SHE HAD BEEN WILLING TO DIE FOR HIM...WAS HE WILLING TO LIVE FOR HER?

Brice Warfield, Marquess of Warrington, was the most strikingly handsome man in London, and the most notorious for being haughty, ruthless, and absolutely unfeeling. For the three years since the murders of his parents and brother, he had hidden his bleak inner emptiness behind an icy demeanor and a heart as cold as stone ... until, on a dark night in 1818, the cloaked figure of a woman came out of the mist and threw herself in front of a bullet that could have killed him.

Elora Simmons, innocent and fresh from the country, hair damp with the London fog, was on her way to a new position as a governess. Heedless of her own safety, she had seen the pistol poised to fire and acted. Now, she came back to consciousness naked in the strong arms of a man who was attending her wound, and who stared into her eyes with a riveting Power that dared her to leap the chasm into his dark, tormented soul ... and to become his angel, his savior, or the woman he damned for making him want to live and want to love....

Read: 7/4/25- late review
Setting: Regency England

This story starts off with a bang. Literally. And the plot never grows stall. I enjoyed it from start to finish!

Plot: Ever since his parents and brother died in France, Brice has blamed himself. He has turned into a cold, rude man. He avoids any form of intimacy with people, including his sister. All that changes when he meets Elora.

Brice heard the warning before the gun fired. A mysterious woman jumped in front of a bullet for him and was severely injured. Who is this beautiful woman who saved his life? Why would someone risk their life for a stranger? Brice receives his answer when Elora wakes up. She's just a kind, wonderful person! Surely, that kind of goodness doesn't really exist? All Brice knows is that he can't let her go. Elora is the only one who can make him laugh, and he finds his old personality returning. Can his jaded soul heal?

There is still the mystery of who wants Brice dead. With his personality, I thought the list would be bigger. The author does an excellent job of keeping you guessing until the end.

Conclusion: This is my 1st book by this author, but it won't be my last. I'm a suker for a Grumpy H and the sweet h who melts his heart 🥰.

The best part about this book is its cover.

This book is under 300 pages, yet it took me FOREVER to finish. I had the hardest time getting into this book.

Issue 1: The heroine is a combination of a few too many Disney princesses. All that perfection and naivety was too boring for my tastes.

Issue 2: There wasn't enough relationship development between the two MCs to explain their love and since their love for one another didn't make much sense to me, I couldn't bring myself to really care.

The mystery bit was okay.

The premise was exactly my jam. The tone, setting and the characters were great. Really want to give it a 5 star and just might. My only nitpick was there were some moments that felt very repetitive with the hero storming off every time he feels things and the heroine's constant confusion and pearl clutching started to get tiring with how frequent it was. Like girl yes he wants to make sweet love to you, what else could getting naked possibly mean??! lol But I didn't want to put this down and a fun time was had. The heroine Elora Simmons is a sweet, sensitive, innocent, guileless, soft hearted country girl that is every bit naive and emotional but still likable. I like how protective she was about the hero. I was kinda hoping their MOC happened sooner but the sexual tension and angst was absolutely divine. Brice Warfield is a cold, temperamental moody jaded man who doesn't suffer fools or sentimentality. I love a good moody brooding hero whose protective instincts get activated around the heroine. Brice is extra angry cause from the moment Elora saves his life she triggers his soft feelings™ with her kindness and big eyes and she thinks he hates her. lol I love it. INJECT IT INTO MY VEINS. Our hero actually getting emotional was exactly what I enjoy. The hero pretty much hates everyone but the heroine and it's my achilles heel. Brice Warfield has the temperament of a feral cat but is a big ol' softie when he realizes he's in love. The necklace? Ugh. Silver heart indeed. 🖤 I just wanted a little more soft moments like that and less fighting feelings and disruptions. The fact that he didn't want to let her go early on in the book even while fighting his feelings was a nice change and unexpected. The "who hurt you" is always good and does things for me. Elizabeth Ann Michaels is a great writer with obsessive detail in her characters and their emotional range. Brice's green eyes seemed to have a whole character itself here and I didn't mind. lmao. Also, that cover is gloriously accurate.

Chapter One starts out with a bang. Literally. Brice Warfield, the Marquess of Warrington, is shot at but an unknown woman comes to his rescue and steps between him and the bullet. Elora Simmons sees the danger in slow motion and tries to help. Without really thinking she suddenly feels excruciating pain and collapses in his arms. Brice takes her home, summons a doctor and has her recuperating in the room next to his.

Over a period of days she mends and her naivety and honesty affect Brice in more ways than one. Elora, like so many heroines in historical romances, is beautiful. But the author takes it one step further and has her wear glasses. That, and her innocence, help drive this romance. She is not perfect but both Brice and the ton are not sure what to make of her. They are opposites. She is 21 years old and was raised in the country. We are never given the marquess's age but our heroine thinks he is at least 35 years old. Jaded from the deaths of his parents and older brother, he has a very difficult time forgiving himself for not saving them. This affects all those around him.

Secondary characters are introduced with some light suspense but Brice is not clear on who wants to kill him. It seems he has more than one enemy. I would have given this story a higher rating except Brice was a real jerk for a good portion of the romance. In my book -no pun intended- heroes can be two types of jerks. Those guys that are tough, rude but incredibly sweet and those guys that are like Brice. Someone you want to slap silly. He has it all but dwells on the past alienating those around him.

There are couple of other inconsistencies regarding the timeline and what should have actually happened but I overlooked those problems. I found myself wanting to finish the story to identify the true villain. Yes, Brice had his moments and probably didn't deserve Elora but he eventually learned from his mistakes. She managed to break through his reserved manner. The twist at the end was interesting and the epilogue tidied up the remaining loose ends. For this reason I gave it three stars because I liked it.

Excellent plot twist at the end but the character of Elora just sucks. She is naive to the point of absurdity, but everyone see that as just “charming”. Really shallow character development just sucked the life of out of this one for me.

She is a mystery, he is a very jaded gentleman....but when circumstances arise, there is never a doubt. The traits of compassion and honest rise to the surface. Love is the outcome.
