A concise but important read. With the help of Quranic ayaat and Prophetic traditions, the writer highlights the acts that a person must perform in order to come closer to Allah. Among the actions that he suggests a great emphasis has been laid upon remembering one's death, and the accountability in the Hereafter. He gives examples of the Companions of the Prophet to make us realize how they lived their lives and what issues caused them to weep. None of which were worldly matters. All of them had a great concern for the Hereafter and the questioning of that Day. They feared not having done while we know from history they accomplished much more than we can ever imagine.
A recommended read of course, one that should go on every Muslim's bookshelf!

'Abdul A'laa al-Taymee, said ''Whoever is given knowledge that doesn't make him weep, then clearly he has not been given knowledge that benefits, because Allah, the Most High, has described the knowledgeable by saying: ''Believe in it or do not believe in it. Verily those who were given knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, fall down on their faces in humble prostration, and they say: ''Glory be to our Lord! Truly the promise of our Lord must be fulfilled. And they fall down on their faces weeping, and it adds to their humility.'' (17:107 - 17:109)
''Those were ˹some of˺ the prophets who Allah has blessed from among the descendants of Adam, and of those We carried with Noah ˹in the Ark˺, and of the descendants of Abraham and Isra'il, and of those We ˹rightly˺ guided and chose. Whenever the revelations of the Most Compassionate were recited to them, they fell down, prostrating and weeping.'' (19:58)
On the authority of 'Uqbah ibn 'Aamir (radiyallaahu 'anhu) who asked: 'I said, ''O Messenger of Allah! What is salvation?'' He replied: ''To have control over your tongue, be content with your house and to weep over your errors.''
The weeping of 'Umar (radiyallaahu 'anhu) ) could be heard from the last rows, as it has been reported to us by 'Abdullah ibn Shaddâd, who said, "I heard the sobbing of 'Umar from the last rows while he was reciting the verse from the Qur’an: "I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah". (12:86)
On the authority of Usamah ibn Zayd (radiyallaahu 'anhu): ''One of the daughters of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a messenger calling for him and telling him that her child or son was on the verge of death. The Prophet said to the messenger, “Return to her and tell her that it is for Allah Almighty to take and to give, for all things have an appointed term with Him. Enjoin her to be patient and hope for reward from Allah.” She sent the messenger again, swearing by Allah that he must come. When the child was presented to him, he made a groaning noise as if he was breathing his last breath. The Prophet’s eyes were over flowed with tears. Sa’d said, “What is this, O Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet said, “This is mercy which Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants. Verily, Allah shows mercy to those of His servants who are.”
On the authority of Anas, who said: 'Abu Bakr said to 'Umar, after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): ''Let us go and visit Umm Aiman, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit her'' When they finished visiting her (and were about to leave) she began to cry. So they asked her: ''What is it that makes you cry? Is not that which is with Allah better for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?'' So she replied ''I am not crying because I am unaware about that which is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but I am crying because the revelation from the heavens has stopped.'' This moved them to tears, so they both began to weep with her.'
