In the 3rd novel of the Tom March Adventure series, we join Tom as he risks his life to save a black slave on the run from an evil southern plantation owner as well as a young Chinese cook who was sold by his poor, starving parents to the abusive captain of a whaling ship.
This series has been excellent the third book does not disappoint. When Tom Marsh tries to open a new route to supply miners in the area, some of his men are taken by bounty hunters. It is up to Tom to get his men back and deal with the men who took them. The author captures the flavor of the time period. The book moves a good pace that keeps you interested. I highly recommend this book for fans of the western genre.
This is the first book I’ve read by John Rose Putnam, but it certainly won’t be the last. The Yuba Trouble is a simple story of a less complicated time and it did what a good book should – it took me out of the present and gave me a glimpse at life in mid-1800’s California Gold Rush days. I found it especially enjoyable because my family is from that part of the state. I had no trouble envisioning the scenery the characters passed through in their harrowing and frenzied pursuit for gold.
The protagonist, Tom Marsh, has a refreshing perspective; his concerns are so different in most ways than ours today. What shines through is his sense of duty, his allegiance with the underdogs, and his longing to be with the girl he loves. It’s a satisfying tale in every way, told in a believable fashion. I’m looking forward to reading more adventures by this author.
I love westerns and this is a good one though not as well presented as the first of the Tom Marsh books I read. I was surprised to find a lot of editing errors, especially in the first half of the book. Even with those errors, which I found somewhat distracting as a result of my remembrance of how well presented the other book was, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the characters and the twists and turns of the book. My brother lives in modern day Grass Valley and my Grandfather, Al Rourke, and his mother, lived near the Yuba River outside of Grass Valley. I have been in the areas which are described by the author in detail and I enjoyed the book more because of my connections. A good read overall, certainly good enough for me to give it a five star rating. Comment|
You should probably read this series in order--which, of course I did not. The story flows from one to the next with really wonderful characters! This one pits Tom March against several really bad men. While on a mule team drive to sell supplies to gold miners Tom is forced to recognize that hate of people different from them is all too prevalent. Then the action really begins when Tom has to rescue two of his friends who were taken. He has heard from the woman he loves and knows he had to make enough money to be able to bring her back and treat her like a queen-so he has to stay alive as well!! This series is definitely worth reading!!
A JRP. Western Adventure (TMAB - 3)/Yuba Valley, CA/A Chinese Chef With A Reward on His Head / Bounty Hunters/The Chase/The Rescue
JRP. has. penned the third novel in the Tom Marsh series. The firefighting company are keeping the three young men busy. However, with their profits they begin to invest in the city and the Yuba Valley. A Chi see Chef is hired to work in their restaurant, but the bounty hunters are soon on his trail. They kidnap the cook and the chase through the Yuba Valley begins. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
A good story and, so nice to read a well written and edited western. Usually the reason for my 2 & 3 star reviews are because of the bad writing. It may be a good storyline but the lack of editing gets too me. Enjoyed this one, looking forward to others by this author.
This is a historical western novel which describes life during the Gold Rush Days in the Yuba River Valley, California. Tom Marsh is a young man who drives a mule train to different sites offering supplies they may need...including some food. Tom Marsh has grown into a man of good principles with compassion for others. But he's also able to bring justice to those who are evil. Tom learns that a Chinese cook has been kidnapped from one of the camps. The cook had previously been on a whaleboat where the captain was very cruel. Upon reaching San Francisco, he escaped and made it to the gold mine territory. Tom is now out to find the cook in the rugged hills west of Sacramento. Love these western stories by John Rose Putnam. He tells it like it was! Highly recommend.
The Tom Marsh Adventure books (1,2&3) are basically westerns that take place during the California Gold Rush. The series was enjoyable with likeable main characters and dastardly villains. There were plenty of twists and turns that kept me turning my kindle pages. There was also a smattering of romance woven into the story. A good read!
A 5 star rating is fitting for this thrilling story with good characters displaying strong values in making choices that are difficult in a rugged world. Identifying with the heroes and the exciting action pulls the reader forward making it hard to put the book down.
