Mercer Mayer is an American children's author and illustrator. He has published over 300 books, using a wide range of illustrative styles. Mayer is best known for his Little Critter and Little Monster series of books.
First sentence: Early in the morning, Mom wakes me and says, "Get up, Little Monster, it's time for school."
Premise/plot: Little Monster goes to school and makes a new friend, Yally. Yally isn't the most likable or outgoing--in fact, for most of the day (most of the book) he's pout-y and grumpy. But Yally and Little Monster end the day friends at last.
My thoughts: When I think of Mercer Mayer I typically think of Little Critter. I love, love, love, love Little Critter. I remember so many Little Critter books clearly. I had a vague memory of his other series, the Little Monster series. When I saw a couple of these at the local charity shop, I decided to buy them and read them.
I liked this one. I liked Little Monster. Little Monster is empathetic to Yally; Little Monster's kindness--persistent kindness--leads to a new friendship.
This one also has the detailed illustrations, but the story is actually present. It still lists a typical day, but there is interaction and characterization.
For a child about to enter the world of school, this is a 9 out of ten, The only way to make it better is to know your own child's school curriculum for the first day, making it as accurate as possible. and since all schools are different that was just not possible, with the exception of a very resourceful teacher who has read this book and decided to recreate it in the class room for the first day, which would be very cool. This was a good read.
This is such a cute first day of school book. There is one little monster who is having a really difficult time in school and getting annoyed with everyone and everything. The other children try to cheer him up, and in the end he and Little Monster become friends.

Another one from my Living Books collection. Little Monster is so adorable and kind, especially to his friend Yally, who low-key kinda has neurodivergant vibes.
A story by Mercer Mayer about making a new friend at school. Join Little Monster at school on a fun-filled day as he explores different subjects with his classmates and makes friends with Yally, an often difficult fellow student.
There is a Wanderful app version available based on the original Living books CD-ROM product.
