“I get so scared, until I recall, that most things are not scary at all,” the little boy acknowledges in Jennifer Waddle’s children’s book, I Get Scared When . . .
~ What ~ Part of the A Day in the Life of a Little Kid series, this oversized thirty-page paperback targets children ages two to six years old who enjoy a secular reminder of how to not be scared. After a dedication page, two lines of rhyming are on the left sides of the pages and full-sized, colorful but sophomoric illustrations are on the right. The ending has two coloring pages, tips for parents, and the author’s biography.
In this rhyming tale, a little boy explains that he is scared of loud thunder, big dogs, darkness, fast rides, unfamiliar people, spiders, heights, and more, but once he realizes that most things aren’t frightening, especially with the help of his parents, he is no longer frightened.
~ Why ~ Children today often need help understanding their emotions, including being scared. I liked that this story shows how one can own up to their fears without being mocked or laughed at, but by reflecting on understanding reality, being afraid can be lessened. Adding the two black and white pages to color and the five tips were helpful. I appreciate the parent’s tip that included praying to God when afraid.
~ Why Not ~ Some readers may not like some of the frightening facial expressions. Beginner readers may be frustrated with the two- and three-syllable words. Due to the simplistic artwork, there may be not enough visual stimulation for older children.
~ Wish ~ I wish the coloring pages had clearer lines. The Amazon page mentions the read is for eight to twelve year olds, yet it would be best for two- to six-year-old children.
~ Want ~ If your child is at the stage of learning about emotions and how to deal with them, this one on being scared will ease their fears while helping them cope.
