Pen name for author Alexa Aston

As a child, Lauren Linwood gathered her neighborhood friends together and made up stories for them to act out, her first venture into creating memorable characters. Following her passion for history and love of learning, she became a teacher who began writing on the side to maintain her sanity in a sea of teenage hormones.

Lauren’s historical novels focus on two of her favorite eras—medieval times and the American Old West. History is the backdrop that places her characters in extraordinary circumstances, where their intense desire and yearning for one another grows into the treasured gift of love. She also writes romantic suspense, where modern heroes and heroines unite to defeat a strong antagonist and discover a deep, abiding love during their journey.

Lauren, a native Texan, lives in a Dallas suburb with her family. An avid reader, moviegoer, and sports fan, she manages stress by alternating yoga with five mile walks. She is thinking about starting a support group for House Hunters addicts—as soon as she finishes her next piece of dark chocolate.

I liked the book, though last night, when I was reading it, I felt a little bored, which was weird because what was going on in the book would be deemed "exciting". Either I was bored or I was tired. It was pretty late...

The romance felt a lot like insta-love to me, even though it wasn't.
41% of the way through: "Beatrice could never live that way. Starving would be preferable over having another piece of her die each day as she watched the man she loved make a new life with another woman."
I wrote in my Kindle notes, "you barely know him, chill." It did seem especially dramatic to me.

Then, at 61%: “I am flattered you think so. You sound as if you know me well when we’ve only shared a handful of conversations.” That's what I was saying!! Even the heroine Beatrice is like you barely know me. How are they in love with each other? Lol, I sound so cynical.

Beatrice also really frustrated me with the "Big Lie", aka that she was betrothed to Sir Henry's grandson. This created unnecessary conflict in my opinion and was just annoying. I can understand her telling the lie when she first met Raynor to protect herself, but then when they got to know each other more, she should have said, "Hey, sorry, you know I lied; I'm not really betrothed." And that would have been okay. However, she let Raynor believe the falsehood for so long, when that was stopping him from kissing her, from spending time in her company, etc.--all things that she wanted. It was honestly just self-sabotage at a certain point. And then when Raynor finally found out the truth, he was mad for a second, and then he was like it doesn't matter, I'm so in love with you, I don't care.

Also, at one point, I actually wanted the villain to get the girl (Beatrice)!!! 🤡🤡🤡 Unlike the author, I hope he actually finds a woman who's good for him that cares for him (and one that he doesn't have to forcibly wed or rape). I don't think the author's purpose was to garner sympathy for the villain. He wasn't a good man by any stretch of the imagination, but he definitely wasn't evil as Beatrice declared.

I thought there wasn't going to be any sex scenes, because we were nearing the end of the book without one, but there was one at 75%.

Alexa Aston’s Marked by Honor (Knights of Honor #2) is a medieval romance that illustrates all the knowledge the wife of a man of property must have in order to run the domestic establishment owned by such a man. It also includes all the work and responsibility a man in this position must have. Ms. Aston also includes the code of honor by which a knight must live. Meet Lady Beatrice and Sir Raynor and enjoy their romance even though there are some rough spots, of course! A delightful change for me! 41/4 stars.

I really enjoyed this story. I loved Sir Raynor Le Roux from book one and I felt really bad for him because he was a very good man who got his heart broken. I am glad he has his own story now.

It is time for Sir Raynor Le Roux to go home. He has been informed he is needed back at his family's holding. He also needs to put his mid resent past behind him. As he makes his way back he comes across a very violent scene. A woman screaming, a fire and dead bodies. He must help her.

Lady Beatrice Bordel is an extraordinary heroine who has endured too much tragedy in her life. Her father died when she was five years old and now 27 years later tragedy strikes again. She tries to cash in on an opportunity to start a new life for herself. On her way to her new destination, with a loyal servant, another tragedy strikes her. A knight comes to her rescue and he offers to help her reach her destination once he can address things at his holding. She agrees to accompany him.

This is a truly wonderful story. I hope the next book in this series comes out quickly.

While not as good as the first in the series, this second installment was still entertaining and intriguing. This is Raynor's story, who we meet in book one. He was an appealing character and I was glad to know more about him. Beatrice had some character flaws, but overall I hoped she would get her happy ending. Looking forward to the next book with hopes that it doesn't involve the dungeon.

Simply a lovely read with protagonists full of strength and honor, although each have difficulties to overcome. It is fast-paced, with richly textured scenes, easily followed, moving the story forward in an energetic way where I didn’t lose interest in either the events or the characters.
Beatrice plunges into a new beginning, not knowing where it will take her. After losing both her mother and grandfather on the same day, and losing her home and mother's pearl necklace to a greedy landlord, she has little choice but to follow the plan her grandfather had for her—a journey to Brookhaven where her grandfather’s friend might help her find her way.

On the road with all her worldly possessions, she and Tolly come upon something in the middle of the road.

Excerpt:
“What’s that?” Tolly asked, surprise in his voice.

Beatrice turned to look at the road and saw a dark shape in the middle of their path. With dusk falling, though, she couldn’t make out what the obstacle might be.

Tolly slowed the cart and leaned over to pick up the lantern. He stood and held it high.
“It’s a man. I must see to him.” The servant eased himself down from the driver’s seat and reached for the lantern to guide his way.

She climbed down from the cart, as well. If the man was injured or ill, she could help.
They approached the still figure. Beatrice checked his body, finding no apparent wounds. Perhaps a weak heart had caused his collapse.
******

Unfortunately, the man in the road was not only uninjured but was a highwayman, with another in the hidden in forest.

Excerpt:

She watched in horror as Tolly’s eyes widened in surprise. He howled in pain and fell back as his hands grabbed for the buried dagger. As the stranger sat up, Beatrice ran back to the cart, the lantern swinging wildly at her side. Tolly kept an ax in the cart which he used to chop wood. She would threaten this man with it.

But as she set the lantern in the cart and reached for the ax, she found a second man waiting in the bed. He’d already opened her trunk and was rifling through it, tossing clothes and books aside. A book hit the lantern and knocked it over, spilling oil everywhere. The clothes scattered in the bed of the wagon caught fire.

******

This scene is very nerve wracking and shows the stuff that Beatrice is made of. Even so, if it hadn’t been for Sir Raynor happening above the scene, the story would have been much different.

When Raynor stumbles upon a woman defending herself furiously in the road, he quickly dispatches justice, with thoughts of respect in her ability to handle these ruffians. He cannot leave the woman alone, with her servant dead, so takes her to Ashcroft. Beatrice is very quick to protect herself. She quickly tells him she is on her way to her betrothed at Brookhaven. As expected, this places limits on Sir Raynor thoughts and actions. But such a small lie seems to grow wings and gives Beatrice second thoughts and problems.

Nothing is lacking in Sir Raynor Le Roux. He’s a solid, fair man, honorable and kind. Once back at Ashcroft, he sees how his brother, Peter, has let the property deteriorate. He feels guilt, leaving his home for so many years, therefore decides to bring Ashcroft back to rights. But has he waited too long to be home, to support his brother, Peter?

I enjoyed how Beatrice pitches in to help get the manor back in shape. In the process, she gains self-esteem, and gains respect from the servants while catching Sir Raynor’s eye for not only is she kind, intelligent and a beauty. So bottom line: Can Sir Raynor let Beatrice go to her betrothed in Brookhaven, after capturing his heart? Does he even know how much he is trapped by the person she is and her beauty?

I’ve enjoyed the first two books of his series. This book can be read as a standalone, but it is very enjoyable knowing the backstory of Sir Raynor Le Roux which lies in book one, Word of Honor.

review

This story takes place in England in the year 1363.

Be prepared to have your heart broken in the first few chapters of this book. I tell ya, the author has a tendency to do that to a reader. Book 1 was like that and this was not any different. Her characters are put through the ringer with tragedies and heartbreak. But there is always a silver lining. She just makes her characters work for it.

Beatrice loses everything and basically has the worst day of her life. I found myself cringing and dismayed because of what she went through. I didn’t know if she could sink any lower. But she suffers like that so she can meet her knight in shining armor...well maybe non shining armor...okay, he wasn’t wearing armor, but he was still a chivalrous knight full of honor and exuding sexiness. Beatrice may have also fallen in love at first sight as well, but given the day she had, I don’t blame her. She finds herself compounding a single lie that was necessary at first, but then hinders her decisions and causes her to potentially lose said knight in the future.

“It frightened her that these lies would catch up to her and result in disaster.”

Raynor, our knight, who is marked by honor and is willing to offer Beatrice a respite in her travels, finds himself falling in love with a woman who is (supposedly) promised to another. It is his honor that prevents him to act upon it, and instead focuses on making his home a place to live again since his brother has neglected the keep and his duties. It was refreshing to find a hero, a knight, pray in this story. Knights did serve God and King, but rarely does the character actively pray in a story.

“He prayed for strength in body and in character. He renewed his vow to serve the king, protect all women, and be an instrument of the Church.”

This by no means detracted from the story and I liked that such a man could have compassion for all the things and passion when the time called for it. It made for a realistic character.

Speaking of passion...there were also some really steamy scenes in this story especially when Raynor teaches Beatrice self defense. Such tense sexual energy was so hot that my kindle fog up.

This story can be read as a standalone, but there is a connection between stories. It would help to read Book 1 (Word of Honor) when you get the chance.

Marked by Honor by Lauren Linwood #2 in the "Knights of Valor",but can be read as a stand alone. An interesting tale. Not quite as exciting as Book 1, but a very satisfying read. The hero is the cousin of Geoffrey, in Book one.
Tragedy, danger, secrets, a bit of mystery, a touch of suspense, add a splash of passion, and a sweet romance, makes for an interesting read.
The H/H are strong-willed, independent, honorable, duty bound characters, the reader will find themselves, lost in an engrossing story.
The storyline is unique, makes for a sweet romance, however, most of the danger is toward the end of the book. Which, is awe-worthy. An enjoyable and satisfying read! I look forward Book 3. A great read and one I would suggest reading. Who doesn't enjoy Knights, honorable cast of characters, a few despicable characters, and a sweet historical romance.

We were introduced to Raynor in the first book. He is cousin’s to Geoffrey but also had fallen in love with Geoffrey’s wife Merryn. Broken hearted he’s headed home where he is needed most. On his way he meets Beatrice and saves her from some highway men. Little did he know she would capture his heart and never let it go. I really like these two together. They have an insta-attraction that sparks into love half way through the story. I really felt for them as well, especially Beatrice. She had lost so much but still had the courage and strength to move on. It was pretty cool. However I didn’t really care for the Lie she told and how it kept escalating especially at the end. But overall I really enjoyed this book and cant wait to move onto the next, which i’ll do now.

Happy Reading 🤓

I must admit I dislike immensely stories that are based on lies. Even later when we are told why she lied, it still didn't help. The ending saved it from 3 stars, because of so many twists, surprises and suspense. I also, thought our H forgave her too easily.

This story has character's from book 1 WORD OF HONOR, which we discover about chapter 3. At the end of the first book, we jumped I think it was 8 years. But, in this one, we go back 8 years so was interesting.

There is mild passionate lovemaking within marriage a few times. We do get HEA, no cliffhanger, and an epilogue that is 20 years in the future which was nice. I did enjoy book 1 more, but this is still good. (ljb)

Fantastic Story!

In this second book in the Knights of HOnor series we hear the tale of Geoffrey's cousin Raynor and his one true love Beatrice. During the seven years Geoffrey had been imprisoned, Raynor had watched over Merryn and his cousins children. He had fallen in love with his cousin-in-law. Upon Geoffrey's return, Raynor leaves for home, knowing he had no place with Merryn. On the journey home he rescues a damsel in distress and falls in love with her. Wonderful, satisfying story.

Beatrice & Raynor Le Roux. You can tell this was an older book written by Alexa Aston because it doesn't have the same level of steaminess that her newer books have. The story wasn't bad. When she's 5 her father dies when his horse stumbles and sends him and her flying off the horse. He broke his neck and she developed a fear of horses. Heartbroken he mother moves them into the house with her dad and becomes useless/confined to her bed. Her grandfather knows he doesn't have a long time left and writes his old friend Sir Henry to try and arrange a marriage for her (protecting her after he passes away). They plan to visit Sir Henry but both her mother (gave up will to live) and grandfather (heart attack) die the same day leaving her alone in the world with Tolly a trusted family servant. He escorts her to Sir Henry's home but along the way they are attacked by highway men. Tolly is killed leaving her to fend for herself against 3 highway men. A fire starts in their cart and one of the men catches on fire. She kills another one with an axe to his neck. The third one was about to attack but Raynor (who has been summoned back home after being gone for many years) shows up and kills the 3rd man. To protect herself, she tells him that she is engaged knowing that he wouldn't do anything untoward because he is a knight and has honor. He takes her to his home. When they arrive, they find his older brother who is the baron has slacked on his duty to the estate (his wife and child died and he went into a severe depression and didn't care about anything anymore). Raynor was summoned home to fix everything. He tells her that he needs to stay for a while at Ashcroft and get the harvest done, soldiers back in condition, and in general fix everything that had been left unkept. Wanting to be useful and having no where else to go, she offers to manage the domestic side and clean up the keep while he focuses on the harvest and everything else. He sees her one day cleaning (beating out some tapestries that were covered in dust) and tells her that she's supposed to direct the staff and not participate. She disagrees and they take their argument to the office so as not to argue in front of the staff. They end up kissing because he's had the feels for her but he stops because he knows she's betrothed to another. While cleaning the keep, she is touring the various rooms to see what needed to be cleaned. She meets his brother and calls him out for his behavior and slacking in his duties. He tells her she was exactly what he needed to get out of the funk and wants to marry her. She tells him she's engaged. After a few weeks, she asks him to teach her how to defend herself so she isn't helpless in the future. They are in a side room (he didn't want to train her in the yard because she would be distracting). They end up kissing again and when he goes to stop it she continues kissing and they get hot and heavy. But he stops it and realizes he has no self-control when around her and tells her they should avoid each other. They spend a couple of months cleaning up the estate and getting the harvest done so he escorts her to Sir Henry's estate. When they arrive, they find that Sir Henry also had a heart attack a six weeks prior and wasn't doing well. His son had been partially paralyzed for years and couldn't take care of himself. The grandson, Edwin, left the estate, not wanting to be around death, but returns after his father passes away. He encounters Beatrice, thinking she was his betrothed but his actual betrothed and her dad show up. Edwin is a really scumbag. While in front of his betrothed he tells her that he plans on keeping her as his mistress so he can have his needs met when his new wife cannot take care of him. Hearing this, her dad is pissed and breaks their betrothal contract. Edwin plans to marry Beatrice instead. Raynor decides to marry her. They love each other and they both can see Edwin isn't stable. They marry at midnight and consummate their marriage. Then next morning they plan to leave and as he's leaving her room he is taken to the dungeon to be held until after Edwin marries Beatrice (he didn't want him around as a temptation). She finds out he's being held but is guarded. Edwin attacks her and she defends herself in a badass manner she learned from Raynor. She takes his horse and chases after a messenger sent from Ashcroft (informing Raynor that his brother has given up being the Baron of Ashcroft and is going to a monastery). Realizing they need more help the messenger and Beatrice take off but run into Sir Thomas (Raynor and Beatrice encounter him in an inn they stayed at the night before they arrived at Sir Henry's home) and her uncle the Earl of Lovet. When her dad (Lovet's brother) passed away her mother had left her husband's home. The Earl had been looking for years for her after they disappeared. Sir Thomas recognized her and rushed to the Earl of Lovet to let him know where she was headed and they were on their way to meet her. She tells him that Raynor (her husband) is being held prisoner and it seems that the Earl of Lovet is a pretty well known powerful man. He is able to get Edwin to release Raynor pretty easily. They return to Ashcroft and take up their places as the new baron and baroness. Not bad but not my favorite work from this author.

Bound by Honor

I enjoyed reading this book. You meet Raynor in first book but now he is heading home. On his way home he helps Lady Beatrice as she is fighting a bandit. A little white lie that she tells Raynor almost keeps them from a love that they have for each other.

Why the lie

Beatrice has led a sheltered life caring for her mother and grandfather! On his deathbed her grandfather received a letter that would set into motion many events that would free Beatrice but snare all at the same time! A evil landlord after their deaths take a prized possession!
Lord Raynor from the previous story served the castle and Lady Merrick and her twins for years and neglected the estate that would be his heritage as his brother the Baron sunk further into grief! When Lord Raynor returns home he sees this brave tiny young woman fighting off robbers! He jumps in the fray and is told she was on her way to meet her betrothed but her servant was killed and fire burned all she had except a flute and coins sown in her clothing! Lord Raynor only knows of the flute and his immediate attraction for this beautiful woman!
Beatrice accompanies Lord Raynor and they find complete disorder and disarray! Beatrice is trained in household management and is wonderful help to restore order to the estate! Lord Raynor is smitten but must abide by the code of honor of a knight to not touch another mans betrothed!
This is the reason for 4.5 and not 5 stars...several times Beatrice had a chance to confess to Lord Raynor the truth she did not! When they journeyed to her betrothed her lie was revealed and almost cost Lord Raynor his life!
Can they have a HEA when they entered the enemy came of a spoiled 18 year old sniveling man child who rules with pain and pride! This man child has decided he wants Beatrice when she has already set another series of events in motion!!!

Marked by Honor

The ending saved this book for me. I almost stopped reading several times. I was already annoyed with Raynor’s borderline obsession with his cousin/best friend’s wife in the previous book. I felt like it was given too much attention at the beginning of this story. Finally, he met someone new, but she lied about being betrothed. Once she realized she cared for him, she kept lying instead of just telling him the truth. She waited until the lies all exploded which led to them being in a dangerous situation. It was too much to believe that everywhere she went someone wanted her for themselves. First, Raynor’s brother felt she could change his life, and she actually acted like she was considering his offer when she loved his brother. That was extremely annoying to me. Then, Stollers wanted to force himself upon her and make her marry him even though she was already secretly married to Raynor the night before. I’m just glad that things ended well with her finding family that helped save Raynor from captivity so they could be together.

Well written. It reminds is good has been fighting evil for a long time and we must choose our course wisely.

I really like series books. You can tell Alexa doesn't forget her characters. I enjoy reading books that show the history and advancement the civilizations have made. She never forgets The power of Love and how it can change tradition.

Well written. Characters are amazing and enjoyable. I had a hard time putting it down! Alexa Aston keeps you stuck to the story she writes right from the start. The Hero is one you meet in the first book of the series and you feel for him. Here he meet the Heroine on the road and offers her protection.

DNF. Couldn't get pass the 1st few chapters. Didn't like the author's writing much or the fact that the heroine lied quite heavily (when they could have many ways to handle the issue). Massive lies, not small white lies.
