Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

Asahi was a little girl happily living with her parents in modern times until she's pulled through a pond and wakes up in feudal Japan. It's now been some years and Asahi has grown into a lovely young woman under the protection of the local water dragon god, the young man she befriended whose village she lives in, Subaru and Tsukihiko, the priest teaching her the duties of a priestess.

As you can see this volume didn't get a perfect score... as the pacing of the plot was rushed... It didn't bother me too much but it was a flaw. (Scared you there didn't I?! Don't worry Rei Toma is super good!) The beauty of the plot is how it includes all of the secondary characters around Asahi and how she influences them and in turn how they try to improve her life stuck back in historic Japan! While I would have loved to see more development about how Tsukihiko's experiences with the other traveler effect Asahi's thoughts about being stuck there long enough to be married I do appreciate his efforts in trying to preserve her life...

I do really LOVE the role each man plays in Asahi's life... I appreciated how Subaru is going off on this tangent with Matori the captain of the Emperor's guards and getting to see his growth as Asahi's human protector. And, of course, I'm ALL IN seeing the water dragon god soften toward Asahi and I ADORE how Subaru is part of teaching the WDG... So often it is due to another person's reaction that we realize that we have feelings about the same thing! The inclusion of the sex festival was too funny and yet provided a fun little illustration of how each man is involved with Asahi.

The art was gorgeous as ever... In particular I need to pick me up a paper version of this volume so I can see the expression shots in their full glory!! GAH!! The character art sucks you into this story... I know I say it a lot but the illustrations are why I'm here... The dialogue is not bubble filled because the art SPEAKS and says so, so much WITHOUT words! No other manga I read uses the art so well to express the underlying emotion and connection between character... I know, high praise but so, so true!

The best thing is the tension builds to a feverish pitch!! I was so glad to meet Matori and see Subaru take to him and his ways. Life is changing for Asahi and her men but they are taking it in stride and actually they are growing and choosing a direction to move forward in. The reader was made aware of a conspiracy against the Emperor who wants to marry Asahi and so now we know the opposition against our characters is double fold!! And they are a clever pair...

The plot is a tad rushed in this volume but it sure built the tension to a fevered pitch! I totally root for Asahi, the water dragon god, Subaru and Tsukihiko and will follow them into the plot filled world of the Emperor and his captain, Matori! You won't want to miss out on meeting the new character!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⋆⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

BOTTOM LINE: Super EXCITED to head into volume six and see Asahi, the water dragon god, Subaru and Tsukihiko get through their trials!!

Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. This has not influenced my opinion.

This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

I don't know! I think I wanted just a little bit more from this volume. It was interesting to see the water dragon begin to process his feelings, but outside of that, I think that parts of this story fell flat. I also didn't really appreciate the way an attempted sexual assault was handled. Ya'll know I love Rei Toma downnnnn, but I need to feel out the rest of this series.

I forgot I had a hold on this at the library, so I thought I'd give the series one more go. And I'm definitely done with it now. It's just too dull for me as the story doubles down on the lackluster political machinations of the fantasy world and continues to insist that the Water God is a viable love interest instead of the cold fish he is. There's just no spark in the characters or story to draw me in.

🌊💦💧The Water Dragon's Bride Vol 4💧💦🌊
3.5 Stars
Asahi is invited to A Festival of Love, which turns out to have a different purpose than she expects. The Water Dragon's Bride is starting to feel affection towards Asahi and is bewildered by these new feelings. Meanwhile, Lord Kogahiko is plotting against Asahi along with a woman who desires to spite the gods. Matori, a man who is more intelligent than he first lets on, takes Subaru under his wing to train.

The plot in this volume felt more rushed than previous ones. I didn't enjoy this plotline as much as the other ones, it felt a lot like recycled plot lines from Rei Toma's other manga. That being said, I was still invested in the characters, which kept me reading. Asahi is a character I like, but I feel like she is slowly starting to grow more submissive towards The Water Dragon god and becoming less capable of her own rescue. That being said, there is a lot to appreciate looking past her flaws.

A certain plot line between a character and Asahi felt rather worthless other than stirring up jealousy between the male characters. Tsukihiko is a character I wish had more time in the story. He is an amazing mentor figure, caring, and brave. Matori was an interesting character although he hasn't really added to the plot at all. Subaru and The Water Dragon god clash in this book over their emotions. I feel as though The Water Dragon god still seems indifferent towards Asahi and only seems to sometimes care about her and steps in only to make it seem more like an inconvenience.

I hope that there will be a more profound/emotional aspect to his character along with a back-story. No matter how long I try to like his character, because it is prevalent in the story, I am unable to find qualities that I appreciate or like. Asahi is a joyful and fun character who continues to work towards her goals despite tragedy.

Interested to see where and how this will influence the direction of volume 6.

Ugh! So good! That scene with the flower was absolutely stunning!

The authors art just keeps becoming more beautiful

I'm really invested in the story at this point, and find myself wanting to read the rest of it and not read anymore so that it lasts forever all at the same time

3.5

Hard to decide what to rate this volume, not sure if to give it a 3 or 4 star rating.

I feel like the story has gotten better and I continue to really like Asahi. Girl is so strong. I don't necessarily want to say I could never, but her strength is definitley something to strive for. She's not physically strong or really have any real skill set. Yet, her strength is in how kind she has remained despite all she has endured. And how despite everything she continues to smile and try to be happy. Afterall, like she herself says what humans really want is to laugh and be happy. Thus, Asahi has accepted that she probably will never be able to return home no matter how much she misses her mother and father. Still, she hoped she could remain in Sabaru's village and be happy.

Unfortunately, seeing as word has spread about her power and divine protection as the water priestess many others and villages covet that power for their own, despite Asahi herself truly not having any real power. Due to this Asahi has to leave for the village of the boy king she had met in previous volume. As king he may have the power to protect her. Thus, she along with Sabaru who wants to go with her, arrive in the village.

Before this though, it is revealed that her attendant, Tsukiho, is an outsider who asked to attend Asahi. The reason being that he essentially wanted to be close to her. It is revealed his mother is the doctor who like Asahi was from a far away world she longed to return to, a world Tsukiho would probably never know. With tears falling he explains how he thought his mother probably viewed him as a burden, but Asahi tells him of humans simply wanting to be happy and she herself accepting her fate of likely never going home. So she tells him surely her mother felt the same way. In the end, Tsukiho stays in the village to protect it when Asahi and Sabaru leave.

Once in the village, or rather I guess, country of the boy king. He states he wishes for Asahi to be his wife. She asks for time to think about it and turns to the Water God to see if he was angry about the situation. The Water God questions why he should care for trifling human affairs. If Asahi agrees with it it would be for the benefit of both parties (Asahi gaining protection and the boy king getting a wife or something). Asahi decides she would accept then.

However, as she spends time with the boy king, patting his head and holding his hand without thinking and then the boy king asking Asahi to go for a walk; it starts raining, thus, calling the walk off. Asahi asks the Water God to examine his own feelings to see if he was not actually jealous or angry.

Meanwhile, Sabaru is asked by the boy king to train under the leader of his security team. The man appears to simply be a drunkard always drinking in the corner of the tavern and having Sabrau complete chores while he sleeps. However, Subaru realizes where the man sits lets him see he comes and goes and he can listen to the conversations going around. And so determined to get stronger to protect Asahi, Subaru will be trained by the security leader.

During all this, it is shown that the man who had previously attacked Asahi and Sabaru in previous volumes is in the country they are in, as the man and priestess we had previously seen plot to get rid of the boy king and put the man as king instead. The man also still wants the power of the water priestess.

And so, the volume ends with the Water God placing Asahi on his lap as he searches for and I think realizes or tries to what his feelings are all the while Asahi blushes.

Overall, this volume was quite enjoyable. I mean what can I say. I'm surprised by how relatable Asahi has become. Again, she is so strong. I actually really like it :'D

I still, think I prefer Asahi with the Water God, but I also feel sad for Saburu who obviously loves Asahi and who protects her so fiercely and would give up everything for her. He truly does love her and even thinks that if the Water God can't love Asahi then the Water God should let her go. Then there's also the conflicting feeling in me who wants to see Asahi return home to her parents, but also ship lol. Ahhh, I want them all to be happy :'D

I look forward to the next volume!

Today’s post is on The Water Dragon's Bride, Vol. 5 by Rei Toma. It is 184 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has Asahi and Tsukihiro on it. As it is the fifth in the series you need to have read the first four volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes shojo manga and Japanese legends. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of Asahi. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- Asahi is in danger because people want to use her to get the water dragon god’s power. She doesn’t want anyone to be hurt because of her, so she goes with the water dragon god and Subaru to pay a visit to the emperor. However, in exchange for his protection, the emperor makes an unexpected demand!

Review- Asahi’s fame is growing and she is making some very hard choices. Real bad guys are aware of her existence and that she really seems to have some kind of magic powers. So Asahi returns to the emperor and asks for his protection. The court is not much safer for her but her friends are learning new skills that will help protect her better and the water god is starting to grow as a person more. His changes are slow but that makes it feel more real to me than if it was over night. I like him more and more with every volume. Then the ending chapter has a huge twist that will affect the rest of the series. I look forward to reading the next volume.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Warnings: attempted sexual assault

Continuing from the previous storyline of her being in danger because of being the priestess of the Water God, Asahi is almost kidnapped again by the bandits. When they realize that it would be unsafe for her in the village, she sets out with Subaru and the Water God to the capital to ask the Emperor's favor. The child Emperor is yet to grow into his position, and asks for her hand in marriage in return for his protection. Another storyline is about her caretaker and how much he cherishes her and his origins.

While the story is still progressing onwards with Asahi trying to adjust to life, there is also the underlying wanting that she yearns to go back to her parents. Tsukihiko understands that wanting, and is also very protective of her because he knew the previous such traveler quite well. For her sake, he is even prepared to give up his life, if it means she can continue to live happily. I liked this part of the story, because the other person who provides her with protection, the Water God - well, his storyline is more about humanizing him and the probable romance between them. But for Tsukihiko, she is a sort of atonement for the resentment he held.

This was, however, also a very fast-paced story arc, with events just happening without letting it develop, and filling up the story. I felt each of the storylines could have done with more exploration of the characters and their feelings about it. Overall, it is a satisfactory installment in the series.

I love this story and I am so happy whenever I see a new volume released. The art is exquisite and so detailed and the storyline is engaging. It is a high fantasy, with a tiny sprinkling of The Wizard of Oz (Asahi desperately wants to return home, but she is finding good friends and loved ones in the strange world into which she has tumbled).
This volume definitely ramped the story up a bit, almost in the way Goblet of Fire ramped up the Harry Potter series. It started as a beautiful fantasy tale with danger and friendships and mystery, but now Asahi has blossomed into womanhood and she is desired for more than her connection to the Water Dragon God. Subaru is still in love with her and wants to protect her, but feels he is losing the battle to the enigmatic god, who seems to have kindled even more feelings for the girl than his original curiosity.

This volume really shakes up the story as Asahi has a somewhat forced change of scenery and has to leave her village behind. I liked the further characterization of Tsukihiko. He's become far more interesting to me, partially due to the fact that he sees Asahi as a person, instead of just a love-interest. Subaru continues to be old faithful, reliably loving Asahi for reasons unknown. Bear in mind that I'm not saying Ashai isn't deserving of his affection, it's just Subaru's interest in her has yet to be adequately defined. I continue to have no interest in the Water Dragon God or his "character growth." I actually think the narrative would be improved if he was just evil and Asahi had to vanquish him. As anticipated, Asahi is still strong and self-sacrificing. I do hope she is able to return home, as I am still rooting for her.

With dangering still following her at every turn, Asahi along with Subaru to live with the Emperor who is only a child and offers his hand in marriage.

She feels the Water God will be jealous but he only questions why he would feel such an emotion. The marriage would be a marriage of exchange and nothing he would really care about. I was hoping he would get some development with his relationship with Asahi but it seems he is the same though he does help her from time to time.

We also learn more about her caretaker Tsukihiko and his history with a previous traveler who is similar to Asahi. I wonder if the priestess we learned about before was his mother.

Overall, I really enjoyed this volume.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
This volume more about Tsukihiko including his background, and he’s officially my favorite side character. I just really love that despite his difficulty emotions, he was still able to be a good friend and caretaker for Asahi.
There’s also some plotting behind the scenes from a minor character and a side character/antagonist from previous volumes, as Asahi, Subaru, and the Water Dragon God end up having to live in the young emperor’s village for the time being. It’s interesting seeing Subaru and the Water Dragon God interacting a bit, meanwhile Asahi has her own rather amusing interactions with the young emperor.

Asahi is very kind she doesn't want anyone to get hurt, even though they're out to kidnap her or hurt her. I'm not sure if I agree with everything she does.. But I have to say that she is brave and she makes decision that I know I probably wouldn't make.

I guess I Just have to trust in her since she was smart enough as a child to survive this long. I very much think the King is very cute, he is trying his best, even though he is a child. I love how the author makes the children in her book wise and brave.

Wow, ok so this volume took a turn from the previous one. I couldn't put it down! The danger is increasing, plots are being hatched because people want to use Asahi for her perceived power/connection with the water dragon god for themselves. All Asahi wants is to live and return home. There were a few huge emotional parts throughout this volume. Learning more about Tsukihiko and his motivations. The water dragon god gains a new insight. And Subaru - he is quickly stealing my heart! Another great volume!

A nice progression of Asahi and her various relationships with those around her. Stand out moments are definitely the interactions with Tsukihiko.
Drama has been amped up, setting the stage for some interesting political intrigue.
All in all, a good volume, with some of the most beautifully staged panels I’ve seen in this series to date.

Volume Review: 4/5
I find the story interesting and the artwork nice. The characters, though … Asahi is not my favourite. And I do not like the water dragon god, even though that's not typical for me. I am looking forward to him changing, which I assume is going to happen. However, I really like Subaru. I am intrigued about where this is going so I will continue reading and enjoying.

This series is really reminding me of Red River now. Characters that try and use the ordinary girl that has some mysterious power/something they want for themselves is nothing new when it comes to this plotline. The Water Dragon god finally has some real character development and shows compassion/protectiveness for Asahi.

Another good volume with the plot moving along nicely and nothing being too confusing. I like that main characters are added fairly slowly so you don't get confused, I also like that they have the character/plot summary at the beginning.
The quick little bonus manga at the end are really cute.
Over all a good series.

"In this world Gods exist people here believe in the power of the Gods this Gods aren't doing anything for them. They just... Observe even so, people still believe in their powers. That emotion feels ferrying and makes people move. Maybe that emotion in itself is the power of the Gods. I was also suddenly thrown into that terror and I was dragged by it and... I became the Water God's wife.
