Sylvia Bishop spent an entire childhood reading fiction, dreaming up stories and pretending. She then tried very hard to get to grips with the real world by studying politics and going in to social science research. This was a shock. Thankfully, she discovered improvised comedy at university, which allowed her to carry on making up stories for at least 30% of her waking hours.

Now she writes her stories down, preferably by lamp-light with tea. She only ever really writes the bad ones: the good ones write themselves without warning, generally when she was planning to go to bed.

Sylvia now lives in London, where she continues to work in research, and is one half of improvised comedy duo the Peablossom Cabaret. Her first book for young readers, Erica’s Elephant, was published by Scholastic in 2016, followed by The Bookshop Girl in April 2017. Sylvia’s third novel, The Secret of the Night Train, is out now.

This is a really gentle, beautifully written fairytale set in modern-day Brighton (England), with no magic involved but also zero plausibility (quite intentionally on the author's part). Seriously, if you can't suspend your disbelief about the practicality of a fully grown elephant living in a British flat, making its way up- and downstairs, etc - not to mention the MUCH larger issue of a 21st-century young girl being left alone in that flat by her uncle for over two years with just a couple hundred pounds to carry her through and neither (a) starving (b) growing out of her clothing or (c) being taken in by social services - then you won't enjoy this book at all.

Honestly, when I first tried reading it on my own, I set it down again within a chapter, because the suspension of disbelief was just too much for me despite the real beauty of the writing style. (If she'd called it a fantasy and included wizards, I could have happily ignored all the practical issues about social services, etc., but since it was set in our own world without any magic bring involved, I wanted it to make more sense.) But then I started reading it out loud to my nine-year-old...and oh, did he love it! And as I experienced it with him, I ended up genuinely loving it too.

Who cares whether or not any of it could actually happen? This book is so full of love and kindness and warmth, I can't imagine a better bedtime book to read to any young kid. I read it to my son every night just before he went to sleep, and it was never too scary to let him sleep, but he cared quite desperately about both Erica and her elephant, and I did, too. We both cheered at the ending (implausible though it too was) and ended the book with twin happy sighs and an agreement that that ending was *perfect.*

So it's highly recommended after all!

This is the ideal book when you wish for a couple of hours of charming storytelling. It is also suitable to reading aloud to a younger audience, who I imagine would be most captivated by the Elephant’s nuanced TRONKing. (I envision this should be done in many different voices to optimum effect.) :)

Erica copes with the unexpected arrival of the Elephant remarkably well. The fact that going to bed with a book is one of her coping strategies just makes her all the more endearing. The Elephant and Erica become friends soon enough, though their solution to financing his food attracts unwanted attention, but also new friends. I’m not spoiling it but I simply adored the true friend Erica and the Elephant made.

Erica’s Elephant is a sweet story; I really enjoyed this book a lot. Plus the illustrations by Ashley King are lovely and add an extra delightfulness to the story.

Lovely little book to finish in one sitting. Not a fairy tale, maybe a bit more of a tall tale that can be enjoyed by children from 7 to 77.

I've read it in Afrikaans and loved this: "die olifant is nie dom nie.

A heartfelt tale of a big adventure in a small seaside town that cleverly blends witty wordplay, fascinating facts and imaginative interpretations of the word TRONK. This story would suit a lower KS2 audience and could easily be read in a couple of weeks with a chapter a day read aloud.

Bishop plays with language so beautifully and with wonderful humour while using the character's knowledge to explain some big words and ideas like ornithologist, epilogue and compassion. There is a great deal to learn from this book without realising, and more than a few things to consider regarding stereotypes and smashing them.

I already spotted this book several months ago, but I was still unsure about it. And then I saw the book in Dutch in the bookstore. I flipped through it, and fell in love. And then my sweet boyfriend bought the English book for me as a present (Thanks love!), and it arrived a few days ago.

This story is magnificent, so much fun, such a delight, a feast, and I laughed so much. There are good characters, there are baddies, an absent uncle, and then there is an elephant. You can imagine that having an elephant isn't something easy, but Erica did her best when she found him on the doorstop as a present from her absent uncle. She didn't have much money left, and elephants do need more food than humans ever do, but she found a way to make money by using the Elephant and his skills.

But that is not the place where this book ends, oh no. The book starts off all sweet (though I also have to say bitter, considering Erica's situation, the fact she never went to school, that her uncle just left her), but then takes a turn when someone reports the elephant and stuff goes wrong.
I was quite frustrated with that Avis woman. My Lord woman, no reason to be such a doodoo-head about stuff. I hated how she treated the elephant, how she treated Erica.

The rollercoaster ride that happens after that was so much fun, though also exciting. Would Erica be able to keep her elephant? Or would she lose him? Would she be alone again?

My biggest surprise character would be Erica's neighbour. I disliked the old bat at the beginning, but then I saw something different, and she quickly turned to be my favourite character. She was so sweet, but also so kick-ass. Even with her age she wasn't about to let people just walk over her, oh no. I loved her ant collection, it definitely was an interesting addition to the character.

Erica's situation was a bit weird for me + the fact of the elephant, so I tagged this one as octarine (magical). There is just no way that a kid can stay at home, alone, without going to school for 2 years. That is just not possible. There are laws, inspectors and much more. Plus that elephant just being able to pander around in the house without floors breaking, or stairs, it was just amazing.

But even with that happening, I still loved the nonsensicalness of it all.

The epilogue was definitely fun, and I am happy it was added. I do feel a bit sad that it ended like that, but I think it was better for all the characters in the end. Though I would have loved to see her meeting x again.

There are also illustrations all through the books, and I have to say that I like the style, it looks a bit simplistic, but still very pretty.

Would I recommend this book? Oh yes I would. It has everything that one would want in a book. Hilarious situations, elephants (who doesn't love them), baddies that need to be defeated, a great, brave character. Lovely illustrations. Gee, what more would you like?

When the lovely Faye got in touch about the blog tour for Erica’s Elephant, I couldn’t have signed up faster! From the second I saw the cover of the book I knew I was going to love it.
Erica’s Elephant tells the story of Erica Perkins who one morning wakes up to find an elephant on her doorstep. Quite a surreal experience for most I would imagine…however Erica takes it her stride and befriends the elephant; she even allows it to live in her house with her.
Erica and the elephant seem to get on splendidly but it seems someone wants Erica’s elephant for themselves and they’ll stop at nothing to get it…
Sylvia’s story paired with Ashley’s illustrations make Erica’s Elephant a total delight to read. Aimed at six to eight year olds, the book has the perfect sense of adventure, peril, and good triumphing over evil. Everything you want in a children’s book! It’s the perfect story to read aloud at bedtime and will keep children engrossed as they listen to Erica’s adventure with her new friend! It would also be a great book for a child to read aloud as I’m sure they’d relish the chance to make elephant noises!
Ashley’s illustrations really complete the book. It’s his illustration debut and I’m sure it won’t be his last! The pictures are bold, detailed and in some cases incredibly astute. I really enjoyed taking the time to look closely at them and look at the artistry gone into creating them…I wish I could draw!
The book itself is a beautiful hardcover that sits proudly on a bookshelf and would be a total treat for any child. I can’t wait to see what Sylvia creates next and I hope to see Ashley’s illustrations again soon.
A lovely children’s book about the friendship between a girl and an elephant that will put a smile on anyone’s face. Brilliant!

Erica's Elephant was one of the most charming and adorable stories I have ever come across. I read the first page to get an idea of what it was like and the next thing I had read it in one sitting. This is the story (as the title suggests) of Erica and her Elephant. Erica lives on her own while her Uncle travels around the world. On the morning of her tenth birthday she finds a very confused elephant on her doorstep, she feels sorry for him and invites him inside and unlikely but beautiful friendship evolves.

Erica's Elephant was one of those books that despite being a children's book, managed to be so on point with the way the world works, and that when you actually look at it at a different angle, you realise that sometimes the world can be a pretty silly place with its rules and regulations.

The elephant really is the star of this story though with his simply adorable mannerisms and his relationship with Erica. I wanted to be friends with Erica and her Elephant as their friendship is really something else. It also takes a look at how you can't always judge people by their appearances and not to make snap decisions about a person until you know all the details.

I want ALL children (and adults) to read this book, despite a slight melancholy undertone, Erica's Elephant is very uplifting and it managed to touch a little place in my heart. I think people of all ages will take a little something away from this adorable story.

Adorable, charming and uplifting, one of my favourite books this year. Sylvia Bishop is one to watch!

Gentle funny story about friendship, unlikely allies and people who are not what they seem. There is the plot issue of an elephant living in a small terrace English house and a young girl living on her own for two years. However, the writing is very funny, the observations and the gentle way in which all is revealed make this a great read for younger primary.

This is such a brilliant book. My daughter loves elephants so this is perfect for her!

The story is about a little girl called Erica who wakes up on the morning of her tenth birthday to find an elephant sitting on her doorstep. From here the loveliest friendship develops between them.

Erica has been left to live alone by her uncle who has gone off travelling to look for a bird called a Lesser Pip Footed Woob! Poor Erica only has £32.50 left to spend so she is worried she won't be able to afford enough cabbages to feed him!

It doesn't take long for them to become friends and it's clear Erica won't want to lose him. Erica is very practical and resourceful so she finds ways to solve any problems looking after a giant elephant in a small terraced house might bring her!

This story had both me and my six year old daughter hooked from the very start. We were laughing along with Erica and the funny situations they found themselves in. Such a cleverly written book and brilliant for early readers. There are also fantastic black and white illustrations throughout the book as well which really capture the lovely friendship between Erica and her elephant. I would definitely recommend this book!

When an Elephant turns up on ten year old Ella's doorstep, she faces the challenge of feeding herself and the elephant with the last of the money her uncle left her before he went off exploring.

The elephant has a bad knee too whilst word gets around people in their town start to come and pay to see or have a ride. As well as legal ownership issues that arise and cause Erica to find that the elephant may just want to choose his own home...

Complete with illustrations that will win over kids hearts as they read the illuminating story sure to light up their hearts.

A lovely fun book that is too good to be true in real life unfortunately else I'd be at the front of the queue for an elephant as a pet!

Lovely book, its perfect for junior novel readers and even older kids. This book was really good and beautiful, Sylvia Bishop has an awesome imagination.

This book is about Erica, finding an elephant on her doorstep. At first, the two were... not the best match, but after a few days, they became best friends. So when someone plots to steal the elephant, Erica puts on her big girl pants and comes up with a ridiculous plan to save the elephant.

I loved this book so much because of the beautiful illustrations (Ashley King did a VERY good job to make the elephant cute), and the sudden plot twist. I reccomend this book for kids ages 6-12 or maybe even 13? In summary, I might consider asking for a pet elephant on my next birthday :D
