There is a missing force in Christianity today. It’s a critical one, and its absence has led to weak believers, disintegrating families, ineffective churches, and a decaying culture. Without it, we lack what we need to fully live as heaven’s representatives on earth.
That missing force is discipleship. In Kingdom Disciples, Tony Evans outlines a simple, actionable definition of discipleship to help the church fulfill its calling. Readers will learn:
What a disciple is
What a disciple cares about How to be a disciple and make disciples What discipleship looks like in community What the impact of discipleship on the world can be Kingdom disciples are in short supply, and the result is a legion of powerless Christians attending powerless churches, having a powerless presence in the world. The power, authority, abundance, victory, and impact God has promised will only come about when we understand and align ourselves with His definition of discipleship.
Kingdom Disciples calls believers and churches back to our primary, divinely ordained responsibility to be disciples and make disciples. Only when we take seriously this assignment will the world see heaven at work on earth.
Will you accept the assignment?
Kingdom Disciples isuseful as base material for a course on discipleship.

Anthony Tyrone "Tony" Evans Sr. is an American evangelical pastor, speaker, author, and widely syndicated radio and television broadcaster in the United States. Between 1976 and 2024, Evans served as senior pastor at the over-9,500-member Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas.
This book moved me in a major way. It was a game changer for me!!!! For about a year and a half i've grown so weary/bored/stagnant inside from the mundane church on Sunday, women's bible study on Tuesday, and Bible study Wednesday..... the same ol' ritualistic behaviors of many Christians today. Acting as if church attendance alone will guarantee us a GOOD seat in heaven. What I found in this book awakened me to the REAL and original point of Christ saving me, it wasn’t to fill a pew or put on fancy programs with my "Clique" at church. No, it was for me to become a disciple and then in turn reach out and make disciples. That is what will make us an EFFECTIVE influence in the world. The body of Christ has gotten toooo comfortable INSIDE our churches and have forgotten our sole objective. Kindgom Disciples touches every subject area you can think of. One of my favorite is how it addresses issues about allowing the word differentiate between what is from God and what is from us henceforth my favorite quote from Tonys' book "Be quick to hear God's viewpoint on a matter. Be slow to speak your viewpoint on a matter." No matter where you are in your walk with the Lord this is a good read for all. This is a call to GO! Make disciples #Trumpetsound #Blessed # Goodread #KeepingItKingdom
The Christians goal is not just to be saved by God but also to become a kingdom disciple. A representative of God on earth. Dr. Tony Evans has a godly gift to teach God's word, his writing is simple yet powerful. This book is inspiring and spoke truth into me regarding my walk with the Lord and how my life can influence non-believers to want to know Jesus. I feel very excited and determined to live my life for the glory of God and make a difference in my marriage, children, church and community. We were created for God and to give Him glory with our lives.
Have you ever wondered why there are so many churches in America, yet so few of them seem to impact our culture in a truly significant way?
In his new book Kingdom Disciples: Heaven’s Representatives On Earth, Dr. Tony Evans says that the missing key in the lives of many churches and believers is discipleship. Until we fully understand what biblical discipleship is, and align ourselves with God’s plans for discipleship, we will continue to lack the authority and power to live a transformed life and to inspire and empower change in the lives of others.
In order to become a disciple, we must first understand exactly what being a disciple means. Tony writes:
A disciple is a person who has decided that following Jesus Christ takes precedence over everything else... A disciple looks and acts like the one he or she follows.
Tony recognizes that discipleship is not easy and it does not occur overnight. The process entails being willing to take up our own cross daily to follow Jesus. It requires a commitment to die to self and to conform ourselves in to the image and likeness of Christ in terms of our character, conduct, attitudes, actions, and behavior. It involves sharing the gospel with others and teaching them Jesus’ commands so that they can become followers as well.
If you are ready to deepen your commitment to Christ – if you are ready to walk in the full power and authority of the life God envisions for you – I highly encourage you to read Kingdom Disciples and discover how God may be calling you to the next level!

"Kingdom Disciples: Heaven's Representatives on Earth" by Tony Evans is a book that I had a hard time putting down. This is the first book I have read by Dr Evans, but based on this one, I know it won't be my last.
Dr. Evans challenges us in this engaging book to go deeper in our relationship with our Lord and Savior. He accurately shows the delineation between just being a Christian and being a true Kingdom Disciple.
It's a question of counting the cost of being a disciple and Dr. Evans effectively shows the points so you are able to count the cost. Not everyone will be willing to do this, but there is a life in the side of discipleship that will give you amazing peace and joy no matter what circumstances you may be facing.
The book is written in three parts which flow seamlessly into each other and build upon each other. First, Dr. Evans covers the Foundation of Kingdom Discipleship giving us a very good understanding of what discipleship is and what it would cost us. Following that, he goes into the Formation of Kingdom Discipleship where he goes into how we can be formed into true Kingdom Disciples if we choose to do so. Finally, he goes further into the Function of Kingdom Discipleship. In this final section, Dr. Evans shows he Kingdom Discipleship should function within yourself as an individual, then within your personal family, then within your church and also within the community in which you live.
Are you ready to dive deeper? Ready to have deep intimacy with Jesus Christ and function properly in the role of a Kingdom Disciple? If so, then this book is one that you really need to read. Take your time through it as there are excellent truths in this book.
Highly recommended to say the least. I received a copy of this book in exchange for this review from Moody Publishers and all opinions are my own.
Dr. Tony Evans new book, Kingdom Disciples, contains fundamental principles that are very easy to comprehend that will help people obtain a more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Many Christian's find themselves at some point in life having the desire to grow deeper in their relationship with the Lord. Dr. Tony Evans provides us with a great challenge to adopt practices that take us from being Christians, to Kingdom Disciples.
In chapter 9, page 170 Dr. Evans says "Our trash is anything contrary to the truth of God that holds you back from completely living out your personal destiny." The Trash he is addressing are the thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes toward issues in our lives. If those items are not in alignment with God's principles we may not reach our destiny in its completion. I know I want to experience the entire destiny that God has designated for my life so, Dr. Evans challenged me to take out the trash in this chapter. I'm Confident it will challenge other readers to do the same. Dr. Evans encourages us in this book take every thought captive. Meaning to examine every thought and put it in its proper place. Thoughts lead to emotions, emotions lead to actions, actions lead to habits. If we don’t align them with what God has ordained in His word then we will never experience what it truly means to be a disciple.
The book is an amazing challenge for solid exponential spiritual growth in our walks with Jesus. The above is only one example of why this book has the potential to be life changing. The book will make great gifts for friends, loved ones, or co-workers because our goal is not only to make disciples of ourselves but other people as well. Go purchase this book today!
I have recently read one of Tony Evans’ other books and really enjoyed the read, so I wanted to try another one. I chose this one because discipleship is one of my favorite things to do and I am always trying to learn something new about discipleship or ways to make my discipleship of others more effective as a pastor and Christian. This book did not disappoint.
Evans opened his book by talking about disciples as officials in a game. Disciples choose sides in the world but they shouldn’t. This makes the Kingdom and the power of God less effective in our world. That's a factor. Less effective.
Jesus’s disciples must do whatever Jesus commands us to do. We occupy earth until His return. We crucify the flesh, kill it so it doesn’t kill us. Disciples are serious about Jesus to the point of surrendering to Him so completely that nothing this world does to us affects us as much as Jesus does. My favorite quote is “The Family resemblance should be obvious. That is discipleship. It means to so pattern are life after Christ, to follow Him so closely that you speak, act, and think like Him and help others to do the same.”
Chapter 2 talks about the primary concern of Kingdom disciples. The primary job of a disciple is to see God's Kingdom above all else. God must be first in our lies. This foundational principle for Kingdom living takes care of everything else including worry and anxiety. We must give our whole life to the Lord.
Chapter 3 is about the bold confession. He describes human history with Adam ant Christ. Satan is still trying to fool Christians on this earth. He still has power. Evans describes the difference between Jesus’s Kingdom and the kingdom of Satan. The bold confession we make is that we belong to Jesus.
In chapter 4, the author describes the disciple’s cost of commitment. Most of the disciples died for their faith. Jesus laid out the heavy and high cost of discipleship. We follow Jesus publicly. His explains what biblical love is. This was a powerful chapter about what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus.
Chapter 5 discusses our true identity. The author explains what it really means to be crucified with Christ. Our identity is tied to Christ. He describes the power of Jesus dwelling in believers. He defines and explains justification, sanctification, and how repentance works in our lives.
Chapter 6 is about intimacy with Jesus. God once a close relationship and connection with you. He goes over three passages in the Bible that expound on this relationship. He shows that intimacy and relationship with Christ are the only way a disciple grows. I think the way he describes abiding in Christ is very helpful way to understand our relationship as Jesus’s disciples.
Chapter 7 is about a steady increase. This is about what it means to become mature in Christ. The best way to grow is not just to read the Bible but do what it says, and will to work with other believers. You will see yourself grow even faster in Christ. He explains the difference between spiritual milk and spiritual meat.
Chapter 8 is about a heavenly incentive. Our change is interested in growth and assessment. He talks about our reward in heaven. We can have treasure in heaven. Jesus rewards what you do for His Kingdom. The Bible talks about it and we should not be afraid to address it.
The rest of the book deals with the function of Jesus’s Kingdom disciples by applying the principles of the book so far to the individual, family, church, and community. In chapter 9, he starts with the individual. The trash of our lives weighs us down. Jesus gives us rest, wisdom, and relief from our burdens. He explains what it means to enter gods rest. When we take Jesus’s yoke it is much easier for us.
In chapter 10, the author talks about discipleship in the family. He describes the purpose and goal of the family – how the family has dominion over the earth. He describes moving in authority. I appreciate what he teaches about being a Single disciple. Evans explains the importance and understanding of covenant within the family. Couples and families must realize that the devil is trying to destroy their relationships. Arguments are his attempt to destroy the family.
Chapter 11 describes the role of the Church in a disciple’s life. It is the place and the people that develop disciples fully. The Church teaches disciples to impact the world for Jesus. A Kingdom disciple regularly evangelizers the world around him. Some churches do not make disciples because they are focused on other things, but discipleship is the primary function for a church. He goes through the important things a disciple is and does, and how the Church helps disciples accomplish this.
Chapter 12 addresses the importance of being a Kingdom disciple in your community. You must be a visible, verbal follower of Jesus there. We must see ourselves as first, disciples and witnesses of Jesus and second, people in a certain field or job. Kingdom disciples affect every aspect of their communities. He provides a practical way to accomplish this in our communities, cities, and nation.
Tony Evans does a fine job of explaining the responsibilities and empowerment of the Christian disciple. I have enjoyed reading about discipleship and learning from him how to make better disciples. Every Christian needs to read this book, as we are all disciples and making disciples. He will help you understand your mission in making disciples. You will be fully edified by his writing.
Are you ready to upset the world? (Acts 17:6 NAS) When we become a people on fire for Jesus, so excited about Him, we shake up the church and the community. This book will propel you into your journey of being the disciple that God has called you to be. Dr. Tony Evans lays down a firm foundation with God’s truth and builds on God’s desire and God’s plan for us kingdom disciples.
Dr. Evans points out in his new book, Kingdom Disciples, just how important it is to know what a disciple is. He defines it as, “a believer in Christ who takes part in the spiritual developmental process of progressively learning to live all of life in submission to Jesus Christ.” When we make spiritual development a priority in our daily lives, living a life in submission to Jesus Christ begins to overflow into those around us…making discipleship fun, exciting and rewarding.
Through his book, Dr. Evans outlines the key elements of being an effective disciple, guiding us through each component with biblical applications. Getting personal with Dr. Tony Evans is an added bonus. As he humbly shares his personal experiences, he makes God’s desire for us and His plan for us relatable and intimate, arming us with the tools we need to succeed as kingdom disciples.
Are you ready to see your country change? Are you ready to see your community change? As Dr. Evans so perfectly states, “What we desperately need are more disciples, visible and verbal unapologetic followers of Jesus Christ.” We are on assignment, folks! Let’s get out there and make disciples for the Kingdom and upset the world!
This is a great book that challenges believers to become Kingdom disciples which can be defined as a believer in Christ who takes part in the spiritual developmental process of progressively learning to live all of life in submission to Jesus Christ. Dr. Evans book challenges you to be sold out for Christ. The goal of Kingdom Disciples is to help you have a transformed life and to replicate God’s kingdom values in the lives of others. This book reminds us that the purpose of the church is to make disciples, not just add names to the roll or increase small-group Bible study attendance. It’s not enough for the church just to be open a certain number of hours a week or offer a variety of programs. We are to make disciples. A disciple is a person who has decided that following Jesus Christ takes precedence over everything else. Are you ready to be a Kingdom Disciple? Kingdom Disciples calls believers and churches back to our primary responsibility of becoming and making disciples. Only when we take our assignment seriously will the world see heaven at work on earth. Will you answer the call? If so read this book today.
excellent! This book is full of wisdom. If you want to radically change your walk with Jesus and the walk of those around you then read this. If you are content with the status quo...don't. Kingdom Disciples is truly how we transform ourselves and the lives with those around us. It helps us to remember our first true love, Jesus and that He came for us personally. That is what discipleship is about...a personal relationship in the ways of God and helping to cultivate in the lives of those God has given us to encounter and become in relationship with. It is about the day to day life that we live in Christ and encourage others walk out. This book brings confirmation and conviction for those who have a heart for discipleship and a longing to see others have the same. There are so many profound thoughts that you can't choose just one. Read it, highlight, underline, sit on it, allow God to reveal His heart for you and His people in it. You will not be disappointed.

Curious why Christianity seems so powerless in our culture? Interested in learning more about discipleship? Need to be motivated to make disciples? This is your book! It will fire you up to change the world through Jesus Christ!
I agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Evans' premise. The point of the book is that kingdom disciples are in short supply and that too many Christians are professing in name only without the power and authority of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Section 3 was my favorite and it fleshes out what kingdom discipleship looks like individually, in the family, and in the church.
This book dispels positive Christian cliches and "name it and claim it" theology, instead proving from Jesus's own words that discipleship comes at a cost but that the cost is well worth paying for our Savior and Lord.
I rated it at 4 stars instead of 5 only because it was a heavy read for me (even though I noticed some others said it was an easy read for them). I had to read some sections several times to really digest the material. Additionally, the first chunk of the book is spent convincing the reader that many professing Christians aren't kingdom disciples. My guess is that most people who are interested in this book are already convinced of that.
Overall, this book gives a great definition of kingdom disciples and encourages readers to be Heaven's representatives on Earth. I recommend it!
Kingdom Disciples: Heaven's Representatives On Earth by Tony Evans is more than just a book on discipleship. While Tony does explain what discipleship is and personal steps toward becoming a kingdom disciple, he also covers ways that your personal example can and should influence your family, church, and community at large - as well as the ideals, values, and actions that will show the rest of the world that you are a Christ follower.
Combining personal stories with Biblical truths, Tony candidly reminds us that being a kingdom disciple is not for the faint of heart; it requires a willing sacrifice of everything that you have and are without Christ - placing to rest every aspect of our lives that are within our personal control in order to turn the load over to Jesus and truly follow Him.
While I know without a doubt that I fall epically short of the expectations laid out for a kingdom disciple, I found this book to be an enlightening read that will hopefully help influence my journey more toward God and less toward my self and other worldly constructs and values. I believe that, when read with the spirit of an openness to change, Kingdom Disciples has the potential to greatly influence and encourage Christians seeking to bring forth God's kingdom here on earth. 4/5 stars.
*Disclaimer: I received a complimentary print copy of this book from Moody Publishers for the purpose of this honest review. All opinions are my own.*
In this book Dr. Tony Evans challenges Christians to be transformed not only by passively believing in the gospel, but active discipleship. In many ways this is a wakeup call to American Christians who have been content with a powerless form of Christianity. Through Scripture and illustration he demonstrates that we often sin by not obeying the command to be disciples and to make disciples. This book reads like a powerful sermon, and can be read quickly, but I think the impact will be for families, small groups and churches to read and process this book together.
There are few points where I respectfully disagree with Dr. Evans' interpretation of Scripture, but I still believe that his book is worth reading. One point is that Dr Evans seems to leave a lot of room for someone to be saved but show almost no fruit. He calls it sinful but I wonder if their salvation is in question (e.g. how can you truly believe but not be changed by your faith?) if there is no discipleship going on. For example, his interpretation of Romans 10:9-10 (page 70) separates confess and believe as two separate actions. Dr. Evans writes, "You must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to go to heaven, but you must confess the Lord Jesus Christ to get heaven to come to you." In this case, there seems to be two classes of Christians, ones who believe, and ones who not only believe but confess Christ.
What an excellent book on discipleship! Whilst looking for a book on discipleship I came across this book by Tony Evans and decided to read it after reading the description-it did not disappoint. I fear discipleship is neglected in the church today. Few churches point their focus in producing true disciples of Christ and making the Great Commission a priority. But discipleship is not only important but a command and a mark of true faith in our lives.
In "Kingdom Disciples" Dr. Evans addresses discipleship in 3 parts: The Foundation of Kingdom Discipleship, The Formation of Kingdom Discipleship, and The Function of Kingdom Discipleship. He explains what discipleship means and personal application using the Scriptures for examples. Dr. Evans also goes on to explain how a true disciple is to make more disciples and the church's role in discipleship.
I like this quote from the book: "One mark of a person who wants to follow Christ, one absolute necessity for being His disciple, is to be His witness and testimony in all you do."
I recommend this book for those who are looking to learn what discipleship is all about. Dr. Evans has done a great work in presenting this material in a well- rounded way that covers any question you may have about the topic.
I received a copy from Moody in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
Dr. Evans' book, Kingdom Disciples, has reinforced to me the importance of living a life fully committed to Christ. I once mistakenly believed that being a true disciple of Jesus was just too hard. That it would require more than I have to give. After reading this book, along with studying the scriptures cited, I realize, once again, that it is too hard for me on my own and always will be. Apart from Christ and His sweet and precious abiding Spirit, I am useless in His Kingdom. But, as long as I remain completely dependent on Him, understanding He is worthy of all my love and devotion, He will delight in using me for His purposes. Dr. Evans has, through this book, allowed the Lord to speak to the heart of all Christ followers who are willing to submit themselves to Him through seeking a deep, intimate relationship. Living as a kingdom disciple is not the result of forced actions/obedience to a distant god but living a life where Christlike actions/obedience are the Holy Spirit-led consequences of seeking the one and only true God. Intimacy with Jesus Christ through His Word and prayer is essential to kingdom discipleship.
This is an excellent book. It was well written and Dr. Tony Evans hit the nail when he said Discipleship was the missing key. I will agree. We have strayed away from true Discipleship and being true disciples. We as believers are doing what we want instead of doing what we do, say, eat or drink for the glory of God.
We do not love the way Jesus said to do. We lack character, attitude and the holy living as Jesus set the example. Being a Disciple for God is costly but it is worth the authority and power. No matter how others may think of you, Jesus us looking at the inside.
Very powerful book. I encourage all to get a copy caused America will be a better country if everyone will adhere to the calling of God according to his or her talents.
Excellent book Dr. Tony Evans!

Dr. Evans connects with the reader by using familiar language and stories that help reveal the essence of what it means to be a kingdom disciple. This is a great read for all Christians to remind them of their call to spread the gospel and represent Jesus Christ as his representatives right now on this Earth. This book captured the importance of building a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It helped me remember that we can have an impact on the world when we live through the power of the holy spirit. The reading has inspired me to become more active in the community by practicing my commitment to Christ and helping others see a difference in my life. Dr. Evans shared strategies and wisdom that we can use personally, as a family, a church and a community that will help us stay focused on God's purpose.
There is so much conviction in this book. Even as a Christian that hears His voice and sees His hands move in my life constantly, I draw so much from this book on how to make a greater impact for His Kingdom. I completely love this book, as so many of Pastor Evans books. It's not about if you are ready or not to be His Disciple, we are all called to His side to disciple others. It doesn't require anything out of the ordinary if He doesn't speak it into your heart, we disciple every day in our interactions with others everywhere we go. All it takes is obedience to His word and His voice. You have to read this! If you want to grow deeper in your relationship with Christ, see His power work in your life, and let His power work through you, this is the key to start you on the right path.
True to form, Dr. Tony Evans writes the way he preaches. His latest book is no exception. The message may not be a popular one but it is definitely a necessary one. We need to go back to basics. This is what rings loud and clear throughout this book.
The early church knew how to follow Jesus' command: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations..." Matthew 28:19 Somehow we have wavered from God's original plan.
Dr. Evans breaks it down so we understand what it really means to be a disciple. He then gives us the tools to share Jesus with others. This is where the rubber meets the road. At times very convicting, this is a guidebook that everyone needs to own. Dr. Evans never disappoints.
If you are a believer in Christ and you look around at the world wondering why we are in the state we are, this book is for you. We have to many church memebers, but not enough disciples of Christ. We are more than willing to check off our list to go to church on Sunday morning, and feel that we've done our part. However, Dr. Tony Evans challenges you to be a visable disciple of Christ. It's more than just someone sitting in a pew once maybe twice a week. We are supposed to be a light shining on hill.
This book will challenge your walk with Christ. Christianity isn't about being comfortable. It's about crucifiying our wants on the cross and follow Him. This book challenged me to walk with Him and not just check Him off of a list.
The latest in Dr. Evans’s Kingdom series, Kingdom Disciples clearly outlines what it means to be a disciple, what exactly is discipleship, and how to develop and implement discipleship in one’s family, church, and community.
This book is very equipping in that Dr. Evans wants to make sure the reader is fully prepared for making true disciples. Only after he has clearly laid out what it means to be a disciple does he begin discussing ways to make disciples of others. I found his explanations to be very insightful and practical.
This book could be used as an individual study or for a group class. It is solidly Biblical, convicting, and hope-giving.
I gratefully received this book as an eARC from the author, publisher, and NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
A must read for Pastors and Church Leaders. As an Ordained Chaplain, Certified Christian Life Coach and Elder who is following God's calling to mentor and disciple, this book is straight forward on indicating that we need to be about our Father's business fulfiling the Great Commission. Kingdom Disciples will motivate and educate on what it takes to be a success for God's Kingdom. It is direct and to the point. The new catalyst is missions in churches, but the missionary church will fail if first we do not make disciples and teach them to be disciplemakers. Chaplain Dennis James Las Vegas, Nevada
Kingdom Disciples is a “call to action” for all Christians. Dr. Tony Evans challenges readers to examine their lives against the word of God, as if looking in a mirror, and to make the necessary adjustments until our lives reflect the image of Jesus Christ. The biblical principles are explained using modern day analogies, such as football, so that anyone from new converts to mature Christians can understand them. Once you read this book you will be moved to become a Kingdom Disciple, make disciples and change the world!
Every Christian serious about developing a closer walk with the Lord needs to have this book in their library.
For me this book is right on par with another couple of great well written, Holy Spirit inspired contemporary books: Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God, written by Richard and Henry Blackaby and The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.
This book will challenge you to move out of your current spiritual comfort zone and grow, grow, grow in your intimacy with God.
Don't just read this book, study to know the information in it. I have been a discipled believer for many years and I agreed with the first part of the book that works through the development of a disciple. What caught my attention was the last two chapters on church and community. Here Tony reveals the true status of the church today and what is needed to strengthen the body of Christ. I highly recommend this book to new believers as well as those who have walked with the Lord for a long time. Kingdom Disciples, it is time to rise up and make disciples.
Our purpose on this earth is simple by being disciples of God . The book discusses how we can change the world one by one just by following the original masterpiece, Jesus, and displaying his character in everywhere we go. This is not only something we do for church but in our marriages, homes, schools and work and the marketplaces. The concept that the author present is simple. Just be obedient and follow the Lord. I feel this book is good for those who are looking to change their surroundings by being Heaven's representatives here on earth.
In Kingdom Disciples, Tony Evans calls us to a deeper commitment to God as we sacrifice ourselves and commit fully to Him. He says that a kingdom disciple should aim to “replicate God’s kingdom values in the lives of others.” He explains how sacrifice is needed but that true surrender leads to freedom from worry. This book is full of gems like this to digest slowly and it is well worth reading. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
If you are looking to go deeper in your walk with God, this book is a great place to start. You will be challenged to be more than a "Sunday Christian". Dr. Tony Evans is plain spoken and straight to the point with practical wisdom, that if you apply it, will change your walk with God for the better. Highly recommend this book.
