Scars and Tats

Scars are tattoos with better stories…

A scarred, lonely woman
A curious little boy
One uninvited, tattooed guest
A nasty blizzard
One cabin
Two guns
A set of handcuffs

What could possibly go wrong?

Mela McKinley fled with her infant son and disappeared four years ago trying to heal the awful scars inside and out. Taking refuge in the mountains of Colorado, not one person had come near their secluded doorstep… though she was prepared for a fight.

In the middle of a historic blizzard, little Beck points out the window to a figure approaching in the snow. After hiding Beck…and fully armed, Mela confronts Jackson Winslow and has zero reservations about shooting him, if necessary.

Ultimately, saving him from the forces of nature, she takes the uninvited stranger prisoner in her home holding the upper hand. While cautiously tending to him, she realizes how much she has missed a man—though this scarred and tattooed man is not who he seems. Once he has invaded her thoughts in a delicious way, her guard is down and suddenly, the tables are turned and now…it’s his turn.

What she doesn’t know is who he really is and what he brings to her doorstep.

In the blink of an eye, Mela McKinley loses one of the most important people in her life. While lying in the hospital in shock and fighting her grief Mela's MIL threatens to take her last remaining light from her. Scared and desperate Mela calls her twin sister and together with the help of her sister's boyfriend ROCK and his MC they devise a plan that sends Mela and her son into hiding.

Four years later in the middle of a blizzard, a man stumbles towards her and Beck's refuge. Thinking her past has finally caught up to them Mela is prepared to do anything to protect herself and her son. But Jackson Winslow is sick and as much as Mela wants him gone her nurturing side takes over as she nurses him back to health.

As these two grow closer Mela's walls start to fall but Jackson is keeping secrets and when those secrets come out he could very well lose the two people who have come to mean the world to him.

OMGosh...this book. I had NO idea what I was getting into with this one. I've never read this author before but the blurb sounded interesting and the cover caught my eye, so I thought "WHY NOT?"

This book hits you right in the feels straight out of the gate. My heart broke for Mela on SO many levels. I was already tearing up two chapters in! This was an amazingly well-written book. The pace meanders along slowly and surely peeling back the layers that added a nice bit of suspense to the story. The characters were interesting and engaging.

As I said my heart went out to Mela. At first, she seemed so fragile, but her tragedy shaped her into a strong and capable woman. Jackson had his own scars and for most of the book, he is shrouded in mystery. I liked that even though we don't know what exactly he is hiding, we do get chapters from his POV that helps to connect us to him as a character. His relationship with Beck was a highlight of this book as well.

We also get some interesting side characters. I'd LOVE to read more about Ari/Rock and their MC. As well as Jackson's BFF Dalton. All wrapped up with a nice epilogue that was like the cherry on top of this wonderful book sundae. Two HUGE thumbs up from yours truly.

I love Kristi Pelton. I do not love that she takes for-ev-er to write a book. I mean come on...we are waiting. But this is worth the wait

Mela loves her husband and her baby son. Until the night her life is torn apart and she must hide. And boy does she hide. Really well. And she needs to hide really well. Her very connected mother-in-law wants Beck and Mela will stop at nothing to protect him. Not mountains or snow or isolation.

My future wasn't even vaguely an image I could see. It was a thousand piece puzzle in a box with missing pieces.

Mela and Beck have made a very isolated life for themselves. One that involves hidey holes and hiking to town. They are off the grid. Until Jackson finds them. Well not so much finds them as they find him. In a blizzard. Half frozen. Jackson pushed Mela's safety net.

I'd been in complete control for the past four years and in nine days...he'd stolen the show.

And Jackson? Sexy, snow machine riding Jackson? He understands Mela's need for privacy. Understands it more than he can say. And if Mela knew how much he understood, she might kick him back out into the snow.

I needed to tell her everything. Every. Fucking. Thing. God, I hope it wasn't too late.

Ms Pelton has given us a book about trust. Trusting yourself. Trusting your instincts. Mela has been so cautious that she is afraid to allow anyone else in. And with good reason. But in Jackson she hopes she has found someone to share her burden. A reason to peak out of that hidey hole she has been relying on.

I'd run away my entire life from someone or something, bu I'd never wanted to stay more than right now.

Scars and Tats was a book I didn't want to end. In fact, I messaged the author and begged for an epilogue. I am not above begging. You will not want this one to end either. The feels. The sexy times. Oh my the sexy times.

UPDATE: There is an epilogue. And you can thank me because now it is longer.

Please Ms Pelton, give us more. Because not all heros ride on horses. Some ride snowmachines and some ride motorcycles.

After losing the love of her life, Mela knew she had to do everything she could to keep her newborn son safe. She does this for four years until a sexy, of course, stranger winds up at their secluded cabin.

I LOVED this book so much! Once I started it, I read it in one sitting because I literally couldn't put it down. The romance between Mela and Jackson was like a slow burn. They couldn't and shouldn't want each other but after time their spark grew to something beautiful. I HAD to know what Jackson's secret was and I needed to see Mela and Beck get the happy ending they desperately deserved. Little Beck was honestly one of the greatest parts of this story. The growing relationship between a player and a little boy in need of a father was adorable. I felt the love between Mela and Jackson from the start. The author obviously knows how to write characters you will love and root for. As I was reading the very last page I knew this book was going onto my Favorite Books shelf.

I absolutely loved it and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone that wants to read a great love story! Thank You, Kristi Pelton, for acknowledging I might have stalked you forever and for sending me a copy of your book. It was amazing! (FYI, I may stalk you much more in the future!)

I've had this book on my Kindle for awhile from a One-Click binge I went on when I was attempting to clean up my TBR shelf. I'm pretty much just kicking myself for letting it wait so long now since I really enjoyed this story. Mela was a great character to read about and I liked that we got to see the difference in her strength from the beginning of the book to the end. The story didn't focus a lot on her building that strength but it was still very evident that she had become a lot stronger in her years in hiding. She and Jackson worked well together which was fun to see. They had some amazing chemistry between them that was heating up the book and had me intrigued.

Overall, if you haven't read this story I highly recommend doing so. I'm also super curious about Mela's sister Ari and if she and Rock will ever get a story.

I liked this one way more than I thought I would.

The story was cute and the characters were fun.
Of course, I liked the little boy the most, but the two MCs were pretty good as well! They made me laugh a few times and even made me a bit teary-eyed.

Overall, it was a really enjoyable book!

3 We all have scars stars!

This is a very fast read. Didn't expect anything before going in.

What I like...
* Mela (h) a Colombian beauty. Her character development is really good. From being afraid and weak to strong and protective.
* Beck - the adorable four year old kid. Very mature and responsible for his age.
* Rock and his MC buddies
* I should say something about Jackson. He is the H after all. I just had a problem with him asking Mela about trust when he was lying to her about who he really is. Just rubbed me the wrong way, I guess. But to be fair, he is really good to her and Beck.
* And the epilogue, of course. Sweeet :)

This is my first book by the author and I don't know where she's been hiding that I've missed her other books but if their half as good as Scars and Tats I have to read them all!

In the blink of an eye Mela McKinley's life was shattered.
She's left struggling to fight to protect her son so she runs.
After 4 years being able to keep her son Beck safe someone who's going to change their safe little world shows up.
Jackson didn't know who's door he'd show wind up at when he got lost in a snowstorm, nor did he expect to meet the business end of a gun but that's exactly what he got when he shows up half dead at Mela's cabin.
Jackson tries to gain Mela's trust and in doing so omits the truth about himself. He has secrets that could put her and Beck at risk if they got out.
And once those secrets are revealed none of their lives will be the same again...

Poor Mela, I felt for her. The things she'd suffered, but I also admired her. Knowing she did whatever was necessary to keep her child safe made her a hero in my eyes.
I loved this story, the characters, even the porn star twin lol. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

Wow when I sat to read this earlier I didn't expect to get such feelings going through me. I sat and inhaled this in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. I NEEDED to know what was going to happen. As I kept reading my stomach was in a twist. I was really hoping this author wasn't going to gut me. Did she? Well your gonna have to read it yourself. I will say as soon as I had finished it my daughter walked in the room asking about dinner and I bawled at her. Good book she asked? I couldn't put into words how much I loved it.

I'm not going to say anything about the storyline. I will say I'd love another story about the secondary characters- Rock and his crew gave me goosebumps.

I'm not sure why I haven't read any of this authors books before but that will have to change as this was an epic read.

So good with all the feels right down to the last words and had me hooked right from the start.
Mela has a secret and a past that haunts her present and possibly her future. She lives the perfect life with the perfect husband that saved her once. Now dealing with day to day issues and his business dealings along with her horrific mother in law Mela faces new challenges that are shadowed by her haunting past. So perhaps her perfect life isn't as perfect as people think.
After a tragedy strikes Mela's family she must face her past head on and connect it with her present and future. As Mela learns to stand on her own and face her demons we learn so much about her past and her secrets as well as her new friends and connections.
Along comes Jackson, tall dark and oh so handsome but who is he and is he a threat? Stranded with him in a cabin, can Mela trust him and how does he know her husband?
Heartbreak, happiness, fear and anticipation along with some corny smiles.....this book makes you feel it. The story plays out at a steady pace and with just enough angst and shock to keep you guessing. Great ending and a beautiful epilogue that leaves you needing nothing.
Great characters a great story line and a great ending - what more do you need :)

4.5 Stars!

This was the first time reading this author for me. I will definitely pick up some of her back work and take a look after reading Scars and Tats. I picked up on this book because of the synopsis. A bit of intrigue, single mom protecting her son and a mystery man showing up at their secluded doorstep. Perfect mix for an afternoon read!

Mela has been in hiding for almost 4 years and she trusts no one. Jackson shows up injured and frozen and she can't help but care for him while waiting for answers about why he is there. I loved the slow build of trust and friendship. Although there was no denying some sexual chemistry, it really was trust that brought them together. That lesson even more valuable as things implode around them. Their friendship and trust is what brings them back together in the end.

Loved little Beck. Such a brave boy. Loved their friends and Mela's sister. And of course, the epilogue just makes everything perfect in my world! So happy to have read this one!

This book was awesome. It was emotional it was sweet it was drama it was hot and sexy and so much more.

I loved Mela! My heart was breaking for what she went through. But I loved how when things got to hard she got herself up and she fought back. She had one thing to live for and that was her son and her mamma bear instincts came out and she took care of her son

And then she met Jackson and he was going through his own problems and issues, but this was two people who went through their own issues, but they found each other. And man did I love little Beck, he was adorable and so grown up for his age!

How is this going to end? Happily ever after or what will Mela do when she discovers Jackson's secret. Will this be another thing she has to overcome or will she finally be at peace and have her happily ever after?

Loved every minute of this book... Definitely a MUST READ

Mela McKinley is a tired, emotionally scarred woman, but the lights in her life are her baby son Beck and her husband Ian; despite the fact that his mother, Senator McKinley, hates her and doesn’t hide the fact, constantly belittling her and telling Ian to leave his “porn star Mexican” wife. Something that isn’t even true, she isn’t a porn star and she isn’t even Mexican.

After a tragic accident, Senator McKinley threatens to take away everything Mela loves, and so she reaches out for help and she runs. After being hidden from the world for a few years, with not one person stumbling onto her whereabouts, a blizzard sees Mela’s little safe haven being found by Jackson, claiming to be lost and needing help. He’s injured, full of fever, and the snow outside means Jackson isn’t going anywhere soon. Can she trust him though? Or is he connected to the Senator in some way?

The suspense and drama in this book were really good. I loved the way Mela got away, the people involved, the people she met, just generally the whole story was well written and dragged me into it from the very beginning. The little bits from Jackson had me wondering who he was and how he knew what he did. It really kept me interested which is always good. I enjoyed Scars and Tats and give it 4.5 stars.

Holy mother of hateful mother in laws. Mela has her life turned upside down and her loss if great in the blink of an eye. Her mother in law who hates her and has hated her from the gate out intends on taking her son Beck from her. Thank goodness for her sister and the man she loves Rock. His MC has vowed protection of Beck and Mela from the monster in law. Fleeing she finds herself cut off from the world until a man shows up at her door. Four years she has been alone and in the worst snow storm he has to stumble upon her doorstep.

Problem is Mela has been alone so long and she knows this man brings trouble ... But can she break down and trust again. And if so what kind of trouble does he bring....

So this story does run slow BUT the 5 star comes from the depth written into the characters making that pace necessary. Jackson is just as damaged as Mela. Beck is a wonderfully written character as a child in this story. Love great kids written in. There are secondary characters .. Rock and Melas sister that I need to find out about. Her career choice is what plagued Mela in the first place. If that book is out there I need it therefore I'm going hunting right after this.

This is a great read full of sorrow for Mela and a few more but not that rat ass Heifer in law ... Omg. Love the story and look forward to more!!!

Click it up friends and thank you for the ARC!

Well, this book had a little of everything I love in a romance read - a broken yet strong heroine, a sexy AF alpha hero who is lost but doesn't know yet he's wants to be found, an intriguing back story with a touch of suspense and twists and turns, chemistry that pulses from the page, good guys, bad guys & as a bonus a kid that I just wanted to squish.

I think I spent the first few pages of the book with my heart in my mouth, wondering if I was going to survive it. I instantly loved Mela & knew from the outset that my complete dislike her nemesis was going to be well founded. And boy was it.

Enter a group of rebels, renegades, misfits & outlaws, who I completely fell head over heels in love with, and I wasn't putting the book down. My love for Rock, Duckie, Two & the guys is forever. Patch me in. Read this book & I'll bet you'll be patching in with me - you'll see.

Now the set up is complete... and the story of Mela & Jackson really begins. I was with them every step of the way, and even though I logically knew I'd get my HEA... boy did they have some secrets, lies, scars & tats to sort through first.

A thoroughly entertain read that will hook you in & make you wish you owned a snow covered mountain hideaway in Colorado.

Scars and Tats by Kristi Pelton is a great read and a wondeful contemporary romance novel.
You´re gonna love this book !!
Quote :
" THE WORLD IS FULL OF MONSTERS WITH FRIENDLY FACES AND ANGELS FULL OF SCARS. "
I second this.
Meet Mela, a young wife and mother who loves her family deeply but has scars, visble and invisible.
Then tragedy strikes and she is forced to go on the run and into hiding.
Years later, she lives with her little one in the mountains, a stranger falls to her feet.
Question- can she trust him with her secret?
And what are his secrets? Is it possible to meet his soul mate on a mountain ridge?

Scars and Tats is a sweet sweet romance, but also loss and pain, love and mourning.

Quote :
" We are all on this earth for a reason. Every day is leading you somewhere even though you won´t know it until you get there. "
5 Wonderful Stars and Thank you Kristi Pelton !!

The young mother that is on the run with a baby. Hiding out in the wildness for years. Until that one day that a stranger appears at her doorstep.
To be very honest – this story is not a new concept and I am pretty sure I at least saw one movie with that same subject.

So I think it is fair to say that there are probably even more books out there featuring the same idea. So what makes this book stand out in what is probably a sea of similar ideas ? It is the enganging writing style of the author .

´Scars and Tats by Kristi Pelton is well written and even if I was not conviced at first this book still managed to draw me in after a few chapters and kept me engaged until the End.

While it might not have been the most surprising story it was well developed and its characters were deep enough so the reader could relate to them. I would therefore like to recommend this book to you if you like good solid romance with suspense.

Everyone has scars either from one thing or another on the inside or the outside, but the tattoos your place on them are what counts! I don't mean exactly to put tattoos on the inside of your body or even on the outside, I mean as some of us go through things that stay with us for life we can find a way to move on from them or having someone to help us move on from them helps and heals but to never forget. Because strength is what helps us, the scars are what teach us and people are what not only helps an helps but push us to get where we are really meant to be!
One set of twin girls, two very different characters, but one effected by the other! When the fire gets started twins come together! Mela is one strong woman who is put through the test and trials of life but wen things get nasty, Mela finds the strength to keep going with the help of her twin! But then a man comes along and things get twisted again! But this time everyone learns how to deal! Amazing read that I recommend for other to read that have needed strength or gone through hardships!

I knew halfway through this book I'd be recommending it to EVERYONE. I stopped halfway through and told a few people to GET READY cause this book is so freaking good. I couldn't even wait till I finished. I lost sleep over this book, stayed up all night reading. SO GOOD!

"Scars are permanent. Marks representing something that hurt us. Some are visible. Some are not. I had both..."

Mela lost her husband in an unexpected tragedy and she's on the run with her infant son, Beck. Her husband's family is wealthy and has the power to do anything. With the help of Mela's twin and her boyfriend's motorcycle club, they are determined to keep them both safe.

Mela has to get gone for good... no ties... no communication... nothing. After making a new home for her and Beck in a remote cabin in the snowy mountains Mela can finally breathe again. Beck is getting older, becoming more independent. She has taught him to survive if he has to... just in case.

When a hurt stranger comes wandering on their property, everything changes. Mela is still running from her past, she doesn't trust anyone. This stranger could be someone from that past, someone trying to hurt her and take Beck. She won't let that happen so she takes everything to extreme cautionary measures.

"Promise you won't run from me. I don't ever want to be lost again."

This stranger is everything Mela didn't expect. He's loving and caring.... he didn't try to hurt them when he could have. Mela didn't expect to fall for this stranger in such a short amount of time. He seems too good to be true...... But everyone has secrets... secrets that could turn around and bite you in the end. Secrets that will eventually come to light - his secrets have a story to tell.

My rating: 5/5 scarred stars

What can I say about this book? I loved it from the beginning to end.

About a girl( Mela McKinley) who has it all. A husband, that saved her from past, having a beautiful boy (Beck) that fills her heart with so much joy.
You will fall in love him with the minute you meet him. She is rebuilding herself. Making a life.
Still as we all do, fighting off some bad memories with a MIL that doesn't like her, and is always constantly reminding her of her past. Her husband will help pick her up and remind her how much she is loved.

When an accident happens a course events will change her once again. Only now is she realizing that she is capable of doing what she needs to.

Reaching out to her twin sister (Ari) whom she loves dearly, but her twins career has put some strain and distance in their relationship. However when she needed her sister the most she came to her.

Her sister has some awesome people in her life. Man, I fell in love with each and everyone one of them. They all have their own special part to the MC, and you would probably never know it by just looking at them just how meaningful they really are. Ari's Rock & MC knew what they needed to do.....and they did just that.

With some time passing and the seasons changing Mela & Beck will be introduced to Jackson Winslow.

This is the part of the story where myself as the reader got so caught up in story. What Jackson
will bring to these two people. You will immediately connect so many levels. I had so many feelings.
The way Kristi pulls this whole story together. I was glued to the pages. With her (Mela) handcuffs & guns, and his (Jackson) sense of humor, you just know at some point he is rolling his eyes at her or maybe its the other way around.

This poor girl has been through so much and little Beck too. I feel like he is four going on fourteen.
You just want to hug and squeeze them both, AND you might just want to hug Jackson to.

I loved this book so much . This is my honest review. I hope Kristi will write book two. You
know there is so much more we want to know Kristi.

I was pulled right into this story. This story contains suspense, love, secrets, heartbreak, and pain.

This is Mela and Jackson’s story. Mel is on the run with her son. After four years on the run a man shows up during a time she can’t get away. Jackson was looking for shelter from the storm. When he sees the gun, he decides that his secrets will stay secrets. But after time together in the storm secrets are revealed that could hurt them both. Is he on her side or the side that she is hiding from? What happens with all the sparks flying around? Can see ever come out of hiding or is this the end of life as she knows it now?

I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I highly recommend this book.

Safe. It's the only thing on Mela's mind after losing her husband in a car accident. She HAS to keep her baby safe from the one that wants to take him from her. This is my first book by Kristi Pelton. If this is any indication, it definitely won't be my last. The story was well written. The characters were real. It was the intense emotions I felt while reading that had me falling in love with this book. Give this book a chance so you can fall in love with it as well! I'm so excited to see what else this author has written and will write in the future!
