This is a book I obtained through Rave Review Book Club.

The economy has collapsed and families have to scratch out an existence for themselves. They were self-sufficient in Peaceful Valley, Texas. What they couldn't grow they forged for in the near by forest. Several families live peaceful but difficult lives.

It is early morning in Peaceful Valley, Texas. Robbie and Sean are finishing breakfast and are preparing to leave their family behind. The young men are well equipped for their trip to Corpus Christi, Texas. They travel on foot and stick to the trees away from the main drag most of the way. They plan on returning within a year with young women who would be willing to leave everything behind and settle in the little valley. Robbie and Sean had no idea what they would encounter once they arrived at their destination.

Robbie and Sean are captured and separated the first morning in Corpus Christi. They find themselves under armed guard in a society that is run like a police state. Women outnumber the men and that is the way they want it because they want to control the population. Most of the men have been castrated with a select few that are able to create children. A large farm run by Sandra, is the main source of their food and supplies. Armed guards are everywhere. They trade for what they can't grow themselves.

The story is written in layers and bounces back and forth between locations. It is packed full of adventure and intrigue. The story is fast paced with many twists and turns all the way through. The characters and surroundings feel real.

My least favorite character is Sandra who operates the farm at Corpus Christi. She is a bully and would just as soon shoot and ask questions later. She rules the farm and community with strict rules that keep everyone in line. Most of the people are afraid of her wrath if they disobey the rules.

This is the second book in the series and is a complete story on its own. The first one is Into Autumn, A Story of Survival. The author is working on the next book in the series Into Winter which should be out next year. Reading Into Autumn first would give you a better idea what the families went through when the economy collapsed.
