Frank Frazetta's paintings and illustrations have set the standard for fantasy artists for the past 50 years. This collection focuses on his influence in a variety of media and genres and on his place in 20th century art history. Coedited by Hugo Award-winning editor Arnie Fenner, it includes many of Frazetta's most memorable paintings as well as revised works. The art is accompanied by the artist's own observations and commentary by a number of his contemporaries.
An incredible collection of Frazetta's most powerful creations and background information behind them. This limited edition is signed and beautifully slip-cased, a true collector's volume. Frazetta brought an atmospheric reality to the most fantastical or horrific scene. Every figure feels real, with such a sense of mass and form that they leap, crawl, slink, or reach right off the page. Even the simplest gestural sketch already has a sense of weight and place.
Frank Frazetta’s art is amazing and appropriately legendary. This book is great in that it includes much of the author’s art. But it’s far from comprehensive, and the writing feels like it comes from Frazetta’s close friends, rather than someone slightly more objective who could maybe better put the art—and the artist—in a more illuminating cultural and creative context.
There are some repeats from the book Icon but majority are published for the first time. About half the paintings are published at full page size, and many of those paintings come with accompanying preliminary rough. There are lots of work created for Tarzan, Burroughs, other book covers and even a few pages of romance comics.
Every painting comes with commentary and insight from Frazetta himself. There are also a couple of essays on Frazetta written by those who know him.
Recommended to those who like fantasy art, figure drawing and Frank Frazetta.
Frank Frazetta's prolific artwork, fantasy paintings and illustrations have set the gold standard for the past fifty years. He has been involved in a variety of media and genres, creating a golden age of fantasy art almost single handedly. He has created paintings of beasties, dinos, savage jungle cats, weird worlds, warriors and warrior women. Featured on everything from monster movie posters to book covers, my favorite has always been his fantasy and warrior women art. He is a master of his craft.
