The second half of Luke's Gospel sees Jesus walking to Jerusalem to die on his cross in order to open his kingdom to anyone who would come. Luke offers joyful certainty not just that God's kingdom is perfect, but that its gates are open.
With a close attention to the text and a focus on real-life application, Mike McKinley brings us face to face with Jesus in a compelling way for both experienced and new readers of this Gospel.
Mike McKinley is the author of Passion, Did the devil make me do it? and Church Planting is for Wimps. Since 2005 he has been pastor of Guilford Baptist Church in Sterling, Virginia. Before that, he served on the pastoral staff of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington DC, having received his MDiv from Westminster Theological Seminary. Mike is married to Karen, and they have five children.
These are dark days. It can often seem overwhelming. Jesus undoubtedly can speak into our present situation, and in Luke 12-24 For You, Mike McKinley helps you understand the second half of the Gospel of Luke.
God’s Word For You
God’s Word For You is a series of books by The Good Book Company that seeks to take you to the heart of a book of the Bible and apply its truth to your heart. They attempt to be Bible-centered, Christ-glorifying, relevantly applied, and easily readable. I found this to be especially true of Luke 12-24 For You.
This volume was written by Mike McKinley, Pastor of Sterling Park Baptist Church in Sterling Virginia. His pastoral role is appreciated, as he brings us to Jesus’ suffering, forgiveness, and suffering with the eager expectation of spiritual transformation.
Guide
In less than 200 pages, McKinley gives us a guided tour of the book of Luke. We encounter Jesus’ parables and preparation for his disciples. We are brought into the story of Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, trial, and crucifixion. And we feel the joys of his resurrection.
As is fitting for our current situation of COVID-19, there is a sense of urgency McKinley helps us grasp. Our pride is humbled and we are warned of Christ’s judgment and return in glory. Now is the time to see Jesus for who he says he is and experience what he has to offer in salvation, grace, and freedom.
Resource
What I appreciate most about this book series is the number of resources it has to offer. While it acts as a commentary, it can also be read as a devotional. Each section concludes with questions for reflection. These are usually personal application questions that are perfect for a small group study or Sunday School class.
There is a glossary at the back of the book with words that are specifically related to the book of Luke. These terms include adoption, justified, redemption, and Samaritan. I received this book and Luke 1-12 as a set - and I highly recommend reading both to grasp the full picture of Luke’s Gospel.
Passion
At the end of Luke, Jesus opens eyes on the road to Emmaus. He helps others see who he truly is. Next, He returns to his disciples. And while initially startled and frightened, he tells them not to be afraid. The Gospel of Luke is a word of hope and encouragement for us today - when we see Jesus for who he really is, we have no reason to be afraid.
I received a media copy of Luke 12-24 For You and this is my honest review.
The Gospel of Luke is one of the most read parts of Holy Scripture, one of the least understood Gospels. The longest gospel, Luke is so with the teachings of Jesus to digest period if you struggle with digesting dense passages of scripture then Luke 12 – 24 for you. This fantastic devotional is written by studious exegete mike McKinley produced the good book company is one of the newest volumes “For You” devotional series. Each volume in this series and better anxiously await further volumes. With regard to this volume specifically can we has made a well-informed choice to break the gospel of Luke into two volumes. This being the second volume, it mostly covers the final week of Jesus’s Earthly Ministry leading up to his atoning sacrificial death on the cross and his triumphant Resurrection.
This devotional keeps the standard format as with previous works in the series. The Format is explaining the text with specific attention paid to applications in the life of the believer followed by a series of questions stayed inside application. This can be seen in the three basic tenets “read, feed, and lead.” I was very encouraged by the work on the passion narratives and how well McKinley explain the text with careful attention to cultural nuances of the ancient near East without confusing most Christians.
This devotional commentary while best suited for personal devotions can also be a great aid in teaching a Sunday school class or leading a life group study. No matter where you are in your walk with Christ this volume in the for you series is worthy of your time of reading and rereading again and again so you can understand and apply the latter half of Luke’s gospel.
This book was provided to me free of charge from The Good Book Company in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.
A helpful series. In this one, like volume one, the exposition is quite descriptive without much theological depth, but had some insights that I found personally convicting.
