2.5 stars. This one really fell short for me, as I was in the mood for Hannon's trademark edge-of-your-seat suspense. Instead, it's very heavy on the romance part, almost to the point of being the main focus of the book: attraction plus some suspense and danger to bring them together. It felt confusing with how quickly it jumped from "Wow, you are attractive" to "bad guy POV" and back. And several times I felt that I was being specifically led to thinking certain things about characters, rather than getting the chance to form my own opinions about some of the characters' actions, if that makes sense. I also felt that some of the details of the bad guy's life went almost too far into details about his bar habits and womanizing habits, skating the edge very closely. (It does show about him climbing into bed with a one-night stand, and talks of how he wants to "go another round" with her.)
All in all, an interesting romantic read with some suspense. A specific final twist fell rather flat for me, and it was necessary to backtrack quite a bit during reading to make sense of certain actions and motivations. If I hadn't had it for review, I would quite likely not have finished even in the two weeks (!) it took me to read it.

Whoa! I don't even know where to begin. Stop-you-in-your-tracks-from-the-sheer-brilliance-of-the-plot good. I'm still reeling. Gobsmacked. Astounded. Almost speechless. Luckily my fingers can still type. :-)
Extremely clever and cunning suspense. And it's the slow build kind, where you're checking over your shoulder but not quite sure for what. We have insights from the villain's point of view that gives the reader a bit of an edge over Trish and Colin...but just a bit because it's so complicated and twisty and complusively riveting.
And the romance. Oh-la-la!!!! I was on tenterhooks of yearning all the way through. A slow burn kind of kindling with lots of lovely conversation and heart-tugging sideways glances but with a case to solve a professional distance is required...and achieved...mostly. Exquisite.
Honestly, I think this might be Irene Hannon's best.

This is book one in Hannon's new series Code of Honor. A much anticipated series.
Not at all predictable, you will be guessing and sitting on the edge of your seat trying to guess this one. It will throw you for a loop more than once.
I was very happy with the build up. I was not let down that is for sure.
I gave this book 4 stars and I can't wait for book number two in this series.

Dangerous Illusions was a fantastic read. I've been a fan of Hannon's suspense novels for years, so I don't know why it took me this long to finally read this series...but I'm glad I finally did!
This book was full of suspense and I loved trying to figure out what was really going on. The villain was crazy and I was surprised by several things that happened in this book.
All in all, an amazing read and one I definitely recommend.

I had a lot of fun reading this book. It made you think who is really the killer because there are 3 options and it will have you wondering who it is. I love the Trish who is made to think she is suffering from memory loss over the death of her family. Colin Fynn is the detective who wants to help Trish find the murder of her mother. Both are interested in each other but will they fall in love. I love both Trish and Colin. They are drawn to each other. Matt who is Trish accountant and want to be more is such an interesting character. I love a book that has you guessing who is the murderer. It will have you guessing until the end. I have never read an Irene Hannon book before and I am so glad I did so. I am looking forward to the next 2 books in this series, if its as good as this one I will be pleased. I recommend this book especially for the people who loves thrillers and want to be guessing until the end!!

Solid 3.5 stars. Ms Hannon, a Christian writer does a very good job delivering just enough scare and mystery to her plot to keep you reading. I have to admit I was a bit confused in the beginning as to what was going on but soon caught up. (Michael and Matt thing)
The suspense was delivered well but I would have loved to seen something more develop between the H/H. This might be because of the genre of the book. All and all it was a fun book to read.
I reread this book because I wasn't in a very good frame of mind when I read it the first time. I enjoyed it so much more 4 stars is a much better rating for this book. I found it to be very similar to a DH book. I'm very happy that I picked this book up again.

This book seemed to have more emphasis on the relationship between Trish and Colin then on Hannon's usual sky high suspense. Both characters were well developed, and I felt a lot of sympathy for Trish after all she had been through in just a span of two years. I also liked the fact that Colin tried to keep his private life separate from his investigation while Trish was considered a suspect. The twist on the ending was definitely a surprise and made the climax quite interesting. Basically a good read but not quite what I usually expect from Irene Hannon. I'm hoping her new release, Hidden Peril, will be up to her usual suspense level.

The Code of Honor series is going to be another winning series if Dangerous Illusions is any indication of what is to come. Irene Hannon is a master at writing Christian romantic suspense. This is a book that I didn't want to put down and I just wanted to read it straight through.
Trish Bailey is a dedicated art teacher at a school in a bad section of town because she wants those students to benefit like other those in better neighborhoods. She is living with grief after losing her husband and father in an accident in bad weather that left her mother dealing with complications of a stroke. Her parents have always had wealth and believed in giving back through a foundation that gives to various charities. Trish's mom has been working with Matt Parker, an accountant recommended by their pastor. Matt is very nice and would like to have a relationship with Trish that is more than friends but Trish feels no zing with Matt. Odd things start happening that seem to point to Trish's stress causing her to be forgetful. When a very unfortunate death happens, she is investigated by the police, led by Detective Colin Flynn. Thankfully, Colin believes in Trish's innocence but the case has to be investigated. Matt seems to take a personality change when he puts pressure on Trish to allow him more power and control of the foundation. What is going on with Matt? Can she trust him? When Trish is mugged, it appears that it is not random. There are many layers to the situation and players behind the scenes that complicate the investigation as Trish, Colin, his partner, Mac, and others work to solve the mystery. I have to say that I really tried to figure what was going on but was surprised when everything came to light. The story has a great and believable story line with well thought out and real characters. I am looking forward to hearing the stories to come, the next one about Colin's friend, Kristin. Trish is a person of strong faith that is needed to get her through everything that she has to endure. Suspense, romance and faith make for a great read!

Just when everything seems to be figured out, another surprise comes from left field and turns the story upside down. The villains in this tale are truly bad, with all of the characteristics that support their wickedness and make them sinister and believable. This allows God's power to be shown as a stark, beautiful contrast to this evil, even when it is gently portrayed. Readers will eagerly await the next book in this series.

It's been a bit since I've read an Irene Hannon suspense novel. I enjoyed the plot twists and two main characters.

Unexpected moments, suspense-filled scenes, and likeable characters make a winning combination in Irene Hannon's latest novel, "Dangerous Illusions"! Those looking for a blend of suspense and romance together will be pleased with what unfolds in this novel. The sparks certainly fly from the moment that Trish and Colin meet, and you can't help cheering on these great characters as things unfold. Some of the romantic elements were a bit beyond me, but I have no doubt that female readers in particular will be feeling all starry eyed as Colin and Trish dance ever closer to a relationship. And in regards to the suspense, I like novels that keep me guessing and Hannon definitely accomplished that here, as there were a number of reveals in the story that I didn't see coming. I especially liked that, while there is a happy ending to the story, the suspense elements aren't all neatly wrapped up in a bow, reflecting real life in that aspect. Colin's role in law enforcement felt authentically portrayed, and I appreciater that even though he is certainly heroic, it is clear that it takes a team to fight a crime and he isn't just a one man show. Too many books try to make the suspense all about one character, and I like that Hannon doesn't do that here. Colin's friends that are introduced in this novel, while they may play a more minor role in this story, are set up nicely to star in their own novels in the series (or at least that's my best guess at where things will go from here).
"Dangerous Illusions" is a solid start to what is shaping up to be a great new series. Irene Hannon continues to be one of the best in the romantic suspense genre, and I am sure that her fans are going to love this latest offering. I award this book a strong 4 out of 5 stars.

This was a nice and fast read. Which is my personal preference for thriller types. I like the tales that Irene Hannon spins. They keep me engaged and curious. I could do without the instant attraction that her main characters inevitably have to each other. Colin was noticing Trish's lips right away when he was supposed to be investigating a crime scene. *Eye roll.* So far the two books I've read by Hannon also feature a sleazy guy with sexual desires that we get to hear a little too much about. I could definitely do without that. There was a big plot twist in this one that made the first half of the book make so much more sense once it was revealed. I didn't see it coming. I felt that we never really saw Colin come to a place of salvation. At one point he's not on talking terms with God, and the next minute he is. But that's all. Trish seemed like a strong believer so I didnt like that they were unequally yoked. Unless he has some salvation moment that I missed somehow. I liked this one, and I think I'll finish the series. Overall, a pretty forgettable storyline.

Wow! I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The narration was very good and the story kept my attention from the first page to the last.
This author did a great job of including some "gasp out loud" type moments for me when twists and turns were able to take me completely by surprise! I loved that! It doesn't happen a lot for me when reading suspense, as I read a lot of it.
I really liked the main characters and the way Detective Colin Flynn was thorough in his investigation and above board in the way he handled his interest in Trish. I'm looking forward to book two next.

Though I figured out the 'twist' fairly early on, all the little details kept me eagerly turning pages. I loved how Trish and Colin were able to keep their attraction to each other 'on hold' until things could be done properly once the case was closed. I also enjoyed meeting the 'Treehouse Gang' and eagerly anticipate reading Kristin and Rick's stories next in this series.

I love an Irene Hannon suspense. Her baddies are creepy, her suspense always intriguing and her romance stories warming.
The creepy villain had me guessing right at the end about what was going on and who Craig really was. I had different versions of options of what was going on with Craig and Matt but was surprised with the ultimate reveal.
It was fun catching up quickly with the characters from one of the previous series.
Even though the true identity of the villain was a mystery, his motivation for his action was not – though there was a surprise twist and ending which was not expected.
Looking forward to the next book in the series.

First book in the Code of Honor Series. This is Trish and Colin’s story. Irene Hannon is superb at writing Romantic Suspense. I very much enjoyed this book and I can highly recommend it to you. Just a warning however, once you read this one you will want the whole series.

I knew I was going to love this book. It's written by IRENE HANNON, after all! I love her suspense books almost as much as I adore her contemporary novels, so each of her books go immediately on my must-read list. Dangerous Illusions certainly did not disappoint. With suspense, romance, detective work and big twists - Dangerous Illusions is a thrilling read from start to finish.
The past two years have taken their toll on Trish Bailey, an art teacher. When her mother dies unexpectedly, Trish is thrown back into grief and headlong into a criminal investigation. Could she really have been so forgetful as to mess up her mother's medication? Detective Colin Flynn is immediately drawn to Trish Bailey - who appears a strong woman despite recent events. But he has sworn to remain impartial during the investigation and knows he will uncover the truth - whatever the cost.
The suspense in Dangerous Illusions begins with a slow burn, gradually building. There is plenty of good investigation along the way, and this also leaves room for the main characters, Trish and Colin, to get to know one another quite well before the end of the book, when the action increases pace. I enjoyed the slower pace of this novel. It was still totally engaging, but the crime is not one of high-speed chases or flashing guns. Instead good detective work is needed to uncover the hidden twists and turns of this crime.
The book concludes with a satisfying ending, even if everything didn't go quite as planned or justice was not achieved in the traditional way. The whole thing might be followed up in the next book or, equally, it could be left as it is. There were also a few other loose ends, things like the medication that got mentioned but which was never followed up, ignored, perhaps, in favour of the action.
As always with Irene Hannon's writing, I really enjoyed the romance. Colin and Trish connect from the instant they meet - despite the difficult circumstances. And there is plenty of time for them to get to know each other, both through the investigation, and also a few times outside of it. Faith is also gently woven into the storyline. Trish is a strong Christian and uses her faith to survive both the grief of the past two years and the stress of recent events. Colin believes in God but struggles with the concept of a close relationship after the events of his childhood. Together, they work through the investigation, growing closer to one another and to God.
I'm really excited that this series will follow the Treehouse Gang, Colin's tight group of childhood friends. I can't wait to read more about both Rick and Kristin. And for all the teasing they lay on Colin for his interest in Trish, I think it's only fair that they fall in love, too. It will be fun to see them interacting as a group in future books. A few characters from Hannon's previous Men of Valor and Private Justice series also make appearances in Dangerous Illusions book, which is fun for fans of those books.
Dangerous Illusions is a strong first book in an exciting new romantic suspense series. And while you're impatiently awaiting book two, there is always the next book in Hannon's Hope Harbor series with which to comfort ourselves. Can't wait!!!!

Most of this story was scrumptiously suspenseful with a pretty good romance thrown in the mix.
I was disappointed in the two or three profane words that popped up, as well as a single late expletive. There was way too much alcohol content for my taste, and it was a well-researched aspect too, as there were two or three name-brand liquors given as well as which ones were pricey. I would have liked to see less of that and a whole heap more attention given to fleshing out Craig. He was very two-dimensional for the first two hundred pages of this story. His motivation at first seemed to be simply monetary greed, then switched to solely sexual cravings (no sex shown on the page, but it was heavily implied with overtly sultry, tipping into too strange for the Christian genre type of innuendo and bar scenes).
The POVs for Matt, Trish, Colin, and Stan (given in order of appearance as a POV) were well presented, and each of these characters’ motivations were clear from page one of their specific scenes. The plot, other than Craig’s issues for the first half, was of great design with lots of surprising twists along the way. There were a couple that literally made my mouth pop open in shock. I liked that the faith thread was woven pretty organically throughout instead of just plopped into random spots just to have one, as I’ve seen with other Christian fiction books in the suspense genre. The moments of prayer and discussion about faith seemed to form naturally within the scenes and conversations, as they would naturally happen in real life.
Wish I could have granted this one more stars, but maybe the next in the series will be a little cleaner. I’m diving into it now to see.

Irene Hannon rocks, this new series is awesome, having just finished Dangerous Illusions I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
The author had me on the edge of my seat from page one until the very end. What does murder, embezzlement, stealing identities, Mafia, and did I say murder again; have to do with a young woman who has already lost a lot?
We soon realize that Trish comes from a rather well to do family, and they are big on giving back, but money can’t buy happiness, and she has lost her beloved husband, her Dad, and her Mom was severely injured, in an accident. Trish spends her days teaching and taking care of her Mother, but evil has a way of winding its hand in and that happens here, with the accountant, but things are not always as we perceive, but keep reading.
Spell bound is a good term for this page-turner, and you will be unable to put this one down. This is a Christian meeting the evil of the world, and we pray for the good to prevail. We do meet early in the book Detective Colin Flynn, and sparks fly between him and Trish.
Loved the interaction between Flynn and his long time friends, survival friends from youth on, and how they are there for one another.
This is a read that is going to linger!

"They were acting like she was a suspect".
As if her life could get any worse, Trish Bailey is grief stricken when it appears that her mother has died of an incorrect drug dosage which Trish had been responsible for administering. Following protocol, Detective Colin Flynn, must ask the lovely young widow some awkward questions while instinctively assessing whether or not she had motive or opportunity to inflict mortal harm. The man accompanying Trish upon discovery of the body, the family's accountant Matt Parker, seems to insinuate that Trish had been unusually stressed and distracted over the constant care required for her mother. Colin Flynn is not so sure.
Curiously, the case takes on a life of its own after Trish is assaulted and Matt's behavior turns uncharacteristically possessive. What began as an accidental death case swiftly morphs into an incident demanding full law enforcement scrutiny, thus stalling any personal feelings developing between Trish and the handsome detective Flynn.
"Dangerous Illusions" captures the essence of suspense with abundant subterfuge and malevolent intentions. It's Irene Hannon at her best!

In Dangerous Illusions, the first novel in the Code of Honor series, Ms. Hannon thrusts readers into the lives of Trish Bailey, a woman who is dealing with more than her fair share of grief when tragedy strikes again bringing her danger and Colin Flynn. Detective Flynn keeps a professional distance but the line gets blurry when Trish is targeted over and over again. Ms Hannon weaves a dangerous twist that gets revealed halfway through and I'm not sure if that was disappointing or relieving since I already figured it out. Regardless, the danger element doesn't diminish with the reveal and the story delivers a satisfying ending.
A romantic suspense wouldn't be complete without romance and I'm so glad Ms. Hannon used police procedure as an obstacle to Colin and Trish's relationship giving it the authenticity I sometimes find missing in this genre.
I appreciated the introduction of secondary characters who will most likely play a role in the rest of the series. Ms. Hannon does a great job giving just enough information to pique my curiosity and keep me anxious for the next book.

I have this book as a paperback, but I listened to the audiobook which I really enjoyed.
Trish Bailey had a lot to deal with when her mom dies unexpectedly. Her sorrow was palpable. Colin comes on the scene as the detective and can tell right away she has nothing to do with her mom's death, but there's still a bit of mystery around the death.
It's so crazy how all of the threads of the story are connected in the end. Trying to weed through the information the author gives us doesn't make figuring out what's going on very easy. hahahaha You can tell there's a piece of the puzzle missing, but trying to figure that out is what keeps the reader guessing.
I appreciated how Trish was able to keep hold of her faith through her loss and pain. It's a good reminder that we don't have to turn our backs on God when bad things happen, but that He's with us through it.

This story was just okay for me. The plot was interesting but I found it kind of predictable. I also felt like it was too heavy on the romance and a bit too light on the suspense.
The romance, although cute, was extremely rushed and felt very forced. I’m not a fan of romance in books so this is never an aspect that I enjoy in stories.
I did find the twist to be clever but I predicted it far before it had been revealed. The mystery didn’t have enough pizzazz for me to get invested in the story or the characters.
Overall, I found this story to be worth reading but I don’t see myself continuing with the series.

Another stellar romantic suspense from Irene Hannon, this one taking on the feel of a psychological thriller and keeping readers riveted to the page. It's extremely compelling and impossible to put down. The bad guys are very bad and Hannon doesn't shy away from this, but their actions are not glorified and provide a contrast to God's grace. More review to come...

cw // murder, being drugged, being kidnapped
This was suuuuch a good suspense book! I had gotten it a WHILE ago but somehow never read it until now, and I enjoyed it so much! I would categorize it closer to a thriller than a suspense, with significant flashes to the antagonist's point of view, which was SO interesting, and not commonly seen at all.
The characters themselves aren't particularly noteworthy: of course the protagonist is well liked, talented, well to do, and attractive, and the love interest is a law enforcement officer. They are very much attracted to each other, pretty much from the first page on, and they are constantly thinking about each other, how much they like each other, how much they want to kiss each other, and so forth. They also didn't make that fact a secret from each other, so fairly early on, they begin seeing each other frequently, texting and calling, and even start a brief stint of dating. The romance didn't necessarily detract from the story, but it was definitely very heavy.
I really liked the segments of the book told from the antagonist's point of view, though! They really added to the story, and figuring out what was happening as the story was being told (rather than waiting for the reveal at the end): the slow build made it that much more suspenseful! The whole thing was so complicated and it was so much fun to read.
The storyline was pretty much how you would expect, except they figure out who the antagonist is about 3/4 of the way through, and the latter quarter is focused on catching the antagonist.
In terms of content, I feel like this one had significantly more dark content than a standard Christian fiction suspense book: there is mention of things like murder, a one-night stand, and firing squad execution. Personally I think those things added to the story, but obviously more sensitive readers would object to it, so I thought it warranted a mention.
Overall, I really enjoyed this! It was really fun and really suspenseful, and I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series! A little too romantic for my taste, but the story was well told and I recommend it!

I’ve long been a Hannon fan, and just when I thought her last suspense series was the best, she knocked it out of the park with this first book in the Code of Honor series! Ominous from the first sentence and not letting up the further I read. She never fails to pull me into the story from the start and this is no exception! Get ready for the ride of your life because just when I thought I had untied one knot, several more were right behind it. Many twisted turns and layers unfolded before my eyes! Her characters are always top notch and plots so thick you’d need a knife to cut it with. The subtle romance brewing between Trish Bailey and Colin Flynn had me anticipating each encounter they had, waiting until the time they were free to explore their feelings. She’s smart as a whip and isn’t easily fooled when red lights start to go off in her head. Colin’s detective skills are honed when things don’t add up in the ongoing investigation & he ends up with more questions than answers. A game of cat and mouse ensues, keeping me enthralled & invested in the story. I am thoroughly hooked by a new series from one of my top favorite suspense authors! For fans of inspirational romantic suspense written by one of the best authors out there, this one’s not to be missed!

Okay, so I was a bit turned around while reading this one. The Matt-and-Michael part is a little confusing initially, but I think that's the point: to keep you guessing until Hannon is ready for you to know for sure.
I loved the inclusion of the Phoenix, Inc., team and the guest star, Mac MacGregor, from 2 other St. Louis-based Hannon series. Really enjoyed both those series and was thrilled to see them again here.
This ended up being a great Hannon suspense, and I'm so depressed that I have to wait until next fall for Kristin's story! The Treehouse Gang doesn't ride again till October 2018... ;)
