One Summer Night by Caridad Pineiro At the Shore series book #1. Contemporary romance. Second chance. The families of Maggie Sinclair and Owen Pierce own houses side by side on the Jersey shore. Maggie and Owen were once friends but a feud between their parents had them going in different directions before their college years. Now, many years later, Maggie and Owen are again friends and Owen is willing to help Maggie with her family business, even when it’s against his father’s wishes. Owen knows and trusts Maggie and is willing to put his long time friendship on the line.
I admired Owen and his ability to finally step up and ignore his father’s proclamation. It helped knowing how Owen felt. But they both knew that lies, or lack of full disclosure was going to come back and bite them. I don’t think Maggie was fair so I didn’t her actions. Fortunately it’s a romance, and the two work out their relationship and get a second chance at love and a future together.
Throughout the story, we found out quite a bit about friends Connie and Emma. There were a few intriguing descriptions along the way that made me realize this was a series and that I would be reading book 2 next.

At the Shore Series: One Summer Night (Book 1) What Happensin Summer (Book 2)
It's been a while since I've read Caridad Pineiro so when I saw One Summer Night come up for review I thought I'd give it a try.
I don't always care to look at the blurb of the book I'm reviewing because I like to go in cold. Sometimes I feel you can learn way to much from the blurb. So when I started this one I didn't even know who the characters were.
Unfortunately that didn't work out for me. I felt so lost, like I was just dropped into the story and placed where I didn't belong. I had no choice but to read the blurb.
That happening doesn't mean I will automatically not like the book, it just mean...I was lost.
It happens to the best of us. After reading the blurb I got the picture somewhat and figured out who the main characters were. All helpfully for me to continue. I will tell you I really liked Owen and Maggie, I could feel their attraction jump off the pages of the book. You knew these two are meant for each other, now if they could only let the past go and move on.
Don't get me wrong, they have a past. It's hard to like someone when your whole family hates their family.
The story moved quickly and you moved with it. By the end of the story I forgot the beginning and feeling lost but I did feel somewhat that the story could be more original. Doesn't mean that I didn't like it, just that it's nothing new. Sometimes stories work out that way and you have to pray that the characters help you through it.
In One Summer Night that's just what happened. I liked the characters so much I didn't care about the plot. I'm glad I read One Summer Night and met both Owen and Maggie. I really liked Maggie's friends too so I will be trying Laws of Attractions next!
One Summer Night first won me over with the pretty cover. I adore the beach so anything with a beach feel is an instant must read for me.
Luckily, One Summer Night has much more to it than just a pretty cover. Sweet, romantic, and charming, One Summer Night is the perfect enemies to lovers romance.
One Summer Night introduces the alternating perspectives of Maggie Sinclair and Owen Pierce, two adults who've been caught in the crossfire of their fathers' feud since they were children. I liked Maggie from the moment she was introduced. She was loyal, sweet as sugar, and determined. Better yet, she was a good friend, daughter, and employer. It added a lot to her character to see her relationships with her friends, father, and employees develop over the course of the book; however, I will say nothing had me chuckling more than when her and her best friends got together. They were a funny crew. I enjoyed getting to know Owen as well. Fierce, protective, and ambitious, Owen is the prime example of a swoon-worthy male lead. I loved seeing him and Maggie interact, and just like with Maggie, I love that Caridad Pineiro added in a special bond between Owen and someone else - in this case, his brother.
The plot in One Summer Night was the typical enemies to lovers romance, but as someone who never gets old of that step-up, I eagerly ate up every word of it. It was interesting to learn about what the feud was about. It wasn't revealed at the start so there was some time to play around with some theories. I also enjoyed that Owen and Maggie's struggles at work where chronicled. I think in some ways there something everyone can relate to. The constant switch between settings also had me happy. I loved the combo between the bustling streets of New York City and the idyllic, picture perfect beach house setting. Plus it didn't hurt that Caridad's description were rich. Last but not least, the romance was great. I enjoyed the steamy will-they-or-won't they aspect in the beginning, and it was fun to see the drama from what Owen was hiding unfold.
One Summer Night is a perfect for readers of the romance genre, especially those like me who love a good setting! I simply can't wait to see who's story is up next. I'm hoping for Connie and Jonathon (I think I know what she's hiding at the end, and if I'm right, it's certainly going to make for an interesting time!).
A Romeo and Juliet-esque plot set against the Jersey shore and uptown New York City sounded like just the thing especially when you throw in an author I've been meaning to try for some time. One Summer Night had some sparkle and sizzle even while following the path of many romances that have come before it.
Owen and Maggie grew up side by side as friends and a tentative shot at first love while their father's feuded, but then they drifted apart and haven't crossed paths much until now when Maggie's family's business is in trouble and it is Owen who can come to the rescue.
From the wedding encounter and all the way through, I found myself liking and cheering on both Maggie and Owen. They come from powerful business families and enjoy following in their respective father's footsteps though the feud isn't something either buy into, thankfully. I had a suspicion of what it was really all about and I wasn't wrong. Just like I wasn't wrong of how the romance would progress or what would cause the final conflict from early on. Yep, you guessed it, One Summer Night was very predictable. I confess that this did dampen some of my enthusiasm and I skimmed a tad, but this did not quench my interest completely and I found many things to enjoy and love about this one.
I loved Maggie and Owen, her circle of friends and his brother. I can't wait to get the next story seeing how Maggie's lawyer friend and Owen's brother seemed to be showing some sizzle of their own in the background. I also loved the settings of the shore and the city, the upper class and the business settings, Maggie's struggle to keep her mother's dream- the store- alive, both their finding themselves and standing up to unreasonable parents, and just the sparkle of the story.
So, in summary, I liked it more than loved it, but there was plenty to keep me engaged and willing to go back for more. Contemporary romance fans are definitely a great fit.
My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
One Summer Night is a sweet romance, featuring the story of Maggie and Owen. Childhood friends torn apart by their parents feud, they reconnect as adults.
Both working for their respective family businesses, the two must navigate through life, trying to be together and keep their families happy.
One Summer Night was a cute story, but felt a bit predictable. The characters were fun and intriguing. I really hope to read about Maggie’s friends next

I'm so sorry to give this book this rating because it had an amazing premise but I couldn't care less for the characters, it felt like it was endless and it took me ages to read, the main couple had zero chemistry and the changes in perspectives that lasted five seconds got very annoying at the middle point of the book.
One Summer Night was just the light read I was looking for. Told from dual points of view, Maggie and Owen’s story will grab you from the first page and will leave you begging for more.
From the moment we meet Maggie and Owen, the sparks between the two of them are instant. There is history there and a connection that is just begging to be explored. The only problem….their families can’t stand each other. Despite their family issues, Maggie and Owen begin to spend time with one another. It’s risky. It’s complicated. But, some of the best risks are worth taking. Will Maggie and Owen take a chance on each other or will their family rivalries throw everything away? There’s only one way to find out….
Overall, I really enjoyed One Summer Night. I thought the story-line was a lot of fun and was excited to see where Owen and Maggie’s story was going to go. I enjoyed the slow burn to Maggie and Owen’s relationship. The sparks were there, but I appreciated that these two didn’t immediately jump in. And to me that made the chemistry between the two of them burn hotter. You just knew they would be off the charts together, you just had to wait for them to give in and take the jump.
One Summer Night is well written and is the perfect light read. One Summer Night has just the right balance of family drama, a touch of angst and just the right amount of sexiness. I think this series is off to a promising start and I’m excited to see where it will go next.
*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*
Sassy and sweet.Seductive and fun is this book. The characters draw you in with their personality and problems but also how the carry themselves. Each one has you liking them no matter what.
The story is of Owen and Maggie and how they get a chance to be together in spite of the feud between their families that has kept them apart.
Maggie is a strong, stubborn at times but sweet character. I didn’t exactly have warm and fuzzy feelings for her towards the end when she was being rigid and not willing to listen to Owen because she felt she knew it all. She didn’t take into consideration what Owen was going through and she wasn’t one to talk because she hid things as well. She was also very unforgiving, Owen had risked alot for her and was still doing so. He even went as far as setting her free just so she could get her head out of the sand and see that his feelings are real and he isn’t lying. She should have listened to him but she just didn’t want to. Overall though she is a adorable character. Very smart and witty. I love her passion for her familie’s stores and how much family means to her. Her friends are fiercely protective and loyal to her.
Owen is strong and sweet. He doesn’t try to rock the boat but when he sees Maggie again he can’t help it. He wants to explore his feelings but is scared of losing his dad. So when he sees Maggie is in trouble with her business he devises a plan to be able to explore his feelings and keep his dad happy. And it works but his guilt does lay heavy with him.
I love the dynamic between Owen and his brother Jonathon. They are opposites in every way but they are there for one another no matter what. Owen is protective and respects his brother. He is so proud of all he has accomplished. It is Jonathon that helps Owen get perspective needed to have his happy ever after. We also see a little romance tension between Jonathon and one of Maggie’s friends that crackles when they are in the room.
Maggie and Owen’s chemistry is off the charts. As they explore their feelings you can see that they are meant to be and always have been. They let go of their fear and explore who they are to one another. It is crazy how they end up together and at times you are waiting for the shoe to drop just not as it has. Owen has such confidence and belief in Maggie he does all he can to help her. Even risking his livelihood, heart and losing his father for her. i love the respect he has for her and the support he gives her is amazing. This is why how she was towards the end was so disheartening. He risked so much for her. the story is sexy, sweet, and entertaining. This is the story of Maggie and Owen- how they fall in love, almost lose one another, mature and how Maggie flourishes under Owen but also saves her business. It is about falling in love and taking risks but also friendship and forgiveness. A sassy fun sexy entertaining read.
A sweet little book about forbidden love. Though, they were best friends in a way as kids. They always played together. Then he did not show up at the beach or stayed away. And now they are grown ups who can tell their dads to shove it. I mean come on, dads. Ha. SO yes they do not really care.
Maggie loves her work, but her dad can be a handful and does not like changes. And the business is not going well. She is so busy, so stressed, and I must say, work really played a big part in this book. At least her did. His, well he was at work, but we did not see as much as we did with her work. And her love for it really made me like her.
Owen works with his dad in rel estate. And sure he is busy too, but not as stressed as a certain Maggie. He is more stressed cos his dad is being a pain. He was a really sweet guy, normal you know.
And these two meet here and there and finally take the chance to see if there can be more. Fathers be damned.
And there is lie that will cause drama, but it is not a lie told to her, but still she gets all angry and honestly, there drama was a bit forced. Why was she angry over it? It was not about her directly. Well it is and is not. But it is not a lie told to her. And I felt she over reacted. I am glad that it was over quickly. It is not a spoiler cos when you see it you know that is the thing that will cause drama.
Friends, the beach, and romance. What more can one want.
Narrator Worthington I took me a while to warm up to her. I mean I liked her voice from the start, but her male and female voices sounded the same. Her female voices sounded the same. Which means that almost everyone sounded the same. But she was a truly good narrator that still made me enjoy it.
As kids, Maggie and Owen summered at the Jersey Shore. They were friends and played together even though their parents were estranged. In particular, Owen’s father was viciously angry at his former friend and partner, Maggie’s father.
This enmity makes adult Owen and Maggie’s relationship very difficult. Only by misleading his father about his motivations and risking his place in the family firm is Owen able to date Maggie without major family conflict. Maggie has her own struggles with her father. She needs to update their department stores in order to make them profitable (or at least not lose so much money) and save her highly mortgaged condo and family beach house; her father desperately fears changing the store his beloved wife built.
Maggie has 3 close friends, single career women, who support and encourage each other. As they find relationships with the men in their lives, they fear the loss of their freedom and their closeness as women. This story has traditional romance structure combined with aspects of Romeo and Juliet and Sex and the City. The characters are likeable, ambitious, hardworking, and career driven. The young women support one another and share their dreams. Owen and his brother are close and support each other to make up for the aloofness and criticism of their father.
One Summer Night looks to be the beginning of a linked series. Recommended.

One Summer Night by Caridad Pineiro At the Shore #1
This book begins and ends with a wedding. It has ups and downs. It is a bit like a modern day Romeo and Juliet story without the death of both the main characters and the families in discord is all due to their fathers having a falling out over 30 years before the story begins.
Rachel is dealing with a family company on the brink of disaster with a father unwilling to move in a direction that might save the business. She has friends that will star in the future books of the series but are also there to support her during the telling of her story.
Owen also has a huge company that he runs with his father but where his father’s goal is to break Maggie’s father Owen’s is quite different. In fact, he wants to HELP Maggie an in doing so will also help her father.
Owen and Rachel do have a chance at a happily ever after IF they can get all their ducks in a row…well…get them BACK in a row and if both are willing to listen to their hearts.
This is a book I believe will appeal to New Adult readers and those that like a fairly predictable plot without any major dramas to contend with. Thank you to NetGalley and Barclay Publicity for the ARC – This is my honest review.
For the most part, I liked the book. I just didn't love it as much as I wanted to since it is a friends to lovers story.
I did like the romance between the couple. I thought it was fun and flirty. They were good together. I also loved Maggie's friends. They are set up to have their own romances in this book and I want to read them. What I didn't love about this book was that it was quite repetitive. I got tired of constantly being reminded of the feud between the two fathers. I found myself skimming over parts because I felt like that ground had already been covered multiple times. Maggie's situation with her father was a bit annoying as well. She should have stood up to him a lot sooner than she did. In the real world, I wonder how long the shareholders would have allowed his poor business sense to keep going.
As I said, for the most part, it's a fun romance. I do look forward to reading the next in the series.
Maggie and Owen used to be childhood friends, Until the day they were forced apart by their families feud. Now many years later Maggie and Owen happen to bump into each other at a wedding. Maggie and Owen know hanging out is going against their families wishes but the chemistry between them is to strong to deny.
One Summer Night is a modern day romeo and Juliet tale. I did like this novel, however, I found it overly predictable. I was intrigued by the ending. Even though I knew what was coming by the middle of the novel and what the cause for the two families feud had been, I was still flying through the pages. The story is well told but the shock value wasn't high for me, which is a big plus, especially when you have a novel that has a small mysterious aspect to it.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, and heartbreak.
This is Maggie and Owen’s story. Maggie and Owen’s families have been neighbors and enemies for years. She has been trying everything to save her families business even mortgaging their house. But it’s still not helping. Owen wants to help but will Maggie give him a chance? With the family they have do they even have a chance at getting involved. He is out to prove that he is not trouble and willing to help. She wonders if they can get along long enough for him to help or is he just out to bring her entire family down? Owen needs to get her to allow him to help so he can finally get a chance to get her to fall for him. He fell for her already and he needs to get her to see him for himself and not just her enemy and neighbor.
I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
This is the first book in this new series. I liked this book. It is a good start to this series. Maggie and Owen are kind of like the modern day Juliet and Romero. Only, not as dramatic and there is no death, only a happy ending.
What I liked the most about both Maggie and Owen are that they were both strong, independent individuals but at the same time they were not afraid to admit that they needed one another; despite what their families may think. Although, I felt like Owen's father had the bigger problem. However, what I did miss some in this book and what I thought would have helped it more is passion. There is nothing wrong with more passion. Yet, this book definitely has Caridad Pineiro's style...sweet, romantic, and a charming storyline.
I had a hard time connecting to these characters; something about the tone of the writing and the super rich characters didn't work for me here, which is too bad as I have the second one loaded on my Kindle.
Lovely romance set at the Jersey shore—therefore perfect to read on the beach! Family feud, demanding fathers, billionaires, forbidden love, long-time crushes, and a great cast of side characters I’m looking forward to reading more about.
(One Summer Night is Book 1 in the At the Shore series)
This was an interesting book. There are some steamy scenes between Owen And Mags. There is some business scheming. I liked Owen and Maggie as a couple. I didn't think Owen would do what he does.
At the Shore #1 Contemporary Second Chance Love Sassy and Sweet Childhood friends torn apart by family feud who reconnect as adults Looking forward to reading the rest of the series
RaeAnne Thayne: "One Summer Night is the perfect escape! It's tender, funny and sexy, with wonderful characters you'll fall in love with. You can't go wrong with Caridad Pineiro."
One Summer Night has been named a Publishers Weekly Top 10 Romance! bit.ly/2tYoHRw
Publishers Weekly: In a passionate modern Romeo and Juliet-inspired story (with a much happier ending) that opens a contemporary romance series, Pineiro (Under the Boardwalk) develops the forbidden love between sensitive, spunky retail heiress Maggie Sinclair and stoic real estate scion Owen Pierce. . . . A cast of lovely, imperfect supporting characters--including Owen's entrepreneurial younger brother, Jonathan; Maggie's friend Emma, a wedding planner avoiding love; and her friend Connie, a workaholic lawyer gunning for partner--neatly surrounds this endearing hero and heroine as Owen's father attempts to derail their love story forever. Readers will want to visit the charming town of Sea Kiss again and again. (Oct.)
Kirkus: "A sexy, fun, yet touching summer read."
Amy Alessio at Booklist: "Modern marriage of convenience stories are tricky, but Pineiro delivers rich emotions, strong lead characters, and interesting business insights."
Book Riot: "One Summer Night, like Chesapeake Shores, is the perfect mix of urban vs. seaside and work vs. play. Pineiro perfectly sets up the romance between family friends Maggie and Owen in One Summer Night, but the book also introduces readers to their long-standing family feud. . . "
Books for Books Blogspot: "One Summer Night was a well written romance novel that was more than just a typical love at first sight. . . I found the interaction between the characters and the dialogue to be particularly well written. . . I greatly enjoyed this romance novel and it is the perfect book for reading at the beach!"
RT Book Reviews - 4 Stars: "Book one of the At the Shore series is delightful and will be embraced by beach-lovers far and wide. Pineiro's description of Sea Kiss, NJ, sounds like a place you will never want to leave. But paradise can also be daunting as the author reminds us, especially when it's inhabited by two feuding familess. Readers will appreciate how cautious Maggie and Owen approach their romance. This is a fantastic start to the series!"
There is a lot happening in this one. Maggie partially owns her family business with her dad (and other shareholders of course). The retail division is losing money, due in part, to her dad being rigid and not wanting to change anything. Maggie has mortgaged 2 of the family's properties to keep them afloat and she will lose her home (and vacation home at Sea Kiss) if she can't turn things around. Owen is part owner of his family's real estate empire. His father disinherited his brother Jonathon when he wouldn't do what he wanted. His father hates the Sinclairs and wants their retail properties. Owen walks a fine line trying to have both what he wants and his father's approval. I enjoyed this one, in part, because of the family history. Maggie grew up next door to Owen and his brother in Sea Kiss. Things happen and they run into each other periodically as they grew up, attend college, and then in the city. I liked this for the slow burn romance at first, then it became so much more quickly. Maggie does grow a spine and talks to her dad about his refusal to make changes. I assume Maggie's friends, Connie and Emma get their HEAs in future books. (I'm hoping Connie's is first; I think some of her story was happening concurrently with Maggie's. I also suspect she is

Tracy was in love with being in love and that worried one of her best friend and maid of honor Maggie as tracy and her new husband were dancing. Connie and emma were Tracy’s other best friend as well as Maggie’s. Maggie, Connie, and emma were the last three single females in their circle of college friends and business acquaintances. Maggie hadn’t thought about marriage in a long time as she had too much going on in her life . For years now Maggie had been dealing with her family’s business and it’s money problems. Maggie had mortgaged the property she had inherited to funnel money into the family’s struggling retail stores. Maggie spent way too much time at work which left little time for romance. Maggie was told by connie Owen had been watching her all night but maggie said Owen had no interest in her. Owen and Maggie’s fathers had been friends until Owen’s father felt Maggie’s family had done him wrong. Now there was a feud between the two families. But owen and maggie didn’t feel that way. A while ago Owen and Maggie had shared a drunken kiss and since then fate has seemed to throw them together a lot both personally and in business. Maggie didn’t feel so alone when owen was around. But Maggie couldn’t get used to that. Owen had left maggie once when she had needed him most right after her mom's death. Owen’s in and out of Maggie’s life proved she couldn’t count on him. Owen’s younger brother Jonathan was also at the wedding and seen Owen watching Maggie and said to Owen Maggie was just trouble and their father had declared the Sinclairs were off limits a long time ago and would have a stroke if he knew Owen and Maggie were together. Owen felt in a way he had been involved with Maggie forever. Owen had become intrigued with the woman Maggie had grown into as they had know each other since they were young. Owen and Maggie started spending time together which was risky and complicated. Maggie has to make her father understand they have to update the stores even though her father greatly fears changing the store his cherished wife had built. Owen wants to help Maggie with her problems but she doesn’t know if it’s just a ploy to bring her whole family down as Maggie had learned not to trust Owen being there for her. I enjoyed reading this book. The story was a fun light read. This was well written and I liked the plot and pace of the book. I really enjoyed the build up of Owen’s and Maggie’s relationship. I didn’t like when Maggie didn’t believe Owen and that he really cared for her but understood why she felt that way. I loved how Owen respected and supported maggie knowing what it may cost him. I loved Maggie, Connie, Emma, and Tracy’s relationships and how they were there for each other. This was a little predictable but I still really enjoyed and liked this book. It was a modern day romeo and Juliet along with one struggling and one person rich. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book and I recommend.
A nice start to a new series that was easy to read and had some really great characters. Mixing the whole forbidden aspect and a somewhat marriage of convenience to this sort-of/kind-of second-chance romance gave this love story some additional twists and depth.
Owen and Maggie have been meant for each other for forever…there’s just been too many things in their way, namely the feud that erupted between their families. A feud that neither of them quite know the details of, but one that has had them keeping their distance from one another even though the pull of attraction has been there since they were kids.
Maggie was wonderful. After losing her mother, I loved that she stepped up to become so involved in the family business. I could feel her pain at not being able to convince her dad to make changes to keep the business moving forward – and her pain at knowing that financially things were not good and might not ever turn around.
Owen has also become part of his family’s business, doing everything he can to keep the approval of his sometimes-volatile father – and he knows the price he will pay if he fails since his father has already disowned his brother Jonathan for not living up to his expectations. I totally understood his need to stay away from Maggie and loved when he decided that he couldn’t stay away any longer and needed to help her. I also understood his need to keep the truth from his father, but I do wish he would have confided in her his plan once everything was set in place and things were more than real between them.
I absolutely loved the cast of characters in this book and relationships with one another that they share. The girls being BFFFs and calling each other out on their BS was great, and I loved getting to see the strength in Owen and his brother Jonathan’s relationship, despite having their father disown Jonathan. This cast of characters added so much to this book and has certainly laid the groundwork for future books in the series.
This was an easy read with a fairly straight forward plot, but there were some twists and reveals in this book that kept things moving. And I absolutely loved the way this ended – I don’t think I would have enjoyed the book as much if things didn’t end as they did!
This is the perfect book for your beach bag or to curl up with when you need a happy ever after with a little bit of angst and a whole lot of great characters!
One Summer Night is the first book in the new At the Shore series by Caridad Piñeiro. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review from Barclay Publishing via Netgalley. Maggie and Owen were childhood friends. They played together as children when their respective families visited the shore where they were next door neighbors for many Summers until some falling out happened between their fathers. Their fathers had been best friends when something broke the friendship. Neither Owen or Maggie is quite sure of the whole story, but, they do know that it involves several high-valued properties that the two friends planned to invest in together until Maggie's dad did something different. Whatever happened each man has passed the feud on through their children.
Skip to Maggie and Owen as adults, both working in their family's business. Owen's family's business is excelling and Maggie's family's business is in trouble. Her father will not change with the times and continues to make the same choices that are no longer viable in a .com era where people do not have to visit a storefront to purchase anything any longer. He has not grasped the change very well and is steadfast in his denial of any changes that Maggie wants to make. Maggie has decided to try and show him what the retail business they own with a flagship store on 5th avenue in New York, could be now with a blend of the traditional and the modern. She needs an infusion of cash to get it off the ground. Owen has the cash and his father still wants those properties and he doesn't care who he has to hurt to get them. Owen and Maggie's friendship could be much more if their fathers' feud was not in the way. One Summer Night is the story of two adult children trying to branch out on their own while keeping one foot firmly rooted to their respective families. The question is can they stand out on their own enough to give their relationship a chance or will they let the feud interfere. It is a great, romantic start to a new series. I look forward to seeing where the story goes next and I have a feeling I just might know. Review can also be seen at LadyTechie's Book Musings ladytechiesbookmusings.blogspot.com.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinions presented herein are my own except as noted.
Caridad writes some naive, sweet romance oozing with sincerity. You can tell she is a writer who feels for both her characters and her readers. SHe also cares powerfully about the Jersey Shore where she lives.
I almost titled this post “Revenge is a Dish Best Left Unserved.” Or ” how “How Parents Fuck Up.” In part this story is about parents screwing up and holding serious grudges. One is shrewd, mean and successful in business, the other is kind but not faring so well in the business department. They’re both stuck in the past and being jerks, or in the case of Owen’s father a truly bad actor.
The book is also about love and attraction, and trying to deny both. But, after being raised to be distrustful of each other Maggie can’t turn that off completely. But Owen is afraid of losing his dad and made a deal with him that he had no intention of completing. They both fail to communicate and (you may know this) that is my least favorite trope. The couple has real issues to manage and the choice to make it about not communicating, instead of working on the issues takes away from them learning to deal with issues together. Even knowing their individual secrets will not make the issues disappear. So there could have been ample conflict without it.
I think Caridad writes steamy scenes nicely, with passion and without vulgarity. They do get hot, but Caridad also makes it a sweet love story.
This is the first book narrated by Veronica Worthington that I’ve read. Her voice is pleasant and non-nasal, she doesn’t overly exaggerate her cadence. She did a great job.
One Summer Night has that enemies to lovers feel to it, especially since Owen and Maggie’s families have been in that enemies category for some time now. Yet Owen hasn’t let their fathers’ feud keep his feelings for Maggie from growing, even if he hasn’t acted on them for years. At one time, in their younger years, they’d felt the spark of a crush, might have been more if not for their fathers and their feud that has nothing to do with the next generation. Still Maggie and Owen went their separate ways, until times changed and Maggie is faced with hard choices..
Now he has a chance to bridge that feud by helping Maggie, and maybe if he’s lucky, getting her to fall for him again as well. It’s been said to ‘keep your friends close and your enemies closer’ – well Owen intends to get very close with Maggie.
I enjoyed One Summer Night. There is a large cast of characters to make your way through. I expect that in the first story of a series knowing that many of those characters will one day have their own tales to tell. It doesn’t take long to find who goes together, or might in the future… but this is a series of close knit friends and family, so it’s expected to have people overflowing at times.
My interest is definitely engaged now, and I’m looking forward to the next story in the At The Shore series. I’d recommend this story for any Romance reader who enjoys tension, lots of characters to liven up the story and a good old-fashioned family feud love story.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Maggie Sinclair has worked her fingers to the bone trying to save her family business, which includes mortgaging their beach house on the Jersey Shore. And even with working around the clock, she's out of options. Owen Pierce has had a thing for Maggie for a long time, but never tried to do anything about it, as the Sinclair and Pierce families have been enemies for many years. Now all he wants to do is invest in her success, not to mention claim her as his. When they come up with an idea to do just that, will the family feud block them? I want to start out with why I didn't give this great story 5 stars, and trust me I hate giving anything negative in a review, especially since I couldn't write a book to save my life. And please remember this is only MY OPINION, which means that it's not fact, just how I viewed it. With that being said, it took me a bit to get invested in the story, as I was confused for a length of time with all the cast of characters being front & center. After I found myself on solid ground, I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough, and devoured the rest of it. Now that I got that out of the way, I can go on to say that I found Caridad Pineiro's writing style extremely talented, because even when I was struggling, she was able to get me fully invested before the end. And the colorful cast of secondaries were highly entertaining in their own right. I can honestly say that I'm excited to continue on this new series, and hopefully Connie, the fireball is next up. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Maggie and Owen each had likable and unlikable qualities, but I really enjoyed their story and couldn’t help but cheer them on. Both were workaholics that grew up without their mothers, raised by stubborn fathers more interested in carrying on an old feud than anything else. Somehow, despite their father, both Owen and his brother Jonathan both turned out successful, intelligent, and adorable. Maggie was hard-working and had a very close-knit group of girlfriends, but something about her made it difficult for me to truly feel invested in her character. Both her and Owen were hot and cold initially, denying feelings one minute then professing feelings another minute. However, I loved both characters when I felt like they were being their true selves. Although I must say, I was much more into Owen and his feelings throughout the entire novel – he was just so yummy!
I loved the originality of the storyline with its own special twist on a Romeo & Juliet theme. The author crafted an entertaining read that also touched on the importance of honesty and forgiveness in friendships, romantic relationships, and the world of business. She also illustrated the devasting effects of long-term anger and how many lives are affected when people cannot let go of the past. Was the best book I’ve read in a while? No, it wasn’t. However, I did enjoy it quite a bit and would easily recommend this one to fans of contemporary romance.
