Oh. My. Tox!!

Crown of Souls, book 2 in the Tox files, is even better than Conspiracy of Silence. The opening completely hooked me! Seriously, Ms. Kendig is the queen of killer openings!

I was riveted and happily jumped back into the world of Tox and his crew. Cell was back with his sarcastic humor. Thor with his mighty glower. Ram and all his mystery. Maangi with his stealth.
And Haven. The romance between Russell and Haven had its ups and downs. Y'all, I can't even. I wish I could lay it all out there but no one like spoilers. Trust me, you will be glued to their story. I mean glued! I'm sure I came undone a few times as my heart jumped in my throat and my eyes devoured every word in front of me.

All I can say is bring on Thirst of Steel.

This book is perfect for those who love Tom Clancey or Dan Brown style books but with a spiritual thread and a romance. The action is tense, the writing sharp, and I inhaled this novel. It follows closely on the heels of Conspiracy of Silence and the action launches from the very first page. You could read this without the prior book, but it may make more sense if you read them in order. I am already anticipating the next volume of the Tox Files.

This book is everything!!! I absolutely loved the whole thing! Digging deep into the heart of Tox and the way he views himself was an intense journey and I loved the way Ronie handles Tox and Haven's relationship. Life isn't always perfect but it's worth the effort! The book felt very Captain America and Bucky Barnes meets Indiana Jones! Just fantastic!! I laughed, I panicked, I sighed with happiness, I cheered. Book 3 can't come soon enough!!

Wow! Edge of your seat. A rush against time to stop a former soldier who is on a path of destruction. Cole "Tox" Russell and his team are brought into this mission by a madman, a former team member of his. There is a Crown of Souls that is being used to annihilate people and they must stop it before it's too late. This story goes from one Biblical historical site to another with archeological artifacts thrown in and Biblical history. If you like military and Indiana Jones type stories, this is for you. Absolutely loved it.

Once again, I was drawn into the intense world of Tox and his team as they race to try and get ahead of the devastation being wrought by a powerful crown in the wrong hands. There are many facets to the story that weave together and enhance its complexity, including flashbacks to ancient times when we see the crown in use in another dangerous era. Tox and Haven's relationship is still new and is tested when they once again work together under extraordinary pressure and circumstances. I loved the way they look to each other for emotional support despite the tension that often arises between them. I missed Chiji in this book but felt like Haven stepped up in his absence to balance out Tox's thoughts when they get dark. Some of the deeper themes of the book are addressed in Tox's wrestle with where the line is between justice, vengeance, and evil. We got to know Ram a little better, as well as Ram's sister Tzi who has some drama of her own going on (which I hope we get to the bottom of in the next book!) There is a quick pace to the book and just when things seem like they take a pause, the plot ramps up again even more. I can totally see this book playing out as a fantastic action movie with just the right amount of romance. I'm not going to give away any details, but know that this is a book that keeps the reader enthralled and turning the pages!

Buckle up butter cup because Tox has returned and he ain't holding back.

Cole "Tox" Russell and his team are home and enjoying a new "normal" when their lives are thrust into yet another mission--and this one's personal. An ancient crown that carries a lethal legend; imminent danger to those Tox loves; and a past that won't let him believe there's hope. Reading this story is like watching an epic Indiana Jones adventure... on steroids.

What I love about Ms. Kendig's writing is her ability to make the words come alive on every page. There wasn't a second when I didn't feel like I was living and breathing these character's lives with them. I enjoyed getting to the guts of Tox's personality and discover what drives him and what scares him. The tension those revelations bring to his relationship with Haven and his team felt authentic and believable. The undercurrent of theme rang true to both the plot and characters and added a richness to the story I appreciated.

While the atmosphere within these pages is intense, Ms. Kendig's ability to masterfully create dimensional characters allow them to escort readers through the emotional highs and lows of a plot that does not quit. The historical and mythical content of the storyline was riveting and I couldn't turn the pages quick enough.

Ms. Kendig's Rapid-Fire Fiction never fails to satisfy readers looking for high-caliber fiction but Crown of Souls kicks epic story-telling to a thrilling level that will not disappoint!

In my opinion, Crown of Souls is Ronie Kendig’s best novel so far. And I love all of her novels! But this book is just a cut above.

Crown of Souls is non-stop tension from every side – from relationships, high-stakes suspense, spiritual battles, and a race against madness. In addition to the spot-on tactical action, this series has a delightful Dan Brown/Indiana Jones feel that keeps you completely captivated. In fact, Kendig nods at everyone’s favorite archaeologist from time to time on the pages of Crown of Souls.

On top of all this greatness, there is even more to love. Like, the solidifying romance between Tox and Haven. Like, Tox’s continued spiritual journey. Like, the great banter between the teammates. Like, a surprise character that hearkens back to Kendig’s Nightshade/Discarded Heroes series. Like, a cameo appearance from my fave forensic artist. And other little touches spread throughout that elevate this novel from great to fabulous!

Bottom Line: Oh my goodness. Seriously you guys. I’m soo twitterpated over this book. It’s perfection. Every word, every scene, every character well placed and dimensional, hitting you in all the feels before all is said and done. It’s movie material. In fact, I could see it playing out in my head as I read, so caught up in it that I legitimately got teary at the epilogue because it was so poignantly written. But also because, even though the main plot ties up nicely during Crown of Souls, the epilogue sets up the next book Thirst of Steel to be epic! This is Ronie Kendig at her best!

The complexity and depth of this novel takes my breath away! Crown of Souls is packed with intense danger, roiling with romantic tension, and tempered by the possibility that Cole may not be able to separate himself from the one wreaking havoc throughout the world.

The Tox Files is such a great series! I love the combination of present and past in the books and the way the threats to the modern world are totally wrapped up in items connected to the ancient world. Cole Russell is one deep character. Watching him navigate danger, lead his team, struggle with his past choices, and try to keep the woman he loves safe makes for a story that is hard to stop thinking about long after the last page is turned!

Step aside, Frodo Baggins. Indiana Jones, eat your heart out! Cole 'Tox' Russell is on the job, and while he may be full of self-doubt, I'm with Haven. He's the best!

Seriously, I'm not sure what I can say about Ronie Kendig or her books that I haven't said already. Some writers are great with the high-stakes action, others are great at delving into their characters and really getting to the heart of what makes them tick, but I have never come across an author who combines the two as well as Ronie Kendig. And with Tox--no, I'll follow Haven's example and call him Cole--with Cole, the emotional stakes are as confronting as the physical stakes. Because there’s a fine line between confronting evil and becoming it. And if Alec isn’t redeemable, then neither is he.

And Haven... What a fabulous character. Intelligent, wise (yes, there’s a subtle difference), grounded, and for Cole, exactly what her name implies. I love how much we can see and feel that in this novel, and I love the tension that it creates in their relationship. It’s the best kind of tension; the kind of tension that grows the muscle of their relationship, constantly creating little tears that knit back together to make them stronger.

And that doesn’t even begin to touch on the actual plot. I wasn’t joking when I said ‘Indiana Jones eat your heart out’. And yes, this is one epic journey in order to destroy an artefact that slowly decays the moral judgment of the wearer, so I imagine that if Cole and Frodo Baggins ever met, they’d do that silent nod of acknowledgement thing that only guys who’ve confronted evil and triumphed can do.

And the dynamics in this team! The banter, the intelligence, the brotherhood, the tension. There are so many other stories there just waiting to be unearthed. Like Ram and Tzivia. And then the appearance of a surprise character that will thrill long-time fans of Kendig’s books (particularly if you’re anything like me!)

This series holds more awesomeness than one series should rightly be able to claim, but you won’t hear me complaining!

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

It took me longer than normal to get into this book. And now that I've finished this book, I know it was all set up for the story and the next one.
Like most of Kendig's books, this one has a lot of characters and takes careful reading to grasp the full story. And I enjoyed slowing down and savoring this story.
In Crown of Souls, Cole faces his demons. Both his past and what he sees of his future. As his team faces Alec and tries to solve the riddle of the Crown, he has to deal with himself and his past.
Kendig weaves together archeology, legend, ancient history, the Bible and contemporary military excursions like a master. I read the last half in one setting. This was a great sequel to Conspiracy of Silence, and I am looking forward to the conclusion!

Riveting and thrilling, Ronie Kendig delivers a truly epic adventure with Crown of Souls.

***

I eagerly awaited this book after finishing Conspiracy of Silence and I was definitely not disappointed!

I really enjoyed this second installment of the Tox Files and getting to know more about Cole “Tox” Russell. I think one of my favorite things was the fact that we got to see a bit more of the depth of his character in this book. He was already a fully-fleshed character in Conspiracy of Silence but even more so in this book you could see sides of him that he’d kept hidden in book one.

I also loved the blossoming and deepening of his relationship with Haven, whom I love. She's such a sweet and steady character and creates a perfect foil to Tox's internal turmoil. I loved that there was still a lot of tension present as well as a greater depth that can only be found in the midst of dire circumstances.

Ronie is so good at creating emotionally charged situations as well as increasing the intensity of any (and all) relationships whether that be romantic or those based on the brotherhood of the team. We see a lot of this in Crown of Souls, but in the context of an overarching plot that barely lets you breathe. It all makes for a wild and thrilling ride.

Speaking of wild and thrilling, the search for the Crown of Souls artifact is so fantastic. It was such a intriguing yet complex idea (very Indiana Jones) which made for a lot of questions asked and guesses made leading to a good bit of misdirection. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat through the whole book, just waiting for something else to happen – which it always did!

I highly recommend this book to any and all who love suspense, thrillers, military action, tension-filled romance, and excellent writing!

This is another intense, never ending action packed book in the Tox Files series. Cole "Tox" Russell continue to fight evil in the world. These books are somewhat of a dual timeline as they align with ancient events in the times of the Crusades. There is history and danger with faith and romance mixed in. Ronie Kendig is an amazing storyteller and one of my all time favorite authors. This book is exciting to the end but yet not ended. More to come. Moving to book three.

Sometimes a book is so good that I struggle to put into words just how amazing it is. Crown of Souls is just that kind of book. It took me a little bit to get my thoughts about it in order. Usually, after I finish reading a book, I immediately go write my review. But not with this one. There was so much sheer awesomeness that it took me a day to figure out what to say.

Wow! What a way to start a book! I was hooked from that very first sentence. This is a big book, but it went by lightning quick. The pace was fast and furious, never letting up. I couldn't read it fast enough. There were times when my heart was pounding furiously and I caught myself holding my breath. The action was so intense, the danger felt so real. I felt like I was right in the middle of the action. There was never a good place to stop. I didn't want to put it down. I mean, there were times I'd have to because... 'real life'... but I was never happy about it.

Crown of Souls takes a closer look at Tox and his past, the demons he's fighting, the fears he's struggling with. His old friend and teammate has him in his sights, making Tox question everything about himself. It was great reconnecting with Tox and the team for another archaeological mystery and race against time. There were so many complex layers weaved seamlessly throughout. The amount of research that must've gone into this novel... mind blowing!

Crown of Souls is another spectacular, edge of your seat, nonstop thriller from Ronie Kendig and is her finest work yet! If you haven't read the first book, run and grab yourself a copy! I can't recommend it highly enough and am very eager for book three!

What does an author with the tagline "Rapid-fire Suspense do with her next series? She ratchets up and turns that rapid fire ability on it's ever lovin' head!

Crown of Souls joins forces with its preceding novels to bring the military vibe--extremely authentic as always--and weaves a mysterious thread of the supernatural into the tale.

The cast of characters leaves you breathless and wanting more NOW, and the result? Not only does Kendig swing for the fence, she obliterates any competition for the title of "Queen of Military Thrillers".

Crown of Souls is Ronie Kendig at her most brilliant--and I should know...I've devoured everything she's published.

Well done, Kendig. Oorah!

Once again Ronie Kendig draws us into a complex world of military, history, and fantasy. The story she weaves has so many layers that all work together, building to a such a climax that you can't stop reading!

I'm continually impressed with her knowledge & use of both historical & geographical information as well as her military vocabulary & descriptions. Better than any action flick, Kendig's books play the scenes before you as you are both main character & a fly on the wall.

Tox Russell's unfolding story is so moving, especially his struggle with his past & the war within regarding his identity. Is he a monster? Is he worthy of redemption?

Heart still pounding from having just finished Crown of Souls, I'm already anxiously awaiting the next chapter of the Tox Files!

As a former soldier, I thought this was exciting, excellent, eccentric, exceptional....Anyone could tell that the author was in the service or someone close to them was. It had camaraderie and soldiers banter. But the story was the best part. Totally believable. In the vein of Indiana Jones. I suggest reading the first book though, it refers to events that happened in the first one. There was a love story, the president of the US, a terrorist attack by a friend of the lead character, a race against time to find an artifact buried in the desert for centuries, Templar Knights. Turkish kings & a half dozen countries. Vivacious. Did I mention, it's a Christian book bought at a Christian book store.

Oh my goodness! I love Tox and his fellow team members. I would love to hear a story about Ram and his background. He intrigues me with his character and his dependability. Maybe someday. As for now, I will stick to Tox who shines in the Tox Files by Ronie Kendig. When I read a Kendig novel, I know that I'm getting a novel with tons of military personnel in a war ravage war area. Kendig does a good job at creating characters who shine on the page and jump right into my heart. With her latest addition to the Tox Files, The Crown of Souls, I can't say enough good things about the plot and character.

First, with her writing, Kendig draws me into the story with the first chapter and doesn't let go. The story begs to be read and enjoyed in one setting. I feel the sand under my feet. I can see the mud built homes in the Middle East. I can feel the weight of the military equipment on Tox and his teammates as they trudge through the desert.

The characters of Haven and Tox were mentioned in the first story, Conspiracy of Silence. If you jumped into Crown of Souls before reading that book, you might want to pick up Conspiracy of Silence to understand the backstory on Haven and Tox. I really enjoyed getting to know Haven more in this book. She became more than a jittled sister of a friend. She had more depth this time around. Kendig does a great job at bringing her to life with her feelings and emotions. The only downside I had against Haven that she appeared to be the damsel-in-distress at moments in this book. The bad guy would capture her and wait for Tox to rescue her, so he could explore his growing feelings for her. As for Tox, I watched seeing his transformation from the first book. In Crown of Souls, Tox has soften a lot since the first book. He is willing to allow love into his heart and works hard at trying to protect his interest. I enjoyed him a lot more in this novel. (Not that I didn't enjoy him in the first one!)

There is romance in this one. The couple has to work at their choices and see if it what they really want. Kendig does not write a romance novel type of romance, so if you're like me and don't really like to watch a predictable romance, than this might be the romance for you. It is on the surface of Tox's mind, but it isn't the controlling force, and I don't see all this internal dialogue about Tox's emotions.

The plot has a Indiana Jones with a mystery thrown in. I really got lost in the story and had a hard time putting it down. I finished it in one day and can't wait for the next installment. There are many twists and turns that kept me glued to the page. I love the close nature of the plot to Tox and how much it could affect him if he goes toward the darkness or against it.

Overall, Crown of Souls by Ronie Kendig is an amazing feat of historical research mixed in a thrill ride of a novel. With a hero like Tox, it is hard to find another character who would go to the depths of the world to rescue someone he loves. Kendig really has outdone herself with her second installment, and I anxiously await book three.

I received a complimentary copy of Crown of Souls by Ronie Kendig from Bethany House Publishers, but the opinions stated are all my own.

I love the Indiana Jones-esque theme to these books (and the fact they they even reference him in the story)--the ancient history and supernaturally powerful artifacts make these books so different from the average military suspense. And I was most pleased to have my suspicions about a certain questionable character confirmed!

Since I love the racing around the globe and focus on the ancient historical sights, the beginning felt a little slow to me as they figure out what's going on and prepare to head out (to be fair, it's very important to the story--just not as interesting to me).

It's slow going for Tox, but he is taking more steps on the journey toward healing and faith. His struggle over his similarities to Alec, especially in light of his secrets, was poignant--as is Haven's faith in him. I wouldn't have minded a touch more on Tzivia--she seems to be treading a fine line with self-destruction. I just hope she doesn't hurt herself more in the process . . . Looking forward to book 3 and whatever supernatural adventures the team will be getting into!

Thank you Bethany House and NetGalley for providing a free e-book. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions are my own.

"It took one ten thousandth of a second . . . . . .for the bullet to rip through his shoulder."

Cole "Tox" Russell and his team of Special Forces soldiers are suddenly drawn towards the front lines of a battle they never expected to fight, when a former teammate turns rogue. Alec King is deliriously fighting a battle of his own; a deliberate, barbaric war of revenge against high level officers who allowed his men to be killed during a high-level military maneuver.

When it becomes apparent that an ancient crown lies at the epicenter of Alec's madness, Cole's Wraith team members immerse themselves in the nuances of ancient history, only to discover more questions than answers. Will Tox be forced to splay open his very heart, sacrifice classified secrets on the altar of justice, risk the love of the one whom he cannot imagine living life without; his anchor in the storm.

Predictably, Ronie Kendig has penned an unimaginable story with the sort of grace, truth, and intensity that has solidified her exceptional reputation.

Crown of Souls

by Ronie Kendig

Bethany House

Bethany House Publishers

Christian

Pub Date 05 Sep 2017

I am reviewing a copy of Crown of Souls through Bethany House Publishers and Netgalley:

Cole "Tox" Russell and his team are enjoying a little rest six months after stopping a deadly plague. But sadly that Peace is short-lived after Tony is hit by a sniper shot.

Alec King is likely the only one who has skills comparable to Tony's and he is determined to see that they get justice, he wants to make those responsible pay and he wants Tox to join him, believing they are the same type of soldier.

Fearing that his old friend is right, Tox Battles the darkness within himself as his team faces another deadly encounter with antiquity.

Once again Ronie Kendig captivates with a story and characters that come alive on the page. Leaving you with a book you just can't put down.

I give Crown of Souls five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

Oh. My. WORD!!!! This book was amazing! Ronie Kendig has done it again! I am continually amazed at the giftedness of this author! I thoroughly enjoyed each page and couldn't put it down! It gets your heart pumping with the first page and it doesn't end - even at the finish! The character development of Cole Russel (Tox) throughout the book helps you understand his struggles and as the reader you yearn for good things to come his way! One favorite line from the book is, "Men like Cole warned off most trouble. And attracted the truly aggressive ones." WOW! Describes this character perfectly! If you are looking for a great read to end your summer with - you must grab this book! It is a perfect blend of mystery, history, and military action. Be sure to also read The Warrior's Seal and Conspiracy of Silence. You won't regret it!

Jaw-dropping, heart-poundingly incredible.

In looking back at my reviews of Ronie Kendig’s books, I’m pretty sure that with each release, I’ve called it her best yet.

I don’t lie. And I’m saying it again today. Crown of Souls is her best work yet.

Kendig not only brings her signature rapid-fire action, but ties it so intricately and brilliantly with intrigue, supernatural happenings, and a tender thread of romance. To do all this takes extreme talent.

Cole “Tox” Russell fights his own demons while tracking down and trying to stop a brother-in-arms from using an ancient artifact to…well, you can read the book. And while Tox is fighting for the world, his girlfriend, Haven, is fighting for him. In the midst of all this, the secondary characters absolutely shine with fantastic one-liners, fierce loyalty, and some mystery of their own.

Tight writing, stellar pacing, and great editing make this book a must-read (and must-own-for-your-bookshelf)! This is for sure a 5-star book. Please. I beg of you. If you’ve never read any of Ronie Kendig’s work, please, please, please start. I don’t believe, for one second, that you’d be sorry.

Crown of Souls is the second novel in The Tox Files, but there is a prequel novella that starts the series off with a bang, and it’s free!

Novella: The Warrior’s Seal
Book one: Conspiracy of Silence

One more thing: that solider on the cover? Yeah. He’s a legit Special Forces veteran. And the men on the front of Ronie’s Quiet Professionals series? You guessed it. #respect

Crown of Souls is not your average bookish journey. Kendig delivers an all-out world class high stakes expedition for the reader-heart! With its soaring highs, gut-wrenching lows, and diverse band of authentic characters, this story deeply engages readers across the full spectrum of emotions!

Cole "Tox" Russell is a completely intoxicating character. History, action, romance, mystery, faith, you name it, Crown of Souls delivers! It's all there and masterfully crafted. Move over Laura Croft, Indiana Jones, and Mission Impossible, Tox simply blows the competition out of the desert!

It has been a while since I’ve read a book this good! “Crown of Souls” kept my attention all the way and I didn’t want to stop reading – and if I had to stop, I couldn’t wait to get back to it!
I love all the ingredients that make up this story; fast-paced action, special forces, secret mission, a mysterious artifact, historical facts, biblical truths, digging deep into the mind and heart of Tox who wrestles with his conscience, a Special Forces operator gone rogue, and more!
I also loved the humor and the camaraderie. And . . . oh, the suspense!
Wonderful writing by a great minded author.

This book soared over and above my expectations and I LOVED it forever. Page turning, epic character development, the most jaw-dropping, heart-racing action scenes!!

The characters are all incredible, and I loved delving deeper into their fears and dreams and demons in this book. I was so drawn into their stories and I couldn't stop rooting for them!

Speaking of couldn't stop---I couldn't stop turning the pages. The twists and turns of this plot, the villain always several steps ahead, the action and the suspense all kept me reading in every moment I had.

Crown of Souls totally met the standard book #1 had set up and continued an EPIC tale that I can't wait to finish!
