After escaping the enemy hill fort, the group that now includes nineteen ex slaves, attemps to return home. Nodens strikes and traps them in a devastating forest fire. Many such adventures ensue, an engagement with the Shield People who have been torturing and killing traders in Alyssa's lands. Lauren receives news the Queen is desperately ill, so her and Madeil have to rush to the fort to try and save her. Two men arrive, telling the Queen their wives are ill and would Princess Lauren go out onto the fringes of the lands to try and cure them. The Queen is distraught, but then goes with them on an armed patrol. They find execution style killings, Madeil gets a message from a stone circle, and then, finally, Madeil's friend Sorel and her husband are discovered beaten and almost dead. As the patrol returns, the perpetrators are discovered and a skirmish follows. But all are aware the other fort will form an army and attack sooner or later, so preparations are made to receive it. Gradually raids increase and tribal members get nearer the fort. A night hostage take secures one, who is put in the cell after interrogation. He escapes and takes Madeil hostage. The battle follows, the defenders are forced back, while Lauren, Lalena and Brevit are separated. Lalena and Lauren accidentally pass through the mist that took her to the Iron Age in the first place, and they find themselves in modern times. The police charge Lauren with the murder of an enemy that followed them. The pair volunteer to take archaeologists to a dig. They desperately need to get back, but how?
