, so dass man beim Lesen nicht anders kann, als sich in die Gegend zu verlieben. Ich hatte beim Lesen alles bildlich vor Augen und mir gewünscht real vor Ort zu sein.
Der Roman lebt von den teils dunklen Geheimnissen, den die Figuren umgibt und die alle nach und nach ans Licht kommen und die Handlung so immer wieder neuen Auftrieb geben.

Jen Gilroys' The Cottage At Firefly Lane is a heart-stirring debut centering around forgiveness and second chances. Charlotte "Charlie" Gibbs returns home to sell her mothers cottage and is almost immediately faced with her past, her first and only love Sean Carmichael. Their deep but long ago connection, one that is nearly beyond repair, forms the basis for the story line but the story is not limited to these two characters and the past. The family interactions that Gilroy paints shows the intensity and significance in these relationships and the far reaching impacts of one families decisions on this community.
Both Charlie and Sean captured my interest from the start. They are both flawed but highly likable.
As they begin spending time together they recognize their past and the mistakes they made. It's pretty clear who did the leaving and how that felt like an all out rejection, but there's family history and secrets that must be shared before either can move forward, together or separately. One thing I really liked about this story was how honest and real it felt. When we are in Sean's head, we feel the conflict he has over Charlie just being around, his natural draw to her. But Sean has a hard time letting go of the past. As for Charlie, she has every intention of returning to her real life after she and her sister complete the sale of their summer cottage so she tries to keep her distance. One thing she does really well is keeping her guard up. I felt equally sympathetic for both of them but it's clear neither plan to take their re-connection further. It's definitely got a shelf life neither want to expand on. Plus as secrets start to get out, they find there is much more to contemplate and to hang onto. But ultimately, this is a story about forgiveness and leaving the past behind.
Obviously since this is a debut, this is the first book by Jen Gilroy that I've read. I do plan on reading the follow-up to this so that tells you that I really enjoyed the writing and all the characters. I found myself invested in Charlie's sisters family, her sister Mia and her niece Naomi greatly influence Charlie's life. As well, Seans' son Ty and his interactions with Naomi added another level to the dynamics. All in all, Gilroy weaves a delightful story and I'm happy to recommend this book!

Such a sweet love story. When I got the request to review this I was super excited because 1. I loved the blurb and 2. I was given the option of an E-book or a paperback! I love my Kindle but I truly enjoyed flipping the pages of an actual book. Ok, that has nothing to do with the story just a cute tidbit, but I digress. This second chance love story wasn't sacchrine sweet nor was it super angsty either. I was a great mix of both which made it enjoyable.
I love how stable, strong and loyal Sean is. He is the epitome of how I picture a true Alpha Male and a total turn on to read. He has the right mix of hard and soft, which makes him the perfect book husband. Charlie is a great character too. She wasn't some damsel in distress and gave what she got, but she also has this soft side to her that makes her fit so well with Sean. I love the way the author mixes in the past with the present giving us a complete story through alternating points of view. I also enjoyed the secondary characters and their parallel storylines. You can tell Charlie's sister and niece's story is going to get told very soon, and it should. The author did such a good job outlining their story within this one that once it ends, you are flipping pages to check for the next release date.
So 4.0 stars for this second chance romance!

She wasn't some damsel in distress and gave what she got, but she also has this soft side to her that makes her fit so well with Sean. I love the way the author mixes in the past with the present giving us a complete story through alternating points of view. I also enjoyed the secondary characters and their parallel storylines. You can tell Charlie's sister and niece's story is going to get told very soon, and it should. The author did such a good job outlining their story within this one that once it ends, you are flipping pages to check for the next release date.
So 4.0 stars for this second chance romance!

I'm not one to shy away from DNF'ing. But this year I promised myself to do it more often. There is absolutely no point in finishing something I'm not enjoying. Especially when I have a billion books on my ever-growing TBR.
This isn't a bad book, there's just nothing compelling me to finish it. Let's just call it dull. It's funny because it's not overly dramatic yet it is. One character has just lived through a near death experience; plus her past includes two recently dead parents, and two things from her teen years that caused her to run away from her life and boyfriend(Sean, the other MC). I mean that is way too much tragic history. It's so overdone. And that's only in 100 pages, who knows what else this girl could experience before the book ends. Add on that Charlie isn't all that likable and what am I reading this for?
Sean was fine. In fact, I probably would have liked the book more if it was just from his POV. He seems a lot more level-headed than Charlie.
There's nothing compelling me to read. The story is utterly predictable. The characters are uninteresting. The dialogue is so-so. Just dull. Very dull.

Add on that Charlie isn't all that likable and what am I reading this for?
Sean was fine. In fact, I probably would have liked the book more if it was just from his POV. He seems a lot more level-headed than Charlie.
There's nothing compelling me to read. The story is utterly predictable. The characters are uninteresting. The dialogue is so-so. Just dull. Very dull.

This was so bad that I don't even want to spend the time writing about it on my blog.
Charlie was one of the worst protagonists I've come across. Sean took so much heat for stuff he couldn't control.
The only realistic and good part about this book was the dog.

I'm a sucker for novels like like this. If you like authors like Debbie Macomber, Mary McNear, Susan Mallery etc.
This is a novel of second chances. I've been reading a lot of those lately. Sean and Charlotte had a thing back in their school days. Things have happened and they have a shot at togetherness again.
Charlotte takes a little bit of time to get used to. I've noticed lately that I've been liking the heroes more than the heroines in the romance novels I've been reading. I don't know if its a new thing, or if I've just been lucky enough to find all these books.
Part of that issues, is that the woman is more worldly or sophisticated, whereas the guy is a more small town simple fellow. So score some points for the ladies and feminism. Charlotte is definitely a go-getter, but her life is getting to her. Her family also has secrets.
Sean and Charlotte are surprisingly similar for all their obvious differences. They really belong together.
This isn't all about romance though. It is also about relationships between sisters too. Charlotte and Mia, which is what I love about these small town stories. Their relationship isn't strained, but they aren't close either. (Due to those secrets)
Then there's the side relationship with Sean's son and Mia's daughter. This is the part of the story that got a groan from me, especially near the end when they get a little too close. Uh, these are teenagers and the personalities both show don't make the relationship very possible, especially as they were only in Firefly Lake for a few weeks and because they weren't together that much. So to me, that part of the story was more than a little off.
The Cottage at Firefly Lake is Jen's debut novel and it is really a strong debut. I can't wait to follow the characters in the next book.

Are you ever able to truly let go of the past? As a teenager Charlotte Gibbs loved visiting the family cottage on Firefly Lake. While her father was distant and off having affairs, Charlotte loved the simplicity of time spent at the lake with her mother and sister. Most of all, she loved Sean Carmichael. Friends as children, they grew into teenage lovers that imagined a world together. Unfortunately, events took them in other directions.
Now eighteen years later, Charlotte is unexpectedly back. Now a war torn journalist, Charlotte is back with her sister and nieces to sell the family cottage after her mother’s death. Sean is now a divorced Dad with a teenage son who still has feelings for Charlotte. Will these two be able to resolve past differences? And will Charlotte sell the cottage to a developer who will put the Carmichael’s out of business?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a perfect light read for the car on a recent family vacation. I enjoyed that both characters had depths and issues to work through. Sean has the responsibilities of raising a son and keeping a family business together while Charlotte has her own demons from her PTSD to work though. I was intrigued by the storyline that you aren’t quite sure why the two of them broke up and I really wanted to know. As the story progressed, it pealed by the layers until the full story was told.
The Cottage at Firefly Lake is an enjoyable romance with intriguing characters and storyline. It’s the perfect light read for your summer vacation.

This book follows Charlotte Gibbs whose is back on Firefly Lake to sell her mother's cottage after her death. The girls Charlotte and Mia need the money. What Charlotte wasn't prepared for was seeing Sean her boyfriend from when she was younger.
Sean Carmichael is doing the safe thing not taking many risks and helping everyone in the family achieve their dreams but at what cost? Sean hadn't seen Charlotte in so many years after they broke up. Which left him with questions. Why Charlie left and what happened?
This book was a great love story to read which reminds me of authors like Jill Shalvis, Kristin Higgins, and many more. It brought you on a great adventure as we watch Sean and Charlie weave their way around each other seeing how they will work out their issues to get their happily every after. Can't wait to read the next book!

I realize now that throughout my reading journey, I totally forgot to update my progress... even once. Sorry, not sorry. 😉
Charlie and Sean's story ended 18 years ago when she broke his heart, her own, and carried secrets no one, let alone a fledging young adult, should have to carry by themselves. Flash forward to the present, and while the years changed them in some dramatic ways, it didn't touch those things that matter most. Can we say unfinished business? There's a lot of work to do, both physical and emotional, but if these two can get it together, bypass the hurts of yesteryear and find their rhythm, there's nothing they can't do.
A great read for your summer days or any time! Though I did want to strangle Sean a time or two (and even Charlie), they still make it a story to remember. Can't wait for the next book!
