4.5 stars; because of the dated idea that fat-shaming anyone is okay at all, let alone humorous. Otherwise it'd be a five-star book for me just because of the joyful childhood memories this book brings me. "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the Zipperumpazoos bite!" was a family saying each & every night of my childhood, & I'm delighted to be passing it on now to the little ones in my life, each of whom giggle uproariously every time I say it to them.
This was my all time favorite bedtime book when I was little. I loved all the different monsters and how all their personalities and designs were so varied. It was written in a musical way that flowed very well and I loved that there was so much detail in every page.
Is there anything better than Mercer Mayer? I submit that there is not. And in regards to the “fat-shaming,” I read that part as more of a cautionary tale against drinking an unholy number of milkshakes. If that’s not something we want to instill into children, what is? Plus that monster finds love at the end so quit the bellyaching. Why no outcry over the ageism of “granny shoes”? Hmmm?
From the cover, I'd think I'd love this book -- cutesy (but not too cutesy) monsters, perhaps Mercer Meyer's Just For You-style illustrations (detailed, with old-fashioned quirks). But it's really disappointing. The rhymes are awkward and poorly constructed. And I especially hate the rhyme about the fat monster -- really, we don't need any more messages that if somebody is "fat," it is their own fault. Just not my thing sadly.
Oh my goodness what memories the thought of this little book brings back -- cuddled with my little daughter reading to her at bedtime, and a tickle and a hug and saying Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the zipperumpazoos bite as I switched off the light. She loved her Mercer Mayer books -- and why not? Cute, cute and very in tune with kids.
