Brenda Wilmoth Lerner's coverage of science, public health and global issues is respected for its accuracy, objectivity, and passion in articulating contextual cultural and social connections. In addition to RUSA Book and Media Awards for her books on Climate Change and Biotechnology, Lerner's book, Infectious Diseases: In Context, was named an Outstanding Academic Title.

Lerner's work in areas at high risk to endemic and emerging diseases infuses her writing with rare cultural insights, earning a reputation for accessible, engaging, and award-winning coverage of complex topics and urgent issues. Lerner directed what critics termed "exceptionally fine" and "authoritative." coverage of SARS, H1N1, and other emerging disease outbreaks. Her book, the Encyclopedia of Espionage, Intelligence, & Security, was selected for Georgetown University's Selected Resources for Security Studies, the Defense Intelligence Agency Library, FBI Academic Library, Naval War College Library, and other defense/intelligence collections.

An R.N and former infection control specialist, Lerner is a member of the International Society of Infectious Diseases, attending the 12th Annual ISID Congress in Lisbon (2006) and the 13th Annual ISID Congress in Kuala Lumpur (2008). Brenda served on the Advisory Board for the Gale Encyclopedia of Neurological Disorders and continues to serve as advisor to major media sites covering an array of global issues. As her editorial and documentary project schedules allow, Lerner continues her studies as an admitted degree candidate at Harvard University with a concentration on courses devoted to medical humanities and public health issues.

In 2008, Lerner completed a 19-leg global circumnavigation with her frequent media partner and LernerMedia Global cofounder, K. Lee Lerner.

We are proud to announce that Climate Change: In Context, Brenda Wilmoth Lerner, K. Lee Lerner, eds. (created for Gale, a division of Cengage Learning), received a prestigious American Library Association RUSA award as one of the ten outstanding reference sources for 2009.

In the wake of the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, Climate Change: In Context was one of the first reference books designed to explain the complexities of those reports–and the scientifically well-established perils of climate change driven by human (anthropogenic) activity–to high school and early undergraduate students. Working mainly from Paris, we interviewed IPCC scientists and relied on both IPCC and National Academies reports to provide a comprehensive overview of the issues related to global warming and climate change. As editors, Brenda and I are grateful to the global group of scholars, researchers, and writers who contributed to Climate Change: In Context. Dr. Wallace S. Broecker and Thomas Hayden (Journalist and Lecturer in Environmental Sustainability at Stanford University) deserve special recognition for their compelling and eloquent introductions.

RUSA (Reference & User Services Association), a division of American Libraries Association, annually publishes its list of outstanding reference works in the May issue of American Libraries. The list is also included in Reference & User Services Quarterly and published on the RUSA Web site.
