So much philosophy and political science stuff. This is not the kind of thing I'd expect from a shounen manga, but Ohtaka is pulling it off quite well.

World building was nice!

World: The art is starting to lose me. At first, I found the art and line work simple and refreshing but now it’s really messy and the characters have really weird proportion and eyes are weird in the way they emote. The world building here is solid, it’s a lot of backstory which I love and the ideas that this book throws about the world is interesting. It’s not entirely original but it’s interesting and makes the story more intriguing for me.

Story: The story starts off rather slow with Alibaba with the prince and also the conference, it does meander a bit and is trying to find the tension and the pace. However once the story starts with the history and lore that’s when I’m engaged. There are a lot of answers here that have been up in the air since the start of the series. I felt that the series lost focus after meeting Sinbad and the dungeons and the adventure went out the window with all this crazy insane magic without rules coming into play and the empire and the conflict. We get it here, we get some answers but honestly it’s still a lot of magic has no rules that’s defined here and while some answers are made clear, some new questions are up in the air.

Characters: The characters are alright. It’s a slower arc and I was hoping for more development but it was not really that slow, it was a lot of posturing and some weird logic going on at Balbadd that meandered and was kinda nonsense making Alibaba’s story lost in the story. There is little with the princess but not much also. I’ve always not been a fan of Sinbad and this arc furthers my reason for not liking him as a character, I don’t understand why this character suppose to be appealing.

It was okay, the world building was good, but the other stuff was not.

Onward to the next book!

In this volume, we get the start of the origin story, not of the world our heroes inhabit, but that of the world of Alma Tran. There are some interesting ideas, but they get a bit lost in the telling, and unfortunately, this part of the story just doesn't hold up. At least not so far. I still enjoy this series, but this is a weird turn that takes us down the rabbit hole to a place I'm not sure the story needed to go.

Oh, and who's on the cover? Once again, we get volumes where we don't know the character on the cover until like 3/4 through the volume. Fun fun.

A review for books 1- 26

This Manga starts our humorous. I really enjoyed the characters at the beginning. The farther you read the deeper the plots become. Enjoyable at the beginning, and a must read for the later books. I can NOT wait for books 27 + Characters are real and raw. Everyone has there faults and I feel the author/artist dose a wonderful job of bringing everyones points of view, twisted though they might be, in to clear focus.

(note: I wouldn't recommend this manga for young teens. I fine the sexual innuendos pretty funny as an adult, but not really appropriate for younger audiences. Also the plot gets pretty dark at times. )

I read the English translation on KissManga.com

It's too bad that people seemed to hate the flashback arc - Shinobu-sensei ended up having to rush the last few chapters (which were really good and deserved better pacing) because of low ratings for it. I however, really enjoyed seeing Alma Toran, and have really loved the cast in it, especially Sheba and Ugo. Oh well. I can't deny I am thrilled to be getting back to Aladdin and the others again, though. Still I can't wait to see this animated (if in fact they do plan on doing a third season).

5/5 Stars (%89/100)

A LOT happens in one volume. The summit finally happens and Alibaba needs to decide whether to side with Sindria or Kou Empire. He also realizes that being a king does not mean only having power. He is still young and needs to learn about many things. Meanwhile, Aladdin returns and explains the history of Al-Thoran and King Solomon. This book ends with a major cliffhanger and I'm actually excited to read the next volume.

The art remains gorgeous and a lot of character's true intentions are revealed, but this was such a talking-heads/exposition volume that I wasn't able to enjoy it as much. I like the humor and the action, and both were severely lacking.
That said, we finally get to learn the true origins of Solomon, Hugo, and the rest of the vessels. So it's good for learning things, not so good for getting into the story.

I'm aware that not everyone is fond of past arcs. But, be it novels or manga, I've always enjoyed the parts of the story where you go back in to time to know the tales of a meaningful ancestor or ruler of the eras gone by, and see how it affects the events of today in the main plotline.
Overall the story has kept me hooked on it so far.

P.S. Momo deserves all the love.

A flashback arc has begun and it was really enlightening to the current world and the names that have been involved throughout the series without any real backstory.

I feel I put this after every review if Magi but I'm so Darn curious about what's to come!

Disclaimer: I watched the anime and needed to read the manga as I loved this story. Unfortunately, I binged every volume back to back each moment I was free so its hard to distinguish what happened in each volume.

4 stars, I am loving it.
