A Second Chance by Alexis A Goring is a delightful contemporary Christian romance which I really enjoyed. The novel has the themes of faith and trust. Being hurt in the past raises trust issues. This hurt has erected a barrier between individuals and between God. God, who should have prevented the hurt, or so it is believed. However being a Christian does not make us immune to bad things but when they happen we know we have God who walks beside us and who has promised to never leave us. God wants us to have faith and trust His plans for our lives. There is the subject of loss. Grief can be raw for months and years after losing loved ones. Time and compassion are needed to heal. Family is important. "Family comes first." There are two very warm families within the story. The reader 'feels' their love radiating out. There is the theme of healing... physical, spiritual and mental. Time can only heal so much. God can heal everything in His way, in His timing. A major theme is that of forgiveness. Past hurts can put up road blocks to forgiveness and these need to be torn down. We need to forgive before we can move forwards into the future God has planned for us. I absolutely loved A Second Chance. It was delightfully warm and welcoming. I found myself 'living' the action alongside the characters. A perfect afternoon's read. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Finding love after heartache is a risk. Traci is not sure that she is ready for a relationship after her fiancee left her at the alter. She is deeply in debt and needs financial relief. An unexpected option opens up, if she marries she gets an inheritance.
Marc is also having problems in the relationship department. Helping his widowed sister with her children doesn't help in finding someone to love.
This is a sweet Christian romance. Both Marc and Traci want to find a person to share their lives with, but both of them have problems trusting their hearts to another. I enjoyed the message of faith and trusting God.
The book is a novela and moves at a very quick pace. There wasn't a lot of time for character development. The book focuses more on relationship issues and overcoming them. It is a sweet and clean read. Perfect for the times you need something quick to read.

A SECOND CHANCE had such promise and I could see what the author was trying to do or where she wanted to go, but this one didn't work for me. My issues were with the verbiage and the way the story felt forced. There were so many phrases and thoughts from the characters that just felt off or unnatural. The overall plot wasn't bad and the characters were likable, so those weren't really the issues. I think there just needed to be a lot more editing and someone going over verbiage, asking if someone would really use these words or think these thoughts.
To give you an example, Marc is with his niece and nephew at a department store and Traci happens to run into him. Here's the conversation:
Marc turned around. "We've got to stop doing this."
She couldn't keep the smile from her voice. "We must keep running into each other for a reason. Why are you here today?"
"We're looking for a gift for Gina."
"We?" Traci looked around. She only saw him.
"Yeah, I brought the kids. They're just a few steps away, looking at the watches."
As if on cue, Samantha's voice rang out. "Uncle Marky. We found the best watch for Mommy."
"She sure is enthusiastic." Then again, with him for an uncle, who wouldn't be?
"It's not a problem, is it?" Darkness swept through his eyes.
"Just the opposite."
He brightened. "Come on, then." He grasped her by the hand.
The first part of the conversation is just fine. I was confused why either Marc having the kids with him or Samantha's enthusiasm (I'm not sure which Marc is referring to) would be a problem to Traci. Then the whole "Darkenss swept through his eyes." part... Maybe "he looked concerned" or "his eyes darkened" or something else would have been better. Normally something like this wouldn't be that big of a deal, but there was a lot of this kind of thing where scenes or thoughts and dialogue just didn't make sense to me, and at this point in the story I'd already come across so many that I'd lost count so it started to really bug me. I'd be going along reading and then a phrase or the character's thoughts would come out of no where or just not make sense. This happened consistently.
Then other areas were over-dramatized or unrealistic. An example would be Traci almost having an emotional break-down about not telling Marc something after one date. Then there are both her and Marc's friends immediately jumping to the two of them getting married right away. I could see that after they'd gone out a few times or talking about the other possibly being "the one," but not so early on. It's like there was a lot of in-between development missing before jumping to the next plot point. I like my stories to make sense or for the characters to come across as authentic and this story didn't feel that way to me.
A SECOND CHANCE is, I believe, Ms. Goring's debut novella. I enjoyed reading it but it seemed a bit contrived. She has to marry to get inheritance, so hero and heroine meet, fall madly in love (based on looks) and it is destiny.Traci is a self-proclaimed God-avoider and she does go to church one time, but faith is really not an issue and even though he knows and he's a "good Christian man" (said by someone who didn't know him) he didn't care.
The black moment you could see coming from a mile away and I seriously don't even see what the big deal is because she didn't lie unless you consider it because she didn't blab it out the moment they met, but it was not something that should be broadcasted around anyway.
The story is clean. It didn't grab me, but it was sort-of well-written but in a style that held the reader distant.
Traci Hightower is still paying the bills for her wedding - a wedding that never happened. When she meets Marc Roberts, she's deeply attracted to him. When Marc spots Traci in a restaurant, he's smitten with her good looks. He hesitates about asking her out - after all, he leads a busy life, helping to take care of his widowed sister's children takes a lot of his time and energy. He's not sure if he's ready and able to give love another chance. But Traci has a secret and she's afraid to tell Marc. How will he react? Marc has been burned by women in the past. How can he move past his negative experiences and learn to give Traci a chance? A Second Chance is a light, sweet entertaining novella. If you like clean and wholesome stories, then you should give this one a try.
A Second Chance is a sweet inspirational romance and an interesting story. The authors style of writing is easily read. I really liked the main characters, Traci & Marc. The only issue I had with the beginning of the book is that I felt that their romantic connection didn't quite seem real to me. It wasn't until further into the story and their reactions to the circumstances they were in seemed more in character.
A second chance was heartbreaking in some parts and uplifting in others. I enjoyed the journey and was interested to see where Traci & Marc's relationship would take them. There were issues with past relationships that came back to haunt both of them. I loved the Christian references within the story line, and how each character overcame their issues with God's help.
I liked the ending which didn't have any cliffhangers. The story ending was uplifting and positive which I like to see in a Christian romance. The story reminded me that all of us are flawed in some way, but with God's help we can learn to overcome it. When God intervenes, anything is possible.
Love this story!! Life can be full of twists and turns that we never see coming, but that's what makes it so exciting. A plot twist that looks devastating can quickly turn into a long awaited answered prayer. We just have to be patient and trust that God has a plan and purpose in everything.
A Second Chance tells a sweet romance between two characters who know well the challenges and hurts a romantic relationship can involve. The two navigate their budding love with hesitation, hope, and a reliance on God, and I enjoyed their story.
Yet, as I read, I couldn’t help wishing A Second Chance offered a little bit more. As a novella, so much of the relationship development happens off the page, and I missed seeing the process of falling in love. Feelings and comments often seemed sudden, disjointed, or out of the blue because I didn’t get to see much of the interactions that caused them. With more detail and development, the story’s progression would feel smoother and become much more engaging.
Still, A Second Chance is lovely and heartfelt, and while I wanted more, romance readers could very well enjoy this quick and clean read.
Thanks to Singing Librarian Book Tours, I received a complimentary copy of A Second Chance and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
A Second Chance by Alexis Goring, the first work I’ve read by this author, presents an interesting premise and is a quick read.
Traci, the main character, is given a letter from her mother detailing the requirements for Traci to get her inheritance from him: she must be married and her mother must approve of Traci’s spouse. I’ve read this “must get married to get inheritance” in historical novels, but never in a contemporary. And though Traci worries about what to do as she is currently drowning in bills from her called off wedding, she seems to accept this condition without any problem. She’s likable.
Marc, the other main character, does not trust women because his exes keep lying to him. Marc was likable enough, though he falls into the “overprotective and I will hurt anyone who hurts you because you’re mine” trope when he meets Traci’s ex-fiancé and I HATE that in my romance characters.
The big misunderstanding” is based on Marc finding the letter about the inheritance by looking inside an envelope on the table—which Traci left out because she planned to tell him about the conditions to her inheritance—and assuming she’s dating him to get married to gain the money. He’s also mad because she lied to him about it, which is the only part of the conversation that I can stand. Marc never apologizes for the invasion of privacy and Traci acts as if the entire mess of the disintegrating relationship is her fault. I was so livid about the invasion of privacy and the non-apology that I almost put the book down.
The characters are also seriously old-fashioned, with Traci’s passiveness and Marc’s overprotective jealousy disguised as caring for her. Traci spends most of the book waiting for Marc to make the first move, even though he takes weeks to contact her after their first meeting and doesn’t contact her quickly after their dates, either. There was also a case of “insta-love” as these characters are convinced they are in love with each other after one date and so are both of their friends. I did appreciate that both Traci and Marc have friends and families outside of the relationship, which does not always happen in romance novels.
These characters needed to seriously talk with each other. At one point, they try a long-distance romance and I couldn't believe it. If they couldn’t even make it work in person, how would long-distance work? It’s much harder and requires much more communication, which neither of these characters do well.
There is a lot of telling rather than showing, and much of the romance seems to happen off-screen. Part of the quickness of the romance is due to the length of the book, and I was expecting the romance would feel rushed. However, it also feels incomplete. We’re told the characters love each other, but with both stubbornly refusing to discuss problems and not trusting the other, it was hard to see it.
I give A Second Chance 2/5 stars. The characters are overdramatic and uncommunicative, the plot feels contrived, and the entire romance feels rushed and incomplete and as a result I cannot recommend this book.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through CelebrateLit. All opinions are my own.**
A Second Chance by Alexis Goring is a light, sweet romance novella with a cast of great characters. I particularly liked Carla, Traci’s friend and coworker. She added a bit of sass to the mix which made her role as advice-giver much less saccharine and more dimensional than it could have been.
The plot is unique – an inheritance with strings attached: Traci has to get married to someone her mother approves of in order to receive it. And she doesn’t want it just to pay bills (though those are a struggle for her). She wants the inheritance to open a bookstore, something she promised her late cousin she would do in her honor. What I found interesting was that Traci basically gave up on this hope when she got the letter explaining the conditions to the inheritance. She didn’t immediately start chasing a husband; in fact, it seemed to give her less hope than she had before. This adds a different spin to the trope and kept me invested to see how it would play out.
The characters are all sweet and fairly well defined as individuals. The problem, however, lies in their interactions with each other. Dialogue is often stilted/unnatural, interrupting the otherwise smooth flow of the story. There’s also not a lot of emotional depth or background. The characters react to things, certainly, but more often than not their reactions remain surface level at best or come out of left field. As a result, the reader doesn’t experience the emotions along with the characters and many times is left feeling as though some key information is missing.
Another thing that bothered me is the “insta-love”. Normally, I’m all for insta-love – or at least insta-“intense attraction” because it leaves more time for kissing 😉 But in this case the time span from first encounter to knowing he/she is “the one” was less than half a millisecond. Like, seriously “picking out the wedding china before they know each other’s names” fast. This fits with the lack of dimension/depth that I mentioned above, but if you can get past that the romance is sweet and will make you smile.
Bottom Line: A Second Chance by Alexis A. Goring makes for a quick, easy read, though it could use a bit tighter and more dimensional development. Novellas are tricky things though, and I think perhaps if the author had the space of a full-length novel several of the issues might have resolved themselves. Nevertheless, readers will enjoy meeting Traci and Marc and their friends and families!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
What will food critic Traci do when she receives an inheritance from her grandfather … with a string attached: She must marry, with her mother’s approval, before she will receive a penny. At least there’s no time limit imposed on her love life.
And then she loses her job.
Is her attraction to political journalist Marc desperation, or is it real? With her history, how can Traci tell?
And given those who have lied to him in the past, and his current responsibilities, will Marc open his heart up to her?
Alexis Goring’s novella, A Second Chance, starts off with an intriguing premise. How will Traci and Marc sort through all the issues as they build a relationship? This is exactly the kind of romance I enjoy (I’m normally a suspense gal, of course).
Their faith issues play an important role in their relationship, as well. And you know what, in real life, this is how it is for Christians, working out their relationship with God as they navigate the challenges of life. This is what made Goring’s novel such a good read. The faith aspect was real, not contrived, not ignored, not glossed-over. Again, this is the way it is for real Christians in a real world. We get to sit back and watch Traci and Marc unravel the knots of their lives to see if their lives can be knotted together in a good way.
The writing itself is another excellent aspect of A Second Chance. Goring is a smooth writer, skillfully weaving the subplots (Marc’s sister and her kids, and Traci’s financial situation) into the main love story plot, and hitting all the awww moments romance readers crave. Skillfully, I have to add — those awww moments are neither forced, nor are they so sweet they give you a tummy ache.
What did I not like about A Second Chance? I felt the relationship between Traci and her mother, while not ignored, was given short shrift, especially given her grandfather’s mandate that her mother approve her marriage. She does approve, of course, but this could’ve been a source of tension, though Traci and her mom get along well, that would have enriched the story. Of course, it would’ve lengthened it, too, and the novella is just about perfect, length-wise. A tough balance for any writer.
Goring’s intriguing premise, and her adroit weaving of the subplots, and the adept heart-touching awww moments make the reader’s day.
As Alexis is a new author to me, I was looking forward to getting a look at one of her creations. "A Second Chance" is a sweet romantic story. It is an easy to read story, slow paced but overall, enjoyable . The overall theme of the book was how God provides us with a second chance, even when we feel at our lowest and aren't satisfied with what has taken place in the past. God has the one ability that no one else has.... He can turn something that we believe is a horrible situation into something rewarding and valuable. Traci , the main character dealt with this, making her easy with whom to identify. We all need to put our trust in God, not just in good times. Marc sounds like a great guy, one who I would like to know. What woman doesn' t love a kind, handsome guy who is trustworthy and thoughtful?? The plot moves slowly causing me to be a bit impatient to find out what this book was all about, however, I did enjoy the romantic tale. I would have preferred a bit more action and some additional twists and turns. As I say this, it is also a novel worth reading, reminding us of our need to let go of past mistakes and trust God enough to know that He can and WILL make a happier future for us, if we allow Him free rein with our lives.
This book was received as a gift. The thoughts and opinions expressed are honest and my own.
This is a sweet story about being rejected and forgiveness, and as the title suggest a second chance at love.
I just thought the romance was a little two fast for me but that is to be expected when the book is only 155 pages.
This book theme is Jeremiah 29:11. I though the story covered that verse really well and showed that if you trust God and put anything in His care things work out, maybe not how you thought things would turn out or what you thought you wanted.
My favorite character would have to, well, to be honest I have to say they all are. Why, you ask because Samantha and Regan are the children in this story. Grandpa because he is the one who helped a long time dream come true. Marc just because he is the reason Illinois was mentioned in the story which is the state I live in. And Gina is because she is a writer, one of my favorite type of people after children.
If you want a story that you can read in just an hour or two and that leaves you in a relaxing and peaceful frame of mind then I recommend "A Second Chance" by Alexis A. Goring.
I am giving this book three stars.
I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
Can I begin by saying, I would love Traci Hightower’s job—to get paid to try new restaurants and order whatever you wanted? In that regard, I was surprised at the restraint she showed in not ordering the entire menu. Of course, Traci was much more of a professional than I would be, in her position. But it was fun living vicariously through her. As one who loves words even more than food, I found both her and the hero’s careers fun and enjoyable. Because both worked in with the media, they could understand the demands involved, and that worked well with the romance angle.
This may have been the first novella I’ve read, so it is a little more difficult for me to write an educated review. I suspect there are a lot of differences between a novella and a full-length romance, the greatest of which being word count, obviously. I’d read other reviewers thought there was a bit too much telling in this book, but I suspect that has to do with overall page length. I’ve noticed the shorter the story, the more telling one will encounter. The trick is to make sure the most important and intriguing (most romantic!) aspects are shown rather than told.
I must also say, I loved the cover—very cute and tasteful. I’ve never been a fan of sensual covers, or stories with sensuality, for that matter. Alexis did well on both counts. This is a clean, lighthearted romance one can take to the beach or perhaps enjoy while sipping iced tea on their back porch.
I was given a free e-copy for review purposes; my opinions are my own.
Another sweet romance. A little bit too short for my personal preferences, but it was very sweet. Traci is left an immense inheritance by her grandfather. With one stipulation. She can't touch it unless she marries. And she must get married to someone her mother approves of. She has no intentions of marrying for less than love. But she already has ideas of what she could do with a large sum of money... Then she meets Marc. Afraid of being rejected (she'd been left at the altar by her previous fiance), she doesn't want to tell him about her inheritance. Sounds like a good storyline for a Hallmark movie, right?! :) If you are looking for something easy, with just the right amount of romance, be sure and give this one a try! As the title hints, “A Second Chance” is a story about second chances at love. This contemporary Christian novella is also about learning to trust, especially when one has been wounded by past relationships.
Overall, the story is a good one with fairly strong characters. Both Traci and Marc are likeable and most readers will root for them to get together. At times the plot seems to be a bit rushed but that could be due to trying to fit too many details into a shorter length book. There was also a time or two that I thought things were too dramatic and blown out of proportion for the actual circumstances but hey, that’s just my own personal preferences coming into play.
“A Second Chance” is a fairly quick read and mostly entertaining. Those who enjoy contemporary romance novellas will probably enjoy it.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital copy of this book that was provided by Celebrate Lit. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
A light, modern Christian romance with themes of broken-and-yet-to-heal hearts, struggling-with-trust issues, faith rekindled while patience honesty and prayer triumph.
Despite some of the descriptions being a little stilted and overused
“Her beautiful, hazel-green eyes arrested him. His heart flopped like a bunny.” “Just as she started to change her mind and walk out of the bistro, he entered. And smiled. Her heart fluttered.”
and the instantly in love a tad unrealistic
“He thought of her. Traci. His dream girl. From the restaurant.”
This is still a sweet romance story with several characters and storylines which keep the entirety moving along to a satisfying conclusion.
A Second Chance is ideal for a day-at-the-beach or by-the-pool read, a solid four stars – I liked it!

This is a pretty quick and short read with a cute storyline. It reminds me of a "talk" my dad gave me before he died about second chances and prince charming. For such a short read, the characters are well developed. As with any shorter story, there are times it could have been more developed-but that's to be expected in a shorter book. The supporting characters are a hoot, and really add depth and meaning to the overall story. Traci and Marc are made for each other, and that's pretty evident in the reading, even if they haven't figured that out yet. They are believable to a point, but at times I found them to be overly....I don't even know the word I'm looking for. Sweet maybe? Nice? Cute? That's not a bad thing, since it adds to the sweetness of the story.

A Second Chance is a sweet story that will have you believing in the power of love and the gift of second chances. Nobody is perfect and sometimes it's hard to overlook someone's past but as Alexis Goring shows us, sometimes it's worth the risk. Mr. or Mrs. Right may be right around the corner but you will never know if you're focusing on the negative or past mistakes.
The story is well written and captures the reader's attention from the start. Even though the characters are flawed they are still people you will root for. I really enjoyed A Second Chance and I believe you will too. I can't wait to read what Mrs.Goring writes next.
*I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own.
A Second Chance by Alexis A. Goring is a really good story. It's about Traci and Marc, both journalists. Both have been hurt in the past. Traci was jilted on her wedding day by ex fiancé. With Marc all the girls he dated ended up want to be just friends. They do have issues to work through. Traci has a secret. Marc has trust issues. Can their faith and God work things out? Read and enjoy this book to find out. Blessings.
This was a sweet read. It is a short easy story to read. I personally found the story a little slow to get going . Since it is a short read some things you find kinda left loose and lacking a bit. The main characters are Traci and Mark and they are nice . The story involves second chances at love and learning to trust. If the author continues this story with a full book I would choose to read it. I received this book for free. No compensation was received and all opinions are my own
This is a fluffy and sweet novella. Both Traci and Marc are extremely likable (maybe a little too likeable) characters who are a tad fearful of communicated everything to the other person. The supporting characters (Traci’s best friend, Marc’s co-workers, sister, niece, and nephew) add a fun layer to the story. In fact, I would love to learn more of Gina’s story.
There were times Marc and Traci’s story felt rushed. A few places, I wanted more leading up to where they were and asked myself “what about…” Novellas are tricky. There has to be enough story to keep readers interested while moving the story along to get to an end. Those details I mentioned that were missing could be fixed with a longer word count.
Overall, if you’re looking for something sweet and short, this one meets the requirements. There is a deeper theme of letting go of the past and trusting others that runs throughout the novella as well.

This was such a sweet story. I think we've all been in situations that leave us down and questioning life, and sometimes (if we're honest) even God. Traci had to learn that even in hard times, God knows what is best for us. He can turn something bad into something good. Although we all haven't lived the same experience that Traci did, we can certainly relate with her on the overall theme here. This was a wonderful reminder of our need to trust God to take care of us.
I enjoyed seeing Marc and Traci together. Although I would have preferred a little more about their first few dates, I understand the need to speed a storyline along when you have limited time to get in all the details. Marc sounds like such a great guy. I think those readers who look for book boyfriends will be swooning. I mean, what's not to love? He seems trustworthy, great with kids, thoughtful, and I think a little cute, at least that is how I pictured him!
I hope you will give this story a chance. It's a wonderful story of letting go of the past, hope, trusting God, and second chances. It just may be the story that you need to hear!

Second chances... we often want one when things don't turn out as we expected. When we get one, we work hard to change the outcome.
We often get second chances at work, with friends, in our relationships, and in love.
Are there things where there is a second chance within a second chance? You know, those times when you are given a second chance at love: finding a new person that could be the one after all the all the ones that weren't. But then something happens in your "this could be the one relationship" and you need a do over or a start over or just move forward due to a second chance.
Traci Hightower and Marc Roberts have had a great deal of bad luck when it comes to personal relationships. She got dumped at the altar recently and he has seemed to find all the women who soon decide they would rather be friends.
An odd but very brief meeting at a restaurant leads to the eventual start of a relationship between the two with honesty at its core. One problem, Tracy has an inheritance issue that could come across in two ways to Marc, so instead of addressing it she just lets it be. Trouble is with honesty and a "secret," things always tend to fall apart. And often picking them back up is either too hard or not worth it, and of course miscommunication and misunderstanding often gets in the way and festers.
Yea, so Traci and Marc hit that last bump. Talking It out... well that doesn't really happen.
So here was each ones second chance at love, now no chance at love. Or can they both find ways to move forward and give the other a second chance?
Alexis Goring has written a fun, flirty, and sweet novel about second chances in life and what one does with those opportunities. She has written an enjoyable story with interesting characters the reader can relate to.
A Second Chance by Alexis A. Goring is a sweet contemporary romance story. This novel is a fun, easy, and fairly quick read that readers will appreciate. It discusses old and new romantic relationships, trust issues, and eventually falling in love with the right person. Goring’s story comes to life between the pages and readers will enjoy this pleasant read. I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy contemporary romance.

This book had a nice story with Traci and Marc each getting a second chance at love. It didn't flow as easily for me as some books and seemed a bit stilted. I kept wondering why Marc would run off from knowing Traci was going to get an inheritance when she got married. The extra story line of Marc's sister and her being a widow seemed unresolved and not completely necessary. I liked how they turned to God to see what His will was for their lives.
