I received this book for free via Goodreads First Reads. This was over two years ago and I sincerely apologise to the author for that.
I have noted that the author hasn't released any more of this series yet. I hope she does in the future. This is a great platform to build her career on.
Trying to keep this review spoiler free means I can only really say that the blurb contains something that is very important yet there are no details of in the book. I never read blurbs before I read books so this came as a surprise after I finished the novel.
I will say that there are surprises, twists, and turns in store for a reader. The main character has a few surprises of her own and so do the supporting cast. The plot moves fast and although I never felt lost I also felt that some more exposition might have helped certain scenes.
I do want this series to continue but I also want to know more about the past events that this book glosses over. There is a lot of details that the author could delve into and explain.
I am hesitant to recommend any incomplete series to anyone else but this is worth a read. It has a lot of great ideas and hopefully these will be expanded upon in the future.
I will finish this review by apologising to the author again. It wasn't your fault that I hadn't read your words until today. They deserved to be read sooner.
Smithers can write! By the end of Ch 1, I was hooked. Nora is such a believable character, I yelled at her a few times but she didn't listen. The science fiction is scant, believable and supports the brilliant plot and characters. Smithers, hurry up with Book 2!
This Aussie, indie novel by C.E. Smithers is a fantastic first book to a science-fiction series about otherness, aliens and humanity. I'm not widely read in the sci-fi genre but I thoroughly enjoyed the fast-paced plot of The Quiet Echo.
Not only did I feel compelled to know more about the protagonist, Nora, and her otherworldly abilities, but the supporting characters and the worldbuilding were first-rate.
I'd definitely recommend The Quiet Echo to anyone looking for a modern SFF story, complete with LGBTQI+ characters and an Australian setting.
