The Count of Monte Cristo -the manga adaptation! Ha! The artwork is amazing!!!
But for a long-suffering man who is supposedly at his early 40, the Count looks a bit too young and handsome, but I'm not complaining. XD
The author only has one volume to write the entire story of The Count of Monte Cristo, and I say he(?) did a fine enough job at shortening and distilling everything, including all the main events in the story, without messing things up.
PS: but too bad the Count's henchmen have little to no screen time at all! I like those henchmen too!!

In questo mondo non vi è nè felicità, nè infelicità.
Solo chi ha provato l'estrema sventura... è in grado di gustare la suprema felicità.
Per sapere quanto sia bello vivere... bisogna aver desiderato una volta la morte.
E' un volume unico targato seinen abbastanza corposo - 280 pagine - tratto dall'omonimo classico di Dumas.
Seppur l'abbia in lista da parecchio tempo non ho ancora avuto modo di leggere l'opera originale a causa della mole, per cui non so quali e quanti personaggi e avvenimenti siano stati tagliati.
Fatta questa premessa, posso dire con certezza di aver divorato e apprezzato molto tale manga, in quanto mi ha permesso di conoscere per sommi capi le vicende del protagonista e dato la spinta per buttarmi sul mattonazzo dell'autore francese.
Vendetta, intrighi, tradimenti, giustizia, dolore, perdita, tormento, invidia, avidità, sottile confine tra bene e male... questi sono alcuni degli elementi che rendono il manga avvincente e intrigante e che portano alla riflessione su determinati temi maturi, impegnativi ma soprattutto sempre attualissimi.
Una storia che essenzialmente pone l'accento su quesiti del tipo: la vendetta è giusta? E' davvero impossibile perdonare chi ci ha fatto del male? Cosa resta poi dopo che ci si vendica? Ci si sente finalmente in pace con se stessi anche se si è perso tutto?
Io non so dare una risposta chiara perchè qui non si parla tanto di giusto e sbagliato o di buoni e cattivi ma di personaggi che perseguono degli obiettivi ben precisi senza curarsi delle conseguenze delle proprie azioni.
Pagina dopo pagina vengono messe a nudo le varie sfumature ed emozioni dell'essere umano, da quelle positive a quelle negative; è infatti un manga complesso che verte sull'aspetto psicologico dei personaggi e le situazioni che si trovano ad affrontare, riuscendo a centrare il messaggio che vuole trasmettere.
Riguardo i disegni nulla da ridire: sono semplicemente stupendi, eleganti, curati e seducenti ❤
In definitiva non posso che consigliarlo se come me si amano le storie ambientate in epoche passate che comunque risultino senza tempo.
Inoltre penso sarebbe bello se venissero pubblicati più manga tratti dai grandi classici: aiuterebbero sicuramente ad avvicinarsi ad essi e scoprire la loro bellezza *_*

Bellissima trasposizione del romanzo! Ovvio, ci sono svariate differenze con l'originale, ma lo spirito dell'opera resta intatto nonché accompagnato da meravigliosi disegni.

Was definitely a unique and pleasurable experience, as this was my first manga. I certainly feel I missed some depth of the story, but that was to be expected. The illustrations were beautifully detailed and meticulously done, depicting a character's expressions and thoughts. Overall I found reading it enjoyable and novel.

Well, that was fantastic! As someone completely unfamiliar with this classic, I found the artist great talent added much to the high action plot. I'll definitely need to read some original Dumas.

Edmond Dantes is on the brink of marriage to the person he loves and he has just been promoted to captain when he is arrested for a crime he did not commit. He is taken to prison without a trial and he is left in his cell for years without visitors or recourse. Then he meets a fellow prisoner and Dantes discovers a way to escape. When he returns to the world, he is determined to wreak revenge on those who had him unjustly imprisoned. But is that the proper direction he should go?

Beaucoup de bonnes choses dans cette adaptation qui n’arrive cependant pas à traduire le génie de Dumas, et de Dantès.
Le respect de l’histoire est présent, mais je trouve qu’elle a été beaucoup trop simplifiée et aurait méritée d’être plus étayée. Je n’ai pas réussi à retrouver tous ces moments où je me disais mon Dieu quel génie ce Dantes, certains passages étant vraiment trop raccourcis et mal expliqués.
La plume de Dumas a elle aussi vraiment disparu, et c’est dommage de ne pas retrouver plus de phrases clefs de l’auteur.
J’ai quand même adoré redécouvrir mon roman préféré de tous les temps, et voir mes personnages préférés dans toutes ces situations incroyables.

This is way less dark than I thought it would be. Based on the other adaptations I have seen I would have thought this to be way way more darker, especially the protagonist is a lot more happy than I had expected. So far this was entertaining but also kind of standard. And I did not expect a happy ending.

Having just recently finished reading the original 1000+ page source novel am on a bit of a Monte Cristo bender trying to catch up with adaptations new and old in any format. Here's a Manga version that by and large is fairly faithful with regards to the skeleton of the plot but falls in between too many chairs.... For anyone not familiar with the original it probably contains too much info in short passing that may leave certain threads incomprehensible; and for those familiar with it there is a feeling of loss that the characterisations could not go any deeper.

I took one look at the cover of Ena Moriyama’s manga adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo and was immediately entranced by the pretty art. I wondered if the interior art was as lovely, so I cleared a block of time on Saturday to read this version of Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale of betrayal and revenge. I really enjoyed this book!
When jealous rivals frame Edmond Dantes on his wedding day, he is imprisoned in Chateau d’If, an island fortress that no one has ever escaped from. Despite his innocence, he is imprisoned for years, and only the thought that his beloved Mercedes is waiting for his release keeps him going. After six years of solitary confinement, he decides to commit suicide by refusing to eat. It’s when he’s at his very weakest, emotionally and physically, that he meets Faria, another political prisoner.
As their friendship blossoms, Faria teaches Edmond all that he knows so that, should Edmond ever leave the prison, he will be prepared to take on his rivals. With Faria’s keen assistance, Edmond pieces together the puzzle of his imprisonment, and learns the identity of his betrayers. When he does, miraculously, escape his confinement, he is ready to roll. Faria left him a treasure map to make him an impossibly wealthy man, and his years of captivity have honed his need for revenge. And oh how sweet his vengeance will be.
I have never read The Count of Monte Cristo prior to picking up this manga. I’ve seen movies based on the book, but the plot details have grown hazy over the years. This was a compelling retelling, and I couldn’t put it down. With every victory against his rivals, Edmond faces unseen setbacks in his quest for revenge. After 24 years, all of his hated conspirators have families, and his actions damning his false accusers have rippling consequences for innocent people. It’s Edmond’s painful realization that the innocent should never suffer with the guilty that defines this story. At times Edmond is as heartless and evil as his enemies, and his regret at causing harm to innocents saves him from becoming a complete monster.
The art is gorgeous. Flat out beautiful and a wonderful treat, page after page. I loved the character designs, especially handsome, brooding Edmond, and exotic Haydee. Her wardrobe alone was worth the price of admission. If I have any quibbles, it’s that the story did feel too condensed at times. Otherwise, there aren’t many better ways to spend a weekend afternoon than reading through The Count of Monte Cristo.

Je lis rarement de manga, mais là j'ai été agréablement surprise.
C'est une adaptation assez fidèle du texte de Dumas, elle reprend tous les moments clés et toutes les intrigues principales (+1 pour avoir inséré la trame de Luigi Vampa et celle de Valentine, trop souvent mises de côté). Vraiment satisfaite pour une fois !
J'ai beaucoup apprécié la représentation du côté sombre de Monte-Cristo, ainsi que ses doutes intérieurs.
Bref, très belle découverte, que je recommande à tous ceux qui souhaiteraient (re)découvrir le chef-d'œuvre d'Alexandre Dumas, les nouveaux lecteurs comme les anciens. Mais cela ne dispense pas de lire la brique de mille pages !

Love this manga. It was really true to the books. I actually wish that the books were a little bit more like the manga. It only had what was truly necessary and important. It didn’t have a ton of descriptions and unnecessary plot lines. I also liked the little two pages and the end where we see little Haydée and the relationship she had without Edmond when she was younger. It was pretty cute. In general, I recommend this manga to everyone who had read the books and not someone who hasn’t read them because it can be a little hard to understand without basic knowledge of the story.

Es ist unglaublich was Moriyama in knapp unter 300 Seiten hier vollbringt.
Dieser Manga ist eine hervorragende Adaption von Dumas' literarischen Meisterwerks Der Graf von Monte Christo.
Für das, was dieser Manga ist, und die Limitierungen dieses Mediums inbegriffen, kann man einfach nichts an ihm aussetzen. Ein Muss für Freunde klassischer Literatur und japanischer Zeichenkunst.
Best girl: Tit(t)e(l)mädchen Haydée, mit all ihrem (griechisch-) orientalischen Charme,
mit der schönen katalanin Mercédès gleich an zweiter Stelle, sowohl als MILF wie auch jünger.

I found this gem in the bookstore and read it while sitting in the coffee shop. I have plans of reading the original next month. However, I have been introduced to the magical world of Manga Classics and I absolutely enjoy reading them. The Count of Mounte Cristo is one of the favorite classics from Alexander Dumas and the Manga adaptation was a joy to read. The artwork is phenominal and the storyline an exciting drama. It is not the same ending as the movie but I still enjoyed it. If you are looking for another genre to read, then Mamga is a wonderful change.

This is a wonderful adaption of my favorite book. I've read the other manga adaption and was a bit disappointed, since it left out my favorite part (the prison scenes). This includes not only that, but also made Haydee a major character. (Another disappointment I usually find in adaptions is her having a small role).
I was very pleased with this adaption and recommend it to any Monte Cristo fan!

Salah satu cerita yang keterlaluan sering diadaptasi, seolah ada mandat entah dari mana kalau tiap beberapa tahun harus ada adaptasi baru, entah dalam bentuk film, pementasan teater, drama musikal, sandiwara radio, wayang, dll. Bisa dibilang, ini bak Kembalinya Pendekar Pemanah Rajawali versi novel Barat, haha. Yah, bisa dimaklumi karena memang keseruan ceritanya tak lekang oleh zaman, dan kali ini saya juga penasaran dengan interpretasi versi manga ini.
Seperti versi-versi adaptasi lainnya, kerangka utama ceritanya sama: kisah balas dendam seorang pelaut bermasa depan cerah yang dijerumuskan ke penjara, berhasil meloloskan diri setelah bertahun-tahun, dan menyamar jadi orang elit dalam rangka balas dendam terhadap orang-orang yang sudah memfitnah dan mencelakainya. From hero to zero to avenger, kurang lebih begitu, dan manga ini tergolong setia mengikuti versi aslinya. Di satu sisi, dari awal ceritanya memang sudah oke, di sisi lain, saya juga sebenarnya ingin lihat lebih banyak variasi (kalau adaptasinya ada sebanyak ini, lebih seru kan kalau ada lebih banyak perbedaan?).
Bagian yang saya suka: metode si tokoh utamanya membalas dendam, tempo penuturan cerita, dan pembagian porsi karakternya. Bagian yang saya netral: gaya gambarnya awalnya terasa kurang cocok dengan selipan ekspresi ‘lawak’ khas karakter manga, tapi lama-lama tidak jadi masalah dan malah jadi ciri tersendiri adaptasi ini. Lalu, nuansa ending yang . Bagian yang saya kurang suka: pemasangan ).
Secara keseluruhan lumayan oke, dan yang paling penting, saya bisa merasakan kecintaan sang mangaka, Ena Moriyama, terhadap kisah asli Count of Monte Cristo yang merupakan novel favoritnya sejak kecil. Beliau juga berhasil menego adaptasi manga ini jadi sepanjang 12 bab dari yang tadinya hanya diizinkan sepanjang 8 bab, sehingga pace-nya juga jadi terasa pas. Bukan adaptasi favorit saya dari kisah ini*, tapi layak dibaca dan diresapi pesan utamanya.
Sabar menunggu, dan jangan putus harapan….
(*saya tidak banyak mencicipi berbagai adaptasi yang jumlahnya bujubuneng itu, tapi yang saya paling suka adalah versi film Prancis yang masih sangat anyar. Ada sejumlah modifikasi di situ yang saya suka, berikut dialog dan akting yang benar-benar maknyus).

I really didn't think it was possible to sum up The Count of Monte Cristo in 12 chapters and fewer than 300 pages, but Moriyama Ena did a passable job. In an author's note, she admits that she was forced to leave out quite a bit (Albert and Mercédès' story post-duel is left out, for example, and the whole Valentine and younger Morrell romance is rather shallow), but I was pleasantly surprised that the feel of the story overall was unchanged.
I can't decide if this adaptation would or wouldn't make the story accessible to struggling readers. I've read the unabridged novel a few times and I was still flipping back to the character list to double-check who had taken on which name, who had married whom, whose kids were whose, etc. I think it boils down to whether or not manga is your thing. It's not really mine, but I did love seeing certain moments drawn out on the page. It was like picking up the phone to call an old friend--I got to revisit and reminisce, even if it wasn't the real thing.
What dragged this down to three stars for me was the over-the-top sexualization of every single female character. My cousin--a really progressive and intelligent guy--once tried to weave an art-related argument for this (because it's a hallmark of the manga I've seen) and all he managed to do was make me question his progressivism and intelligence in the first place. I just don't get it. There is not so much as a single male nipple within these pages, but Haydée's boobs are bigger than her head and neck combined. Page two has Mercédès on her back with a strapless dress that does an excellent job of helping you pinpoint her nipples. Which...you do you, girl, but I have a problem that it was such a stark contrast from the portrayal of men. That's not my thing.

Ever since finishing the actual novel, I’ve been obsessed with the Count and have sought out different sources and adaptations—mostly to put off the urge to reread the book 2 times in a year. I just don’t have time over the holidays to read the book again; but I did have time to enjoy this manga adaptation.
Though not 100% true to the source material, the way this story was abridged works. It works even more so if the reader has read the unabridged version, because you get those little aha moments when a plot point or person has been cut or reduced. Then there is also the Japanese “improvisations” where a certain character is concerned.
The art style—typical in manga—is beautiful and appealing. I highly recommend this version of the Count of Monte Cristo; preferably read after reading the original, but will work for a readers first foray into this wonderful tale of revenge. Definitely a 5-star read.

Résumer l'histoire du Comte de Monte Cristo en un seul tome, c'est impossible. Mais cette version est la meilleure que j'ai lue. On y retrouve le charme troublé d'Edmond Dantès, ravagé par sa vengeance, que le lecteur comprend, mais qui va parfois trop loin aussi, est bien transmis. Le personnage, dans le trait du dessin, mais aussi dans la nuance de ses choix, m'a fait penser à l'adaptation manga d'Arsène Lupin Le diadème de la princesse de Lamballe.
Les dessins sont magnifiques, très sensuels, avec des femmes magnifiques et un comte séduisant (c'est une version pour lecteurs plus âgés que celle de Nobi Nobi Le Comte de Monte-Cristo).
Le récit est complexe, les personnages multiples, et que c'est ce qui souffre le plus quand on décide de faire un seul tome pour une histoire aussi riche. Mais j'ai beaucoup aimé cette version, ça m'a donné envie de relire le roman!

Hello! Welcome to my review of The Count of Monte Cristo :)
So this book is one of those classics that i just love to re watch and re read all the time. I recently found the manga version of this book and was very intrigued to see what it was like. I found it a bit rushed but i still thoroughly enjoyed it. Manga usually takes me about half an hour to read so it was just a quick story i picked up to read in between my book hangover stages.
You know when you've finished a book or series and you don't want to start on another heavy read just yet, books like these are basically my fillers.
I loved the illustrations they were absolutely beautiful, I've always adored manga just from the illustrations and this was no exception. Ena captured the count perfectly and he is just how i imagined him from the original book.
So! To conclude this manga was short and sweet and i would likely pick it up again in the future. For anyone who loves the classics give this a try.

Alexander Dumas si sta probabilmente rivoltando nella tomba.
Ci tengo a precisare che sono partita fin da subito poco fiduciosa: ho acquistato il manga poichè caldamente raccomandato dal ragazzo della fumetteria, mi sono lasciata convincere dato l'enorme sconto con il quale lo avrei acquistato. Continuo a chiedermi perché me lo abbia consigliato...
Il romanzo viene totalmente banalizzato: un sacco di parti che a parere mio richiedevano di essere approfondite vengono appena citate, magari con una piccola vignetta, per nulla evidente, in mezzo o ai bordi della pagina (spesso addirittura poco chiara).
Capisco che non sia facile rendere un romanzo di mille e passa pagine sotto forma di fumetto ma, data l'impresa pressoché impossibile, perché addirittura tentare?
Speravo almeno nei disegni ma che in realtà non sono nulla di eccezionale, senza infamia e senza lode.
È un libro che nell'insieme rimane abbastanza insignificante, non mi sento di dare una sola stella perché ho letto manga di gran lunga peggiori, ma sicuramente non lo consiglio.

This has to be one of the best condensed adaptations of this very complex story that I've seen, which is why it's so unfortunate that the author chose to turn Haydee into a sexy slave nymphet. To be fair, Dumas himself didn't treat Haydee's arc with much dignity either, but he at least didn't treat her like a sex object. Another pet peeve: there were no slaves in France at this time. In the original, the count repeatedly comments that, by traveling to France, Haydee is now a free woman; here, the author seems to be playing up the sex appeal of the slave girl drooling over her master. It's dehumanizing (especially considering the pedophilia issue that the manga industry has as a whole).
Again, all that being said, this is one of the better attempts at condensing this story down in an adaptation. The author has a good sense of what details are worth glossing over and what details are worth spending time expanding on. I love to see a take that doesn't spend half the entire story on Dantes in prison. I'm sure this author's porn is really well paced!

Auch wenn das Werk mit vielen charakterlich Klischees gefüllt ist, konnte mich das Buch überaus begeistern. Dies lag vor allem an dem spannenden Plot, der mich durchgehend gefesselt hat. Da wir den Protagonisten und seinem Rachefeldzug verfolgten, gab es in jedem Kapitel was zu erleben und es wurde nie langweilig. Den romantischen Aspekt hätte ich allerdings nicht gebraucht, da nämlich alles an Seiten auf die Rache verwendet wird kann man dies als Leser nicht nachvollziehen.
Der Artstyle war ebenfalls grandios, auch wenn ich mir mehr farbliche Darstellungen gewünscht hätte. Auch macht das Cover und der viel zu schiefe Kopf von mich ziemlich wahnsinnig.
Leider waren mir die ganzen Charaktere zu ähnlich gezeichnet, weshalb mir das auseinander schwerfiel. Gut, es gab ein Charakterverzeichnis allerdings benutze ich sowas nie. Ich finde man sollte ohne solche Hilfsmittel den Überblick halten können.
Insgesamt also ein tolles Werk mit ein paar Schwächen, die mir den Spaß am Lesen nicht genommen haben.

Edmund Dantes ma wszystko, co można by było zazdrościć: młodość, dobrą posadę marynarza, przyszłość jako kapitan, kochającą piękną narzeczoną, świetnego chlebodawcę Morella, kochającego ojca, wiernych przyjaciół Danglarsa i Fernanda, wreszcie także odrobinę odłożonych na przyszłość pieniędzy. Ale los, który dotychczas mu sprzyja, odwraca się. Młody człowiek trafia do więzienia i nie może się pogodzić z tym, że nawet nie wie dlaczego. Kiedy już wszystko wydaje się być skończone poznaje więźnia z celi obok, uważanego za szaleńca, ojca Farię. To on nie tylko daje mu nadzieję, ale i naukę czy też sposobność ucieczki. Z jego zadami i pewnym małym sekretem Dantes przemienia się w hrabiego Monte Christo i zamierza odebrać wszystko to, co inni zyskali wraz z jego zniknięciem. Intryga jednak wymyka się spod kontroli. Czy człowiek może wymierzać sprawiedliwość niczym Bóg?

J'ai lu aussi l'adaptation de la collection Manga classics et les deux sont très différents: les dessins de la version japonaise sont plus sensuels que ceux de la version américaine. C'est vrai: regarde la poitrine de Haydee, qui est toujours au bord de sortir de ses vêtements...
Les cadres sont beaucoup pleins de hachures et ils résultent très foncés.
J'ai eu des problèmes avec la histoire. La trame est un peu difficile si on n'a jamais lu le roman original. À un certain point c'était très confuse et je ne savait pas ce que s'était en train de passer. En outre, j'ai eu des problèmes avec la langue de cette adaptation.
C'est n'est pas mauvais mais j'ai préféré Manga Classics: The Count of Montecritsto, mais je pense, que c'est pourquoi c'est en anglais et je parle mieux Anglais que Français.
