I found the book okay except for the plot. Miranda and John were both sweet and interesting enough, the writing was decent, but the miscommunication (or better yet no communication) and the meddling aunt was too much for me and ruined the story for me.

3 Stars!

This book is kind of short, so strong character development is not to be expected. The heroine's lack of self esteem regarding her body structure is rather repetitive making my eyes roll every time it was mentioned.

The lack of conflict between their relationship except for the auntie is a bit boring. I was looking forward to having a broody hero, but he was not. In fact, he was respectful and quite gentleman.

Overall, if you're looking for a quick short read, this will do.

This book was good, I liked the characters and sympathized with them, but there were things that bothered me and just got in the way of me enjoying it more.

Miranda underwent some trauma at the start of this novella. She is constantly made to feel lesser than her sister by her mother, but she and her sister are close and she does what she can to help support her sister through her own work as a maid. But when tragically loses her sister and then is dismissed from her job for leaving to see her sister when she meets with complications during childbirth. She goes to respond to a young woman who will then connect her with a man seeking a mail-order bride. This woman is incredibly gernerous and kind to Miranda in her time of need, taking her in and providing food and lodging until they find a suitable match. This woman is genuinely so kind and it really bothered me that no mention was made later on of Miranda making any effort to keep in contact, after promising she would. I know there were a lot of changes going on in Miranda's life and it wasn't probably her top priority but at least let her know you arrived safely.

I liked John, but I later realized just how weak he was as a character. This man loves his children so much and they are clearly taking well to Miranda and much happier under her care than his aunt's, but he yet continues to allow his aunt to rule his house by fear while he is at work everyday. Why are you continuing to subject your daughters to a woman who is terrorizing them and belittling them constantly and you can clearly see the negative effects everyday? Just because your aunt helped you get by after your first wife's death doesn't mean that you shoud choose avoiding injuring your aunt's feelings and pride over your children's mental health. Boo, not here for it.

I liked Miranda, she was sweet. I really felt for her character that her low self-esteem was so instilled in her that she was constantly doubting herself and that it shadowed her every action. She was making growth in having confidence in herself when it came to caring for her new daughters, asserting herself as the woman in the house, and running the home while caring for those around her. So it was disappointing that she then developed an eating disoder because she convinced herself that if she lost weight her husband would finally be able to find her attractive. But she very easily overcomes this eating disorder once she gets some validation from her husband, so then it just felt like a flimsy plot device and undermined the concern I felt for her character.

Overall it was a good read, especially taking into consideration that it all took place within such a limited number of pages. I would consider reading more from this series or author in the future. It's not something that I'm rushing to do right now, but maybe at some point I'll revisit this series to read the next book, Audra

This is a very clean mail order bride book. It was pretty predictable and the writing never got above pedestrian. John and Miranda are interesting enough and I enjoyed their "getting to know you" struggles. I liked how Miranda dealt with the annoying relative of John's. But the book was so forgettable that even after just finishing it I can barely recall anything of interest in it.

A sweet clean mail order bride theme title with some good depth. All the characters have great character arcs where everyone grows to be better people including the cruel antagonist. I was so happy for the ending for this couple and their changed family thanks to Miranda's kindness, heart, bravery, and wisdom.

Language: No profanity.

Sensuality content: Clean. Kisses and embraces only as the hero chooses to not make it a "real marriage" physically which is one of the story's conflicts.

Religion: None. Secular clean and wholesome romance genre.

Source: My own purchased library.

Miranda was working for a wealthy family until her sister passed away in child brith. After burying sister and child she went to see Elizabeth who handles mail order brides service.

She sends a letter back to John who lives in Texas. She will help take care of his two 5 year old twins. Ellie and Hope.

John has his overbearing aunt helping with the girls and they are miserable. Nancy, John’s first wife passes away from being sick. Now, Miranda comes in and takes to the girls right away even though the aunt Ruth finds fault with everything.

Can Miranda help John see the girls are being treated like she was as a kid and it’s not right? Can they make this marriage real?

A nice story of second chances and real love can heal any wounds. The characters were great to read about and we see changes with everyone.

Needs more detail

Miranda has lost her sister and job all in one day and is now homeless. Seeing an advertisement for men in the West wanting brides, she visits the address mentioned. Worried that no man will find her worthy of being attractive enough because it had been drummed into her by her mother, she still takes a chance. What else can she do?
John Weaver is a widower with twin girls aged five. He runs a diner while his Aunt Ruth looks after his girls, but the girls are becoming withdrawn and morose because of their aunt's strict, no nonsense regime. It is time to look for a mother for them without his heart or feelings becoming involved.

The story idea was good, but I felt it could have been packed with lots more detail to make it even more interesting. More conversations between the girls and Miranda perhaps and not so much introspection about her self image. The reader got the message.
I know what it feels like to be brought up with little self worth and indeed it is difficult to overthrow, even when in later life friends disparage what your family have led you to believe about yourself. I also brought my two children up giving them positive images of themselves.
I should have liked to see that in the book. Did she ever have the conversation about the freckles afterwards? Was that the only sentence she mentioned about the child's lack of eating everything on the plate? Miracles don't happen unless you reinforce them. This would have been valuable padding to the story, not just to skate over phrases and move on. This makes the difference between good and great books.

To much introspection also from John and not enough positive interaction between the two characters. All we see us them washing/drying dishes or occasional sentences in front of the fire. The reader is expected to imagine that other activities are going on behind the scenes. John goes from a vow of never loving again after the love of his life dies to suddenly telling Miranda he loves her more than he ever did his wife! I do hate that when authors do this. It makes a mockery of the first love you are led to believe about. Why can't he just find a new love?

I don't usually read many mail order bride books, as I've read some clunkers in the past, but I was pleasantly surprised with this novella. It's easy to read with a 'sweet' romance and no sex scenes. This by itself isn't a problem, except there was hardly any slow burn or sizzle between the H/h (only a couple of chaste kisses), so it made me disconnect a bit from their budding romance, which was a pity. Anyway, the actual back story was lovely and engaging, the twins were cute and I liked that John owned a diner, which was unusual. A pleasant read. 🙂

I don’t typically read romance, the book was free on Kindle and I was maybe a little bored with this stay at home time, and wanted a quick read.

This book is a nice story that is a fast read with good pacing. The story deals with raising girls to be confident woman, a topic that is timely.

While being raised to think of herself as worthless, unattractive, overweight and destined to be a failure, Miranda had given up on love but found herself headed west as a mail order bride as a last desperate measure.

Miranda and John

Miranda is working for a horrible family. The Toliver's have never once shown any of their employees compassion. When Miranda must leave her station one day, without permission, she never thought she would have a more miserable day. She runs to her sister's home only to find out she's to late! The doctor and midwife are outside the door covered in blood and she is told they did everything they could, but her sister Beth and the baby didn't make it. When she arrives back to the house she works at, Mrs. Toliver says she is sorry for her loss, but, fires her on the spot and she is told to get her things and leave immediately! Her friend Lilly slips her the newspaper with the hope she will be able to find a job inside. John knows he can't go on like he is. Taking care of the diner every day and trying to figure out how to spend time with his twin daughters Holly and Ellie. It's been a year since Nancy died and his Aunt Ruth has stepped in to help him with the girls, but something's wrong. The girls are getting worse not better as he had hoped. So he finally takes his friend Pete's advice and writes to a Miss Miller in Boston for help in sending him a bride. When he first lays eyes on Miranda he is taken aback, she is nothing like she described herself in her letter. No he can't believe how pretty she is. Only he made a promise to Nancy! What is that promise? Will his five year old daughter's like her? Will Aunt Ruth? Will she be a help to him? Read this great story by Margery Scott to find out. 😊

Easy quick read.

Gotta really feel for Miranda. She’s been told all her life by her mother that she isn’t pretty, she’s fat, she can’t do anything right. Then her sister dies in childbirth and because Miranda left her housemaid job without permission, she’s fired.

Then her life starts to improve dramatically. She answers a mail order bride advertisement, and the woman who placed the ad not only immediately finds Miranda a husband, she lets Miranda stay with her until the arrangements are made.

Didn’t like John as much. He is grieving his wife’s death, running a successful diner, and tuning over the care of his five year old twin girls to his rigid, fault finding Aunt Ruth. Ruth continues criticizing the girls, then starts on Miranda. John still doesn’t stand up for them.

John and Miranda are falling in love but have not consummated the marriage and are not communicating why. Miranda assumes it’s because she isn’t attractive to him. John is consumed with guilt because he promised his dead wife he wouldn’t love another woman.

Blah, blah, blah, and everyone lives happily ever after.

A Family for Miranda

Mail Order Miranda is a lovely historical romance about Miranda, who works as a maid for a rich hateful family. Her sister goes into labor and since Miranda goes to be with her she is fired. Miranda loses everything and decides to become a mail order bride to John, a widower in Texas with 2 young daughters. John's aunt, a condescending witch, has been helping John with his daughters, Ellie and Hope, since his wife died and she is making everyone miserable especially his girls. John promises his dead wife that he will never love another woman but needs a wife and mother to care for their daughters. When John meets Miranda, he is instantly smitten but fights it tooth and nail. Miranda loves John's daughters but his aunt continues to criticize everyone and everything Miranda and the girls do. Miranda starts to fall in love with John but because of him continuing to keep his distance and Aunt Ruth's constant criticism she feels like she is not good enough and wonders if she should go back to Boston.

This is a really a great story and I really loved it and I had to read it from the first page until the end because I couldn’t put it down.
This story has everything you love and hate about mail order brides.
Our hero needs a wife to take care of his twin girls to take care of his home.
He owns a diner and is hoping to expand it someday but he is working really hard and can’t take care of his diner and his home and family so he sends for a mail order bride. In the meantime, his very strict and demanding aunt steps in with taking care of the girls.
Miranda arrives in Sapphire Springs after a matchmaker in Beckham, MA finds her a match.
Our hero John is waiting for her at the train station and he is astounded at the woman waiting for him. She wrote and told him she wasn’t thin or beautiful and he couldn’t disagree more but he made a promise to his dead wife and intends to keep it.
This will be a story you have to read if you love historical western romance. If just love clean romance then give this one a try. I highly recommend this story.

This was a very good book! I enjoyed it and would recommend it to those who want a nice, clean romance that is also a quick read.

A lot of people are commenting on the character's reactions and the whole plot of the story, and I would have to disagree. While men may remarry after a wife is deceased, John saw his wife dying for weeks and it is inferred that she asked him not to fall in love with someone else. It was not even a year after that, that he met Miranda. It seems reasonable that he would have reservations.

As for the children, I can see how he would wait a while to tell his aunt she is being too harsh. While he was grieving and unable to care for his daughters, she did. He is so grateful, he doesn't want to hurt his aunt or seem like he was just using her.

So, in conclusion, this was a really good book. I enjoyed it and felt the emotions of the characters personally. I enjoyed the twins and other characters immensely. You should give this book a try!

Miranda Lowe has just lost her job and her sister (she died having a baby) on the same day.  Devastated on both counts, Miranda finds an ad for mail-order brides.  With no place to stay for the night and little money, Miranda sees little choice.

John Weaver needs a mother for his twin five-year-old daughters.  He's still in love with his wife and no one where he lives wants a ready-made family.  Thus, he asks for a mail-order bride. Unfortunately, he neglects to tell this to his new bride.

Mail-order brides are one of my favorite plot types, however, this one just replayed the general themes, although the author did it well.  This is the opening book of a 5-book series about women who come to Sapphire Springs, Texas, to marry.  It is less than 150-pages and the plot moves at a brisk pace.

Texas heat

When Miranda's life crumbles in the span of a few hours the Beckham resident seeks the help of Elizabeth Miller. John is a widower who has twin daughters and sorely needs some help other than hid aging Aunt Ruth who possesses a sharp tongue and an evil eye. Her discipline of the little ones is leading them to be more and Moe sullen. At his friend Pete's urging, John send for a bride. When Miranda arrives in Sapphire Springs John knows immediately that he's in trouble. This is not the frizzy haired, plump girl he expected. Can help Miranda to find her inner and outer beauty and can be forgive himself for falling in love with his wife? It's a good thing Miranda has backbone and can take the Texas heat.

Miranda, Mail-Order Brides of Sapphire Springs, by Margery Scott is an American Western romance character-driven story. I appreciated Ms. Scott’s writing style. She immediately provides the backstory into her two main characters when we meet Miranda Lowe, the female lead, and John Weaver, the male lead. Both characters are multi-layered and wounded while both needs saving. Both are strong and disillusion but are realists and thus we understand their agreement to enter an arranged marriage through the vehicle of a mail-order contract. It soon becomes evident that their plight is one of a tests of wills but the one saving grace is that they both have a common end goal—the happiness and welfare of twin girls.

Ms. Hutton expertly utilized two literary devices—dialog and descriptive language. I found the dialog to be exceptional. I also appreciated how she incorporated each character’s inner dialog with themselves to reveal their true feelings. This helps readers to more than identify with them but to understand them. Her clever use of this helps readers to see these characters grow and change. Likewise, the descriptive language she employed crystalized scenes in the reader’s mind. For example, the scenes in the barn when Miranda learns to milk a cow transports a reader to be a first-hand witness. There are sex scenes in this book, but I believe Ms. Hutton handled them respectfully. If you want to learn more about Miranda and John and what led them to their quests for second chances, then I highly recommend you picking up this book and reading it. Happy reading!

If I could go back in time and pick a different book I would but unfortunately I picked this because it had good ratings 😒 the characters in this made me want to scream they were so stupid. I can’t count the amount of times the main woman talked about how overweight, ugly and “past her prime” she was. SHE WAS 22! I realize back then that age was a little different but give me a break! This woman literally started starving herself because she thought if she lost enough weight that he would love her. Meanwhile he’s visiting his dead wife in the cemetery and forcing himself to not touch Miranda because he made a promise to his dead wife 🤦🏻‍♀️

I would have given the book 3 stars because everything could have been solved by simple communication (and it looked as though Miranda's new husband wouldn't be against it!) but then I remembered that the times were different then, so one more star to the right!

Overall I enjoyed the story, it was fairly straightforward and a very easy read with a happily ever after.

I thought it was going to be a bit steamier than it turned out to be given the initial description, but that was okay too, because you don't always need to have those scenes to enjoy the book!

As a whole, a nice relaxing read for a rainy afternoon. Recommended.

Great read!!!

At seventy years old and a shut-in with SLE, I read continuously. I have read over 340 books on my kindle in the past three years! I read voraciously. My kindle keeps count. I read history, biographies, novels, and historical fiction. God bless my mother, who through her example taught me what treasures books can be. To escape your own world and live the lives of others who write so giftedly.

Miranda by Margery Scott was the first book by this author I had read! It was a great book to read and I loved it! Great characters...great storyline...a joy to read!!! Thank you, Margery!

I really liked this book it gave me major little house on the prairie vibes.

This is the first historical romance book I read, in the past, I watched a lot of historical movies/tv-shows and something about it just feels really soft to read and watch.

I felt it was quite rushed we didn't get to see a lot of stuff since it was mostly based on the romance which I didn't mind that much. But I kinda did want a sequel about this family.

There just seems like there's so much more to explore but am I happy to have read this book? Totally, it was a really nice read !
