Didn’t sit well with me

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 3/10

PROS:
- The variety in the alien cities and landscapes is well done. Each different place Megan travels to is as different as are differing countries and cities on our own planet.
- Shepard makes some subtle cultural/political digs here and there that I found amusing, like this one: “I talked more about Earth than they did about Sweendi, but we found many subjects of common interest, including religion. They were thrilled to hear my stories of the antique Egyptian, Greek and Aztec gods and to find similarities with their own cult.”

CONS:
- I was bored for long stretches of the story and found myself wanting to skim it. After examining why the book failed to keep my attention (it’s not poorly written, and it has a decent plot), I finally landed on this: the story is about a submissive who doesn’t seem to me to be submissive. It’s not that she’s a sub who enjoys acting out and being punished for it. It’s that she supposedly loves her dominant partner with all her heart but is miserable much of the time when performing the submissive tasks he asks her to perform.
- There are several instances in which the book gets too wordy / expository / exploratory with regard to Megan’s thoughts on submission or her relationship or her new life. Nothing truly happens for the first 9% of the book, for instance, because she’s tied to a tree and all she’s doing is pondering things and remembering a few brief flashbacks.
- I had a fundamental problem with the story. SPOILER ALERT…
SPOILERS FOLLOW……HERE BE SPOILERS……
I’m cool with polyamorous relationships. I’ve enjoyed a lot of poly stories. What I don’t enjoy is stories in which one character goes off and has sex with someone other than her partner—without his knowledge or consent—and then when they come back together the three people form a relationship out of thin air. No discussion. No indication that this is something they’ve all been wanting. It’s just, “Well it was all a misunderstanding way back then, and he’s been having sex with you for a while now anyway, so… we might as well just share, right?”
MORE SPOILERS AHEAD (although it’s really just the same spoiler)…
- I couldn’t feel the love between Megan and Khiru. And then later, I couldn’t feel the love between Megan and Kalhan. Desire, maybe, but not love. The book just felt like a series of sex/BDSM scenes and descriptions of a sci-fi world.

Overall comments: So much about this book rubbed me the wrong way. There’s a lot of genuinely unpleasant stuff in it: kidnapping, confinement, dubious consent, repeated rape. I’d say that at least 70% of the book is comprised of Megan in questionable situations that I didn’t enjoy reading about. And then when she’s finally rescued after months of captivity, Khiru immediately ravishes her rather than gathering her close to make her feel safe. Then there’s that other spoilery thing at the end that I’ve already mentioned. I didn’t like this one at all.
