When a burned body is found in a disused signal box, suspicion falls on lonely teenager Gabriel Webb. There’s no doubt he was at the scene of the crime, but does he really deserve what awaits him in prison?
DS Imogen Grey is certain there’s more to the case than meets the eye. But while she struggles to convince those around her of the truth, her partner DS Adrian Miles is distracted by his own demons.
When a brutal double murder is reported, their investigation is stopped in its tracks. Is the body in the box even who they thought it was? The duo realise Gabriel might have been locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. But with enemies watching Gabriel’s every move, they may be too late.
Miles and Grey are back in the thrilling new novel from bestselling author Katerina Diamond, perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter and M.J. Arlidge.
Abuse The Angel is the third book in a crime thriller series from Katerina Diamond and you need to read the first and second books (The Teacher and The Secret) to appreciate the background and overall series storyline. Each book has a particular murder enquiry that the main detectives, DS Adrian Miles and DS Imogen Grey are working on but there are a number of other background stories and threads that are developed from the first book through to this one.
Gabriel is a young man wrongfully held on remand in prison and the writing gives a great sense of the fears and power plays in a prison and how threats to outside family and friends can dictate what happens inside. Miles, Grey and their computer wizard colleague Gary, spot a connection between the murder Gabriel is held for and other murders. Their investigation opens up a web of abuse and criminal activity on a much larger scale than this crime alone, dating back over many years. Deep down they know who’s behind it but getting the evidence before the criminals catch up with them is a race against time where many people will get hurt.
In my opinion, this book is the best of the 3, maybe because it brings everything together. The story writing has become more mature and settled into a groove with well-established characters and in particular how the relationship between Miles and Grey has developed. There is always an attempt to make the main detectives damaged in some way and typically with alcohol problems, but that's not the line taken here. The other elements that add psychological risk and fear are believable and totally in-line with their careers and background. New characters are added to the main story and they are well drawn with plenty of suspicions and motivations that add suspense and intrigue.
I really couldn’t put this book down, it’s emotive, pacey, and captivating which keeps you gripped the whole way through. I would highly recommend this book.
I really liked The Teacher and The Secret by Katerina Diamond so I had high hopes for her new book The Angel and I was certainly not disappointed. It was a very thrilling story that I did not want to put down. I really like the character of Gabriel and the detectives Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles. I can't wait for the next book by this author. I would like to thank NetGalley and Avon Books UK for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
The angle is the third book I've read by Katerina diamond and they just keep getting better and better every time, it's so good I even had to take it to work to get my fix.keeps you flipping the pages untill the end great edge of you seat crime thriller.
Having read The Teacher and The Secret, the first 2 books in this series I was excited to start the 3rd, with all the regular characters that I loved from the previous stories.
Have to say the books just get better and better as the series progresses. I was captivated from the start and feel like the main characters Miles and Grey are as familiar to me as my friends or family!!
Gabriel is wrongfully arrested and sent to prison. You really feel the overwhelming powerlessness of having youse freedom taken away from you and the sheer terror of being in prison.
A must read book. Looking forward to starting the next one in this series “ The Promise”
Gabriel Webb was a killer. He didn’t know it yet, but before the day was out he would know what it felt like to take someone’s life.
Gabriel Webb knows he is different, his parents have washed their hands of him. But as long as he has his girlfriend he knows he will be fine. But unfortunately for Gabriel it's about being at the wrong place at the wrong time.... A body of a burned man is found and the suspicion falls on him. Imogen Grey is fronting the case and she has her doubts that he is the killer. Then another two unconnected murders are found and Grey and Adrian Miles must start to put the pieces together to solve the puzzle. And is Gabriel really innocent...
This series just gets better and better, the prologue had me totally open mouthed and each chapter I was .... speechless
It was tense, exciting and the writing was excellent. As the final pieces come together I couldn't turn the pages quick enough. Although this could be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the other 2 in the series. The Teacher The Secret I did however come in on The Secret book 2. This is one of my favourites for 2017 for sure.
I’ve really enjoyed all of this Imogen Grey/Adrian Miles series but I think this is my favourite so far. This could be due to familiarity with the characters but also that you know that Katerina Diamond is going to provide you with a darn good read. This one concerns two apparently unconnected deaths - one in a disused railway signal box and the others of two pensioners and their dog, the latter being unbelievably savage. The pace of the story is excellent and it’s full of twists and turns. It does help to have read the previous two books as the ongoing attempt by Miles to prove that his ex wife’s partner Dominic Shaw is guilty of various crimes is continued from the last book. The other continuation is the relationship between Imogen and Dean Kincaid and to understand his background beyond the scope of this book is useful. I’m rooting for those two although I appreciate their relationship is a conflict between her police duties and Dean’s past.
Wow!! I love this series.. thank you so much to Avon Books UK via Netgalley for the chance to read and review this book. Imogen Grey is a fantastic character... strong and tough but we see another side to her in this book. her relationship with her partner is honest and together they work to solve the crimes and help the honest people caught up in it all. if you haven't read any of this authors books.. why not???
This is the third book in a crime thriller series and you need to read books 1 and 2 first (The Teacher and The Secret), to appreciate the background and overall storyline. Each book has a particular murder enquiry that DS Adrian Miles and DS Imogen Grey are working on but there is a number of other background stories and plots that are developed from the first book.
In "The Angel", Gabriel is a young guy wrongfully held on remand in prison for a very suspicious and convenient murder. The writing style of Katerina Diamond gives a great sense of the fears and power plays in a prison and how threats to outside family and friends can dictate what happens inside. Miles, Grey and their computer wizard colleague Gary, spot a connection between the murder Gabriel is held for and other murders, and the investigation opens up a web of abuse and criminal activity on a much larger scale dating back over many years. Deep down they know who’s behind it but getting the evidence before the criminals catch up with them, their loved ones and Gabriel, is a race against time where many people will get hurt.
I have been a HUGE fan of this author ever since her first book The Teacher, a book that completely lived up to all its hype. It was shocking and gory and absolutely terrifying but had me and many other readers gripped. One of the main reasons I loved it so much was the characterisation. I just loved Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles- their teamwork and camaraderie felt effortless and realistic and I was desperate for more! The Secret followed and kept up the momentum of this compelling crime series which leads me to her latest bestseller The Angel. Has she run out of steam yet? OMG I am so pleased to tell you that she hasn’t and this is yet another 5 star addition to the series!
The opening chapter is one of the most shocking ones I have come across recently and catapulted me directly into such a dark and disturbing storyline, but I couldn’t for the life of me work out how it related back to that prologue! Both Imogen and Adrian are still having problems with their personal lives and it’s that outside influence and insight that really lifts this book up onto a different level. I don’t want to go into any details as they may prove spoilers for the previous books, although if you haven’t read them already then you are really missing out!
The scenes set within the prison here were terrifying. I really felt for Gabriel as there seemed to be more fear and violence inside than anything he faced whilst in the outside world. And all the time we are unsure WHY?! This was the thread that I found the most distressing, watching Gabriel desperately try to stay out of trouble but unsure who he can trust. I felt so helpless, I mean it’s the stuff of everyone’s nightmares isn’t it? Locked away for a crime you didn’t commit and nobody believing it when you protest your innocence? But then the crimes kept coming, each one more abhorrent than the next and Grey and Miles have to battle their own demons if they are to help save Gabriel.
You may need a strong stomach for some of the scenes described here but it seems to be the authors trademark now to explore unspeakable crimes and the damage they wreck along the way, families destroyed and lives ruined, with her flawed but amiable duo there to pick up all the pieces. But for me this dark and gritty series is a must read and I would highly recommend it to other lovers of that subgenre of crime fiction. I am now on countdown again for more Grey and Miles…..bring it on!!!!
I am shocked, emotional, devastated it's ended. This might possibly be my favourite in the series so far.
This book linked everything from the previous book - Dominic, Dean, Andrea, so many others. It's unreal how their stories came together, how Dominic had been after Adrian for a VERY long time. I read the start of the book with Martina and Charlie and was so confused how it was going to end up in the story and WOW IT DID. I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING. Even when you think you know, you don't know.
We see Gabriel turn from an innocent goth nearly adult into a loyal, hardened by circumstances and ending up something he didn't want to be, all to protect himself and his friends. Ash is an awful character who I hated (Katerina really has a way of making me feel real emotions for the characters).
MY HEART BROKE FOR ADRIAN. He was finally on his way to happy and then something so unbelievably heartbreaking happened. It was cruel and so harsh, but strengthened the story and the emotions for it. I love the relationship between Imogen and Adrian, it's grown so much in these 3 books and I'm so excited to see it grow more. I am rooting so much for Imogen and Dean still, Dean's past really was shown in this book which was also so heartbreaking, and really shows why he needed Elias, why he finds it hard to trust people.
Another amazing book by Katerina with even more corruption, some heartbreak, and a few beautiful friendships.
This was a very good crime novel, especially because I became invested with one of the main characters - Gabriel - who is a young adult inadvertently walking into a situation that gets him accused of killing a man. I thought the author captured the horrific conditions in prisons very well and even though I often had to take a deep breath because it was so realistic, the unfolding of the plot kept me turning the pages. The other characters were equally engaging and showed that darkness descends on people for a reason. They may ultimately be nonredeemable and despicable but as a reader it made me think that prison will never turn back the clock for them, in the contrary, it usually makes things worse. So this is a great read because thought-provoking and well written!
The Angel by Katerina Diamond is the 3rd book in the Imogen Grey series.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books) DS Imogen Grey has put her past behind her and settled into her new precinct. She has even learned to trust her partner DS Adrian Miles. They have become friends. Although they don’t always play by the rules, they are both top-notch detectives. Imogen has recently discovered the identity of her father. Miles has recently discovered that his ex-wife’s husband should be behind bars.
My Synopsis: Gabriel Webb ends up in jail for starting a fire in an abandoned train signal station. The burnt body of a man found in the building makes it manslaughter. 19-year old Gabriel is not prepared for prison, and a man named Asher is about to make it a really unpleasant experience.
An elderly couple are savagely beaten and killed, their murder plastered over the web for all to see. There seems to be no motive for the crime. Imogen and Adrian enlist the help of Gary Tunney, the police forensic computer technician, to look into the couple’s financial situation, and that of their son, the sole beneficiary. What he finds is perplexing. Gary has also been secretly looking into Dominic’s business activity for Adrian. Dominic is the sleaze married to Adrian’s ex. That information is somewhat perplexing as well.
Their new boss, DCI Mira Kapoor is still an unknown entity. Neither Imogen nor Adrian know whether they can trust her. They’ve both been burned by their superiors before.
Meanwhile. Imogen knows her relationship with Dean, an ex-con, would be frowned upon by the force, and probably affect her chance of promotion, but she’s not sure she cares right now. She is aware, however, that she will have to make a decision soon. She worries about his propensity towards violence and hopes that is in the past.
Adrian, too, has found someone. It’s been a long time since he has felt like this.
My Opinions: First, it is important you read the first two books before jumping into this one.
I love the relationship that is building between Imogen and Adrian. They are really starting to rely on each other. It feels like a true friendship.
I like how part of the story is told from Gabriel’s perspective, as a first-time offender in a prison environment. I think the author showed his fears and reactions to his situation quite well. Everything felt very real.
This book really ties up some loose ends from previous books, but still left the reader with the question “but what happens next?”
There are a lot of characters in this, but due to the smooth writing, everything is clear. Katrina Diamond writes exceptional prose, with deep characters, wonderful plots, and enough twists that you have to pay attention. I highly recommend this series!
The cover of this book includes a quote from Heat proclaiming that Katerina Diamond is the 'new Queen of Crime' and after reading THE ANGEL in one evening, I can wholeheartedly agree. Enthralling, powerful, and completely absorbing, this book will suck you in and hold you captive until the very last line.
When a burned body shows up, it isn't long before DS Grey and DS Miles have found their suspect, young Gabriel Webb. But uneasy about sending Gabriel to prison for an accident doesn't sit well with them and how on earth will Gabriel survive on the inside? But Grey and Miles are soon distracted when a double murder occurs which appears to make absolutely no sense. Add on to that DS Miles personal investigation into the man that has taken away his family and DS Grey's secret relationship with a convict, and there are far too many questions and not enough answers. But as the detectives do what they do best and suspect everyone, finally some of the pieces begin to slot together and it even looks like the two cases are connected. But will they be able to uncover the truth before it is too late for Gabriel?
THE ANGEL by Katerina Diamond is an example of crime fiction at its finest. The characters are engaging, realistic, and sometimes terrifying. I really enjoyed the way the story switched from the detective's investigation to Gabriel in prison, and as the danger increased for him, I felt my heart race as time was running out. With plenty of twists and unexpected turns, there were lots of surprises along the way, and this story is excellently paced as you can feel the clock ticking down. I picked THE ANGEL up at 8 p.m. and read it right through until 1.30 a.m. because I just had to know!!! THE ANGEL by Katerina Diamond is exactly what you want and need in a crime fiction novel so follow the link above and get reading!
*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the Publisher
Jaaaaaysus! I am ashamed to say that this is the first book by Katerina Diamond I’ve read – thankfully I have the other two books on my kindle and I’m now even MORE excited to read them!
Set in Exeter, the reader embarks on a journey which sees us coming face to face with mistakes, loss, secrets, fear, bullying, trust, weakness, abuse, the past, corruption and power & control.
OMFG what a fan-bloody-tastic opening!! Frenzied, fast-paced, compelling and the #killerhook pulled me into the pages! The pace was perfect – building up just at the right moments to deliver the #Booms as each chapter ended. The #justonemorechapter syndrome kicked in many times! I loved the prison focus and how emotive the storyline was. The narrative flowed and twists had me guessing!
This book had some awesome characters! I can’t go through them all…and trust me, I want to, but that would spoil it for everyone. Gabriel Webb- rebellious youth, young and in love…finds himself in prison- one, stupid decision…His vulnerability comes through but then we see him grow, mature and his courage and inner strength take the lead. Such a great character!
DS Imogen Grey – wow! Love her! Intelligent, witty but maybe not so clever when it comes to her personal life. I love the fact that she is dating an ex con. She also has a real human side that leaps off the pages and made her very relateable.
DS Adrian Miles – Imogen’s partner. Great banter between the two. He is a bit of a tease and a flirt. Has a lot to deal with, especially with his ex-wife and her new hubby- who by the way is quite an arsehole. Lucy was another great character. I couldn’t decide whether I liked her or not initially…but once the frost melted, she really grew on me…but OMG!!! That is all I am saying about that!
Dean: really loved him! Badboy with a good heart! Ok, maybe not exactly but he did have a lot of redeeming qualities. He could be somehwat unreliable and as the reader, you just did not know where to stand with this guy.
The baddies- we come across a few undesirable characters within this story – both inside prison and on the outside. The author writes them in such a way that at times you feel sorry for them, but other times you just want to kick the living daylights out of them! Read the book, I’ll let you decide!
I was fascinated by the characters, storyline and setting of this novel as well as the different relationships and how everything tied together. Great dialogue and an emotive storyline kept me turning the pages. Each character seemed to have their own journey and demons to overcome. I enjoyed how I was taken in different directions and kept guessing pretty much every step of the way. I was not even disappointed when I figured out a few things…as I was never 100% sure I was right!
Do I recommend this book? You bet your sweet arse I do! Edgy, intense and full of twists that keep you on your toes- I highly recommend you grab a copy of The Angel today!
This book ties up lots of the loose ends from books 1 and 2. It starts very slowly and took toll around page 200 to be the usual unputdownable book that is expect from this author. Hence the score
Definitely one you could pick holes in but blimey once it picks up the pace it goes full throttle
Imogen Grey andAdrian Miles are a dream team and very likable and ‘real’
I felt the author struggled to feed in the storylines for the previous two books for readers who hadn’t read those and it felt clumpy and messy
I received a copy of this title from NetGalley. It does not impact my review.
In the past couple of weeks I have read all three Imogen Grey books and it’s definitely become one of my favorite series. Katerina Diamond has made her way onto my auto-buy list.
As with the first two books in the series, there is a lot going on in this story. There are several mysteries with connecting threads and Diamond really weaves them together effortlessly. I never felt confused and even though I didn’t know how things would come together, I knew that they would. Another thing I love about Diamond’s writing is that even though she has very intricate plotlines, she does not sacrifice any character development. I feel like many books focus on one or the other, but she really pulls off both. Even though it means that the books are a little longer than I usually like to read, I don’t mind the length because of how engrossed in the story I am.
In The Secret we got a lot of Imogen’s background and in The Angel we get more of Adrian’s. He’s not a perfect person by any means, but I adore him. He’s gone through a lot in his life, and in this book, and I really admire how he still manages to just keep going. I love his partnership with Imogen and how much they trust each other and are there for each other. I still like that their friendship is platonic, though I wouldn’t mind if it moves in a different direction in the future. Which brings me to Dean. I absolutely loved Dean in The Secret and I have to say he was one of the reasons I was anticipating this books so much. His relationship with Imogen is very complicated and it might very well be a circumstance where love is not enough to make it work, but I’m still shipping these two hard.
The other POV we get in this book is Gabriel, a young, slightly rebellious, guy who is really a sweet kid at heart. He gets arrested for inadvertently killing a man from a fire he started and winds up in jail. As you may expect, a young cute guy in prison attracts the wrong kind of attention. I felt so, so bad for all that Gabriel had to go through, but I really liked getting his POV and seeing how he grew as a person because of it.
Overall, I just really loved The Angel. Katerina Diamond weaves together a complex mystery with really compelling characters. I felt like this book was a little less dark than the first two in the series and I liked that. I also like that justice is always served in her books, though there is often a bit of a moral grey area included. This series has become one of my favorites and I’m really going to miss Imogen and Adrian until their next book.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books for an advance copy of The Angel, the third police procedural to feature DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles of Exeter police.
Grey and Miles are called out to an arson attack in a disused signal box where a burnt body has been found. They quickly zoom in on Gabriel Webb whose distinctive clothing marks him out on CCTV and when he admits to lighting a fire he is remanded. Something, however, makes them think there is more to the fire and unidentified body than the obvious but they don't have much time to investigate as they are immediately plunged into their next case, the brutal murder of two pensioners and their dog and the YouTube video of it.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Angel which is a gripping read with plenty of twists and turns and a satisfactory if ironical ending. The plot has two main narratives, that of Grey and Miles's investigation and Gabriel's troubles in prison. Both are tense and interesting with some unexpected twists. I'm not the biggest fan of multiple points of view but in this case it works well, didn't distract me as they often do and the links between them grow stronger as the novel proceeds. The way Ms Diamond weaves disparate events into a larger story is clever and admirable as it can't be easy keeping track. The novel is well paced with new information in almost every chapter and while there is much to assimilate it is easy to read and follow.
I like the mix of professional and emotional as it makes the characters seem more real. Tom is still trying to get something on the dangerous Dominic Shaw, his ex-wife's current husband, who always seems a step ahead and nurture a budding new relationship. Imogen is still struggling with the reality of being a police officer and being in a relationship with a convicted killer, especially when these cases put them on a collision course. It seems a bit much that both protagonists have trouble in their lives but, somehow, it works well and adds an extra dimension to the novel.
The Angel is a great read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
This is an absolutely stunning book, a great story perfectly executed. It was one of the few books that I had to have a day to get over, I just couldn't start another book because it played around my head for hours.
We start with a prologue from back in 1986 and I tried to keep this all in mind whilst reading the rest of the book knowing that there would be some relevance later. When I finished the book, I totally got it but had to come back and re-read the prologue, just to reassure myself.
Chapter 1 starts right up to date in 2017 with the opening line “Gabriel Webb was a killer. He didn't know it yet, but before the day was out he would know what it felt like to take someone's life.” I was intrigued from the start and just had to know who had died, how and why Gabriel would take someone's life.
Gabriel is a complex character, in fact all the characters are flawed and complex but this makes for excellent reading. He and his girlfriend, Emma, are both Goths, they dress for themselves and are misfits in society, but underneath all the black trousers, chains and face paint are two loving and caring people. As the first line indicated, by the end of the day Gabriel was sitting in a police cell being questioned about a body.
The two detectives, Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles, could solve this case quickly but Imogen has a nagging feeling and a soft spot for Gabriel, and too many coincidences play on Adrian's mind, that they have to dig deeper. They have their work cut out to solve the murder and obvious mystery surrounding it, the case is not at all straightforward and it really takes its toll on both of them, particularly memories coming to the surface for Imogen. The murder is not simply about one person killing another, it's so multi-faceted, wheels within wheels that in reality, it's doubtful the case would really be solved.
The chapters mostly run in turn with Gabriel's life and then the two detectives. I couldn't wait to get back to Gabriel's chapters to find out how he was surviving in the young offenders' detention centre. He had such a hard and violent time and was totally unprepared for it – a real eye opener.
I loved all the characters, Imogen and Gabriel particularly, and they were so well constructed that they felt like real people, someone I might know.
This is the first book I've read by Katerina Diamond and although this one is book 3 in the detective series it is a complete story and can be read as a stand alone novel. I would totally recommend starting with book 1, The Teacher, and move on to book 2, The Secret – I've already loaded them onto my Kindle ready to start over again. .
Nicely twisty British procedural that gives you two perspectives- that of the detectives and that of the accused- in alternating chapters. I hadn't read the first two books but I honestly don't think I missed anything because Diamond has created such complete characters in Imogen and Adrian. Adrian's private look into his son's stepfather leads to some intriguing connections to the murders he is meant to investigate with Imogen. I was also very taken with Gabriel, the teen accused of murder and at risk in his cell. I found this complex enough to keep me engaged and surprised. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Try this one if you're a fan of the British procedural with a mixed pair of detectives who both have issues.
"She drifted away on her terms, wanting her husband to feel the pain of her loss. She wanted him to feel bad for speaking to her that way, she wanted him to feel as though he should have come home in time to wake her. She wanted him to feel like this was his fault. This time she would have the last word."
The third in this series about Imogen Grey and her partner Adrian Miles. Having read the first two books, I was really looking forward to this one. And once again I was not disappointed. Another amazing read that kept me on the edge of my seat from page one.
With thanks to Netgalley and Avon books for this ARC in exchange for an open and honest review.
Firstly I have mentioned this before but I love the cover art on Katerina Diamond's books. I feel as though I cut my finger on that broken glass. The Angel is the third book in the DS Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles series.
19 year old Gabriel Shaw is a goth who does not get along with his parents. Gabriel set fire to a waste paper bin in a disused railway signal box which resulted in a huge fire. Unbeknownst to him a man was sleeping rough downstairs and he perished in the fire. Gabriel admitted to starting the fire but claimed he put it out before leaving the signal box. Gabriel is remanded in custody for arson and is disowned by his parents. Imogen and Adrian are sure Gabriel is innocence and try to search for the homeless man.
In a another case Patty Wallis and her husband are brutally murdered in their own home. A strange symbol drawn in blood is on the wall. When a video of the murder is posted on the internet Imogen's boyfriend Dean Kincaid recognises the symbol but he can't remember from where.
At the end of The Secret DS Miles had discovered that his son Tom's stepfather Dominic Shaw was a crook possibly involved in human trafficking. When Adrian finds out that the Wallis's son made donations to Dominic's company he becomes convinced Shaw is involved in the murders. When Dominic arranges for Adrian's girlfriend to be murdered and then framed for the crime he decides to run away.
I enjoyed the POV of Gabriel during his time on remand. When Gabriel's family and girlfriend are threatened by a prisoner he has to find a way to protect them.
Diamond has yet again weaved another dark, complex tale with multiple threads that are neatly tied in a bow by the end of the book. Diamond is a wonderful storyteller who is now one of my go to authors I can trust. I recommend you read the whole series to understand the history of Grey and Miles.
Brilliant! I really liked The teacher and The Secret, and I was looking forward to read the next one in the series and I wasn’t disappointed. I am an avid Thrillers reader but very few authors make it on my favourite authors list, Katerina Diamond is one of them. Love her style. Her books are an fast read and are that kind of books that wanted to finished them but not to (only readers can understand the struggle). DS Grey and DS Miles are called to investigate a fire, when they arrived they found a body burnt and is impossible to identify. It is obvious that was an arson. From the CCTV they identified one of the guys, it is Gabriel Webb. It seems to be an easy case but something bothers the two detectives. Are the detectives’ guts right or they are being paranoid? The detectives are at cup de sac, they do not have nothing apart for the CCTV footage, not even an ID for the body. To complicate things DS Imogen and DS Miles, have issues with their partners and families. Will they be able to focus on their cases or their private life will put them in trouble? Highly recommend to read the previous two books, The Teacher and The Secret, to understand better the two detectives and what happens in their lives.
Arlidge.
My Review
This is book three in the series, whilst you could technically read this as a standalone I think you would enjoy it more reading the previous and getting the back story. Gabriel Webb and his beautiful girlfriend are goths and end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Gabriel is in jail awaiting his punishment, he won't give his girlfriend or the people he was with. DS Grey and Miles are assigned to the case and soon suspects not only is Webb innocent but there is more, much more to this case.
Both detectives have things going on from their past, more so Miles which has a huge part in this story. Grey also faces issues from her past making her question the thing she holds above all else, her loyalty to the job. It has heat, relationships, jail life, sex, violence, murder, sexual references, police investigation and partnership. I love the friendship between the two detectives and how they work together.
The chapters are relatively short which as you know I do love in a story, great for when you are working but if your concentration is off it helps for dipping in and out. I think we get to see a wee bit more to who the characters are, the more personal side without losing focus on the actual case, investigations.
The prison scenes with Webb are hard going at times, it isn't always the what happens more the threat, ominous atmosphere and psychological torture. Diamond creates split themes in the book, the jail with Webb, the police investigation, the deaths, the police personal lives but does so where it all links and doesn't detract from each story line. I think that can be a balsy move by authors, too much going on and the reader becomes bored and or frustrated but if you do it right you reader just want more! 4/5 for me this time, I cannot wait to pick up book four!
This is the third in this series after The Teacher and The Secret and, to get the best from this book with regard to the backstory and development of the main characters, I'd read these two first. That said, the main story contained within this book is complete so it can be read as a standalone although I wouldn't recommend it as it does connect back to previous books a little. A burned body is found and a culprit, Gabriel, swiftly arrested and sent to prison on remand. We hear from him and his experience of prison life throughout the book. We see how he changes, how prison life affects him, how he does things he would never have even thought himself capable of. Dog eat dog and only the fittest/smartest survive. But, is he guilty of what he is charged with? DS Imogen Grey isn't sure but all the evidence points to him. This doesn't stop her though and, together with DS Adrian Miles, continues to try and fill in the missing pieces of that puzzle, the least of which is who's actually dead?. Then a rather nasty double murder stops all this side-investigation as Grey and Miles are needed on this new case. A useful move indeed as investigations here throw new light on the burned body. How are the two connected, is Gabriel even guilty and, if not, who is? I simply devoured this book in only a couple of sittings. I love this series; the characters, the writing, the storyline, especially the plotting all just work for me. Can't say why, they all just do. I love the relationship between Grey and Miles. They are of equal rank - again something a little different these days - and their relationship is akin to brother and sister. Friends and rivals, with bickering aplenty but deep down, very close and protective over each other. In this book Miles has his own worries with respect to his son's new step-father and how he is trying to screw Miles over with his relationship to his boy. Grey herself has her own troubles to contend with, mostly in the shape of her erstwhile bad-boy boyfriend who, in this book, has a bit more of a main part to play. The plot is rather intriguing. At times I had absolutely no idea where we were going but, when we did get there, it all made complete sense and I kicked myself for missing things I should have seen. Conversely, I focused on some things that were completely superfluous. Basically, some great sleight of hand by the author here! Putting aside the main story for a moment, the best thing in this book for me was Gabriel's journey. I have already touched on it earlier here but the way that prison, even just remand, affected him had my heart breaking. And for what...? All in all, another winner from Ms Diamond... roll on the next one. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Crime fiction at its finest. Katerina Diamond pulled me in to the mystery of her detective novel. The Angel took me through so many twists and turns I swore I was going in circles.
Detective Imogen Grey is on the case of a burned body found in an unused signal box. Authorities have arrested Gabriel Webb, a lonely teenager, for the crime. Imogen believes there is more going on with the case than she can see, but her partner Adrian Miles is too distracted by his own demons to give it any attention. Then a brutal double murder puts their investigation at a standstill as new questions arise. Such as, do they have the correct identity on the burned body? If not, who is it? And, has Gabriel been wrongly accused?
Anyone who knows me knows that I like my mystery and thrillers to be on screen. Rarely though I will find a book that draws me in and captures my attention enough to actual read the genre. Katerina has managed to do just that. This is my first read by her and I had no idea that this was the third book in a series. This read like a complete standalone novel.
The plot and the twists were fully engaging and had my attention from almost page one. I’ll admit I was skeptical and didn’t want to like it so it took me awhile to admit that I did. It was so realistically told, I could picture some of the true crime shows I’ve watched as I read. As each new revelation came about I found my heart pounding as I wondered if they were going to solve the crime in time.
Having read The Teacher and then The Secret I was eager to finish The Angel too this week. I was not disappointed. Katerina Diamond builds her plots with insights into situations that most of us are not unfortunate to experience. The pace of each book is excellent, and the puzzles unravel at a perfect rate. Subjects are not an easy read at times but this adds to the authenticity of the premise.
As some of tge background of characters is briefly reitterated in her books they coukd be read as stand alones, but I think something of Katerina's skills of building plots within plots would be lost. I highly recommend The Angel along with The Teacher and The Secret. Heading off to pre-order The Promise being published 20th September 2018.
It pains me to say that this was a very disappointing read. I wanted to DNF it but out of loyalty to a series I've previously enjoyed, I pushed through. The book seemed to try to focus on too many personal issues of the two main protagonists and as a result the investigation felt like more of an afterthought, which for a crime thriller makes for pretty dull reading. There were also POV chapters that felt as though they added nothing more than extra pages to the book.
Utter implausible tosh! Bizarre storylines that just didn’t go together, two main characters with lives that are just beyond believable - and as to the final resolution tied into the prologue - what a load of rubbish. I’m done with this detective series.
