When a mysterious book appears on the coffee table of Maggy and Ethan's house, they have no idea of the adventure in store for them. They discover a magical bookshop and its wildly eccentric proprietor, Mr.Catterwall, as well as his geriatric kitty, Achebe. But when the children are pulled into one of the books, they find themselves at the mercy of the Junglest and its many residents. The Junglest is a beautiful place where stories grow on trees. But Maggy and Ethan aren't the first to ever visit this magical land. The Pharess has come before them, and she has plans for a story all her own. So come in reader. Come in. Pull up a nice place under a blue tree, and enjoy the story. But fair warning: Not all stories are safe. Here there be Bearguars.
On its way to 5 stars. This is an incredibly imaginative, creative adventure. The characters really pop from the pages, as does the Jumanji-like setting. (Actually, Jumanji on steroids, if you can imagine!) Kids will LOVE this story. Librarians/Bookish people will LOVE this story. It needs a lot of editing (hence the 3 stars), but I know that the author has that in the works. I anticipate giving it a full five stars (ten?) for the updated edition. I liked the story. It got a little long winded in places and I found myself losing interest. Glad I stuck with it and read it through to the end. Definitely worth it. Great first book!
I LOVED this story! It has a very simple "bedtime story" feel, but avoids stereotypes common found in those stories. I enjoyed the relationships, not only between characters but also between the characters and the bookstore and trees. Expertly ties in all aspects of the story, but left me wanting more.
very entertaining. reminded me of the neverending story. at first i was skeptical as i thought the dynamic between the siblings was a bit exaggerated and the mother was an idiot. thankfully, she left after the first chapter and, once the adventure began, the brother-sister tension mellowed. it would have been nice if there had been a bit more explaining as to how this world that seemingly just came into existence had a thousand-year backstory mr. catterwall knew all about but it was an engrossing world so that was easy to move past. i especially enjoyed the sidebars with achebe and wish he'd had a bigger role. hopefully there will be a sequel, with or without the kids from this book but definitely with the bookstore, or maybe even a prequel for mr. ccatterwall and achebe? highly recommend.
Such a cute story! Very fun adventure from beginning to end. Will be reading to my kid when he gets old enough. Elements of Jumanji mixed with Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium.
Perrine's imaginative bookshop provides the perfect backdrop for thinking about "your'" story and how you write it. For youngsters and the young at heart adults who relate to Harry Potter this is a delightful romp and good fun.
