A traditional Regency romance, drawing room rather than bedroom.

Grace’s four older sisters have married and moved away, and life is very quiet and boring. It’s so stifling being female, occupying herself with her tapestry or painting, when she’d much rather have been a soldier, galloping about with a sword in her hand. She wouldn’t mind marrying, because who wants to be an old maid? But all her suitors are dullards who are only interested in her dowry. If only something exciting would happen!

George Graham is at a loose end, too, now that his Oxford cronies are settling into boring domesticity. But when he learns that a valuable diamond necklace may have been hidden somewhere in his parent’s house, he’s fired with enthusiasm for the search, and lively Grace Allamont is just the girl to help him. Along the way, they find plenty of adventure, lots of trouble — and a most unexpected love.

I live in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with my husband. I like chocolate, whisky, my Kindle, massed pipe bands, long leisurely lunches, chocolate, going places in my campervan, eating pizza in Italy, summer nights that never get dark, wood fires in winter, chocolate, the view from the study window looking out over the Moray Firth and the Black Isle to the mountains beyond. And chocolate. I dislike driving on motorways, cooking, shopping, hospitals.

The lovely lady in my avatar is Archduchess Clementina of Austria (1798-1881), Princess of Salerno, painted around 1839.

NOTE: I read Regency romances as well as write them, and I review them all on my website, or you can find them right here on Goodreads on my real-name account at Pauline M. Ross.

The family saga continues! This series has been an absolute delight and on top of spirited Grace’s love story, we have Grace and George sleuthing to find a missing diamond necklace, a sketchy traveling preacher, highwaymen robbing travelers, Vivienne’s continued illness, Lady Sara’s curiously erratic behavior (is she switching places with her twin?), and the charming cameos of all of the Carrbridge brothers.

We also get to see Cousin Mary and Osbourne for a brief time.

What a treat these books are!

Grace and George Graham
Grace is the 5th Allamont daughter and it’s her turn to find a husband if she and her sister want to get their share of the dowry. Grace is impulsive and ready for any adventure. She thinks she doesn’t want to marry because she will lose her freedom. George is a neighbor whom the Allamonts have grown up with. He is the heir of the family baronetcy. George is also always getting into mischief and finds an ally in Grace. The mischief begins when George’s uncle visits to tell the family that Grandma left them the family diamonds but she has hidden them somewhere, most likely in their house. George decides he is going to find the diamonds and convinces his parents (Sir Matthew and Lady Graham) to let him invite Grace to stay with them to help him. At the same time a cousin, Ann, shows up unannounced with the intention of finding the diamonds for herself. Eventually Ann finds the diamonds before G and g (with the Graham parents’ helpful hint) and heads home the very next day. G and g decide they will not let Ann steal the diamonds and chase after her. While they are chasing Anne g comes up with the idea that they should pretend to be highwaymen and rob Anne of the diamonds. When they do not encounter Ann on the road and their carriage breaks they are stranded miles from home and are forced to stay the night at a local inn. The next morning they realize that Ann is also in town staying at another inn and g says she wants to try to rob Ann again. So they set out to be highway men again and succeed in stealing back the diamonds. A’s they are celebrating their success someone else shows up to take the diamonds from them. “Real” highway men win had been posing as traveling preachers. On turns out to be a cousin of the Allamonts (Mark) and the other is his “mentor”, Mr Wright. In a standoff with pistols Mark gets shot in the shoulder and Mr Wright makes off with the diamonds. G and g take M to his sister’s (Mary) home to get him help and confess to her all that has happened. She agrees to help them conceal their overnighter and role in the robbery/shootout by inviting g to stay with her for a few days and acting like they were there the whole time. Meanwhile Ann figures out who actually robbed her and comes back to tell Sir Matthew about the robbery and overnighter and that she wants the diamonds back or she will tell everyone about G&g’s escapade. Sir Matthew reveals that the diamonds that they’ve been fighting over are fake. Grandma had given them the real diamonds years ago and they were distributed to all the girls in the family. Ann keeps her promise and spreads the news about the overnighter and g is subbed at the next assembly. Her marquess brother in law and his brothers save the day by showing up and dancing with her. After several days apart G&g realize they can’t live without each other and they get engaged. Graham is actually really sweet with her.
Other things to remind myself later:
-Wright the Highwayman with Mark was introduced at the beginning of the story as Mark’s spiritual tutor to be traveling preachers. He cozied up to Grace but made himself too familiar and she had him literally thrown out of the house. He promised revenge later. At the end of the book. Grace runs into Wright as she is walking in the fields and he attacks her. She gets away and her family menfolk go looking for him but he gets away.
-Aunt Vivienne is pregnant but gets sick and dies.
-Aunt Lucy (dad’s estranged sister) shows up and tells them that Frank and Ernest stayed with her for a couple of years after they left home but hasn’t seen them since. She is very interested in what the will says, word for word.
-Lady Sara still leaves often to go to London. She is happier there.

Grace, the 5th sister to try and find a husband she could love like her older sisters in order to fulfill her dreadful dead sire's will and yet manage to break the dead man's control from the grave was not in love and had no plans to marry... apparently the same could be true with Hope. For the will's conditions were that the sisters must marry according to age to get their inheritance within 5 years to their father's death anniversary or marry any of their 3 Allamont cousins to secure the estate and the runaway brothers must appear within the same period or the estate would go to the Church. As Grace and Hope were aspiring spinsters both may have just the thousand pounds each... monies that were found on their father's library with each moneybox labeled with each sister's name. At this point, Grace had rejected maybe her 15th basket~scrambler and maybe clumsily have torn her dress for the nth time since birth, having been saddled with the un~likely virtuous name as Grace... though all the Allamont siblings were named alphabetically after a virtue and were in fact opposite in nature as their names, truth be told... well, creeping amid the dust and dark secret passageways of Graham Hall with George while looking for the hidden Durmaston Diamonds as an antidote to boredom, love finally crept into Grace. A fun and entertaining adventure with Grace and George and to be shocked by sundry other revelations pertaining to the runaway Allmont brothers and salacious businesses and disreputable relatives and the like.

Grace is outspoken, spirited, and clumsy. Bored by the daily routine of country life and forbidden from going to London, she longs for adventure. She is the next sister to find a husband, but she has no desire to do so.

Neighbor and lifelong friend, George Graham, learns from his parents that a diamond necklace may be hidden somewhere in their rambling estate. He and Grace begin a search, which they both consider to be great fun. Until Cousin Anne arrives. Famous for stealing anything she can get her hands on, they must conceal their own search while keeping an eye on her sticky fingers.

Misadventure follows when Grace and George take matters into their own hands.

This fifth book in the Allamont Hall series is the story of Grace. I picks up right after book 4.5, cousin Mary’s story. After 17 suitors have proposed in order to secure Graces’ twenty thousand pound dowry, Grace is disgusted with money hungry men and is looking for some fun. When the Grahams invite her to stay for a while, Grace and George, lifelong friends embark on a huge search to find a missing diamond necklace. I loved Graces spunk and zest for life. The story was predictable but such a fun read.

Not great literature, but it is great fun. This series is far more inconsistent than the later Sons of the Marquess series. I liked this one, because I liked the friendship between Grace and George from the beginning. Plus, I like how Kingswood has each story have its own HAE, but continues a story arc across the whole series. What *is* the deal with the missing brothers, what is up with Mama?

These are nothing permanent for me, but they are a charming way to spend an evening or two.....

Grace

Grace being the fifth daughter to marry to get her dowry. Of course there were six sisters and they had to get married in the proper sequence. The eldest before the second and so on. For a while I didn’t think Grace was going to marry. Grace was a wild girl with George Graham along. He was also wild . They got into so much trouble. They were more like best friends. Sneaking around and laughing. Finally they fell in love and now engaged.

Spirited

Grace was definitely not the placid blushing lady. She had great difficulty minding her manners and being a shrinking violet. Finding a groom interested in her as anything other than her dowry was a farce! She wanted to be in love and be loved. She had many offers but no one mentioned being in love with her. No mention of the happily ever after. Where would she find anyone interesting enough to consider without going to London, which Mother forbids.

I highly recommend . A very enjoyable read.

Once I start reading a book by Mary Kingswood. I cannot put it down till I finish . I really love this series. I never knew what to expect as I started reading about Grace & George. I was pleasantly surprised . They search for a missing heirloom together. As try to stop a thief. They find themselves in a dangerous situation and trying to avoid a scandal. Now I am going to start on the final book in the series .

I think Grace may be the prototype for every spunky sporty adventure-loving heroine in Agatha Christie's stories. Not content to sit and lounge around at home, Grace is always up for an adventure with her friend George Graham. Despite her appearance, always having something out of place on her person, Grace enjoys socialising and is perhaps the least judgemental sister of Allamont Hall. She takes easily to her aunt Lucy, the only positive relative we have seen from her father's side.

Grace's story is interesting in that unlike the revelations in which her sisters discover more of their extended family (her father and mother having isolated themselves from their families), more events occur to progress what's currently happening to Allamont hall and various relatives. Grace's adventures do land her in trouble, but also force her to examine her feeling towards herself and others.
This is a more fun read, less serious than the previous books.

The most fun

At this point, I believe Grace is my favorite of the sisters. I like a girl with spirit and joy, and she is well matched with her young man. To be honest, I almost stopped with Amy’s story….but I’m happy I had the grit to continue. The family has grown on me, even with some of the strange fits and starts of some of them.

Very enjoyable!

I think I would’ve liked it more if Grace hadn’t been so reckless, but I think she grew up during the length of the novel, so I have to give her that. Aside from that, this book was good fun!

4 stars.

A bit slow

Like some of the others in this series, the pacing was slow, the antics of George and Grace a bit silly, and the usual last minute complication that gets quickly resolved.

Very sweet story

This is one of my favorites of the series - this and Belle’s. In this one, a childhood friendship grows into something more. The added mystery of the missing necklace adds some variety to the story line. Cousin Anne is a nightmare of a house guest.

Free to be who you are

I enjoyed Grace's personality. How restrictive life can be when you're constantly being measured to a strict social standard. I was worried that Grace wouldn't see a happy ending.
