As far as books that I've written go, this one is clearly the best! All joking aside, I hope this book helps everyone that reads it. If it does not, 1) I'm sincerely sorry and 2) Check out Arianna Huffington's book The Sleep Revolution or Meir Kryger's new book The Mystery of Sleep. Dr. Kryger has mad sleep scientist skills.

I don't think I've laughed so hard while reading a self-help sleep book. Winter mixes humor and information as he informs you what to do and what not to do to get the best sleep of your life. I can't attest to it working because I'm still convincing my other half to make some changes, but it has helped me realize what we're doing wrong and why we've both been so tired for so long.

On a side note, this took me forever to actually start reading (I put it on my currently reading shelf long before I actually started reading it) because I feared it would be dry and boring. I wanted the help with the sleep issues, but I didn't want a book that put me to sleep. This is not a book that will put you to sleep, though.

Happy reading!

Dr. Winter gives us sleep deprived people a fresh, new perspective on sleep disorders...in a very hilarious voice! I swear I was laughing at some point on every page! Not only is he knowledgeable, but he's got a sense of humor. Citing personal stories as well as facts, studies, and statistics, this book is a page turner! Great read!

This book has been so helpful to me because I have always had trouble sleeping. I have always had to rely on sleeping pills to go to sleep and even then my sleep is interrupted. I have received some useful advice from this book that I am using now to help my sleep and it has beem working without pills!

This book kept me up at night reading it so in that way it failed miserably at its mission to help me sleep. I laughed so much I had to read it in the guest bedroom. This guy is out there, but in a way I wish other doctors were. The thing about give yourself 2 points if you have a partner... Amazing.

This was first. I read an entire "scientific" book in two days. I'm not going to call it a page turner, but I will say it was compelling. I think this book might be the first in the genre of 'Self Help Humor' as it is very funny and edgy. I feel like I know a lot more about sleep at this point. This is not a conventional tips book. I guess that's why some people didn't like this book (either that or they don't like zombies...the author seems to like them a lot).

It’s a different kind of sleep book and it will make you look differently at your sleep.

It’s interesting that Dr. Winters wanted to write this book to be like a “sweeping” novel and while I think that’s a tall order considering it’s a book about sleep, I do have say I wasn’t bored and was mildly entertained by Dr. Winters’ witty comments and advice that was peppered throughout the book. This is not a book that will make you fall sleep more like it will help you to sleep better after it blows your mind with the science of sleep and how it affects your body.

Dr. Winters breaks sleep down into manageable bite sized chunks for us. He explains the science of sleep and the various ways poor sleep affects the body (It’s farther reaching than you think). He also goes into sleep hygiene and gives the tools needed to help ourselves to sleep better. In the second part of this book Dr. Winters talks about Insomnia and some of the more common sleep disorders and sleep interrupters. He also talks in detail about Cognitive Behavior Therapy and how it can make us better “sleepers” as well as talking about sleep aids and when it’s ok to use them. At the very least this book will give you insight into your sleep and help you identify why you are “not sleeping” but it will also give you some tools and ideas on how to fix your own sleep.

I work night shift so my sleep schedule is very much out of sync with the normal and I think the biggest thing I took away from this book is that I am actually sleeping during the day. Dr. Winters explains that sleep has stages and cycles…so those days where I am dozing and I can tell you ever song that played on the radio that was actually sleeping…well more like resting/light sleep but it counts towards the whole and that’s what matters. That takes away one of the biggest stresses about sleeping for me.

After reading this book I am looking at my sleep differently. I know what I have been doing wrong and now that I am armed with the tools Dr. Winter gave me in this book I can make changes to how I think about sleep and how I approach sleep. So far the changes that I have made have helped a lot.

I'm a pulmonary sleep fellow and I think this book has probably taught me more about insomnia than my fellowship. Chris (he told me to call him that when I spoke to him after the lecture) is a colourful individual to say the least. I really appreciate his insight, humor and wisdom. I will join an established sleep practice next year and there will be copies of this book in my clinic ready for my patients.

I've read a lot of articles and a book or two on sleep and this is my favorite one. Dr. Winter is really funny and for this book being on the subject of sleep, it didn't put me to sleep at all (while I was reading it). Now, I feel like I may have a chance against easy insomnia and I hope to never reach the hard insomnia phase thanks to this book.
Good night!

I won this book at a retreat where Dr. Winter spoke. He was hilarious. Easily the best professional presentation I have listened to. My wife and I have already both read the book and it's fantastic. Very helpful. Not pretentious.

This book is great! I learnt so much. I think some of the key learnings for me were:

1. I sleep. Even if I feel like I have not slept in days, I have slept.
2. Not sleeping is not the end of the world. I can still function the next day and will get through the day. I might feel like crap, but I will get through it.
3. My trying to sleep and worrying about not sleeping is probably causing a significant amount of my sleep problems.
4. Don't go to bed if you're not sleepy! Longer time in bed does not equate to better/ more sleep.

I could go on and on with what I learned. I loved this book. It was easy to read, concepts were explained well and it was really quite funny in parts!

I did not expect a book about sleep medicine to be so hilarious??? But it was. I loved all his funny little footnotes. Besides that, it seemed scientifically rigorous and medically accurate. His perspective on insomnia--basically, that a lot of the problem comes from patients' perception of the problem--really meshes with my experience as a therapist. I also appreciated the strong cautionary tone on sleeping pills while still acknowledging that they are useful or necessary in some situations.

I liked it enough to want to it own it, so I bought my own copy!

It's informative, well written, and funny. Having said that, it's also timely which is super for right now, but I assume some of his material will be dated in the future. Trendy jokes don't stand the test of time.

Anyway, I recommend it.

4/5; 4 stars; A-

This was a fact filled, very educational book. If you want to learn the ins and outs of how your brain uses sleep to stay healthy and how a lot of the body's systems work, this is the book for you. The author has a humorous style of writing and manages to convey technical details in a way that isn't overwhelming for those of us who aren't neurologists. He may have gone a bit overboard on the humor and I actually skimmed over the many 'fun experiments' which didn't add much to the educational component.

The author includes a lot of information about serious sleep related conditions like narcolepsy and sleep apnea, as well as some warnings for shift-workers. I learned about things I've always been curious about like restless leg syndrome, Parkinsons disease, and paradoxical insomnia.

The author gives some pretty good advice for creating a good sleeping environment and schedule. So much of his advice is sensible and the type of thing people always ignore. Thinking of my own kids and their complaints about being tired and their unwillingness to do all the sensible things I suggest like leaving the electronics out of the bedroom, sticking to a schedule, getting rid of the late coffee, etc, I can see how a sleep specialist might get a little jaded. Some reviewers seem to take offense to the doctors attitude that for most of us, we really don't have a sleep problem, we just need to make a few changes and think about it differently.

Anyway, this book was definitely worth a read for its many, many educational components.

I would have given it five stars but was pretty disappointed to see there was no mention whatsoever of the hormone related sleep difficulties that most women experience in different phases of life. Maybe, like my traditionally trained family doctor, the author only got about 3 microseconds of education on women's health issues. Maybe someday the medical profession will wake up to the fact that half the people on the planet are female!

Chris Winter, a neurologist and sleep specialist, details in a witty manner the biological process of sleep, the nature of Insomnia, and what to do about it. In a word, unless you have a physical reason (like Sleep Apnea or Narcolepsy) for sleep interruption and irregularities, you can do NOTHING after you have performed the sleep hygiene recommended by just about every sleep doc and blogger. Winters believes that insomnia is a problem of anxiety based on fear (so a mental problem), and it isn't that serious anyhow! Few if any have ever died of insomnia.

Insomnia is a self diagnosed disease and many people actually sleep an adequate amount, even while complaining...they have a problem with the quality of their sleep. This is very subjective area...no blood tests available to determine if there is a biological problem! So he feels that some Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may get your head screwed on straight, and that it is this understanding of the real psychological roots of your anxieties that can provide the best path out of this self diagnosis.

Of course, if you have a sleep study and something like Apnea is detected, then you should try the CPAP or an oral device. This 'hard' insomnia is treatable and it should be treated.

But if you are like me, who complain daily about some sleep interruption; get your mind straight, throw the cat out of the bed, go to bed a little later, turn off you lights, and get over it.

Actually, when I first got into this book, I was thrilled. It's been a while since I started havin sleep issues, and this book is like a little enclycopedia about the subjet, but still, while I was approaching the end of it, I was still looking for my sleep solution, which never came.

Do not get me wrong, that is a good book, it is going to give you nice tips and tricks to impress ladies at parties (and to sleep a little bit better), but be aware that, at the end of the day, it's all about Occam's razor, hence you're not going to solve your serious issues reading a book, but you have to work hard on it, though this nice manual helps.

How fitting that I should get this book. I have suffered with insomnia for years and it drives me absolutely mad. I have episodes where I can sleep fine...not great...but fine for about a few nights at a time. Then..the insomnia sets in. Sleepless nights for days to the point that I am hallucinating during the day. Exhaustion at an all time high....then the relief of the few days of sleep. I catch up on sleep during the days..and that's only for about 4 hours, tops. So yeah...this book pops up...I wanted to read it.

An informative read. Tips, facts, and advice that I can look back on from time to time to help me with my sleep issue. This is actually even more than that...it's the science behind those restless nights and it explained it quite well. There's always that dreaded hesitation when reading a non-fiction, health and wellness type book. Is it going to be informative? Is it going to keep me intrigued until the end? Am I going to get anything from this? Is this real science and medicine or some new hip trend of tips and advice that really does not help at all? I am pleased that this book did not disappoint. I am glad that there really was tips that I felt really mattered, really helped, really gave me some relief to my problem. This book...the author..told this book in a witty, humorous and relate-able way. It is a guide for me. It was not a cure-all for me..again, it's a guide. It's a starting point..and a relief. I keep this book on my coffee table as my go to when I am in need.

Very informative. Highly recommended read.

Thanks as always to the wonderful peeps at goodreads and W. Chris Winter of the The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It for my win of this book in exchange for an honest review to which I gladly and voluntarily gave.

5 big, fat glowing stars!

I have dealt with sleep issues for most of my self-aware life. Sometimes they were self-imposed problems (one more chapter, Mom, please?!), sometimes they were grad school grade sleep deprivation, sometimes they were because of anxiety/depression, but I could have found an answer for each and every problem had Dr. Winter published his book sooner.

I don't think I've ever read such an interesting and, frankly, amusing self-help book in my life. And, as it turns out, I am actually a better sleeper than I have been giving myself credit for. So, yea me! I'm excited to implement Dr. Winter's suggestions and get my sleep all the way back on track.

I am a sleep fanatic. This book is not too technical! If anything it is the opposite. If you are hardcore research guy (or gal!!) this book might be a bit too basic. I loved it and think it is perfect for the person who needs a sleep reset. Yes Dr. Winters does use humor, but for the most part it is highly entertaining. I did not feel takled down to or "dim"...not sure what that's about. I think you will really enjoy this book. I wish he had talked about female hormones.

A good, easy to read self-help book for those who suffer from insomnia. And it's funny, too! While not a sufferer myself, I learned some good information that I didn't know, as well as some tricks for family members to try. While detailed neuroscience studies are mentioned, the book is fairly easy to follow and does not get bogged down in too much medical terminology. Highly recommended.

As someone who doesn’t sleep well, who was diagnosed with apnea, seeing the title of this book caused an immediate need to shove aside all other books I was reading at the time and open this one up. I am glad I did. Now, admittedly, I did not read this book from cover to cover, but there is a reason for that.
For starters, I work in a mattress manufacturing company. While I might just be a little close to the news, sleep has appeared to be a growing topic in health and wellness. This book’s publication appears to ride that wave. Before succumbing to any of the other hype in sleep medicine, I say that one should read this book.
Written by W. Chris Winter, MD, a doctor specializing in sleep medicine, this book is a sarcastic, refreshing read when it comes to how we sleep as humans, the need for sleep, all the mechanics of sleep, and then all of the ailments impacting a good night’s rest.
Aside from the desire to absorb all the information that I could, I genuinely enjoyed reading this book.
In the beginning of the book, Chris works to dispel some of the myths about sleep, including the belief in the saying “I haven’t slept in days.” He seems determined to remove that belief once and for all, insisting that our body does sleep, no matter how hard we might even try to do otherwise. It’s the quality of that sleep that is the problem.
Once you get past some of the more general chapters, including descriptions on the different levels of sleep (the ever popular REM sleep being one of them), Chris then breaks the book up into more specific dealings, including medication for sleep, and some of the specific ailments including apnea, insomnia, and others. He even has a chapter on whether naps are good or bad.
This was where I skipped over places. Particularly the chapters on insomnias. I rarely ever suffer from anything of the sort. As interesting as it was, it just wasn’t useful to me, so I passed over them.
His descriptions for apnea however were spot-on. I learned even more than what my sleep doctors had imparted on me.
Overall, the book was a great read. Plenty of information and advice while maintaining a light-hearted tone that at times made me laugh. There is a lot I am taking from this book. While some may be tricky to apply, the trials will be worth it.
Chris does a superb job showing why he specializes in sleep medicine. It’s a must read for anyone having trouble with their sleep. I highly recommend it.

I read a lot of books in this genre. I find health books fascinating. However, this book is not that. The title is not at all accurate. There is no sleep solution here (other than go to a professional). The author spends SO MUCH time talking about his dislikes when it comes to patients, that if he were to delete all of that, this would barely be a pamphlet. I would have skimmed this if I could have, but I listened to the audio and I wasn't able to fast forward. Some of this was so painful to slog through. His 'Gomer Pyle' approach to health care didn't appeal to me. Some humor would have been nice or some sincerity.....but less whining please.

Informative and entertaining! I was a winner of an ARC sponsored by the Berkley Marketing Team of Penguin Random House. While I do not experience problems sleeping (at least I think I don't), I do know folks who do and had put my name in the pot and hoped for the best. In my opinion, Dr. Winter did an excellent job presenting the facts in an easy to understand format and I appreciated the chapter summaries. I plan on sharing/recommending this book.
