Tom Reed (Great Wyoming Bear Stories) has a real affinity for horses and wilderness, and it shows on every page in his true tales about trail riding, horse packing, and great mountain horses. Horse lovers will love this book, but Tom's writing is transcendent. Even if you have never saddled up, you will be drawn into these heart-tugging stories of special horses, their remarkable abilities, and the inescapable bonds that develop between horses and humans.
A great memoir of horses, hunting and the wild country of northern Wyoming. The author's love of horses, dogs, hunting and wild country resonated with me as I fully understood his passion for horses, dogs, and lonely trails. I gave up hunting after my first combat tour in Viet Nam and have no wish to kill any of God's critters unless absolutely necessary. My reticence to killing does not extend to humanity especially our Moslem enemies. The conversational writing style made for an enjoyable and relaxing read. One gets the feeling that the adventures and travels the author recounts are soon to be things of the past in a world growing more crowded, vulgar and chaotic. There is less and less room for folks that love freedom and wild country. Horses represent those values of freedom and independence that shaped this once great country and there is less and less room for them too.
Beautiful and poignant. Horses are in my blood, and I still feel wonder for the natural world. I could feel that peace and soulfulness in these stories.
Although he talks of hunting, and I'm not a hunter, the focus is on horses, wild lands and wildlife. Such a beautiful book I was sad when I got the last page.
