I’ve learned that not everything is what it seems. If you start to look too close, you uncover things people don’t want you to see. It’s why I hide. It’s why no one knows the real me. But he sees me. He sees the darkness in my heart but he’s not afraid, because he’s like me. They say opposites attract, but we’re proof that like-and-like are a far more potent combination.

Novalee Clarke is hiding from a past she wants to leave behind, and Jacen Kensington is running from his.

The thing about hiding and running is eventually the thing you’re trying to escape catches up to you.

And when it does?

It changes everything.

Y'all. This book.
6 Stars.

Confession: I LOVED THIS BOOK.

Lemme be honest real quick, Dark Hearts is my favorite book in the series. Don't get me wrong, I loved Rae & Cade and Thea & Xander, but I FLOVED Nova & Jace. They just lit my heart up y'all.

"Love doesn't conquer everything, it destroys you instead."

Nova and Jace are both the outcasts of their Friend Fam & their growth in this story is just beyond y'all.

Jace: "We both know we're different... damaged... and that makes a relationship impossible. Nothing good can come from something so broken."
------
Nova: "We're both complicated people, and maybe that's why we've been drawn to each other. We're made of the same stuff. Pain. Loathing. Anger. Betrayal. He's my mirror."

As I reading, I was on the edge of my dang seat. I wanted to know their pain. I wanted to discover the root it, which led to page swiping at a furious pace y'all. However, the more I read... the more I learned... the more my heart cracked open. Micalea killed it with the feels in this book. You will hurt for them. But know this, you will smile with them as well. <3

Novalee Clarke has learned that everything is not always as it seems. If you start looking closely you'll uncover things peole don't want you to see. This is why she hides and no one knows the real her. Jacen Kensington sees her though. He sees the darkness she carries in her heart but he's not afraid thought because he's just like Novalee. zthese two sre porrf thst like and like are one powerful combination. She is hiding from her past and he is running. However you can never hide or run from your past. It will come back, catch you, and change everything.

I really liked this book. I love in two character a strong attraction that you can feel while reading. Jace and Nova have this in spades. Jace is the brooding sometiems cocky character that everyone who reads this book is going to fall in love with. Nova is a real a spitfire whos ewual parta smart and sassy. Both of them are trying to escape their past. They both have built up walls around their heart and are sure that no one can get through. They just don't understand the undeniable force that true love has. Dark Hearts had me turning the page as quickly as I could. I loved the connection between these two. They know absolutely everything about each other from their shared past experiences. This is a story of love in its purest form. A story of struggles, loneliness, love, devotion and healing.

Micalea Smeltzer has beautifully written a story that lots of peole are sure to love.

"The Light in the Dark"-series started off on a rather tragic and real note with Rae of Sunshine. When Stars Collide was lighter and fun. With Dark Hearts, Micalea Smeltzer created a powerful and strong third novel. The story was powerful and strong just as much as the names of the characters. I'm not someone who pays too much attention to character names. I usually rant about them (especially in new adult novels) because most of the authors these days try to be a tad bit too original and crazy. The names of the main characters in Dark Hearts are original and not something you would hear everyday, but "Novalee Clarke" and "Jacen Kensington" are such powerful names, they fit the characters in the story to a T.

From the very first page Jace and Nova had some seriously great chemistry and that didnt't change throughout the book. They were so much in tune it was almost creepy but at the same time oh-so-great to watch. I had butterflies reading their scenes.

After the rather in my eyes weak second novel When Stars Collide, Micalea created a page-turning, real and romantic third novel. The story has some unexpected turns which were definitely not predictable at all. The incident in the end however was a little too much in my eyes. It came out of nothing and it felt both forced and rushed. It could've been left out easily.

**Carla's Five Star Review

Have you ever met someone who you are instantly drawn to? Have you ever felt that undeniable magnetic pull? Well, that is exactly what happens with Jace and Nova. They are both running from dark pasts. Due to past hurt, they have built what they thought to be impenetrable walls around their hearts. What they failed to realize is that no fortress is strong enough to keep true love out.

This book is awesome! I love a dark, broody hero, and Jace fits that role perfectly. And Nova? She is super smart and at times pretty sassy! These two connect on a level that most people don't. They are so attuned to one another they can sense what the other is thinking or feeling.

This story has a little bit of everything from friendship to love, heartbreak to happiness. Add a dash of drama and a pinch of angst and you end up with the perfect story! If you haven't yet had the pleasure of reading anything by this author, you really are missing out!

It really was an easy read and characters you can fall in love with but a real plot just wasn’t there. There’s so much she could have done with it and so many unnecessary scenes that burned pages without bringing value like the soap fight or snowed in sleepover at their friends place. The Christmas scene was necessary to see how he found his family, but a lot of unnecessary scenes.
It essentially felt like I was watching a reality dating show trailer with a ton of “look at the drama ahead” but in actuality it was manipulated with heavy editing to make you watch when there was no substance or truth there at all.
Any real issues that kept you reading were resolved so quickly and didn’t really build up or provide the emotional response like I was expecting or hoping for. It just didn’t tie together for me or make me want to read any others by her.
Overall, a 1.5 which I’ll round to a 2. Great characters and easy reading writing style but it lacked substance and a real plot and that push and pull for me. It was hot though. Great “spicy” scenes but that in itself isn’t enough for me. Some others may enjoy the style though for a hot or easy non heavy summer read.

Just when I think I couldn’t love the Light in the Dark series any more, Dark Hearts came along and proved me wrong. Micalea Smeltzer delivers something broken, raw and undeniably genuine with Jace and Nova’s story. Their journey is hesitant, unexpected and hits readers with all of the sassy sweetness and delicious sizzle I’ve come to love from this talented author. Jace and Nova are made for heartache and yet they create something real and untouchable together. I absolutely adored their deep friendship, easy banter and sparkling chemistry. Their insecurities and shared stubbornness led to a push a pull that was utterly addictive. Even beneath the obvious chemistry, something more significant built between Jace and Nova. It was this promising, inexplicable quality that had me so intrigued by this couple and kept me riveted to their story.

Jace was nothing like I expected. While he certainly had his own personality in the previous books, Micalea Smeltzer completely unraveled this character in Dark Hearts. I absolutely loved seeing Jace in his element as he wrote and performed his music. Paired with his possessive and protective behavior towards Nova and his surprisingly easygoing nature when it came to his friends, I was completely smitten. Micalea Smeltzer did a fantastic job at exploring Jace’s family life, his past and what made him so resistant to a relationship. I loved how effortlessly Nova seemed to break through his walls. Together they grew confident in both their relationship and in who they were as individuals. I loved seeing Jace set in contrast to Cade and Xander. While he definitely seemed to fit within the group, his quirks, personality and distinctive voice made him every bit the individual.

Nova was Jace’s perfect match in every way. For all of his delicious angst and broody behavior, she appeared mysterious and somewhat emotionally detached. However, this couple seemed to ignite something deep within one another that burned hot and quickly spread, engulfing every other aspect of their lives in its fiery grasp until they were both burning brightly. Nova gave as good as she got and the resultant banter was adorable, entertaining, and laced with sexual tension. Just like Jace, Nova had her own demons to deal with in this book and Micalea Smeltzer had some big surprises in store when it came to her history and personal heartbreak. Although I guessed pretty early on what Nova’s secret was, I still enjoyed watching as her past resurfaced and took both her and Jace on an emotional rollercoaster.

Dark Hearts was well paced, exquisitely written and overflowing with emotion. Each addition to this series stands on its own but it also fits within the emotional context of the series as a whole and Dark Hearts was certainly no exception. Micalea Smeltzer expertly rekindles the feeling of family that makes this series so spectacular. We get to see the whole crazy crew together a lot in this novel and it made my heart incredibly happy. Their good-natured teasing, genuine concern, total acceptance and unconditional love for one another was absolutely breathtaking and I’m always a little sad to see it come to an end with the final page of the book. Jace, Nova and the rest of Micalea Smeltzer’s inimitable characters will be back as the series continues but until then, I’ll be holding onto Dark Hearts and all of the things it made me feel.

Dark Hearts is book #3 in Light in the Dark series.
Other books:
1. Rae of Sunshine: review
2. When Stars Collide: review.

NOTE: Books should be read in order because characters and stories are connected!

I have to say, this story is my favorite story of Micalea's so far. I liked her Willow Creek series and When Stars Collide but this book is something else.

The storyline continues with Xander and Thea's wedding. Both Jacen and Novalee are dark, broody and secretive so it's not a big surprise that they live together, but are hiding that from their friends who are known to be noisy. The duo clicked it off from the first time they met in Rae of Sunshine. There was always chemistry between them, but more than that there was a mutual understanding that gave birth to this amazing friendship that's stronger than their individual friendships (Nova's with Rae and Thea, Jace's with Xander and Cade) and so the chemistry was put aside. But, you can only surpass some feelings for so long before they overflow you and that's exactly what happens.

I could tell you so much more about this story, but I'm not going to do it because I could spoil it for you.

It was amazing to watch those two people, who are so anti-love actually fall in love. With each other!

"No-it's just that love makes you weak. Look at them. They are willingly handed their hearts to the other person, giving them permission to break it at any time." - Jace ...
"I believed that once, but in my experience, it's not true. Love doesn't conquer everything,
it destroys you instead." - Nova

What I loved the best about the story is friendship, love and caring those two share for each other. The understanding. The passion. I loved how Jace can be possessive (not overly so) and how Nova doesn't let him be a jerk towards her.

"Dance with me?"
"You dance?" I eye him...
"I have sex. Dancing is practically the same thing. Just with your clothes on.
(With those two it is, lol)

I loved and found really heartbreaking their pasts. Especially Nova's. I could actually feel her pain and yearning.

"Night," he muses, a slight smile tugging at his lips, "the dark and misunderstood beast. People are afraid of the dark, but not the light - but it's the light they should fear. The light is where the real monsters are."
He's right. The real monsters are right in front of us, and we never even notice it. They slip by unnoticed, masquerading as normal people, but they can't mask their true colors for long.

Yep, Jace, Nova, and Dark Hearts are definitely my favorite! Can't wait for Broken Hearts to come out to see what will happen with them later!

They say they don't know us.
But they don't understand.
No one understands.
But I've figured it out.
We've got dark hearts, dark hearts,
and our demons won't let us go.
Just tell me how I get out of this suffering.
Just tell me how I forget this pain and be happy.
And the pain is pulling me under,
maybe I should give them names.
Tell me,
can my dark hearts ever go away?

I've been not so patiently waiting for this book ever since Micalea announced that she was going to give Nova and Jace a book of their own. These two characters have had me curious to know more about them since they got introduced in Rae of Sunshine which you don't have to read before this one, but I highly recommend!! This book was everything and more!! It was emotional and angsty and passionate and humorous and you couldn't help but to fall in love with these two amazing characters and the story that they tell. The ways in which Nova and Jace grew and changed one another just amazes me and has me falling in love with them even more. And let's talk about that gorgeous cover!! The cover models match Jace & Nova perfectly.
Jace and Nova are both running from and trying to hide from their pasts. They are proof that like and like attract just as much if not more than opposites. No one really knows Nova, not even her closest friends, but Jace sees the real her and the demons she is struggling with on a daily basis, but he's not afraid because he is just like Nova. However, you can never completely run and hide from your past because it always comes back to find you and change everything.
Jace and Nova are my favorite characters that the author has ever written. They have chemistry and such a strong attraction to one another, not just as lovers but they are best friends as well. I loved the connection between these two and how their friendship grew into something much much more. Jace is cocky, broody, and uber mysterious and you can't help but to fall in love with him and want to peel back all the different layers to him. Nova is sassy, smart, and spirited and the perfect fit for someone like Jace. They have both built up walls around their hearts and vowed to never fall in love but you can't choose who you fall in love with and when love knocks on their dark it is impossible to turn it away.
This is a story about love in it's purest form; A story of struggles, loneliness, friendship, love, and ultimately, healing. Dark Hearts will have you captivated and turning the pages till you are all finished and left wanting more which lucky for us Jace & Nova will be getting a second book!!! I can't wait for more from the author!

An unexpected quiet intensity that sinks deep into your soul and touches your heart. Dark Hearts is about two characters that find solace and acceptance in one another after being shattered by the hands life has dealt with them. Both hiding from the world by fading into the shadows and running from the past. Dark Hearts is the third novel in the Light in the Dark Series and holds the darkest stories but shines the brightest out of the three.

“I see you. I always have.”

Page after page, the intense and passionate words Micalea Smeltzer wrote made me fall deeper in love with Jace and Nova’s story. Honestly, this is the best writing I’ve seen from Micalea and it’s also the best novel of the series. After the countless books I’ve read, I’ve found that my favorite novels are the ones that hold damaged and broken characters for two reasons. One, because those books are filled with heart stopping and breathtaking angst and a slow burning passion. Two, because the backstories of the main characters are the most interesting, raw, and real. Dark Hearts holds both of these qualities and has quickly jumped to my one of my must reads of 2017.

We originally met Jace and Nova in Rae of Sunshine, Cade and Rae’s story, and from the moment they were introduced they immediately grabbed the readers attention, well mine anyway, and immediately grabbed each other’s attention. The chemistry between the two, in Dark Hearts, is undeniable and it was only a matter of time before their slow burning romance was going to combust. That Polaroid scene was one of the most affectionate, moving, caring, and all-consuming scenes I’ve ever read. I get chills just thinking about it. You’ll know when you get there. Trust me.

If you haven’t already, One Click this truly original and heart-warming novel. It completely entrances you. Making the world fall away with nothing but Jace, Nova and their quiet, intense, and hilarious bubble.

p.s. check out the AMAZING book trailer for Dark Hearts!

Nova and Jace the leading characters of Dark Hearts by Micalea Smeltzer were an interesting couple. It was my first book my this author and at first I had a little problem in connecting to the characters but once I managed to find a connection I really liked the way they were written.

I really loved how they were always in plain sight and nobody had a clue. So it is no wonder that also had a hard time seeing what was right in front of them. The author is really skilled in leading the reader through this developing relationship. I always felt like I was right there with the characters.

Actually it is funny how well two people can know each other without really knowing each other – yeah sorry I know cryptic much. But even though the secrets they both kept were hurtful they both were strong . Bend yes – but never broken.

Kind of strange – and one reason for the “only” 4 stars is the way the “parents” issue in the story was handled. For all the attention the author paid to the leading characters relationship I think there are some details missing there – at least for me. And it felt that the parts that were included only served one purpose and that was a little to obvious for my taste.

But in total this is a solid and well written romance that I can only recommend. I did not read the other books of that series yet so I could quite follow all the details on secondary characters but that was OK the book is readable as a standalone.

Best one yet! ❤ I freaking love Jace!
I am a fairly new fan of Ms. Smeltzer's writing but I am already so wrapped up in her characters I can't wait for more after each book. In this series you have had little peaks at Jace and Nova during their encounters with some of the main characters in her first two books and I was very curious about Nova from the beginning. For me I didn't really get to know much about Jace in the other books but I quickly became glued to finding out more.

Jace and Nova had this friendship between a guy and a girl that most people believe that never exists because they always get involved and ruin things, but when things have already been as bad as they can get, what would stop you? I am an honest to goodness fan of Novalee!! For different reasons I have wanted to dye my hair so many different colors and to read about Nova and the discovery about her past shocked me to tears. (I am a big fan of purple hair and always will be a fan!)

At the beginning of this book I had many theories about how things would play out, because I am a guesser and can't help myself before I dive into a book, but when I barely made it half way through I had no idea what would happen with this group of friends and their futures. I absolutely love that about Micalea's writing style and imagination into her characters. Jace was this sexy singer who made me fall in love with him, while also being completely wrapped up in everything Novalee! I was a little disappointed on how it ended but overall I loved it! These two and this book has been my favorite Micalea Smeltzer read so far and my level of fandom is growing by the book!

Two dark souls that learn to love through the darkest of secrets. Jacen aka Jace is this dark souled loner that has secrets that he doesn't share with the circle of friends that he has joined. He appears to be keeping to himself but then he lets Novalee aka Nova move in with him and they strike up a friendship. Nova also has dark secrets that cause her to be standoffish to their circle of friends. Through living with Jace and finding herself, Nova starts to find peace when it comes to her secrets. Their journey together is beautiful and heartbreaking. This book is a standalone but part of a series. After reading this one I really want to go back and read the first two books to learn more about the other friends that make appearances in Jace and Nova's story.

Novalee aka Nova moves in with Jacen aka Jace the two start off as friends, but the two have dark secrets, so maybe that's why they are so drawn to each other because their connection is undeniable because they can beyond themselves. They both belong to a group of friends and they both manage to keep their secrets from them too.

Together they find that if you maybe trust and love someone enough you might be able to share your secrets, it sets you free from your Dark Hearts. Both are trying to move forward and really want to do it together in finding their HEA.

This is the third book in a series of standalones and I must go read book one and two as this was my first book by this author. Who has managed to put many emotions and angst into one book, so I can't wait to read the rest.

I received this book in return for my honest opinion.

Jace is a cocky man, "...my eyes flicker to his hard ***k. “It won’t bite,” he says with a slight grin. “But I might.” I loved when Jace put his heart on his sleeve, "he nods, swallowing thickly. “I couldn’t eff someone else when the only person I wanted was you.” Jace is one of those people where you ask a question you get an honest answer, “what the eff?” His head whips up so fast from his journal that I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t have whiplash. “Are you wearing pink? I didn’t even know you owned something pink.” I loved this book, Jace was sexy amd sweet.

From the moment we were introduced to each other it’s like some part of me woke up and said, “Hello, I know you.”

“Jace is like a car speeding down the road headed straight for me and I can’t move out of the way fast enough. I don’t know if I want to move. Maybe I just want to end it all–or maybe it’s not the end, and the beginning instead.”

“We’re just two broken people trying to piece ourselves together, but maybe with each other’s help we can make something beautiful out of our messes.”

“There is a reason I chose the title Moments for my project. It’s moments like this, ones where we’re so close to loosing our minds, that time slows down the most. Where his finger on my lip and my nails in his back adds up to a much larger picture. Each moment is precious in its own right, but you put them together and it’s magic.”

No one has a way with words quite like Micalea Smeltzer. Her books are the kind that you just want to clear your day for. You want to forget all of your plans and just get lost in the story that she has created.

Dark Hearts is the third book in the Light in the Dark series and is one of those books that just grabs onto you from page one. From the moment you start reading, you are hooked. I connected with Jace and Nova instantly. I loved how easy things were between the two of them and just how wonderfully their friendship flowed. The two of them were both broken characters, hurt by their pasts and afraid to let someone in and love them. They just worked so well together and had the most amazing chemistry together. Between their entertaining banter and the pull between the two of them, I just honestly couldn’t get enough. I found myself hoping and praying, rooting that they would give in to what they were feeling. I just knew if they gave it a chance, what they had, would be truly amazing.

Now, the road to HEA for Jace and Nova was not an easy one. They both had to deal with feelings and emotions that they weren’t used to. Feelings that they weren’t sure how to handle and learning how to work through them. They had a lot of obstacles along the way, and some truths/secrets to work through. But, like any great love story, the journey and the fight are incredibly worth it. And I loved every single moment of Jace and Nova’s journey.

Dark Hearts was an amazing read, from beginning to end. Dark Hearts is a beautiful friends to lovers romance. The characters and story-line will capture your heart and leave you begging for more. This story is filled with heartbreaking and intense moments as well as fun and sexy ones. Jace and Nova’s story is beautiful and their love is completely unforgettable.

"I want to be graceful even when everything is falling apart. I want to be strong enough to not crumble when things get rough."

Confession.... this book was adorably beautiful, touching and deeply romantic with steamy scenes thrown in for good measure.

The quick sweeping romance that overtakes Jace and Nova is everything you wish for. You need someone in your life that changes your perspective on the outlook of the world.

Nova was born and raised in Texas. Growing up with a hardass for a dad who was very involved in the church made for a horrible life. When the worst happens, her family force her into a situation she disagrees with. Turning her back on her family she decides out of state for college is her best option. Colorado is where she goes.

Jace lived in Colorado all his life. At a younger age he lost his mom to a terminal disease leaving him to live his life with his father. A father who only cares about climbing the Government latter. Which leaves no time for Jace. When the time is right Jace leaves to his own place and gets a job at a bar. And good ole dad is just thrilled. (Sarcasm my friends)

Jace needing a roommate, Nova decides to move in. But secretly move in. Their friends will look into this as something when it is nothing.... for right now.

Things go from weird to complicated when Jace and Nova take things to another level. They start hooking up and things escalate quickly. Feelings are shared and the dreaded L word is spread. Things couldn't get any more complicated! Can they!!?

They both bare hidden secrets and they would like to keep it that way until its time. But secrets have a way of coming to the surface in a relationship and Novas is quite a shock.

Baring truths and their souls to one another, can love be enough when secrets change everything? When lies were shared to protect secrets!?

Can we all agree that Jace was annoying? Like Jace being a macho, controlling, know it all jealous boyfriend annoying!? I might be screaming this right now..... God forbid she have male friends or even look in the direction of another species. He would flip. Guess what Jace, women can do what they want!! If she wants friends then friends she will have. No one needs your approval. Ugh! Men! Yuck!!

Besides the Jace situation, this book was pretty fantastic. Nova was instantly adored and her friends were super sweet. It makes you want to read their stories in the other books and continue on. I honestly believe that Nova carried this story from beginning to end. And her shocking twist made you love her even more. And yes I was shocked. Yeah, me! (Points at self) Yup!!

And a word of advice.. Please don't ever reference Twenty One Pilots! What a way to to turn you off from a higher rating!!

This story started out as a sweet romance that made me feel good. There was always an hint of intrigue to it. A little over midway through the story things didn't appear to be like I thought they would be. Then BAM!!!!! The twist of all twists was sprung on me. I never saw this one coming at all. I was blinded sided, speechless. This 5 star story took me by surprise.

Jace and Nova are roommates and have become fast friends. They are fighting their attraction for one and other until they can't anymore. They are trying to hide a past that left them with none other than Dark Hearts.

I truly enjoyed this story that made me feel a whirlwind of emotions. I was sucked in so deep in the heart of this story, spun at tornado speed and was left reeling at the end. I spent the third part of the story in tears either from heartbreak or joy. I love it when I get blindsided , I hate to predict the end. Beautifully written with a storyline that flowed well. I've read all of this author's wonderful stories so far, but this is one of my personal favourites. If a story can make me shed a few tears, they deserve all the stars in the sky.

I just loved Jace and Nova so much, they were created to perfection. A foul mouthed, dirty minded mixed with a multi coloured hair. They made things quite interesting and very entertaining to say the least. OMG!!! Did they made sparks fly or what.

This is the third book in the Light In The Dark series. I think it's safe to say it can be read as a standalone. The characters from the 2 previous books are present in this one but the author wrote it in a way to make the readers catch up. They play a part but the story is centred on Nova and Jace. Told in an alternative POV. I strongly recommend this story.

I Was Provided A ARC By The Author
(Possible Spoilers)

Nova Clarke is a bit of a mystery. She hides from a past. She only lets her friends see what she wants them to see. Hiding behind her camera and her ever changing hair color. The exception is Jace, her best friend. He see's more than their other friends do. She lets him get close, but not to close. He may already see her more than she wants. But she has a deeper connection with him. They are similar. They each hold secrets, pain, heartbreak, and put up walls. But when they are together those walls slowly crumble. Lately Nova finds the feelings she holds for Jace growing stronger. But she fears if they act on the attraction between them it could ruin their friendship and that friendship means the world to her.

Jace Kensington ran from a life he hated. He distanced himself as much as possible. Bartending, writing music, smoking and covered in tattoo's, furthers himself even more from that past. And the muse of his music, Nova Clarke, his best friend, a girl who has his heart, but he doesn't know it yet. Jace does not believe in relationships, or getting to close. But with Nova, he finds himself thinking about, love, commitment. He see's something in Nova, just as she see's something in him. They are no two people more perfect for each other. But will their past, overshadow them being together before they can even really give it a chance?

Two beautifully broken people who souls call to one another. Dark hearts is the kind of story that captures your attention from page one. It is a fantastic story of love, pain, second chances, and friends who are more like family. It is for sure my favorite in the series.

Nova & Jace are everything. Together these two are explosive. Beautiful, and oh so sexy. Their banter, the sweet moments woven between the swoon-worthy sexy times, will give you butterfly's.

One thing about books in a series is that you get to know characters before their story is told. But one of the best things is that previous character stories continue. We still get lots of Cade, Rae, Xander and Thea, which is awesome. But the true story of Jace and Nova's tale is remarkable. I couldn't love them more now than if I tried.

Both of them have horrendous childhoods that make them what they are today, but because of that they know each other better than anyone else does. So falling in love with YOUR person just means that much more.

“I can see her sadness in the dark, and I can hear her demons calling my name. I can hear her cries from miles away, and I can see her frown when no one is watching.”

“She thinks she's got it all figured out, but she’s putting on that damn mask again. Oh, she's a Supernova, Supernova, she's a Supernova, Supernova. It's what she is.”

Nova is as loner, so the fact that she has great friendships with Rae and Thea is a blessing. She keeps to herself as much as she can, but the one true person she can be her lonesome self with is Jace. He makes her a better person, as it should be.

Jace had a volatile relationship with his father, only being there in his life as a pawn to make his dad seem like he was a better person. So being resentful of his father is understandable, but it still makes him dark in places no one else sees. Other than Nova.

Their love was a fight from the beginning, as they weren't sure how to go about being together, but with secrets and dark stories left untold it made it hard to really give into one another. This is their story to tell, and it's so worth the read. I voluntarily read and ARC of this book, and I'm so lucky to be able to share my review with you now. It's so worth it. 5 stars is simply not enough.

If you have never read a book by this Micalea Smeltzer chick, you are missing out my friends. This is my second from Smeltzer and it has solidified her place in my automatic purchase author list. The way this woman writes her characters is brilliant. They are flawed, dealing with harsh realities, but the drama and angst is something you feel without being overwhelmed. I am picky about my angst but this way of writing and communicating frustrations is the epitome of what readers want. Nova and Jace are brilliant. These two were hand carved for one another. They are broken with rough edges but when you put them together, they are missing puzzle pieces that clicks into place and the world makes sense.

Emotional. Healing. Humor. Hurt. Anguish. Hope. Each of these words is a vital part of this story. The more you learn about Nova and Jace, the more you love them. You mourn with them and cheer them to a hopeful and brighter ending. I loved that this book is constantly in motion. They are moving from one reality to a new unknown, learning to love with abandon and be in a relationship that is healthy and alive. Instead of mourning the loss of a family that never truly cared, these two have created a new "family," one filled with people who support, cherish, and make them laugh. This camaraderie creates a space for these two to heal. I loved the journey of Nova and Jace, a story that is as passionate as it is heartbreaking. When your soul has been dead for so long, and you find something that brings it to life, these two learn to hold on tight and create a bond that cannot be broken.

I WANT MORE! I cannot get enough of these people and I am beyond ready for more of the gang in the Light in the Dark series!

Boy, how long have I waited for this book!

"Dark hearts" is another amazing book by Micalea Smeltzer and by far my favourite from the Light in the Dark series.
I really enjoyed the way the story was unfolding and all the emotions in it.
What I will always remember about this book will be the confessions tradion that the main characters had going on, so damn cute!

quote

About Jace:
Without doubt, Jace was everything I wanted him to be, I loved how protective he was when it came to Nova and the way he interacted with his friends. Micalea Smeltzer did an amazing job at describing his past and its effect on his view on relationships.

About Nova:
Just like Jace, Nova had her own demons from the past to deal with in the story.
Her past created an emotional rollercoaster, not only for the main characters, but for the readers too. I loved how effortlessly Nova could break down Jace's walls.

About Jace & Nova:
I loved the fact that they had such deep friendship and at the same time that kind of off-charts chemistry.
The way these two are bild makes you to not want to put the book down until you reach the end.
Few times I've even found myself trying to read the book more slowly, because I didn't want it to end!

"Dark hearts" is one of these remarkable books that stick with you for a long time after you finish them.
If you love a story with great friendship and intiguing characters, then this is the book for you!
At last, I highly recommend "Dark hearts" and the Light in the Dark series!

Overall Opinion: First of all, this cover is probably one of my favorite covers in romance books. I really enjoyed the little glimpses of Nova and Jace in the other books in this series, so I was excited to see what their story was about. I'm happy with the way their story went. It went from friends who were basically loners then to eventually lovers when they realized that their feelings are more than platonic. I love the moments they act like friends the most, because it feels so genuine. I think it's important to keep up the friendship part of a romantic relationship.

Nova was an interesting character. I was intrigued by the colored hair the quiet persona she always kept. I was surprised when her backstory was revealed. Jace was similar to Nova, as in they kept their feelings in check and only let certain people into their lives. I wish we got more of why Jace is the way he is only because he had such strong emotions regarding his life growing up. I loved seeing the rest of the gang in the series, and how they interacted with each other. The only reason why this is not a 5 star read is that I felt like the relationship with Nova and Jace was almost too physical and not enough moments simply exploring their relationship. The ending also felt a little rushed. I know there is a second book in their storyline, so maybe this will be explored more.
Recommend: I would definitely recommend this series to people that love interconnected contemporary romance stories. Can't wait to read the last 2 in the series. A 4.5/5 stars book.

I’ve been itching for Jace and Nova’s story since Rae of Sunshine. I just knew that it would be great and I’m happy to say that I wasn’t disappointed. These two were just fascinating to read. Both Jace and Nova were mysterious in the previous books. You just knew there was so much more to each of them then they were letting on. In Dark Hearts, they are front and center and really get to your heart.

Jace and Nova clicked together instantly. They felt the other was one and the same and because of their instant connection, they had an awesome friendship. I really enjoyed their banter and their interactions. Not only did they have that connection, they also had an explosive chemistry. When these two get together, whew it was intense. But what I really loved about this book was how Micalea showed the truth depth of both Jace and Nova. I loved seeing their true colors come out and see the changes from beginning of the book to the end. Their true nature is what made this book for me. I also enjoyed seeing Cade & Rae as well as Xander & Thea. This group of friends are such a dynamic. Whenever they were all together, it was always a good time. Their friendship was awesome.

I loved everything about Dark Hearts-the characters, the storyline, and the writing were fantastic. I was hooked from the first chapter and couldn’t wait to see how the story would go. I really couldn’t get enough of these characters. I am excited for more in this series.

Dark Hearts was so good! We have Nova and Jace's story!!! And they do not disappoint. Dark Hearts starts off dark with secrets right from the start. But you catch one of Nova's secrets right off the bat...Jace! Her best friend/roommate. They both have a circle of friends they stay within. But these two are pulled together. They are broken and their souls seem a little lost. They are unique and never allow anyone get too close, unless it is each other.

Both come from broken families. They had only themselves to survive. And now they have each other. They finally give in to their needs, and BOOM! Fireworks explode as I knew they would. But you know when two wrongs can make a right, sometimes the bad does not completely let you go? That happens a lot. Life kind of sucks for these two. It's all about what other's wanted for them, not what they truly needed. Together they find that they are not weak, they are strong.

When Nova's huge secret comes out, Jace is besides himself. I literally saw both hearts break more than they were to begin with. I cried with Nova, but I had faith for these two. And I know these two will find a way back to each other. Can these two fix what has always been broken? They have a huge support system from their circle of friends. I am loving them all and you will too! Way to go Micalea!! I am a fan for life! Book readers, get your copy. You need these people in your life!

I loved Rae and Cade's story (Rae of Sunshine), adored Thea and Xander's (When Stars Collide), but I absolutely felt as if I was experiencing every moment of Novalee and Jace's (Dark Hearts) firsthand.

Dark Hearts by Micalea Smeltzer is perhaps the best story in the Light in the Dark series and that is saying something because anything written by this amazing women will leave you craving more. When I first read Rae of Sunshine on the day it was released back in November of 2014 I had no clue it was going to be part of a series, but I was super ecstatic to discover there were more to come!

I instantly connected with Nova and Jace's story because I have been invested in these characters since the very beginning and watched as their feelings for each other developed throughout the first two books. They both have faced their fair share of horrors and have fought to be where they are today so it's no surprise that their story would be titled something like Dark Hearts.

Nova and Jace's story is so beautifully written and something that you should experience first hand so I will just say that I STRONGLY recommend picking up your copy today!

Dark Hears by Micalea Smeltzer is the third book in the Light in the Dark Series and this one may just be my favorite so far. Jace has been a character in the previous books that has intrigued me but that the reader doesn't know much about which makes him all the more mysterious and sexy. I was excited to see that this book was his story with Nova.

Jace and Nova have a friendship that the rest of the group is well aware of but they don't know how close these two actually are, and that fact is something that Nova and Jace keep hidden. Jace is your typical playboy, not wanting commitment, thinking that he isn't capable of it. Nova has been hurt in the past and she doesn't want to look for love.

Nova with her crazy ever changing hair color and Jace with his books and nerd glasses are not the people that they portray to the outside world, and as the reader dives into this book, you find out just how deep these characters are and what makes them truly tick.

This book was a fantastic read that intrigued me from the very beginning to the last page, causing me to laugh out loud on more than one occasion. I would definitely recommend one-clicking it. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
