Spoilers ahead
It's a known fact I abhor cheating (if you didn't Know now you do lol) but I always wrangle with hope that MAYBE it was a misunderstanding and he possibly slipped, hit his head and fell into a random vagina.... I mean that's the ONLY excuse I'll accept but nope Nik was running from his demons got drunk and transformed himself into the most vile creature to ever walk the earth.....a cheater
Now one is given the impression that he deeply regretted his lapse and that he really loved Jenny but see he didn't turn his shit around,he didn't get his act together......he continued to sleep with countless other women over an 8 year separation! Where's the true love in that? Where in that time was he missing Jenny? At that point not even a good grovel can save a man because he had ample opportunity to grow the hell up, reflect on his shit choices and turn his diseased ( hopefully) dick around but we're...... or really I'm to believe that this time around, THIS time he knew what true love was and he wouldn't cheat at the first stressful situation??? Seriously??? Well you know what there's a guy selling a purple Pegasus around the corner.... I might as well purchase it and ride off into the sunset!!!

Nikan Rebuilt just solidified the reason that I love this author so much. Scarlett Cole took a situation that would normally have me ready to One-Star a book and turned it into an amazing story while redeeming a character in my eyes. Nikan and Jenny's past nearly broke them but when they come into each others lives again they're able to rebuild that connection they had as teenagers.
I really liked that Jenny did not easily give in to Nikan and she made him work to get back in her good graces. It made their relationship more realistic for me and also had me loving Jenny. I can't say Nikan is my favorite character from this series but he is certainly redeemed in my eyes and someone that I cam to admire.
This book could be okay as a standalone but I would recommend reading all the books in order. Bottom line, this is a great series and it just keeps getting better and better as I read along so don't miss out on these characters.
As a side note I really really loved how she portrayed Nikan's emotions when it came to the history of First Nation people and how their past suffering can still have an effect on people today.

*** 3.5 Stars!!! ***
This 3rd installment was my least favorite of the series. Even in saying that though, I still enjoyed it; and I still fell in love with Nikan...right along with his other bandmates. I'm not a huge fan of second chance romances....especially if the past keeps coming back to haunt the couple. In this case, Nikan had cheated on Jenny years ago, and she left him. (of course!!) The thing was that it kept coming to the surface...and Nik kept having to apologize. Don't get me wrong....I hate a guy that cheats...but it was in the past, and after the tenth I'm sorry it becomes a little much.
Another issue with me during this book was that I felt both Nik and Jenny's childhood issues were glossed over. The fact that Nikan was First Nations, and that their was a ton of history about his ancestors and abuse; we didn't get to hear much except the basics. I would have liked more. There is one part in the story where he tells Jenny that he stopped drinking...but never did she ask why...or never was it explained the reason for it. I can assume why he did; but I thought it would have been brought up with an explanation. As for Jenny's past, it was heavy duty as well. Being in a cult, and watching a ton of people drink poison while your father is the leader is traumatizing alright. Again though, I felt we just got a lot of surface stuff on it, when in the other books we get way more depth.
I don't mean to make it sound like I didn't enjoy the book; because I truly did. I could really relate to Nik, seeing as he was the patriarch for his band. He's whom everyone would turn to when they needed advice, or a shoulder to cry on...etc...But in the end, his own feelings would get stuffed until one day he would just blow. That is how I have lived most of my life, so I could really empathize with his pain, and turmoil inside of himself. He eventually works through all of his issues, with the help of the love of his life.
These books all have an emotional theme to them; but are sexy also with a heartwarming romance thrown in...The family loyalty is always there as well when it comes to the band members...that just adds to the overall enjoyment of this series! I've said it in each of my reviews; but I love this series!!!

Every part of her was mentally screaming to not let Nik back into her life— except one. Her heart remembered the reason why he’d once been her world.
This book is essentially a second chance rockstar romance, but the heroine's background set it apart from many other similar stories in the subgenre. Her childhood years were spent in a cult founded by her psychotic father. A sick man who would ultimately go to prison for urging members to poison themselves-including her own mother. How do you come back from something like that? How do you go on to live a healthy and happy life after witnessing the toxic and damaging things that were a part of her every day life? Somehow she retained her spirit, her optimism, and her desire to help others. She had a warm and loving personality, despite seeing a very ugly side of the world and that's one of the things I liked most about her.
Jenny met Nik as a teen at his group home, and he became her saving grace, her first love, and eventually her ruin. Nik wasn't just the man she pinned her hopes and dreams on for her future. He and his bandmates were her only family. He was her everything, holding her fragile trust and and years worth of pain in his calloused hands. He was the one person she thought would never wound her, and in the end she realized he was the only one with the power to hurt her the most. He betrayed her when he was on the cusp of fame, causing her to disappear from his life for eight lonely years.
Time hadn't eased the regret for either of them. But unlike Jenny, who was forced to see his exploits on the cover of every gossip mag, he would give anything to have the chance to see her face again. To make amends and feel whole once more. Fame hasn't filled the emptiness that clawing at him. When he returns back to his hometown, he's at a crossroads in his life. As the oldest of the group, he's always been the self-sacrificing member. Doing whatever it took to keep his brothers happy and at peace. But at what cost? The realization that he's simply going through the motions for their benefit is a hard truth to swallow. He thought he'd be sorting through his thoughts back home, but every one of them scattered the moment he unexpectedly stood in front of Jenny. The girl he let slip through his fingers.
Jenny rebuilt her life from the ground up in their years apart. She's now a social worker, and trying to make a difference in young lives that mirrored her own at that age. She wants no part of Nik, and forgiveness isn't going to be an easy sell for him. I have to say, I respected her for that. A lot. She didn't set out to punish him, but she made him work for the privilege to be a part of her life again. She made him earn her trust and her heart, as he unequivocally needed to. Their reconnection was gradual, and an exploration of healing. It wasn't immediate, or based on lust.
“I’m building our house for us, and I don’t even know if you’ll ever move in. But like the house, we’ve had to strip back what we were to the bones of it, and now we get to decide what we want to do with that foundation.”
Normally I would have shied away from reading this because of the reason for their separation. Scarlett Cole proved that there's always an exception to the rule with Nikan Rebuilt. She made me a believer in Nik and Jenny's relationship, and the possibility of a brighter, happier future. I think if I had read their break up (and his screw up) in the present tense rather than a recollection of it happening years before, it may have been a different story. Knowing that Nik was genuinely remorseful and humble in his bid to win her back was another big plus.
Overall, this was an excellent addition to the series, and my favorite of the two I've read so far. If you're a fan of rocker romances, or second chance stories with unique elements, this could be the book for you.

I don't understand the hype with this book because I think it's terrible and disappointing from start to finish. I have a knack of choosing cheating books, I swear.
Few hours after reading one of the worst books yet, I went into this one completely blind.
Honestly I don't get why cheating is always justified and romanticized when the perp is the Hero. I've been reading for years and and not once have I ever read a book where Hero's infidelity is dealt with....sensitively.
I'm not going to swoon over Heroes who only need to buy the heroines flowers, take her out on dates and reminisce on the good ol' days before he cheated..... to get the heroine back. Like hell no. I'm always protective of my heroines.
Even the scene where he told her every single details of what happened failed to make me feel anything but anger. Especially when the heroine almost immediately tried to justified / rationalized what happened.
That's unacceptable for me. Or maybe I'm just a Scorpio who don't forgive easily.

Totally my fault for reading a book about cheating....THERE WAS BARELY ANY GROVELLING!!!😤😤😤
So I haven't read the series so I didn't know much and I was lost, IMO read the first two books...
Things I hated:
SHE WAS NEVER ANGRY, sure sad and bitter(*just a warning* I did skip some pages but I'm pretty sure I did not miss anything about her getting angry).... but literally there was no 'confrontation'. The H made a good sob fest about his cheating and she had tears in her eyes when he was telling her about it ..... BUT WAIT... she had tears in eyes because he had all this pressure from his brothers, the band etc and I'm like WTF that's the dumbest reason you could give for cheating, and she's sitting there with tears in her eyes*cue eyeroll*🙄
The author had put in some real interesting children's home stuff but because up till then then the romance sucked donkey balls, I just flipped through those pages cause I wanted to see the progression of the relationship(there was none)
- She did not make him work for it...all she did was not talk to him for two days ...😑🙄
- Where are the friends who tell the h to be careful about the H, come to think of it she didn't really have that many girlfriends...😕
Even the foster mother told her to forgive the H saying 'he was a different person then'
Umm no, this is not one of my mom's church retreats, you don't just forgive someone just like that....
I could go on...but I'm lazy so it's a 2/5 from me only because there was no ow drama when they were together.

Nikan Rebuilt is the perfect title for this story. We got to see Nikan basically stripped down and built back up.
Nikan and Jenny met when they were kids, both struggling with traumatic pasts. They’ve been through many of their first experiences together. When Nikan’s band finally gets noticed and they go on their first tour, he did the unthinkable. When Jenny finds out, she left and never looked back.
Eight years later, Jenny moves back to town and takes a temp job at the group home Nikan came from. She knew their was a chance she would run into him again but it was still a shock when he shows up at the home with one of the boys. Nikan has never been able to get over Jenny. When he sees her again, he’s determined to win her back no matter what he has to do.
This is probably one of the best grovel books I’ve read. First, let me just say that I detest cheating in romance books. I struggled with what Nikan did to Jenny. I struggled because the author did such a good job of showing the man Nikan became. How much he grew and how much he regretted what he did. And most importantly, how much he truly loves Jenny.
It’s rare for me to give a book with cheating a chance. The fact that the author could have me fall for Nikan despite it and root for him is pretty amazing. What a book I luvd it so much.
I have been dying for this book. I had so many question about Jenny and what happened between her and Nikan. Jenny seemed to have a strong bond with all the boys in the band. They had a lot of history together and hearbreak. Things weren't goin to be easy now that she was moving to where it all begin.
Nikan is a great guy and is now my favourite guy from this series. I didn't think that I would like him as much as I did. Nikan is the guy that keep the rest of the band together he's like there father figure. Yes the man that gets things sorted and if problem start with the guys he's the one to fix it. But Nikan is getting tried of all this and he has come to a point in is life that he needs to think of himself. It doesn't come easy cause he has done it for so long. The only person that has ever settled him is Jenny but he screwed up big time. Now she was back he needed to prove to her that he is a better man.
Jenny is a great woman. Life as been so hard for her and still is in some ways. But her job makes her feel good it's what she has worked so hard for. To help kids that have no one there for them. Was important to her, she has seen the woman that has looked after the boys Ellen and Maisy and wanted to be like them. She looked up them they did a great job look at the Preload guys now. So if she could do half of what they did she would be happy. The only thing coming back was she would have to face the man that time her heart into piece.
My heart broke for both these characters. They have been through so much together and separately. I understand why Jenny was the way she was. Things couldn't go back to the way they were after what happened. She needed to know if she could even be around Nikan again. But it didn't take long until the attraction was back and it was even stronger than before. But Nikan had to show her that no matter what he was goin to prove he was the man she still wanted. I was so surprise how much he showed his feelings on this. He's so caring and loving and would do anything for the people he was closest to. They meant so much to him they made him the guy he was now. I just luvd him throughout this book. The sexual chemistry between Jenny and Nikan was really hot. It was something that was always hot between them and it hasn't changed after all the time apart.
This book is my favourite from this series. Everything about it was so good. The way the author writes the book is brilliant. I could help but be sucked into the story. Like I said I was heart broken for these characters but I was dying for them to work things out. Every lil thing that happen in the book had me dying to know what was goin to happen it was so good. I can't wait for the next book after the lil teaser we got at the end. I m not goin to lie it killed me and it still goin around in my head now. I really need that book. Back to this book I would highly recommend it it's got everything that I want in a book It's just amazing.

Like I said I was heart broken for these characters but I was dying for them to work things out. Every lil thing that happen in the book had me dying to know what was goin to happen it was so good. I can't wait for the next book after the lil teaser we got at the end. I m not goin to lie it killed me and it still goin around in my head now. I really need that book. Back to this book I would highly recommend it it's got everything that I want in a book It's just amazing.

Nikan Rebuilt by Scarlett Cole is a beautifully written second chance love story and I loved it.
Nikan has never forgotten his first love, Jenny. After years apart they come face to face again and he knows this woman still owns his heart.
After Nikan had hurt Jenny, she wanted nothing to do with him, she closed herself off and concentrated on her career.
Now he's back and she knows she's in trouble. Her heart still belongs to Nikan and trying to stay away is not going to be easy.
I loved Nikan, he was honest from the beginning, he owned his mistake and was determined to show Jenny how sorry he was and that he was a changed man.
These two made me laugh, they made me swoon and they made me cry. They were perfect for each other and once Jenny let her guard down and truly let Nikan in I was one happy girl.
The Preload series has been such an emotional, heartfelt read. Each book has been a joy to read and I seriously cannot wait for Lennon's book in Lennon Reborn coming May 1st 2018. After reading the 2 page tease at the end of Nikan Rebuilt and sobbing like a baby I know Lennon's story is going to be a heart wrenching one :'(

It's not the book, it's me. I'm bored with the storyline. The angsty part happens before the start of the book. That doesn't work for me, I want the on-page drama. I want to be SHOWN, not TOLD about what happened. Everything was meh for me. I appreciate the hero's grovel and determination to win her back, but this comes after an 8 year separation. It doesn't quite hit the same for me. The sexy times were well-written and made me feel...but not enough to convince me to finish the rest. Still, because of the heartfelt grovel and sexy times, I'm giving it 3 Stars. It's not the book's fault I need more melodrama and angst. Perhaps, more of a connection to the main characters, too.

4.5 emotional, second-chance stars
I have eagerly read all of Scarlett Cole’s books, and I know that she can bring the feels, but OMG, she really brought the feels with this one, and I loved it! A gorgeously emotional second-chance-romance between fascinatingly complicated Nikan and his first love, Jenny, and the story of a man who is struggling to figure out who he is. It’s a beautifully written book that I couldn’t put down, and I absolutely loved it.
Nikan is the guitarist for metal band, Preload, a group of guys that came together in a group home, traumatised from heartbreaking childhoods but who found and saved each other and became closer than brothers. The band went on to become world-famous, and the boys achieved success they never could have dreamed of. Now they are slowly achieving personal happiness, with the boys falling one by one to women who are completing them.
Nik is the self-designated father-figure to the boys. He’s the one that smooths out difficulties, who makes sure everybody is where they need to be, and the one that the boys turn to when they need a voice of reason. But he’s been acting in the role for so long, that he’s forgotten who he is. And watching his brothers find love is making him feel the loss of the only woman he’s ever loved. And then suddenly, she is back.
Jenny was also raised in a group home, and from the moment that she and Nikan met as teenagers, they were it for each other. They became friends, they fell in love and they were soulmates in every sense of the word, knowing that they would be together forever and dreaming of the future they would have. It was perfect until Nikan made a mistake and in one disastrous night, ruined everything. Now Jenny is back in town to manage the very group home where the boys were raised, and from the moment they see each other again, all of those feelings which never went away, are brought right back to the surface in a gut-churning reunion.
OMG, I love an emotional love story, and Nik and Jenny’s is full of feels! Even after being apart for eight years it is clear that they still love each other, but there is so much hurt between them. Nik did wrong, he knows he did wrong, and he is desperate to make up for it. But Jenny has put up walls to protect her heart after Nik left her so broken, and she is fighting hard to keep him away. He has a battle on his hands, but it is one he is determined to win, and OMG, I loved it!
I could feel the depth of the connection between these two, their love for each other, and just how torn up they were over the destruction of everything between them. I loved their honesty, the way they hold nothing back, and Nik’s commitment to making amends and getting his girl back and all of the swoony declarations that go along with that.

It’s not an easy ride for them, but I loved every sweet, funny, painful, heartbreaking and heartachingly romantic moment of their reconnection as they finally faced the past and opened themselves up to each other all over again.
It’s beautiful, and I could feel every emotion the two of them went through, and I was completely swept up in all that they felt for each other. And the sexy time! OMG, it’s hot, intense and passionate, and a blistering reflection of all of those feels.

Running alongside the romance is Nikan’s personal journey, and I loved the complexity of his character. His life has been the band and his brothers for so long, he’s been the glue that holds them all together, and it has taken its toll on him and he no longer even remembers who he is. Now, with Jenny coming back into his life, Nik has reached the point where he needs to take a step back from the co-dependency of his brothers and figure out what he wants. It’s an emotional journey for him, and some of those the scenes with the boys were heartwrenching, but it’s beautifully written and, again, I could feel what he was going through. It ties in beautifully with the love story, and with Jenny dealing with her own issues from the past, and it works to progress their story as they finally get the chance to be there for each other after so many years of coping on their own.
Of course the Preload boys (and their girls) all a big part of the story, and I loved getting to catch up with them. I also loved the additional bonus of getting to see a new generation of boys growing up in the group home, which was both heartbreaking and sweet, and the connection that the Preload boys shared with the kids. And though this book stands alone as its own story, with the tensions that unfolded among the group, and the changes that are happening for them, I cannot WAIT for Lennon’s book up next!

I could not be any more in love with the guys from Preload! Each one I have loved more than the one before, and Nikan definitely holds the lead!
Years ago, Nikan and Jenny were everything to each other. Unfortunately, a quick thrust into stardom as well as life’s struggles, began to batter at Nikan and he made a decision and action that devastated Jenny and tore their relationship to shreds.
Jenny’s history is steeped in darkness coated with memories she will never be able to forget. As a young girl, Nikan was her savior as he helped to shoulder some of the burden she carried just trying to get through her day to day life. When he ripped her heart out of her chest she ran. Now the opportunity to show she can do the job she’s dreamed of has arrived and with it the potential to see Nikan again.
This couple broke my heart and at one point I felt sure the angst was going to shred me to pieces and leave me torn asunder. But Nikan never gave up. He knew what he wanted. He knew what he had lost. And he was determined he would never lose it again.
Ms. Cole has written a beautiful story of heartbreak and finding redemption. The analogy of the title was so perfect because if anyone needed to recognize that they were made of multiple layers and were all the stronger for it, it is Nikan. This author did an outstanding job of making one of those layers his heritage.
This is an amazing story and I absolutely loved how these characters grew stronger as well as all the Preload brothers. Each book has revealed a bit more about them even as their bond is solidified as they each face their own challenges. I’ve loved each of them, but I must confess, Lennon is the one I’ve been waiting for. And so, high on Nikan and Jenny, I settle back to wait.

3.5 “Second Chances” Stars

I’ve been following this series from the very first book, so I was obviously excited to get my hands on Nikan’s story.
While I have to say Lennon’s book is the one I’m most anxious about, I had a good time reading Nikan Rebuilt. It was a little different than what I expected, and maybe lower on the suspense and angst vibe than the previous titles in the series, but it was a pleasant read.
Speaking of Lennon, I often felt he was the star of this book, despite it being about the love between Jenny and Nik. At times, it almost felt like this was a book meant to set things forward for Lennon. But that’s not a complaint, because he is one of the most intriguing members of the band.
Now, about Nik and Jenny. I had my doubts I’d like the romance because it’s centered in two major problematic plot points for me: cheating and second chances.
Cheating is something that normally ruins the book for me, as made clear by many of my reviews. And of all romance tropes, second chances is probably my least favorite. Still, Scarlett Cole managed to write these elements in a way that didn’t make me dislike the story.
Yes, let’s make it very clear from the start, Nik cheated on Jenny when they were young and in love. This book brings an explanation to his behavior. Was it satisfactory? Not really. Would any explanation ever be? Probably not. It wasn’t a horrible explanation, either, so I’ll give him that. It doesn’t hurt that he spent the better part of the story trying to show Jenny he had changed. Was I convinced? Not really. Was I swayed? Probably.
The two of them had chemistry, and I could understand why Jenny decided to forgive him. I could easily tell she loved him a lot, and he did his best showing her he loved her, too. I just don’t know if maybe she should’ve held on a bit longer. Maybe that would’ve helped with the forgiveness angle a bit. Or maybe not. But that’s mostly on me and my intolerance for cheating.
I did love the way Jenny and Nik found purpose working with foster kids and giving them a chance at life. They were both important in the roles they played in those kids’ lives and it certainly helped build a connection between reader and character.
So, while Nikan Rebuilt was not my favorite book from this series, I was happy to see how it moved the overall story forward, and it’s always a pleasure to see the members of Preload again.

Second chances are just so deliciously tortuous. Nikan Rebuilt definitely proved that to me, as Nikan was still dreaming of Jenny, years after their split. Years after not even knowing where in the world she might be. Until a day when he helped a young boy who lived in the same group-home he grew up in. And bringing him back, seeing Jenny being the interim director.
Jenny had done her best to purge Nikan from her thoughts and her heart. And she was pretty sure she had made it, too. Until she saw him again, and her heart and body reacted as if they'd never been apart. However, Jenny knew better than to trust her heart again. And she knew she had to protect herself at all cost.
Nikan Rebuilt brought out the feels big time. Both because Jenny and Nikan both had a tough past, and because especially Nikan was still battling some of his demons. Half indigenous, Nikan has always felt like he didn't belong in either world. Growing up first in foster care, after his mother's murder, then in group-homes just made him think he was right. He always worked hard on making his friends feel good. Taking care of band-members and other people he loved, but not having many people who took care of him.
Between the darkness from the past, and the difficulty Jenny had to trust in the present, Nikan Rebuilt was an emotional rollercoaster. I loved how determined and honest Nikan was, how he wouldn't back down until Jenny actually told him to stop.

Nikan has intrigued me from the beginning of the Preload series. Reading his full story hit me hard, even if I knew what to expect - at least somewhat.
Jenny was a new character in this universe, and I loved her. Her integrity. Her hard work. Her soft heart that she would do anything to protect.
The other band-members showed up at times, too, and it always makes me feel good to see how they're doing on their new journey.
Writing style :
Past tense, third point of view worked really well for Nikan Rebuilt. There were also plenty of dialogues to keep the pace up.

Well, it sums up my view on life. That we should all aspire to live a life that is less boring, less predictable. Be bold, and do something amazing. I’ve made some crazy choices. I’ve been a car maker, a consultant, and even a senior executive at a large retailer running strategy. Born in England, spent time in the U.S. and Japan, before ending up in Canada were I met my own, personal hero – all six and a half feet of him. Both of us are scorpios! Yeah, I know! Should have checked the astrological signs earlier, but somehow it works for us. We have two amazing kids, who I either could never part with or could easily be convinced to sell on e-bay.
I’ve wanted to be a writer for a really long time. Check through my office cupboards or my computer and you’ll find half written stories and character descriptions everywhere. Now I'm getting the chance to follow that dream.

I swear Scarlett Cole is going to literally kill me one of these days. How she can pull you into her character's fictional world, and make you believe it's real? It's unbelievable. And yet she manages to do it. Every. Single. Time.
I'll be honest, I went into this a little wary simply because I knew going in it was a second chance romance. And usually as the norm goes with that trope, the hero for the most part manages to screw up a good thing. And Nikan is no exception. Does he make a huge mistake, one so big it destroyed the woman he loves? Absolutely! Big time!
But silly me, I should've known that Scarlett wouldn't let me down.
This story is about a second chance at true love. Of Atonement. And of coming to terms with the reality that is Nikan's life. One that really isn't his own. One that he lives for the people he loves.
Mad love for this story, and this series! And I can't wait until Lennon's book releases.

I’m going to start this review by saying that Scarlett Cole was a new to me author in 2017 and one of the high points of that year for me author wise. Anyone that follows my reviews knows I’m a sucker for musician/rock star romances so I jumped at the chance to review the Preload series and I was not disappointed. Ms. Cole has a knack for taking characters that are broken and helping them grow, accept, and understand that even though they have these demons inside that they are worthy of more and she does it with such care, warmth, and love that as a reader it is impossible to put her books down and to hopelessly fall in love with her characters. I identified with Nikan so much; he was the oldest, and the “father” figure of the group, he was the fixer, the caretaker, the one to placate everyone and while I was the middle child I played that role in my family and as I got older with my friends and co-workers until I got old enough to realize what being that for everyone was costing me. Thankfully Nikan realized it sooner than I did, but it is so hard to be that type of person and let someone take care of you. I loved this story for many reasons, but mainly because both the main characters had to overcome some things in their own pasts to be able to accept and move on from the incident that tore them apart 8 years prior. This wasn’t an easy story, there was a lot of soul searching, a lot of anger, hurt, and disbelief, but I also loved that both these characters realized that their childhood, their pasts had scarred them and in order to live a happy, productive, loving life they had to work on their own selves before they could commit to one another fully. Thoughtfully written with memorable characters and a second chance at love made Nikan Rebuilt an excellent love story.
There is no doubt that 8 years prior when Preload was first hitting it big that Nikan screwed up royally when he cheated on his then girlfriend Jenny and she left him without a trace. Nikan fully admits he knows he screwed up and after an epic downfall, he has spent the last few years getting his life together and making amends except to the one person he wants to make amends with more than anything. So finding Jenny as the fill in administrator of the group boy’s home he grew up in throws him completely for a loop, but he knows he will do anything to get her back.
There was so much going on in this book with both Nikan and Jenny dealing with their childhood traumas and trying to rebuild a relationship. I liked that Jenny put Nikan through the paces despite the fact that he still made her heart speed up every time he was near. I honestly felt the remorse and sadness that Nikan had for the incident that tore them apart and believed he was sincere when he said he was truly sorry. I admired Jenny for listening, for trying to understand, and for realizing that even though it broke her heart, it didn’t break her, it only made her stronger and more determined to succeed on her own. I love that they used effective communication to rebuild their relationship and when it got to a certain point, they also weren’t afraid to admit that perhaps they needed to see a therapist to completely work out all their issues. A lot went in to building the relationship back between these two just as it should have, but in addition Nikan was making some changes in his own life with his band members, the men he calls his brothers. I am so curious to see what happens next for this group and I’ll also admit the reason this book wasn’t 5 stars is because I felt like Nikan’s dream of doing something different was left unfinished and I felt it was a critical part of his story; that being said this was still a stellar book worth reading.
Heartbreaking at times yet with a sense of hopefulness for a beautiful future, I loved Nikan Rebuilt!

So, I wasn't too keen on reading this book since Nikan cheated on Jenny when they were together when they were younger, however, I've enjoyed the other books in this series and wanted to continue on with it. I'm glad I did.
I in no way condone cheating but I thought that Scarlett Cole told it in such a way that it was easier to accept. This wasn't just a "oh, I'm a big rock star now, I can have any woman I want" thing. This was a weight of the world, everything lays on my shoulders, drank way too much, decision, instantly regretted and he paid a dear price for it. He lost the love of his life for 8 years. Nik worked really hard to earn Jenny's forgiveness and never excused what he did.
However, I still dropped it a star because it involved cheating.
Still a good story and you feel for both characters. You feel the pain both did when they talked about the incident.

And then I came to this book in rereading this wonderful series and like all the others so far, it's still a 5 star read. I'm glad I have all these as well as so many other well loved and 'oft read books on my IPad to carry around with me at all times :-)

I wanted to start my reading year of 2018 with a bang. I was reading a different book and while I was enjoying it well enough it didn’t have the wow factor I was looking for. So when I got notice this book had downloaded, I put the other book aside and picked this one right away. Based on how much I enjoyed the first two books in this series, I thought Nikan Rebuilt would be a winner. And boy was it ever.
This is a second chance at love story. Nikan and Jenny both grew up in the foster care system, both in group homes. While their lives before they ended up in the system were horrendous, Dikan was fortunate to end up in a very good group home with very caring staff and fellow residents he bonded with to the point where they became more than best friends, they became brothers and formed the band Preload which has gone on to become an extremely famous heavy metal band. We have already seen 3 of the band members get their story, now it’s Nikan’s turn. He and Jenny meet in high school when Jenny is being bullied and Nikan saves her. From that moment, they become a couple and though both very young, they were very much in love and thought they would last forever.
Fast forward a number of years, Nikan and the band are very successful and one night while on tour, Dikan makes a mistake that changes the course of his life and Jenny ends things and disappears.
Now it’s current time and eight years later. Jenny has returned and is temporarily head of the group home that Nikan and the rest grew up in. Because they all are still very much involved with the home and the boys living there, Nikan runs into Jenny again and his feelings for Jenny are just as deep and all encompassing as they ever were and Jenny is still greatly in love with Nikan but what he did devastated her and she is doubtful she can forgive him. Nikan knows how badly he screwed up and how much he lost and he just wants a chance to show her who he is now.
That’s the outline of the story and now I have to start the raving and rave I will do. This book is incredible. Every woman should have a Nikan. Yep he screwed up and badly. But his explanation for what happened was believable and makes the reader much more sympathetic. As the oldest, he’s always been the mother hen of the group and does what’s best for them rather than himself. For example, he doesn’t really like doing heavy metal and would like to change it up but he knows another member of the group uses it as an outlet for his rage. It’s Nikan who arranges for them all to live in the same house as it’s something that Jordan needs because of his issues.
But now Nikan has to look after his own problems and concentrate less on the other members, especially since getting Jenny to forgive him and give him another chance. He’s at a turning point in his life and the author does such a great job in letting reader ‘feel’ his confusion and frustration and his longing for Jenny and his guilt for what he did that split them up. He’s one of the best heroes I’ve read in a while – and I’ve read some really good ones.
I would say that Nikan makes the book but Jenny is such a wonderful heroine that she deserves as much credit for this being such a great read as he does. She’s still very deeply in love but she’s clear with him that she doesn’t trust him, that he needs to earn it back if that’s even possible. One thing that sets this book higher than many they talk things through. The both realize that they have to be open and honest if there is any hope for them. There’s no big misunderstandings, they are both mature and intelligent people.
I say this in each of the Preload reviews but something else that really sets these ones above for me is they take place in Toronto, a city I’ve visited many a time. One scene takes place at Rogers Centre (though it will always be Skydome to me) and as a family we would go there 4 or 5 times a summer to catch the Jays. Eaton’s centre is mentioned and as I’ve been there quite often I can close my eyes and see it. And most of all Ms. Cole mentions Tim Horton’s a lot. Now not many people outside of Canada know this probably but there is almost a symbiotic relationship between “Timmies” and most Canadians. It’s the go to place for coffee – though I myself stop at Mickey D’s to pick up my morning coffee on the way to work. But EVERYONE knows about Timmies. The author married a Canadian and lived in Canada for a while so she really ‘gets’ things.
Something else that gets mentioned in this book that puts it way up high is her referencing the struggle that Indigenous People went through for many years and are still struggling with to this day to what was done to them. The Canadian government, in their unbelievable and unconscionable arrogance stole the children away from their parents and put them in ‘schools’ were they were stripped of their culture, their language, everything that made them an important nation.
A great deal of thanks goes to the late Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip for letting the average Canadian know about this great dark part of Canada’s history.
The inclusion of this storyline makes this a very emotional book. Nikan father was First Nations and after ignoring his heritage for most of his life, this is something he starts considering. I felt this really added something special to the book. It wasn’t done in any kind of preachy tone at all, but more of an added feature to the story.
After finishing this book now I want to go back and read the previous books, this time paying attention to Nikan. In case anyone is wanting to know what they are:

I love second chance romances and I loved this one even more because it had a strong heroine who didn't buckle under pressure and intense and sexy stare of a hero and made him really work for it.
As you could guess from my first sentence, I really enjoyed the reunion of Jenny and Nikan. They were both amazing, incredible characters but there were one too many distractions that lead more or less nowhere in the story. I'm talking about the letters in the wall and the TV show Who am I?. I honestly didn't care a bit about the letters (they felt redundant to me right from the moment they were introduced in the story) but I wanted to read about how Nikan handled the show, how he represented his people and their misfortunate history.

From the first glimpse I got at these special guys they were always dear to my heart. I remember when they were introduced as secondary characters in this authors previous series and I also remember almost begging Ms. Cole to write a series for them because I felt they wanted their story to be told. They were to big to remain in the shadows.
And it feels like we were on the same page when it came to each and every one of the characters …. Especially on my feeling that Lennon would be the last because while all of them have a lot to tell to the readers it was from the beginning Lennon who seemed the darkest of them all.
There was just one character I could never fully grasp and that was Nikan - Somehow he never came into the focus for me before and I am not even sure why. But fact is his story was a lot more than I would have ever expected. I can not condone what he did to Jenny – not for a second and I fully understand Jenny in everything she was saying and doing.
But the explanations the reader is receiving …. well they do not make it OK but they help understanding how it happened and the author describes a magnetism between the characters that makes it hard to not think of them as a couple.
Also I think so far this was the most emotional on of the books. When I got my first glimpse at theses Guys I would have thought Jordan’s story to be most emotional one given his circumstances but the more you get to know the guys the more the view shifted … and now I know that so far this was the deepest one that involved a lot of soul-searching. But I also know something else … and

This book was a second chance lovers dream. If you are like me and love to see old wounds slowly heal and for all the pain that two lost loves hide away come to the surface and boil over before healing and learning to love again, then you are in for a treat!
Nikan and Jenny had a love for the ages when they were both in foster homes. They lived the hardest lives possible before they were even grown but it was going to be okay because they had each other. Then as they ages and he came to fame everything changed. Let me tell you why this is one of my absolute favorites by Scarlett Cole. Without giving away spoilers let me tell you that the subject matter is hard, their story is so full of pain that it is not an easy fix. But that is what I loved most about it. When Jenny arrives back in town she doesn’t easily welcome her lost love back into her life. They both have to work t become friends again before it ever goes anywhere else. It is that slow burn kind of love that just resonates in your soul and makes it impossible to put the book down.
NIkan Rebuilt is a book that even a week later has not left me. I am still thinking about it and the more I think on it the more I am in love with what the author gave us. So many books nowadays are written too safe which makes them all read so similar to me. But NIkan Rebuilt tackles problems often skimmed over and does so in a way that had me falling harder for Scarlett Cole than I already had. I love this entire series of standalones, but Nikan now holds a special place in my heart that is going to be hard to beat.

The Preload men and their family honestly break my heart and fill it with immeasurable hope. I don’t know how Scarlett Cole gets me to feel both at the same time but she does, and I can’t get enough.
The character of Nikan gives this book a different feel from the first two. The overall tone of the book is calmer, less tumultuous, because of all the men in this band, Nik has been the voice of reason. He has been the one to care for them, to keep them together, and to give them a future. During this novel, readers get to see him flounder as the roles in the group change as each of the men have found their happiness. Even as he is lost and searching, he still retains his clam, accepting presence. On top of his role change within the band, he works tirelessly to get back the woman he has lost, and the way he loves her and the way he attempts to win her back with such care and understanding is unlike most heroes in the romance world, and so incredibly true to his character. Readers will absolutely want this selfless and caring man to find his place, his new role, and his real forever home.
Jenny has some gumption, which I love in a heroine, and not the fierce independent tell-it-like-it-is female. It is a quiet strength. The way she takes care of herself when it falls apart took an inner confidence she shouldn’t have had at her age. Her love of the boys in her care takes a world of patience and is a love that not everyone possesses. But her most outstanding attribute is her capacity to forgive, to open her heart again, and to be truthful with herself and others. This woman carries a lot on her shoulders and asks for very little in return, which is awe-inspiring.
Nikan Rebuilt lacks the turmoil and angst of the previous books in the Preload series, and this is truly because of the characters. What has broken these two up has already occurred and considerable time has passed, and while the author could have made the story about anger and betrayal, she made it about healing and forgiveness. This unusual second chance romance plot choice is refreshing, and readers will enjoy that the focus is on coming together and finding a new home, a bit reconfigured, for these two who have endured so much.
Scarlett Cole continues to break my heart with the Preload men, but every single story has been worth the pain, because not only does she show readers the power of romantic love but she also shows that family is more than blood. These men and the other characters who have been brought into he series have created their own family, their own homes, and their own happiness, and this is an idea I can solidly believe in.

I've read every book in the Preload series, and each one has been phenomenal. Romance at its best. And Nikan Rebuilt is another wonderful addition to the series that's probably going to have me crying into a glass of wine when it ends. Scarlett Cole has this ability to pack so much emotion into her books that it's like having your breath snatched away in a wind tunnel. In the best way, of course. Nikan Rebuilt is no different on that front.
I have a weakness for second chance/reunion stories, and this book is one of those. Nikan and Jenny both grew up in the foster system. Both suffered in their childhoods, were left emotionally scarred, and found a haven, understanding, kinship, and love in one another. They were so in love and tight, but then Preload started hitting it big, and Nikan destroyed them. Now, years later, he runs into her again, and for him, it's his deepest wish coming true. For her, it's a painful reminder of everything she had, what she could've had, and what was ripped from her. Jenny isn't quick to trust Nikan again, and I have to tell you, when I found out what Nikan did, I didn't blame her. But--and this is how awesome a writer Scarlett Cole is--what would've been a deal breaker for me under other circumstances, wasn't. I WANTED them together, and kept feverishly reading to see when--if--it would happen. To see how they would weather this storm-filled journey. It. Was. Beautiful. And hot as hell. But I mean, It's a Scarlett Cole book.
Another thing I love about this series is that with each book, a heavy subject is tackled. And with each one of them, I always put the book down feeling like I learned more, was educated, without it taking over the romance. The subject is weaved so expertly into the story that it's impossible to separate one from the other. With Nikan, he's First Nations, which is a native Indian. His experiences as a First Nations child with parents and grandparents who suffered through the abuse of residential schools and life on the reserves shaped him. His view point and history is so different and interesting that I had to go look it up. Just wow. Like I said, his history, his identity didn't overpower the story, it enriched it.
I loved this book. Loved. And I'm anxiously awaiting Lennon's story. I know that's going to break me! And I'm here for it!

Ok, I'm gonna be unpopular here. This guy, he wasn't a cheater. He shouldn't have been written as a cheater. I've NEVER met a more sensitive, kind, heroic.............fatherly.........cheater in my life. This book wasn't about cheating. It was about a man and a woman coming to terms with the very hard lives they were forced to live. He did fail and betray her, but for once (if you'll read through the whole thing) I understood where he was coming from. Didn't make it easier and he definitely paid for it, unfortunately she did too. But.... Crappy lives. It works out. Well written,too.
I read as a stand alone and have no desire to read the first 3, but probably will read Lennons book. Quite the tortured hero there.

Another great Preload book. Loved Nikan and Jenny plus seeing all the other boys and their ladies again. Lots of drama and hot sex. Why is it not 5 stars you ask...how many times was he going to have to apologize for something that happened years and years ago? Loved all the interaction between the boys...but there's a story line started that was left open
Now will I be able to wait until May for Lennon's book especially after that two page teaser...

Raw and stripped bare is how I felt after reading this story. The latest book in the series is the most intense story of all the three books.
From the previous books, we got to know that Nikan had cheated on Jenny. I could guess it wasn't a simple story but the way the author peeled the layers of H/h and what went on in their lives and state of mind is a masterpiece. Giving the characters a f*cked up backstory is easy but making them shine while being a normal flawed human is heart wrenching.
The story is mainly character-driven which is a pleasure to read because I don't have to worry about a plot cliché trying to push the characters away.
Scarlett Cole is now on my auto-read list. Now I can't wait for Lennon's story next. I have a feeling I need to stock up more tissues for the waterworks.

Nikan Rebuilt, a second chance romance.
I like the concept behind this series. 4 guys who all grew up in a group home, they form a band and stardom finds them.
Each band member has a story of their own and this is Nik and Jenny's.
Jenny and Nik were teenage sweethearts, first loves, with hopes and dreams involving each other.
When Nik goes on his first tour and Jenny stays behind to continue her education she supports him and awaits his return but a one night stand caught by the press ends it all.
Jenny leaves and Nik never finds her.
Eight years later and the girl who herself was once in a foster home is now a worker for children in care.
The story starts with Jenny getting a new job in the town she once called home and the past is disclosed as the story progresses.
Nik and the band still support the group home they grew up in and are active with the boys on a regular basis whenever they are home from tour with the band, this is when Nik finds Jenny again.
The new worker who joins the group home he discovers is Jenny.
Eight years of wandering where Jenny went with no chance to apologize or explain is suddenly at Niks feet and it's time to grovel to get her back.
Nik and Jenny's reunion is awkward. Jenny is still full of hurt while Nik is full of regrets for his immature decisions all those years ago.
Nik is determined to get his Jenny back now he has found her and Jenny needs to let go and forgive.
Nikan Rebuilt is a heart warming journey with great characters, no angst or drama which is sometimes needed to keep you turning the pages, it felt like a middle book the bit inbetween, a character that needed to be covered but he wasn't as interesting as the others but the journey was sweet, Nik and Jenny's story needed to be told and it did lead to an overdue hea for Jenny and Nik.
A story of second chances, finding ones self, trust, healing and hope.
Told in third person dual pov. Third book in the series.
