Chapter One starts out with a bang. Literally. Brice Warfield, the Marquess of Warrington, is shot at but an unknown woman comes to his rescue and steps between him and the bullet. Elora Simmons sees the danger in slow motion and tries to help. Without really thinking she suddenly feels excruciating pain and collapses in his arms. Brice takes her home, summons a doctor and has her recuperating in the room next to his.
Over a period of days she mends and her naivety and honesty affect Brice in more ways than one. Elora, like so many heroines in historical romances, is beautiful. But the author takes it one step further and has her wear glasses. That, and her innocence, help drive this romance. She is not perfect but both Brice and the ton are not sure what to make of her. They are opposites. She is 21 years old and was raised in the country. We are never given the marquess's age but our heroine thinks he is at least 35 years old. Jaded from the deaths of his parents and older brother, he has a very difficult time forgiving himself for not saving them. This affects all those around him.
Secondary characters are introduced with some light suspense but Brice is not clear on who wants to kill him. It seems he has more than one enemy. I would have given this story a higher rating except Brice was a real jerk for a good portion of the romance. In my book -no pun intended- heroes can be two types of jerks. Those guys that are tough, rude but incredibly sweet and those guys that are like Brice. Someone you want to slap silly. He has it all but dwells on the past alienating those around him.
There are couple of other inconsistencies regarding the timeline and what should have actually happened but I overlooked those problems. I found myself wanting to finish the story to identify the true villain. Yes, Brice had his moments and probably didn't deserve Elora but he eventually learned from his mistakes. She managed to break through his reserved manner. The twist at the end was interesting and the epilogue tidied up the remaining loose ends. For this reason I gave it three stars because I liked it.
