Don't miss the next Echo Falls novel, Sound of Fear, coming soon from Marta Perry and HQN Books.
In the sweet subtle wind of a Pennsylvania Dutch town, a lost woman and a man of duty will risk their lives to uncover her true identity
The foundation of Amanda Curtis's very existence cracks the moment she discovers the woman she thought was her mother has never given birth. Where she belongs is a question she can't put to rest. But when the clues lead her to a charming yet chilling small town, the threat against her begins to unfold.
Trey Addison is a fixture in Echo Falls. The town and the people are his to protect. He was born to take his place in the family legal firm, but now that a stranger desperate to unlock her past is depending on him, he's forced to make an impossible choice. If Trey doesn't protect Amanda, she'll walk straight into a deadly trap. If he helps her expose the secrets that haunt her, the truth could shatter them both.
Marta Perry is a Pennsylvania-based author of over 35 novels, many of them inspirational romances. She uses her rural Pennsylvania life and her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage in writing her books, especially in her Pleasant Valley Amish series for Berkley Books and her new Amish-set suspense series for HQN Books.
Marta and her husband live in a centuries-old farmhouse in a quiet central Pennsylvania valley. They have three grown children and six beautiful grandchildren, and when she's not busy writing her next book, she's usually trying to keep up with her gardening, baking for church events, or visiting those beautiful grandkids.
A page-turning suspense with a Gothic air and a dash of Amish. I absolutely love these HQN Marta Perry novels. Not in the Christian Fiction genre I usually read and review, but delivers a clean read and the suspense is so scrumptious. Amanda's world is turned upside down after the unexpected death of her mother -- the woman she always thought had given birth to her. Now with her inheritance in possible jeopardy, she needs to discover the secrets of her past and that leads her to the quaint, Englisch/Amish town of Echo Falls -- a place seething with secrets. Cue the scary organ music and be prepared for drama and danger as a family's skeletons are exposed.
If you have fond memories of reading Gothic romantic suspense by legends like Phyllis A. Whitney, Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt you will absolutely, positively love Sound of Fear (and it's predecessor, Echo of Danger.
This is a suspense tale, but not a thriller, and carries an understated romance, but it's not overtly romantic. I enjoyed it thoroughly. A young woman is told that she was adopted - which comes as a shock, and may prevent her from inheriting her home if the adoption turns out to be insufficiently formal. She goes to Echo Falls in Amish country and engages a solicitor to try to trace her birth mother, which triggers resentment and danger.
I like that our protagonist is a veterinary surgeon, with her own Labrador, and makes herself useful with farm animals. She is a strong character, cut adrift from all she has known.
This is a clean read suitable for adults and young adults, and can be read as a standalone. I downloaded an e-ARC through Net Galley and Fresh Fiction. This is an unbiased review.
The second book in the Echo Falls series is just as good as the first one. Amanda Curtis sets out to find her birth mother. Heading to Echo Falls could lead to someone not wanting secrets revealed after all these years. Loved the suspense and ready for the next book.
Found this book at an antique store so I grabbed it up I thought the story had very interesting believable characters kept me on my toes the entire time. Anything by Marta Perry is always good .
Imagine living your entire life believing you were the daughter of a famous artist only to learn that you're not who you thought you were ! After Amanda Curtis's mother's sudden and accidental death her attorney in Boston questions the legality of her adoption. This came as a surprise to her since she thought Juliet Curtis to be her biological mother. What's more her adoption papers and birth certificate aren't anywhere to be found. Not even sure if she was legally adopted brings into question if her money hungry Uncle George will contest the will. Following a clue found on the canvas of one of her Mothers paintings Amanda goes to Echo Falls in search of her birth mother. Strange things begin to happen when someone tries to hurt or kill her on several different occasions. Will Amanda be able to learn her true identity and why her birth mother gave her up for adoption? Why would someone try to get her out of the way before she found her answers? Sound of Fear is book two of the Echo Falls series. It's a gripping mystery that kept this reader turning pages when I should have been cleaning my apartment. There's romance, but in a clean way. Unpredictable and at times hair raising. I was drawn into the mystery from the beginning and Marta Perry kept my attention to the end. I always love when a book has me visualizing my characters and surroundings. This story did that for me. All readers of Cozy mysteries, Amish Fiction and fans of Marta Perry will love Sound of Fear. I really enjoyed it and gave it five Stars. I intend to read Book three of this series, Shattered Silence! I borrowed a copy of Sound of Fear from my local library. A review was not requested. All opinions shared here are my own.
When veterinarian Amanda Curtis discovers that her recently killed mother, artist Juliet Curtis, never gave birth and that Juliet's brother may be able to challenge Juliet's will, Amanda determines that she needs to find out who her mother was and where the adoption occurred. The only clue is that someone breaks into their den and breaks a picture frame of a waterfall, one of the few landscapes Juliet ever painted before Amanda's dog Barney chases him away. On the canvas Amanda finds a clue that leads her to Echo Falls, PA.
Amanda's friend and lawyer approaches a young lawyer, Trey Alter, in Echo Falls to help Amanda in what they hope will be an easy search. When the clue leads them to an obituary of a young woman from the town's most influential family, local town gossip mills build Amanda's search into a threat against the wealthy family's power. Then the harassment starts, and the danger builds, but Trey and a warm Amish family extend hands of friendship and more despite what it might mean to Trey's law firm or the family's safety.
Perry draws distinctive characters who are likeable or unlikeable. They are deep and well-developed. The plot line moved rapidly but did not feel rushed. There was no sex or bad language. I found it hard to put down and want to read the rest of the series.
This is my second time back in Echo Falls, and with author Marta Perry, while these falls are lovely, and sure would like to see them, there is a lot of danger here. We are back with some old Amish friends and a certain law firm, but this book can be read alone, and you will be hooked once you turn the first page. My mind kept switching as to whom the culprit was, and I was very surprised in the end, and all because of greed. Our main character is a grieving daughter, and searching for her roots, in surprising twists, and in the end not knowing whom she is with her mother gone, but wait for the twists in this story. There is a bit of romance here, but with the sense of loss so fresh, and the findings so new, both are going slow, and be ready for so much to unfold, and danger around each corner. I for one can’t wait for the next book in this series, mysteries at the finest. I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Harlequin, and was not required to give a positive review.
I enjoyed reading this very intense romantic suspense novel. Things started happening right away to pull you into the story line. Very interesting and believable characters. Enjoy!
An entertaining and inspiring story about falling in love and finding the people that make you feel at home while solving an intriguing mystery from the past. Marta Perry writes stories that cross the lines of several sub-genres. There is suspense, murder mystery, sweet romance, women's lit and Amish stories meddled together in a perfect harmony in Sound of Fear delivering a pleasing story that was easy to get lost in. There was something familiar about the story, a little bit like coming home, a little bit like I have been here before - and I mean beyond the book one in the series. All the characters, even the possible villains, have redeeming characteristics, if they are not all around likable and lovable, people you want to get to know better. Amanda Curtis's life was spiraling out of control with all the new revelations of her parentage and their destinies. She is a fiercely independent, capable, and smart woman. She is lost and feels lonely with all the news shaking the foundation of her life, yet she manages to hold it together, to seek answers, and to be understanding and pleasant while everything she once knew is tumbling down. Trey Addison is comfortable in his own skin and life, he knows who he is, where he comes from, what he wants and how to go about getting it. He is kind, generous, all around a solid, good guy. The sparks are flying in between Trey and Amanda, the attraction is obvious but that does not make them agree on each and every point of the investigation. A research that is raising some disturbing questions causing several dangerous, even life-threatening attacks towards Amanda. The new tidbits of information and the continues threats intensifying the atmosphere keeps the story going while Amanda and Trey get to know each other better, and Amanda has a chance to make acquaintance with her new-found family members. The story has such a smooth storytelling, the flow of the tale pulls you in, and you lose the sense of time and place. I genuinely felt the interest to solve the case, to find the truth, to stop the harassment, and see if Amanda has the guts to go for it and accept all the love offered to her in different forms from different people. Heartwarming romance and thought-provoking destinies mixed with intense suspense and acute danger delivered in a story with lovable, charismatic characters. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
"Perry’s latest is the perfect mix of mystery and small-town charm. The tension and palpable fear keep the edgy suspense constant, allowing the reader to come along for the ride and puzzle the mystery out with the characters. Perfect pacing keeps the pages flying by until the exciting, unexpected conclusion. This is part of the Echo Falls series, but it could be read as a stand-alone" (4 stars @ RT Book Reviews).
I'm a fan of Marta Perry's previous Amish mystery series--practically devoured them, and I read and reviewed the first novel in this series, Echo of Danger, giving it 3.5 stars. I was hoping that this second book would be an improvement over the previous one, but it was incredibly slow moving and clues were hard to come by, and for those reasons, I can only give this novel 3-stars.
We first meet the heroine, veterinarian Amanda Curtiss, as she's just returning to her practice while still grieving the recent loss of her mother, Julia Curtiss, a well-known and highly revered Boston artist, who lost her life as the innocent victim of random street violence. When Amanda's uncle, Robert McKinley, who is also the family attorney shows up, he has some shocking news to impart--during the autopsy, the coroner discovered that her mother, Julia, had never given birth to a child, shattering Amanda's sense of identity, since Julia never told Amanda that she was adopted. If not her mother's child, who is her birth mother? Will the discovery that she's not actually Julia's child affect her inheritance of her mother's estate?
When Amanda she returns home after that piece of news, she discovers that someone has broken into the family home, and while nothing appears to be missing, she finds one of her mother's paintings, a rare landscape, one that's been hanging up over the fireplace in the den since Amanda was 10, lying on the floor, frame broken. After the police are called, gather what little evidence there is and then depart, Amanda wants to assess the damage to the painting, and that's when she spots a small notation at the bottom of the rear edge, previously hidden from view, which reads, "In memoriam, M. 1989. Echo Falls. Too young to die." The date of the painting shocks Amanda, since she was only two months old when it was painted. Could this possibly be a clue to her finding out the truth of her parentage? Since Amanda is the sole named beneficiary in the will, and is also referred to in that document as "her daughter", if she can't prove that she's been legally adopted, Julia's estranged brother may be the one to inherit Julia's sizable estate by contesting the language in that document. In search of the truth, Amanda soon heads for Echo Falls, PA, in search of her birth records, and, hopefully, proof of her legal adoption, something the family lawyer didn't find among Julia's papers. The only thing he has is Amanda's baptismal certificate.
Once she arrives in Echo Falls, a predominantly Amish community, she meets with Trey Addison, a local attorney who was recommended by her Uncle Robert, and the efforts to discover the meaning behind the inscription and learn whether or not it has anything to do with Amanda's parentage begin. Interestingly, no one in this small town seems eager to even meet with or discuss the issue, and when Amanda comes to the realization that the date on the painting coincides with the death of a 17-year-old girl, found dead at the base of Echo Falls, presumably from fall, a girl whose name starts with the letter "M", and who is the granddaughter of the town matriarch, Elizabeth Winthrop, the mystery deepens, especially when no one in town seems to want to talk about it.
There's also the growing attraction between Trey and Amanda, and his attempts to help her find her adoption records, and solve the mystery of her birth and parentage, are also met with quite a degree of hostility. There are more than a few threats to Amanda--it's clear that no one really wants to tell her anything, and that someone would most definitely like her to go away and stop asking questions, all of which lead to more than one life-threatening piece of the puzzle Amanda is trying to solve.
My main problem with this novel isn't Ms. Perry's writing style, which is excellent. The plot combines all the features of a great read: mystery, suspense, danger and romance, set in the small but charming small town of Echo Falls, but for me, my displeasure was all about the pacing. This novel starts out well, the set up for the death of Amanda's mother, the break-in, Amanda's discovery of the mysterious inscription at the back of the painting are all set up quickly at the beginning of the novel, but then it stalls and continues on at a snail's pace thereafter. Additionally, there are numerous references to the previous novel in the series, mostly mentioned as an afterthought, but for reader's new to the series, I'd recommend reading these novels in the order written. Also, for those readers familiar with Ms. Perry's previous Amish mystery novels, which I would definitely categorize as Christian fiction, there is nothing particularly Christian-inspired or faith-based in this novel. While I don't consider that to be a detriment to Ms. Perry's story, some readers of only Christian fiction might find fault with that.
The bright spot in all this is that Ms. Perry's mystery did keep me guessing until the end, and her characters were all well drawn and for the most part quite likable. It was a good mystery, set in Amish country--a place I love to visit and re-visit, both in person and in Ms. Perry's novels. However, I didn't find this novel to be that much of a romance, and, for me, it was a very slow read, so, while I liked elements of this novel to some degree, I just didn't love it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
Sound of Fear: Echo Falls Book 2 is by Marta Perry. This book takes place in a small town, Echo Falls, in Pennsylvania. It is on the edge of Amish country and many of the inhabitants intermingle in society. The Amish help when there are deaths or disasters in the community. It is a lovely place to raise children; but it does have its secret side. Amanda Curtiss was devastated upon the sudden death of her mother, Judith Curtiss. It had been the two of them against the world for all Amanda’s life. She was just glad she had been able to spend this last year at home with her. Amanda had broken up with her boyfriend and dissolved her business and returned to Boston to work in an animal clinic until she got back on her feet. Now she has to face the death of her best friend and Mother. Then her lawyer informs her that Judith had never had a child and they begin looking for Amanda’s adoption papers and birth certificate to prove she was Judith’s daughter and so Judith’s brother could not contest the will. The search leads Amanda to Echo Falls looking for her biological mother and answers. Will she find them here or will Echo Falls close in on itself to keep their secrets? When incidents begin happening putting Amanda in danger, her lawyer, Trey, becomes involved in protecting her. Who is after her? As you read the book, you find yourself trying to figure out who killed whom. The book is excellent and keeps you glued to it.

Amanda Curtis’ world is turned upside down after her mother’s death, when she learns the life she’s known could all be a lie. She decides to head to Echo Falls, following a clue on her late-mother’s painting, to see if she can uncover the truth about her family. Trey Addison is in line to take over the family legal firm, but he agrees to help Amanda, which will apparently include keeping her alive as her life is threatened shortly after arriving in town. How will Amanda react when she learns that Trey may know more than he’s telling her? Will she live long enough to find the answers she’s seeking? (HQN, Oct., 384 pp., $7.99)
The Sound of Fear is a uniquely mysteriously, romantic Amish/English in this detective stories. Well not a detective - police - well, I guess you could say detective because he is a police detective. Hows that? Does that help? Is that clean as mud? Poor Amanda, her mother is promoted to Glory (passed away) and she then finds out that she could not have been her mother because - hey I can't ruin the book for you - but she finds out a bunch of stuff that really blew her mind and it leads her to Echo Falls and to a bunch of danger - poor thing cannot catch a break except for one thing - Trey the police officer - he is bound to help her and protect her and maybe even love her. How would you all like that? Well I won't tell you that happens or not but I will say this, this is one Super book. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

Second in the Echo Falls series, in which Amanda Curtis's life is threatened as she gets closer to finding out who she really is. After her mother's death, Amanda learns that the woman never had a baby, thus raising the issue of who did give birth to her and how the woman she always thought of as her mother happened to raise her. When her home is broken into, the one picture her mother drew gives her a clue when the frame is broken and several words are uncovered.
When she is referred to a local attorney by the man who had served as her mother's attorney for years, Amanda is hopeful she'll find her mother. What she finds instead is a small town, several of whose members are determined that she go away and forget her search. But Amanda is determined.
When she moves into a cottage on an Amish farm, answers begin to emerge in the midst of several mysterious threats, but they don't compare to what happens when she is asked to meet the man who identifies himself as her father at the very site where her biological mother died. And the sound of the falls do not drown out Amanda's fears.
I picked this book up at a church rummage sale thinking this would be an ok read. I was wrong, it was fantastic. 'Sound of Fear' is the second book in the Echo Falls series but stands alone on its own. Amanda Curtis resides in Boston and has a successful career as a vet. Her life is turned upside down when her Mother dies suddenly. Shortly after her Mom's death her home is broken into. The thief tried to steal a painting done by Amanda's Mother. Amanda sees an inscription that was hidden underneath the now broken frame. When an autopsy is performed on her Mom she finds out that her Mom has never given birth. Amanda feels her world is crumbling down around her so she aims to find out who her birth Mom was. Armed with only the inscription on the painting she heads to the painting's scene which is Echo Falls in search of clues. She hires a lawyer named Trey Addison to help her unlock her past. Trey is torn between his loyalty to his firm and the secrets surrounding Amanda's birth while trying to keep Amanda from deadly traps.

Sound of Fear is the second book in Marta Perry’s Echo Falls series. It read like a stand alone novel to me. Sometimes books in a series need to be read in order to fully understand what is going on. I didn’t even know there was a book that proceeded it. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that the author had also included Amish characters in this novel. Marta’s writing style seems different in Sound of Fear than I remember from reading in a few of her other books.
In Sound of Fear, after arriving in Echo Falls Amanda befriends unlikely people. They are soon protecting her from danger as she is searching to uncover the truth. Marta had me guessing to the end who wanted Amanda gone from the picture. Sound of Fear is a Romantic Suspense story with a light, clean romance.
Sound of Fear started out at a very fast pace and the first third of the book was quite engrossing. Then the action suddenly sort of stalled and things started to move so slowly that there were a few passages I even found slightly boring. Amanda's "accidents" are not serious enough to warrant any kind of serious suspense and her relationship with Trey, while sweet, also seems to lack reals substance. The general plot is interesting, though, so if you love the genre and want to read a nice, mystery book with a touch of (clean) romance, you should give this one a try. Side note: Sound of Fear is book two in the Echo Falls series by Marta Perry, but can be read as a stand alone.
This was a gift from Harlequin and I enjoyed it. Just when the tale began to lag, something drastic happened to Amanda who was on a quest in rustic Pennsylvania to find out whether she was legally adopted. She hires Trey to help her legally and they have a tempestuous relationship but an interesting one. The Amish who rented her a cabin were written with a paintbrush of admiration. I admired Amanda's tenaciousness and her ability to stand up to people. Characters were very realistic. Two murders made the reader speculate. Who did them? Loved the suspense!
I've read many of Marta Perry's books, but hadn't read the first one in this series. It wasn't necessary to enjoy this book. I liked the setting and the premise of the book. It was an enjoyable clean romantic suspense story. The pace of the book is uneven and the main character, Amanda, has a good heart but can be annoying. She is quick to temper and taking out her frustration and confusion over her situation on new friends who care about her. I was surprised by the ending and had incorrectly guessed the villain.
When Amanda’s mother dies, Amanda finds out that she wasn’t her real mother and she is in danger of losing everything her mother left her unless she can find adoption papers. Her mother was an artist and had a landscape painting(when she didn’t do landscapes) that may point to the answers. Amanda returns to that place and puts herself in danger over and over before finding out the truth.
Truly captivating! The characters, the suspense! It's a hard book to put down. I usually keep to a few Authors but then I run out of books. I decided to try this one and am very glad I did. Looking forward to book 3 in this series. I just need to clean house first.😊
I LOVE Marta Perry's books! I like how she can blend the Amish and English communities together with strong characters from each. This is book 2 in the series and I understand book 3 is in the wings! Can't wait to read it!
The book is not the type of book I would normally pick up to read, but I won a copy so I read it. The book was enjoyable the mystery aspect was interesting and the love interest between the two main characters was realistic.
The story line moved along with intrigue and mystery building. Good characters, especially the domineering grandmother and even the protective dog, Barney. I enjoyed this story even more than the first book in the series.
Great read. I enjoy all of Marta Perry’s books. This is the second book in the Echo Falls series and I look forward to reading the 3rd one next year. Highly recommend.
Great story by Marta Perry. She has been a favorite author of mine since I first started to read "Amish Fiction" years ago. A mystery that I didn't figure out until the very end.
