Probably better in paperback

Charts, meal plans, lists don't show up well on my Kindle . There is no color coding either . I had really hoped this diet would stick to the scientific . It starts out good , criticizing other dietary information as false and not evidence-based and then proceeds to drift into its own biases . Perhaps a lot of it has to do with coming from South Africa whereas I live in Canada . We depend on preservatives and processing in order to have food to eat throughout our eight-month non-growing season. Our livestock also depends on being fed to survive . There are many things that are listed or mentioned as being unhealthy or not what we want to put into our bodies yet the scientific evidence is not there to justify these bans and biases.
The main thrust of this diet, though, is to reduce carbohydrate intake and increase fat in the diet . I'd have been happier if they stuck to that premise.

Useful for exploring the LCHF diet/lifestyle. Be aware the meal plans are difficult to read on a Kindle! But it can be done.

Also be aware it was written by a South African for South Africans, and there are many food terms we Americans will not be familiar with, and brand names we can't get. Food terms can be searched on the internet, brands that don't ship to the US are a little tricky.

I bought it primarily for the meal plans in an attempt to discover how macros relate to portion size. Or vice versa. I don't regret it, the price was reasonable, but it wasn't a great deal of help. The unfamiliar brand names and foods were interesting, I always enjoy reading a cookbook.

A true life-changing eating programme.

The word “Banting” is slowly becoming the buzzword around the world when referring to the eating programme that recommends high fat, low carbs. That’s the simplistic definition. Eating fats, lots of green vegetables, nuts and seeds and cutting out all sugars and carbohydrates can help eliminate diabetes, especially type 2, which is becoming one of the most diagnosed diseases, costing not only billions in medical care but also how much damage it does to people’s lives.

The Banting programme dates to the obese William Banting born in 1796. It was by pure chance, that he met Dr William Harvey, who had recently returned from Paris with the idea that people could lose weight while eating high fat, low carbs, especially those containing starches and sugars. More importantly, the lectures he attended were on the discovery that Claude Bernard had made after studying the pancreas and liver and the dreaded disease, diabetes. Claude Bernard was sure that with the correct diet, the disease could be avoided. Banting followed the eating plan and lost 11 stone in twelve months.

In 1980 Prof Tim Noakes was tasked to start a sports science course at the University of Cape Town. Noakes went on to head the Medical Research Council-funded Bioenergetics of Exercise Research Unit, which was later changed to the MRC/UCT Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine.

Prof Tim Noakes became a household name for long-distance runners, especially after publishing his first book, The Lore of Running, in 1986. In this book, he suggested high carbs, lots of pasta, before running a marathon. However, in 2010 this all changed. After studying the Banting idea and having done intense research, his whole idea regarding what we eat changed. The Banting Diet or its other name, The Real Meal Revolution was born.

Word spread and thousands of people have changed their lives through this plan. Me included. I was chatting to a friend in South Africa who mentioned that her brother had lost 45 kgs and her sister, 25 kgs. Her sister had to treat her diabetes by administering an injection, sometimes several times a day. Thanks to the diet, she had all but got this under control and no longer needed injections - only pills. I have been overweight for years. It has caused problems with my health, fibromyalgia, diverticular disease and allergies being the most common among my problems.

Having nothing to lose, I bought both the Real Meal Revolution and this book. Soon, the Green, Orange, Grey, Red and Very Red list of foods became my best friends. Five months later I’ve lost 10 kilos. My cholesterol level has dropped, there is no sign of any diabetes in my system (both these had been flagged in my annual medical in previous years). However, it’s the other benefits I’ve had. My allergies have all but disappeared. Diverticular disease has not turned into diverticulitis since I started. My fibro is now manageable and the high dose of tablets I was on to keep it more-or-less manageable, is no longer necessary AND I have more energy.

If you, too, want to change your life for whatever reason, then this is the easy way to do it. Going out for a meal is not a hassle, menus can be easily adapted so that you not only never cheat, but also never feel hungry.

Prof Tim Noakes, thank you for being prepared to go where others feared to tread.

Good and bad

I have been a trainer for 30 years. The low carbs I do agree with. Protein being low and fats even though they are good fats being high. I disagree.
I have trained many clients from bodybuilders, models, average person and diabetics. The protein higher, carbs lower, and fats around 20% of total calories gets the job done.
